Phones

Recommended Posts

I searched and nothing came up, delete if this is a dupe.

Phones-from brick to cell, they have changed the world. Most people nowadays have phones, usually cell phones. Phones have evolved from plastic bricks to palm-sized flat rectangles with touchscreens.

You can download apps and go on the internet, and often kids receive them at a young age. Things such as payphones are peppered across streets (although not as common as they once were), and things like Skype have been invented to call someone while also looking at each other through video.

This thread is for discussing phones, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I miss the old heavy receivers you could slam with a satisfying thud, hanging up on telemarketers.

I also miss payphones located everywhere.

I have a 7-year-old Tracfone flip phone as my cell phone. It mostly suits my needs - all I need is calling and texting - I've got my ipod for fancy apps. And it's cheap too - $20 every 3 months.

I do, however, wish I could have a phone that connects to the internet anywhere, and another reason I'm tempted to replace it is that if the charger stops working then I'm screwed.

There's two things holding me back: 1) I'm going on vacation in summer 2016, and it might be a good idea just to have an old phone that nobody's interested in stealing while I'm traveling, and 2) While I live in a small city, the area's pretty rural overall. My mom got a Tracfone smartphone, and apparently they need something different on the towers than the old Tracfones do, and so subsequently there's a lot of times she doesn't get coverage. That makes me hesitate too.

I got a land line about a month ago. Forgot that I wasn't yet signed up for the no-call list until the last couple days, when I've started receiving calls from some survey company (I have caller ID, so I haven't picked up, but they have called exactly 17 times in the last week or so.) Hopefully they'll stop, and if not, then I just have to wait it out until I've been on the list 30 days and can report them. I'm actually thinking of picking up and saying something to the effect of, "Hey, your calling me 17 times in the last week reminded me that I haven't added my new number to the no-call list. I'm on it now, so you can stop calling. Thanks and bye."

I have a Blackberry Z10. Hate it. xd.png I guess I just miss my LG Rumor -- you know, that slide phone that everyone had in like 2010. xd.png

I'm with WIND, so free internet as long as you're in town -- which I am. happy.gif That and the ability to play music are pretty much all I like about smartphones.

LG Cell, not too smart. While my computer was down, I could only look at the dragons on my scroll. Navigation was impossible, couldn't find fansites. I don't text, either. I prefer a good old fashion conversation, with all the nuances, real laughter, friends being friends on the phone for hours.

I do have a land line, with a 10 -15 year old digital phone, has answering, caller ID, etc., but my pride and joy is the 36 year old classic RED dial phone, still sounds better than any of the other phones, and I can hang up on telemarketers with whatever force necessary! xd.png

I curretly have an iPhone 5. Only had it for a few months since the battery in my old Samsung Galaxy Xcover got inflated and died horribly. May it rest in peace U_U

The iPhone suits me pretty well. I've had an iPod for over 5 years (Which is longer than any of my cellphones) and I like their simple design and OS. The only bad thing I can really say is how expensive they are, mine is a pre-owned, so I got a big discount, but still pretty expensive if it breaks.

Oh, and I also dislike that I apparently got hated on for having an iPhone by a friend O_o

I have an iPhone 4s.

The battery is starting to wear down though, so it drains very fast. I planned on getting another iPhone but I can't afford a new phone at present, so my current one will have to do. I just don't see the need of buying a new phone when the one I have still works.

I drop things too much, so I have a Rugby 3. I hate the way check out people in retail stores get all snarky with me when they tell me I need to download the app so I don't have to print out coupons, when I show them the phone the eyeroll happens.

When I have to eventually get a smartphone, I hope I don't my plan is cheep and I don't need Internet 24/7, the Caterpiller phones are well made, but not carried by AT&T. Very disappointing.

My phone is a ten year old black and white screened Nokia brick which I only have to charge once or twice a week xd.png It does everything I need it to and I dread the day I have to replace it.

I'm currently using an iPhone 4S which is thirdhand I think. It works well but the only problem is that the battery drains quite quickly.

Nokia 1112:

user posted image

I've had it since 2006. Still get 10 days standby (instead of 14 days when I first got it) but then again I do get several texts a day from the NHS asking me to cover shifts. IT is practically indestructable, I have thrown it at walls, dropped it down the side of buildings, stood on it, sat on it, left it in the bottom of my backpack every day for nine years...and while the case has a few cracks and scratches, not a single functional problem.

Ah, I miss the good old Nokia with its clicky numeric pad. Now, I have a Samsung touch screen phone. Touch screen are easily damaged. Phones these days aren't as sturdy like those old Nokia phones.

I have an ancient PAYG Sagem something or other. The teeny screen is a bit coloured but not very !

I only ever use it for texting. Voice calls if I am stranded or something, but I absolutely cannot see the need to be wired up at all times. A lot of the time it is - shock horror - switched off ! People say "what's the point of having one if it's not on all the time ?" - well, what's the point of being interrupted all the time ? I have a landline which gets plenty of cold calls etc. I like to use my kit when I want to use it, not when the rest of the world thinks I ought to be available to them.

As for cameras etc - I'd rather have a good camera that does what I need of a camera. A phone is for phoning. I am sick of appliances that do everything not very well. I like SPECIALIST kit !

Man, payphone booths were great. Not for actually calling people, of course, but for adding those creepy and suspenseful moments in horror movies. That iconic scene from The Birds wouldn't have been the same without it.

Cellphones tend to be an annoyance in the horror genre nowadays, since you'll always need some sort of exposition on why they won't work when the hapless characters need them to (batteries dead, no cell service, dropped phone in a puddle of morning dew, etc.)

Naturally my phone has finally been put to rest after making the above post *sigh* Now on to a Nokia 130, which feels less sturdy already.

I've got a flippy!

Second phone I've ever had. First was a flippy too, but it was literally falling apart on me after seven or eight years of use so...

I absolutely despise smartphones and the like. I hate touchscreens, I don't see what's wrong with the keypads. Less mistakes. And maybe it's just because I'm visually impaired, but I prefer punching in a phone number to telling a phone what to do. I don't text, both because I don't want to and because my phone doesn't tell me what I'm inputting, but I've heard plenty of stories about how unreliable voice recognition can be, and it's not something I see myself trusting anytime soon. Besides, it's nobody's business what I text, if I decide to do so, so there's another reason I don't want to speak them out loud.

I dislike cell phones in general.

I have a mild hearing problem that gives me issues distinguishing voices from background noise, and cell phones are generally too small to cover my ear completely to help cut background noise. So when I do have to use a cell phone, I've got one hand cupping the phone to my ear, my other hand covering my free ear, and I still spend half the conversation saying, "What? Can you repeat that? I can't hear you."

So, I have a landline at home, with a basic trimline from Radio Shack that I think might be close to 25 years old by now.

I do have a flip Tracfone that I keep in the car (for the express purpose of calling AAA for mechanical issues and 911 for emergencies) but that's about all it's there for. Once in a while I've called to confirm driving directions or whatever, but that's it. No internet on the phone, no texting, nothing like that. And honestly, the only reason I even bothered to get that is that there are hardly any pay phones to be found anymore.

I had a smartphone once, it was terrible for my productivity. I don't call people much and I don't text, so I don't really need any fancy extras on my phone service, and usually I just leave it in my car for however many days it takes for the battery to run out, or shove it in my pocket with the ring muted.

i accidentally flushed one of my cellphones down a toilet recently. i am not a very good phone owner.

I have a cell phone, finally. Just a basic Vodafone thing that I mostly use to listen to music-I am a bit careless with it but it seems to be holding up okay.
