Adult dragons can "guard" eggs and hatchies

Recommended Posts

TJ, we need to know which would be easier for you, the active method or passive. We're happy with either so whichever you like more/think would be easier is what we want.

***Edit, new update: I just thought of something else. There could be a feature, similar to "accepting aid" or "show account" labelled "allowed spots" that would take the user to a page where they could enter websites that they are going to post their eggs on. If their eggs are posted somewhere else, THAT'S when the guarding takes effect.***

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hypothetical Situation to make what I am suggesting clearer: you just spent several weeks hunting for a rare egg (gold, silver, paper, dino, new egg, whatever). You happily hide the egg, or don't hide it because you have never had a rare egg before and want to make sure it gets enough views. Maybe you post it on an incubator, or maybe you don't. Tired from a long day of egg hunting, you go to sleep, content that your egg will be there in the morning.

While you are happily celebrating over your success, someone else is very angry. They clicked the egg, and missed it, so now they're furious. They have the egg's code, because they clicked the link and didn't get it. Angrily, this person makes a link to the egg, and posts it on several EXTREMELY high traffic sites, that get several thousand views an HOUR.

When you wake up in the morning, you go to check your egg. To your distress, you find nothing but a broken shell, with THOUSANDS of views on it. An alternative situation, you notice that your hidden rare is reaching the 3.5 day mark. You unhide it so it can get some views to grow. The moment you unhide it, it gains several thousand views and dies as you sit there, confused.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

When my gold egg died, the site used to kill it was blocked, but I know there are more sites like it out there. The gold egg was revived, and I'm happy, but I'd rather not see this happen to anyone again. This is a thought out proposal to attempt to prevent deaths from malicious views.

The other "dragon adult actions thread" is for the search function, this isnt search.

I was talking to a friend about my dead gold, and he said "can't your adult dragons eat people if too many people start visiting too quickly?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I was thinking.... maybe once you have ten adults, some too rapid repeat views would get negated, the percentage of negated views would go up as you get more adult dragons? if too many people view too fast theyd get an option "you try to view the egg/hatchling, but an adult sees you and bites you"

NOTE: Newly laid eggs and hatchies are more easily killed than older, so the rate that would be guarded against gets higher and higher as the egg or hatchling ages.

NOTE: Ten dragons means there's a VERY low chance that killing views will be guarded against. More than ten would be needed for full protection.

--------------------------------------------------------

In other words:

The way I view it is more of a safeguard.  The dragon's guarding action only comes into play if the views, etc are rising so quickly that the baby will die.

Hence it's kind of a more advanced fog.

However, it would only work for those who already have some adults, thus indicating that they know how to sucessfully raise a dragon.  Hence it would be a safeguard against malicious kills, rather than inexperienced mistakes.

Lyz.

Ok Lets make this clear. These are a few questions and suggestions that keep coming up.

1. No one is suggesting that any egg, at any time that it is unfogged, would be completely safe from being over clicked/viewed.

2. The vast majority of the people discussing this are not in favor of only having one type of dragon able to protect eggs.

3. The vast majority of the people discussing this are not in favor of only allowing bred eggs to be protected, in any shape form or fashion.

4. There are two main ways that have been discussed:

mad.gif  mad.gif  Active protection, with a time limit, action menu link, kicks in when the egg is in danger *and* protected by a dragon as is outlined elsewhere.

ninja.gifninja.gif Passive protection, hidden, simply coded into the site, automatic, kicks in only when egg is in danger, no new actions, as is also outlined elsewhere.

5.Neither method would inherently provide a higher level of protection than the other, beyond the difference between active and passive.

6. The "protection" discussed does not prevent all views, and only kicks in when the egg is in danger, which would be determined by TJ and changes with how old the egg/hatchling is.

7. Neither method would prevent the saving of ICU/Emergency eggs.

8. Many people are coming up with suggested descriptions of the result of clicking to view an egg that is protected. Have fun. I think that this is only appropriate with the Active method.

