Demigods and Monsters

Recommended Posts

In this world, all Mythologies are real. The gods walk the Earth and, sometimes, they walk among us. This union between man and god results in Demigods, beings more powerful than mortals but less powerful than gods. These people are commonly regarded as heroes or powerful figures in history and usually claim fame by slaying monsters like hunters slay tigers and lions.

Monsters do not wander alone and they too join with mortals. These creatures are similar to demigods but with a beast for a parent instead of a god. While their parents can easily knock aside demigods that pursue them, their children are much more vulnerable and are usually sheltered away.

This has gone on for thousands of years but with the coming of modern technology, hiding places are running out and the monsters are disappearing. Young demimonsters are forced out into the mortal world, a place they do not know and many fear due to the presence of demigods.

You are either a demigod or a demimonster.

Survive.

In terms of rules, it really just needs to make sense. Here are a few basic ones:

*Powers should match powers of parents

*Demigods/monsters shouldn't be as strong as their parents

*Gods/Monsters specifically said to be very loyal to their spouses/virgins should not have kids.

*Any mythology goes, just don't be insensitive to people's beliefs. Due to the nature of gods, it might be a better idea to avoid monotheistic mythologies.

*Short posts are allowed but try to maintain decent grammar.

((Could you please?))

He was starving. Living as a runaway meant several things, but the biggest one on his mind was that he had no food or shelter. He missed his library and all the books. He missed the warm fireplace he and mother always curled up to. Pulling the coat closer around himself, the teen shivered. He had been wandering for a while now. This place was nothing like the sands of Egypt or the shores of Greece. It was terrifying. Dark. Cold. The forest growth was much too thick for him to traverse safely in his larger forms. So, he remained as a human.

Squinting at a shape in the distance, a rush of excitement flowed through him. The first welcome sight in ages. After what felt like miles of trees, a massive castle was something he gladly took in. Instantly did he bolt, feet scraping against the littered pine needles that coated the soil. A place to stay! Hopefully it had something he could catch to eat. Rats were disgusting creatures that tasted foul, but he was hungry enough to eat one. Anything sounded good now that he was so famished.

As he darted up the stone steps, he stopped as the enormity of the building dawned onto him. What was this place anyway? Some sort of castle? If it was a castle, somebody had to have built it! That meant there was probably somebody in there. Right? That meant food. And possibly warmth. His coat of fur was only so thick in his other forms, since lions lived where the cold was a notion not experienced. Hesitating at the massive doors, Cyrus took a step forward. Then another. Until he was tugging on the ornate door handles. The stupid thing wouldn't budge! He just wanted inside was all!

Crow sat at the base of a large carved angel headstone drumming on the flat granite stone of a newer grave tapping out “By the Rules” by Adam Lambert, softly singing the words under his breath. His amber brown eyes scanned the stones for anything abnormal. Nothing, unless that lazy stray calico meant any harm, then the coast was clear. The cemetery was on the vary edge of the city, far from the tall buildings and thick crowds. He liked this place, people thought him strange, a ‘problem’ child. Adults didn’t get him, and the stronger jocks bullied him so he found sanctuary here, with the dead. They don’t judge him. Although, his father was their judge, so they should know better.

He continued to tap out songs until the owner of the grave, Mary poked her grey white head out of the ground and asked him to stop, it was ruining her sleep. He did so, standing up and slipping the drum sticks in to the pocket of his thick black leather jacket. He stamped his feet, trying to return the lost feeling to them. The dark didn’t bother him, and his mother worked late tonight.

He slipped in to an empty tomb; empty for the last sleeper had been moved to a newer home with his wife. After closing the door and lighting the lamp that he brought in from its iron hook outside, he wedged himself in a small alcove in the wall pulling his knees to his chest, ignoring the new burses from the kids at school. He hoped that someone else could understand him like his mom did.

Night had set and her father still had yet to return. Being very, very young, Charlotte did not know exactly what to do. Whenever he went out, her father always returned by the time the sun set and she awoke from her sleep, usually bringing back food for her to eat before practicing how to use her abilities. It was only a few weeks before he had left that she had actually learned how to take the form of a bat and fly so it was something that was still very hard for her to do. She was nowhere near ready for her to go out on her own, especially not with all of the tales she had heard about humans and demigods that lived out there.

So she did what she had every night. When she woke up, she lit the candles around the castle to shine a little, nonlethal light in the darkness. Not enough to notify humans but enough to light the way. After she lit the candles, she looked around the castle for things to eat. The blood of the animals that roamed about wasn't pleasant but it was the most she could do. There wasn't anything else to eat! Thankfully, the rats occupied the basement in very large numbers and she could usually feed on them suffering only small bites in return. After finding food, she usually just wandered around for the rest of the night, exploring the large castle that was her home. Only recently had she found the library her father went to when he read her stories and sometimes spent her time by the fireplace, reading a book in his large chair.

And that was where she was. The fire was only embers but was plenty warm for a creature that shunned daylight. Charlotte stared down at the large book between her knees, her head tilted to the side. She wasn't really good at reading since her father had mostly read to her so it was slow going getting through everything. As she looked over the pages, her ears suddenly caught wind of a sound. What was that noise? Looking around, she set the book down on the arm of the chair and slowly moved from the library. It was coming from the front door! Immediately, her eyes lit up as she lifted a hefty, gold key from her pocket and unlocked the door, allowing it to open.

