Heh, what's your school assignment? Just recite the task, I'm sure we'll come up with something...

 

As far as dimension-jumping and making it would work... Well, there are infinite dimensions, because any tiny deviation in the path of the universe would cause a new timeline/dimension. Say every second, there is a two-way path. After one second, there are two timelines. Two seconds, four. three, eight timelines, etc. Once you get to the billions of years since the creation of the universe that we are at now, even with the simple two-way-per-second path diversion, there must be many googolplexes of universes, and many more created every single second.

 

Now, imagine I flip a coin. At the moment it lands, there are two possibilities; heads or tails. The universe splits. In one universe, it's heads, and in the other, it's tails. Perhaps I flipped to decide whether I grab a certain dragon - in one timeline, I gain a new dragon, and in the other, I don't.

 

Now imagine that someone dimension-jumps at exactly the point where that deviation occured. The chances of them entering that particular world are exceedingly low, but suppose they do. They wouldn't notice anything different at all. So, dimension-jumping could have little to no effect on anything.

 

But suppose there was a small chance that life evolved on Mars at around the same time as on Earth. How different would the world be if we had contact with an alien race practically neighbouring our own? That's yet another different dimension.

 

Imagine one small difference in how the universe could have progressed. How much of a difference would it make? What could happen? Imagine all the possiblilities, and then explode because that's just impossible.

 

 

But even a tiny difference can have an unexpected effect. Say that dragon I grabbed had a cool lineage, and I bred it to something with another cool lineage, and their egg had a completely awesome code. Maybe I sold the egg, and I gained a huge load of money. How different would the world be then? There would be a world shortage of Softmints, people would disappear to my torture dungeon, perhaps I pay someone lots of money for something and they spend a lot as well? And think about it - all that would have happened because of one coin-toss.

 

I guess you now have to think about the consequences of your actions. How much impact could any little thing you do have? You're disturbing the air just by breathing and moving, maybe that's the last straw that causes a devastating tornado?

 

 

I'm rambling now. Anyway, if I didn't already help you enough with your homework, just tell me what you need.

Wow, that was an interesting one =) I have a creative writing class and I needed more of a conflict for my story; I wasn't sure if I wanted man vs. self or man vs. environment. The idea was that this girl could hop dimensions and needed to in order to find her friends again, but it didn't seem to be interesting enough if the only conflict she faced were other random circumstances from a place she visited (i.e. chased by killer fairies in one place, forced to marry in another) so I thought there should be a more underlying problem she could face as well as whatever she dealt with with each new dimension.

 

Going along with what you said, I like that bit where different choices led to a new dimension...maybe she could meet an alternate self out to get her?