I think how it would work for just straight up views to the image is kind of like a popup blocker (with either version). The View still happens, just like the popup, it just never counts. The cool description wouldn't show up-that's for ones that actually are being clicked on-but the guarding dragon would have acted like a firewall and bounced the view before it ever actually counts, like a popup blocker stoping them from showing up on your screen.

At least, this is how I *think* it would work.

-------------------------------------------------

I'm POSTING the idea, but it was originally thought of by Dellen, Medivh server on World of Warcraft, Alli side. If you want to check with him....

LadyLyzar's ideas: Each dragon species can have a different "guarding" action

----------------------------------------------

wording suggestions:

LadyLyzar:

Red: You attempt to touch the egg/hatchling, but it is protected by a ring of flames.

Gray: Thunder rumbles loudly as you approach this egg/hatchling. You decide to leave it alone.

Black: As you approach the egg/hatchling, you see glowing green eyes and hear deep growling, and quickly back off.

Mint: Suddenly a Mint dragon grabs the egg and hides it from you!

littleangelamy22

Paper: When you attempt to touch this egg, it becomes surronded in a huge maze of paper that is impossible to break or tear.

Spilt: When you attempt to touch this egg, one head lunges down and grabs it while another roars fiercly in your direction.

sabbita:

Magi: When you try to approach this egg/hatchling, it blurs, as if surrounded by a magical illusion. You decide it's best to leave it alone.

Kila:

Stone: As you approach the egg, you notice a large stone figure looming behind it. Your eyes may be playing tricks on you, but you swear you saw it move. You decide it's best to turn back...

Blue: When you approach the egg/hatchling, you catch a glimpse of something staring at you from beneeth the lake's surface. you decide to not risk it and turn back.

Silver: As you attempt to view the egg/hatchling, a blinding light takes you by surprise and temporarily blinds you.

Guardian: A large shield comes down in front of the egg/hatchling as you attempt to touch it, and a large Guardian is now standing over the egg. Deciding not to test your luck, you quickly leave.

Vine: A large tangle of protective vines surround the egg as you try to touch it.

Skywing: As you approach the egg/hatchling a large shadow lurks overhead. As you turn to look up a sudden breeze whips up, and when you turn to view the egg/hatchling, you discover that it's gone!

Gold: A glittering viel of golden scales surround the egg/hatchling as you try to touch it. A deep growl sounds from behind the viel, and you leave before finding out what was on the other side.

Green/Earth: As you approach the egg/hatchling a small tremor begins. The egg/hatching and the other dragons seem unphased by the tremor. coming to the conclusion that you aren't wanted there, you quickly turn and leave.

Or perhaps....

As you attempt to view the egg/hatchling a large boulder lands inches from you. Taking this as a sign that you aren't welcome, you turn and leave before another boulder flies your way.

cybunny:

Chicken: You attempt to approach the egg, but you can't seem to find any dragon eggs.

Dino: You attempt to approach the egg, but it is surrounded in spikes. Perhaps its best to leave it alone.

White: You approach the egg, but once you leave, your view has been erased from the egg entirely, healing the wound it was given by your view.

Season/summer: You attempt to approach the egg, but it seems extremely hot... you decide to leave it alone to cool off.

Earth: You attempt to approach the egg, but you can tell before you step that quicksand surrounds it. You can tell that somebody doesn't want it to be seen, so you leave it alone.

Rock: You attempt to approach the egg, but jagged rocks get in your way. You decide to be safe and stay away.

Grey: You attempt to approach the egg, but thick, menacing storm clouds shield it. They seem somewhat ominous, so you decide it's best to leave it alone.

Water: You attempt to approach the egg, but it is submerged in a pool of deep, murky water. Rather than swim down to see it, you decide to leave it alone.

Magi: You attempt to approach the egg, but a magical charge persuades you to go back. You did not catch a glimpse of the egg.

