Stop Breed Specific Legislation

Credits

First and foremost, due tribute needs to be paid to Delphine who created the original Stop BSL Lineage.

Raising awareness of such an important issue is too worthy a cause to let it fade away, so we will continue with the same purpose. As such, a lot of what is in the set up of this thread will be adopted from the original.

Many thanks to the wonderful Rubyshoes for approving this reboot! <3

Background Information

BSL is breed specific legislation and, as a law, has the aim of banning the ownership of certain breeds within the jurisdiction. The breeds on the list are in danger of being restricted or banned completely if legislation passes. What are some of the restrictions for these breeds? No matter how loving or friendly your dog may be, it could be required to wear a muzzle in public and/or a tag to indicate that it is a "dangerous" dog. In some jurisdictions, restricted dogs face mandatory spaying/neutering. This puts entire breeds at risk of extinction if that policy spreads far enough. If the breed is banned completely, the risk of seizure and euthanasia is very real. Too many pet owners have lost a beloved furry family member to the ignorance or misinformation of those behind BSL. One real solution to preventing dog bites? Education. Not only for the pet (because they need to be properly trained as well), but for the pet owner and the entire family. No animal should be condemned for the failings of its human(s).

Why a BSL lineage? To spread the word and encourage people to get informed about the subject. You can find additional information regarding BSL on the ASPCA website, on this Wikipedia page, and on this Pit Bull rescue site.

How the lineage works

All you need to do is grab some CBs of any eligible breed and start your lineage in whatever shape you wish. You can make an even gen, an arrowhead, anything. One of the few requirements is that the names of your BSL dragons need to include the word BSL. The idea is to also raise awareness of which breeds are in danger, so it would be nice to include one of the breeds listed on the pages linked above in your dragon names - this is not, however, a requirement. Members can swap eggs or gift their eggs to others if they so desire. The dragons we are going to work with will be, like the targets of BSL, the misunderstood.

Eligible Breeds

Guardian of Nature

Vampire (As long as it was not originally one of the breeds on this list.)

Black Marrow

Ice

Hellfire Wyvern

Black

Rules

1. No killing, but you may vamp an egg that is from a breed NOT on the eligible breed list.

We don't want to try and kill the egg, however, for we are standing against BSL and against the death of the innocent.

2. No inbreeding.

3. Please do not neglect the egg. We are against neglect in dogs, so we will be against it for these dragons.

4. Please no negative naming.

5. Be respectful to others.

6. Help others if they need it and you are able.

7. No releasing the dragons into the wild.

8. No attempting to make the dragon a zombie.

9. You can include other breeds in the lineage, but only eligible breeds can be counted as a BSL dragon. (i.e. something like this)

I do so like my Vamps, however the death of the egg....

And yeah, attempted to make a vamp over Halloween, didn't succeed. sad.gif

We are against the death of any breed, and a breed is such by the action of breeding. Since the Vampires cannot "breed" but propagate by "killing" another with an infectious bite - I do not see how they can, by nature, be part of the project.

I vote against the Vampire being a part of this project. I do love them, but to have to "kill" an egg which could be a true breeding dragon goes against the purpose of this project.

While I think Vamps would be good candidates for the project as they are, Zoa has a valid point of how they are created. I personally have never experienced a Vamp failure, but I know they happen quite frequently for others.

If we keep them as part of the project, I won't mind as we can always back track the biters as a lineage, but we probably shouldn't Vamp any project breed members.

I like this as a valid compromise.

Vamp'd breed NOT on the BSL list can be valid. Will make ppl think before biting and keep to the spirit of the project.

Very good idea actually. smile.gif

That's a great idea, Dreamfur! I think that compromise should work perfectly. happy.gif

That's something I'm going to leave up to personal discretion, but I think it would be alright since you aren't killing/neglecting/releasing the dragon.

Hello! I would like to be a part of this project!

Also a question: Why isn't Pillow Dragon on the list? It's the furriest dragon we have in DC and I really think it'll help get the point across. :3

p.s. can I use a custom-made banner?

My fave breed is not on the banners but is on the list so  unsure.gif

(It's free for use, to those who also likes akitas. If my banner-making stint is okay with the lineage mods, I'm also okay with taking requests of other breeds on the BSL list)

Welcome aboard! I'll add you to the member list. smile.gif

The eligible breed list is on the short list of things to be updated, so there are a number of suitable breeds not on there yet. That said, I am certainly open to suggestions as to what breeds the members would like to see on that list. Since the BSL list includes Great Pyranees, I think Pillows would be a good addition.