Unfortunately for Charlotte, the being behind the door wasn't who she expected. Not this time. Instead, a scrawny boy nearly fell over as he managed to pull the door open. Quickly did he recover from his own clumsiness to find a girl behind the very door he was trying to get open. Cyrus's yellow eyes narrowed, the pupils that rested inside them contracting to cat-like slots. She smelled...wrong. Stone cold and rotten but living at the same time. It made his stomach churn at the smell. The teen took several steps back, a hand clapped over his nose in disgust. He had never smelled anything like that in his life!

What...what are you?! Something about it, about the whole situation, put him on edge. Like something bad was going to happen. His dark surroundings suddenly felt forboding, and a sense of dread made him bristle. It was rather comical, to see his whole head of hair stand on end. It was meant to be a threatening display, but his shaggy locks standing straight up fell far from such notions. What had he gotten himself into now?

Charlotte blinked at the stranger on her doorstep, taking a few long moments to register someone was here who was not her father. During this time, the boy nearly fell over, corrected himself then promptly covered his nose. Finally, she snapped to her senses with a shake of her head, her eyes locking at the stranger on her door. No, nobody was supposed to be here except her father. Ignoring the boy's question for she found it silly, her eyes narrowed as she tilted her head to one side. "What are you doing here?" She asked, taking a step back inside. Oh, she was really bad at this. Was this a human or a monster? Or maybe it was a demigod here to hunt her! Her expression quickly shifted to that of concern as she nearly tripped over a table placed by the door but managed to catch herself and the table before they both fell to the floor. "You shouldn't be here," she said, looking towards the boy at the door.

When he realized that whoever the stranger was wasn't dangerous, his rigid hair slowly lowered. Cyrus shrugged, and took another step towards the door. I got lost. And I'm tired. Can I stay for the night? And do you have anything to eat? Having little experience with other children his age, he already decided himself invited inside. He was going to find something to eat. With Charlotte on the floor, the Sphinx stepped over her fallen figure to instead roam the castle. The halls were tall enough that...With what seemed like a stretch, his body blurred as it changed. When his form settled, Cyrus towered above the girl he had encountered. That's better. So what are you, some kind of undead? You smell undead, but I can hear your heartbeat.

EDIT: Switch, what do you want Valentíne listed under? Demimonster or demigod?))

Now he was inside as well! Hadn't he listed to her deliberately cryptic warning about not being here? Her father had always taught her to speak deliberately mysteriously since that seemed to scare people off but he wasn't listening! Climbing to her feet, she dusted her dark dress off and looked back towards the stranger. In the time it had taken her to get up, he was suddenly much taller and his lower half resembled some kind of beast. Maybe it was a better idea to just sit back down and let him carry on with his business. This was her first encounter with someone other than her father and it was not going so well. But, at least she knew he wasn't human. And probably not a demigod but she wasn't so sure about that.

She hesitated briefly then curled her lips back and hissed at the taller figure, trying to frighten him off with the tiny fangs in her mouth. "There is nothing here for unwelcome guests!" she declared, grabbing both ends of her cape and swirling them around. She quickly vanished in a puff of smoke as a small bat took her place, flapping awkwardly in the air. "Now go away!"

The nighttime air around the pond was frigid and humid, exactly as Valentíne preferred it. He sat on the shore, his feet in the chill water as he combed his hair and sang quietly to himself. A somewhat messily built campfire, one of the few manmade constructions nearby, sat a few feet away from the him with a bream cooking on the skewer above it. This place, far from the frightening city, had been his home only for a few years. He couldn't bring himself to remain in the place he was born after discovering its stash of rotting human skeletons. It took him several days of walking to find his new home, but he was nothing but relieved when he did.

Perhaps he was a little lonely, though. He was certainly used to living alone, but he didn't enjoy it at all. Several times throughout his life he had caught distant glimpses of other people and sometimes even exchanged brief words with them, but nothing came of it. He knew little of the lives of other people beyond overheard whisperings and stories, but he was curious. He enjoyed the company of the animals that lived nearby, except for most of the fish. He had to eat them, after all.

His daily routine was a very simple one, when he thought about it. Swimming, singing, sleeping, hunting fish when he needed to, and a fair amount of compulsive hair-brushing. It was somewhat repetitive, but he felt security in that.

In response to the girl's weak attempt at a threatening gesture, Cyrus frowned. A low growl rumbled in his chest and he snapped his wings open. He, being raised by. One of the most intelligent yet brutal monsters in Greek Mythology, was painfully blunt and had no concern over cryptic sayings. color=orange]I'll find that out for myself.[/color] he hissed in response. For emphasis, he gave both wings a flap or two. Knowing that he could sway away a bat with ease, the Demimonster turned and began to walk down the halls. Why's it so dark in here? Don't you have torches? And is it always cold here? A fire is what this place needs. Do you have torches?

---

Morrigan, being a wanderer herself, encouraged her daughter to explore. With a longsword at her hip and her mother's gifts at her side, Raven was relatively safe in terms of a Demigod. Roaming was safer for her, anyways. People died of she stayed in one place for too long. She once sat in a village for a day to watch all its inhabitants kill each other. But, being a mistress of death, gore didn't bother her in the slightest. She was born desensitized to it.

The warm glow of a fire caught her attention in the distance. Instantly was she drawn to it, creeping around the trees until it was in view. Someone was there. Maybe...maybe she could join? Do...Do you mind if I join you?