Two-headed: You attempt to approach the egg, but it's being protected by a sleeping two-headed dragon... you shudder at the thought of what it would do to you if it caught you trying to touch the egg. It's probably best to leave it alone.

Purple/Pink: You attempt to approach the egg, but it is protected by a feminine aura. You decide to not bother trying to see through it and leave it alone.

White: You approach the egg, but a white dragon is visible in the background. The egg glows white for a moment and it is as if you have never viewed it at all. You assume the dragon did this for a reason, so you leave it alone.

Guardian: You attempt to approach the egg, but a gray shield is in front of it. When you go to the side of it, it still lingers in front of you. You decide to leave it alone.

Black: You attempt to approach the egg, but there is something ominous about that green glow, so you decide it's best to turn back and leave it alone.

Paper: You attempt to approach the egg, but all you see is a bit of paper. You decide that it's not here and turn back.

MyrddinDerwydd

Vine: You try to peek through the large, prickly mass of greenery surrounding the egg, but the thorns among the vines convince you to turn back.

curk:

Chicken: You go to touch the egg, but a chicken seems to come out of nowhere and starts pecking and cawing loudly out you while flapping its wings. You decide to leave before it comes any closer.

Dino: As you walk over to touch the egg, a large dinosaur with boots starts stomping and growling under its breath. You decide to leave before it attacks you.

Split: As you go to touch the egg, one head of a two headed dragon snaps at your hand angrily, while the other head seems to not know anything about what had just happened. You decide to leave before the other head notices.

KageSora

Chicken (this one's based off Zelda though): "You reach for the egg, but a chicken runs out from a nearby cave and begins to make a horrible racket. In moments you find yourself surrounded by angry chickens, and decided to retreat. You flee for your life as the chickens give chase, stopping only once you have dived into a nearby lake."

kyladragon

Vine: You approach the egg, only to find yourself entangled in vines. You think it is best that you leave.

Paper: You reach out to touch the egg, but a sudden sharp pain in your arm stops you. You have a paper cut!

Mikaul (this one is EXTREMELY humorous)

Summer Dragon: "As you are reaching towards the egg, you are distracted by someone in a tight bathing suit and choose to attempt to click them instead."

Miroku-Kun

Skywing: You walk up to egg, but a strong force of wind knocks it out of your view and you decide to leave it alone as the wind is too strong for you.

Dianacat777

Vampire: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but as you get closer, a pair of luminous scarlet eyes blinks in the gloom, and you feel as cold as ice as something growls. Best to back away.

Autumn: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you can't find it in the fallen leaves that cover the ground.

Neglected: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but as you near it, you start to feel very sick and disoriented. Best to back off.

Earth: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a jagged rift suddenly opens up in the ground, preventing you from getting any closer.

Magi: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a sudden wave of disembodied force pushes you back, leaving you feeling dizzy and farther from the egg/hatchling than you started.

Christmas: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but then you hear something jingling far overhead, and you get sidetracked. (Okay, this one fails. )

Spring: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you can't find it in the pink blossoms that cover the ground.

Summer: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you can't find it in the tall grass that covers the ground.

Winter: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you can't find it in the fresh snow that covers the ground.

Grey: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a bolt of lightning crashes to the ground in front of you, and a furious roar echoes in the distance. Better run for it!

Red: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a blazing bolt of fire barely misses your face, accompanied by a furious roar. You'd better run for your life!

Water: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but something dark shifts in the pool of water next to it, making you feel uneasy. You decide to leave.

Skywing: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but an ominous shadow passes over you as something swoops low overhead, and you can hear growling. It would be best to do something else.

Guardian: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a teal dragon steps forth and places its shieldlike tail in front of it, protecting it from you. Judging from its stern glare, it wants you to leave.

Vine: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but the thorned vines next to it rustle, and then shoot upwards out of the ground, lashing furiously at you. Run away!