Absolutely, you can use a custom banner! (I'd like to add that one to the New Banners section, if you don't object.)

As long as you don't mind making banners, I would be very happy to add them. happy.gif

As the proud owner of a very loving Husky, I support this idea, but I'd recommend a look at your wording/a better distinction dividing words because everywhere I saw this before now it looked like you guys were trying to stop people from breeding this lineage, not breeding a lineage to spread awareness.

Very confusing.

Even in the original BSL group, we followed this specific list. However, that was posted back in 2008.

I personally tend to follow the Wikipedia list (last updated on 24 September 2014 at 06:51am server time) as it also covers international laws.

Which municipality has it on the books to ban the Irish Wolfhound? I've always found that breed to be wonderfully docile - even lax in guard duties - not at all "vicious". hehe My uncle had a pack of them back in the 1980s when he owned property.

Post Update: 30nov15

-- fixed paw separator

So, I got inspired and made some breed-specific banners based on the list from the OP. I intend to make banners for each breed listed, at least two (one puppy and one adult) with the breed name as that is very important! I'll also post some information for each breed, including little-known facts and (if I can find it) the issues related to the breed that has caused the BSL in the first place.

These banners will in my imgur account into perpetuity. smile.gif

As I make more, I'll just add them to this post.

A note on legislative control lists.

When I mention actual jurisdictions (countries, states and cities) it is only because there are actual laws in place. I am not listing areas that are "considering" or have "voluntary controls".

B - Means the breed is banned in this jurisdiction and if found are subject to euthanasia in most cases.

R - Means there are restriction placed on this breed, anything from forced neutering to leash laws.

Airedale Terrier

Although displaying on the list we follow, this breed does not appear on the Wikipedia source.

According to the Woodcrest Kennel, an Airedale Terrier breeder in New Hampshire, "We have seen the breed included on several lists moving toward legislative restrictions and bans." (source: http://www.woodcrestkennel.com/pet-legislation/)

Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog

Although not specifically listed on the Wikipedia BSL page, this dog is noted on the groups recognized list.

This breed of Bulldog is related to the White English Bulldog, the American Bulldog and the Old Southern Bulldog. It is considered a "rare breed", with its patriarch and matriarch dogs having come from a long line of "old timey" dogs and American Bulldogs. This dog is named for the Alapaha River of Georgia.

There are some specific features of the dog that helps it stand apart from the other bulldog breeds; size and shape of head and bone structure which has been bred true from the originators of the line.

This double-coated breed, similar to the Husky, is well suited to colder climates. Its undercoat has an oily and wooly texture that averages two (2) inches thick! The Malamute tends to be heavy, bred for hard work, power and endurance whereas the Husky has a smaller, lighter frame having been bred for speed.

Only the country of Malaysia has legislation on this breed, listing it as Restricted.

The standard in bulldogs. A stocky animal with a large head, short snout with extra skin, full chest, and very well developed muscles with highly powerful jaws. A working dog, in medieval times the strength of this dog often found it pulling small carts! Used to hunt feral pigs and other vermin, it is a very old breed of dog that once almost went extinct. A private breeding program brought the dog back with stock from Engligh Bulldogs and dogs that had been caught in the wilds of the Southern United States.

American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT)

A medium sized, solidly built dog with short hair. Early ancestors hail from England and Ireland. As with all other "bull dog" and "bull terrier"b breeds, the APBT can be traced genetically to the Molosser - which was a large shepherd dog (not be confused with the Mastif). What makes the APBT special, it is slightly larger than the other breeds.

Sensationalized in the American Press as "a killer", this breed has been used for hundreds of years in cruel and vicious ways. Used for bull baiting, bear baiting and cock fighting in the UK. The breed has also been used for animal hunting, specifically feral pigs and cattle.

As an owner of APBTs, I will say they are smart, gentle, kind and all around awesome dogs!

Places where this breed is subject to legislative control:

  • United States (too many to list here)
  • Australia (R, Banned from importation)
  • Canada (Ontario B)

Shepherds (Alsatian & German)

This breed of dog is so "bad", it makes it to many BSL lists twice! Called either Alsatian Shepherd (breed traces to Alsace, France) or German Shepherd (breed traces to Germany).

During World War II, the English utilized the Shepherd as guard dogs, scouts, police canines and more. Not wanting to use the word "German", the English called the dogs Alsatian Shepherds. The only difference between these "breeds" of Shepherd is the genetic lines to certain localities. Interestingly enough, the Alsatian lines can be traced back to Germany.

Shepherds come in many styles, but the most common are tawny and black coated with very large ears.

@Pandalf: They're so cute! I'd love to add all three of them.
