Posted January 9, 2015 (edited) I think the title says it all. Where do you get ideas from? Random things that come to your mind, word play, based on the dragon's code, favourite music/movie/book/TV show, or something on the side? And what names do you pride yourself with the most? Mine is a combo of all in a way - I may use letters of a dragon's code as a base and just add other letters to turn it into a name, sometimes I just think of something completely unusual (and usually it works out as a non-taken name), sometimes it's my favourite song titles and so on. Sometimes I even use elf, fairy and vampire name generators to give me ideas when I run out of mine. What are your sources of inspiration? Posted January 9, 2015 You pretty much covered all of it for me. Many of my dragons are named after some of my favorite characters. A few examples would be: http://dragcave.net/lineage/ZOoys http://dragcave.net/lineage/GKKAe http://dragcave.net/lineage/zbbOJ http://dragcave.net/lineage/WJE68 Others are named after favorite songs: http://dragcave.net/lineage/lT6Ea Sometimes the code is a big helper or is perfect as a name: http://dragcave.net/lineage/BiB0x http://dragcave.net/lineage/GMiLK Other times it inspires a name with word play. Sometimes I also let my niece and nephew help me name them. I had to name my CB female Ice Elsa from Frozen because she asked me to. x3 http://dragcave.net/lineage/1aeNA Quite often I'll name the dragon after their parents. http://dragcave.net/lineage/VD7aV For the rest there really is no method to my madness, just whatever name I come up with that sounds good. Posted January 9, 2015 I like to name my dragons based on their codes because I feel it belongs to them even more. I don't know why I worry about that but I do. But if it's too hard to make a name out of I make it up myself, or just smash the keyboard until something cool can be used. Holidays are the exception and I always try to make them unique if I am imaginative enough. (I still need to finish naming half of my dragons and now I feel bad. :c ) Share this post Link to post
Posted January 9, 2015 I have a naming scheme with my Pygmies. Right now it's a mineral name plus Mini. Also have something like that with my Whiptails. Normal name plus Skytear. But not all of them have it. All my other dragons are just random things I think of. Sometimes, especially with bred dragons from the AP, I name them really ridiculous things hoping the owners of the parents look at it and are like wth? Share this post Link to post
Posted January 10, 2015 I do a mix, I name dragons after characters from books/games/tv shows, people's characters i had/have roleplay with before (annnd three characters that I roleplay before), name them after the parents, name them things that fit the dragon species, name them after songs, and then sometimes they get name after their code. Oh, and some other type of random things here and there. (Like the fact some of my dragons have elf names lol) Share this post Link to post
Posted January 10, 2015 This was a great! I totally am going to use some of these ideas thank you guys Share this post Link to post
Posted January 10, 2015 Usually I use a dragon language table from Dragon magazine to pick names for my dragons. I also use Skyrim's dragon language for some of my more "important" dragons. Occasionally I name some of my non-project Vampire dragons in Latin, but I think most of the time I get them wrong. Share this post Link to post
Posted January 10, 2015 My Dorsals are named after authors/philosophers. My CBs are usually named after songs. My lineage dragons are named after their parents if I can make it work, or otherwise after songs. Share this post Link to post
Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) I don't have one single scheme, but use different ones. It depends on what inspires me when I have to name to first For example, my cb golds and silvers have names of famous people, mostly Italian, from the Middles Ages and the Renaissance, like Lorenzo de Medici or Leonardo da Vinci. My purebred blusangs are named after Italian rivers and all get the SangReal surname My cb gold wyverns have names from nordic mythology, like Gold Odin and Gold Sigfrid For my Graves I used Irish months and days of the week. Posted January 10, 2015 My dragons from a few months ago + tend to be weirdly named and I have no idea what was going through my head as I named them, lots seem to start with the suffix 'Od', as in 'Odarias', 'Oldicia', and 'Odtarrah'. Since then however, I've taken to naming my flowers after genus'/species of plants. For example, my blacks are tend to be variations of different types of iris', while the new Christmas dragons are respectively called 'Viscum rotundifolium' and 'Viscum capense'. There are still some from my first couple of months on DragonCave, c. 2012, that I just look at and I think 'what was I even thinking?', but I've chosen not to rename them because I feel like they somewhat document my thought process'... in a roundabout way. Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) Hmm IDk what to call my first dragon egg any help with that? yes I am new lol Maybe it's best that you wait for the egg to hatch and the dragon genders, so that at least you know if it's a boy or a girl. And if you have no specific ideas even then, you can type any name in these generators: Elf name generator Vampire name generator And similar sites to get unique names. These are useful. Posted January 11, 2015 All of my CBs have random name schemes. I'm currently naming them after dinosaurs, but if I can't think of anything I give them a random name with Pwooflestein at the end. My lineaged dragons are generally named after their parents. Share this post Link to post
Posted January 11, 2015 http://dragcave.net/lineage/VHwbk Unusual name for a silver but I think it suits her. Share this post Link to post
Posted January 11, 2015 Parents if they have them and codes. The intended use for the dragon also plays a part in which name to go with. Right now I am working on a large even-gen project, the CB dragon's who don't have mates yet get simply, temporary names, which make them easy to find. Once they get a mate, their names change. Their off spring will be named in a fashion that will tell me who their parents are and what generation they are. Names come from random places it seems. Nature also inspires me. The bread and information on it is dictates some of the names. Some times I name my dragons funny names if I can't think of anything else. For example, I have a pair of dragons with the names "Faster than the Dragon above" and "Faster than the Dragon below." Share this post Link to post
Posted January 11, 2015 When I first started, all my dragons had names that started with the letter m, and their offspring started with the letter s. I have no idea why I did this to be honest. But that's what I did. Now I mainly name randomly, off codes, off some theme that comes to mind for breeding plans or based off breed types. The only ones that are not random are my nebula lines. Posted January 11, 2015 I have multiple naming methods. Sometimes if the codes comply, I will name a dragon after it's code. With new releases I am sometimes inspired by the colors of the dragons, like Yellow-Crowned. They reminded me of Sweden/Swedish so I gave them Swedish cuisine names. Dragons caught at the AP or gifted to me many times will have the scroll name of the breeder followed by the type of dragon. Sometimes there is a bit of whimsy. Then there are the Dinos. Rather than think of names I gave them names by numbers and color: Green Dino Mite 1. I have made a Spotted Greenwing 6 even generation lineage with the first half named after famous duos and the 2nd half name for opposites. There are plenty more Spotted Greenwings to make a 7th even generation and those are basically numbered waiting to see if I will ultimately give them separate new names. Then sometimes I name the dragons after parents in their lineages. .....I name them using lots of methods Share this post Link to post
Posted November 19, 2015 (edited) Whatever sounds pretty *^u^* I try to come up with good names, but I'm not good at naming, though I LOVE names. I think I'll start using some generators to come up with them or maybe use Elvish... I could go really unusual or pay homage to my favorite characters and I'd love to, but my dragons are my family and I need names that I can actually call them by... Posted November 19, 2015 I tend to go with fictional characters, or name things after parents with awesome names Occasionally I'll do something that sounds like the code. Share this post Link to post