Silver: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a flash of blinding silvery light temporarily blinds you, and when you recover, the the egg/hatchling has been whisked away.

Gold: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a flash of blinding golden light temporarily blinds you, and when you recover, the the egg/hatchling has been whisked away.

Black: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but something growls, and you see green eyes flash - a powerful black dragon is standing guard over this egg. You decide not to take any chances.

Mint: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but something small and green darts out of a nearby bush and whisks it away.

Dino: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you hear loud, heavy footsteps echoing in the distance, getting closer. You turn and leave before whatever is making those footsteps finds you.

Chicken: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but all you can find is a chicken sitting on something.

Pink/Purple: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a motherly-looking dragon is curled around it, glaring balefully at you. It might be best to go away.

Zombie: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you are overcome by the stench of decay and rot, and something horrible shifts in the gloom, staring balefully at you with scarlet eyes. You run for your life!

Split: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a dragon head ducks down in front of it, snarling. Startled, you jump to the side, and another head comes down, blocking your path to the egg again, its teeth bared. You turn and flee the enraged dragon.

Zovesta

Vine: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a vine snaps at your hand, and more vines pop out of the darkness. You decide to run for it.

Split: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but four red eyes glare at you. One head snaps at your hand, while the other head barricades itself in front of the egg/hatchling.

Guardian: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a large tail shield is suddenly placed in front of it. The dragon growls protectively. You better run!

Gold: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but you are blinded by the sun rising on a gold dragon. Disoriented, you decide to leave.

Undead: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a foul stench rushes you. You decide to leave.

Silver: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a very shiny tail snaps at you. You better run!

Skywing: You try to near the egg/hatchling, but a flash of white and blue flies around you in a circle quickly. You decide to leave as it makes the circle smaller and smaller.

Sounds neat. ^^ But only certain types should be able to gaurd. ie. No mints, whites, but gaurdians and blacks would be ideal.

whites can guard in a way by healing the baby of views.

I've sort of accepted the fact that TJ doesn't want to revive my gold, even though I'm unhappy with it, and my goal now is to keep anyone from EVER posting an egg on meebo to kill it again.

sounds extremely cool biggrin.gif, you could do that.

when a friend whent to sleep her egg died (cause she din't hide it)

from having to many views.

if someone else was watching to protect it it would be perfect!

I like the idea :~) it would make them game a bit more interactive and real for those of us who think the dragons are real anyway.

It is a good idea, but then there would be no chance that your eggs/ hatchlings would ever die, so you wouldnt need to care for them, therefore what would be the point of dragon cave? If you get me.

Maybe it could be something that only guardian dragons can do...

This would be a great idea... escpet for the fact that they wouldn't probably ever die. How about...

-Only adult guardians can guard

-You can assign and unassign a dragon to one egg

-White adult dragons have an option once a week or so to heal an egg/hatchling of its sickness

Good Idea curk, it would be good to actually be able to give adult dragons something to do, that actually relates to their description.

Only problem I see is what if said egg had less than a day left and you were getting them a bunch of views to try and make them hatch...

Unless it is an option you can turn on and off.

Interesting idea, but I don't think limiting it just to Guardians is a good idea. Then you'd have to have a scroll full of them if you wanted to protect multiple babies.

What if you had different "guarding" descriptions for each species of dragon?

Something like:

Red: You attempt to touch the egg/hatchling, but it is protected by a ring of flames.

Gray: Thunder rumbles loudly as you approach this egg/hatchling. You decide to leave it alone.

Black: As you approach the egg/hatchling, you see glowing green eyes and hear deep growling, and quickly back off.

Mint: Suddenly a Mint dragon grabs the egg and hides it from you!

And so on.

my original idea was to have it automatic, if the views start increasing at a deadly rate. Obviously, a deadly rate is much, much higher for a hatchie or egg with one day left, as compared to a newly laid egg. And I'm not talking about "ten adults means your eggs can't die from view poisoning" I'm talking about "ten and above dragons, the chance of a deadly rapid view being registered on your eggs and hatchies goes down SLIGHTLY with each new adult dragon you get". so obviously, people would still have to work to raise their dragons, but with enough work and patience their eggs would be protected from high traffic sites. This doesn't mean they'd be able to safely post their eggs there to get views, because the dragons would block all incoming views, but they could at least have the honor of being able to display the pictures there proudly.

None of my eggs/hatchlings have ever gotten sick before, but this does sound like a good idea, especially should I manage to snag a rare in the future.

I do agree, it should have a little to do with species, though. Like guardians, blacks, and stones maybe are more aggressive and do better jobs than mints and, say, pinks or other, seemingly more docile varieties.

xd.png I like this idea

You approach the egg but hear growling, you leave quickly.

But I suppose that's what the fogging method is for is to protect your eggie so idk.

Sounds neat though

fogging doesn't help when someone haws posted it on a high traffic site and you're trying to hatch it. this would be a good solution to that

What would the cut off rate be?

I know someone who posted their egg in a place where it, inadvertently, began getting too many views. It became sick quite quickly. Once she realized what was happening she fogged the egg and now it's fine.

Personally, even though the egg was getting views at too fast a rate and would have died soon, I don't think it should have been protected because placement of eggs and monitoring them is part of the game.

Yes, there have been cases of purposeful egg killing (although they seem rare given the amount of users), but I think that most soft shell deaths are simply owner error. So is there a way to work this that still allows most soft shell deaths to happen but prevent the intentional killings?

I was thinking that an owner who has enough dragons to be immune to deaths from overabundance of views would pretty clearly know how to tend their dragons well....

This is a pretty bomb idea. I hate people who spam eggs on Meebo. It just kills them and it's awful D: sorry to all those who've had it happen. It's not a cool thing to do to someone else...

Running with Lyz's idea...

Blue: When you approach the egg/hatchling, you catch a glimpse of something staring at you from beneeth the lake's surface. you decide to not risk it and turn back.

Eh....not that great, but it was worth a shot, really XD

Which is probably true. But, like I said, the mistaken placement of my friend's dragon was just a silly mistake, but it happened and she almost lost the dragon because of it. I'm actually surprised how many people I know who have a lot of dragons and still deal with soft shell. I actually hear, "I forgot about my dragons over the weekend" and the like more than I'd expect.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of dragons, so this idea would help me, but I actually like the thought that if I madk a mistake or forget about my dragons for a few days, that they could die. I gives me more of a reason to be on top of things.

Which is, of course, just my opinion. And I do see where you're coming from because of the recent incident, but I'd still be willing to be that the vast majority of egg death among players with a large number of dragons comes because of the owner's actions as opposed to malicious intervention.

I really like this idea, I loved to see it continued to be fleshed out. wink.gif

Although I'm not sure how much I like the idea of it being automatic... I'd rather it be turned on/off like the fog button. That way you can "guard" your eggs at night so they can't be victims of meebo or whatnot. But as opposed to the fog they can still receive clicks and views in moderation.

Someone did do a malicious kill on one of mine... that was all part of the fiasco with Terriah's dragons being killed.

It happened overnight, so I was sleeping, and wasn't there to fog it. It was dead in the morning due to a flood of views (like 8000 plus). Uniques also. Believe me, the place I post my dragons does not get that kind of traffic.

This feature would prevent these kinds of egg deaths, but without completely fogging the egg, so that it can still get views/clicks normally. If the rate of growth will kill the baby, not just give soft shell, the adult dragon stops all incoming views and clicks. Maybe until the threat ends, or until the baby has enough to mature, whichever comes first.

Now, I don't know exactly what would constitute a life-threatening growth rate. That would probably be for TJ to implement.

Go ahead and post my ideas if you'd like, Sabbita.
