Teethy struggled against the wet, desperately needing the organic. Teethy broke through the surface only to be sucked back down. This infuriated the slime as he fought harder and harder against the current, eventually breaking through the surface. Teethy was tired and swam towards this organic to investigate, then try absorbing it to fulfill his hunger.

A particularly powerful jump and some flaps brought Zeditha into the air. Deciding to stop dancing for now, she manoeuvred over to the pleap. Yay, a pleap! She dropped herself onto a random part of it - something was covered in soft-scales like her wings. Some of them were shimmery, and it was really pretty - she wanted that! Digging her beak in, she enthusiastically ate.

((Zia want pigeon neck shimmeriness! biggrin.gif

Edited out pigeon specificness.))

Aster decided the colored-tops were nicer to look at than they were to eat, and moved over closer to where Small was, eating one of the pieces at the edge of the pile. When had Small turned blue? Oh, no, that was just because everything was blue now. Well, blue was a nice color, and it wasn't making anything hurt, so Aster supposed it wasn't that big a deal. Aster could hear the huge odd-winged creature in the distance as it flew away, but the slime had gotten accustomed enough to its passovers by now that it didn't take a whole lot of note of it. Big was now perched on the pile in the distance as well. Aster could only assume that it was eating. Aster intended to do that as well. It would eat the entire pile, except for what the other two slimes ate.

Aster found a likely-looking piece close by to Small, but not too close, making sure that it was organic before it started eating it. It didn't want to disturb Small and perhaps force an aggressive reaction from the other slime. They might be friends now, but Aster knew it still wouldn't like its food being taken from it. As Aster opened its mouth to tear into the organic piece, it encountered resistance from the blue stringlike inorganic that had gotten wrapped around its muzzle, preventing the slime from opening its mouth all the way. After opening and closing its mouth a few times and trying to move around its jaws, Aster moved one of its feet to scratch at its mouth and managed to rip through the blue inorganic, allowing the slime to open its mouth again. Feeling extremely relieved, Aster eagerly began to devour its selected piece of organic.

The slime was happily full of slippery, squelchy organic. Yet there always seemed to be room for more food... At the surface where the wet breached the drier environment was a different kind of organic, so the slime experimentally shifted a little bit farther into the wet to caress its goop onto the different organic, intending to absorb it also. Exploring this variety was exciting.

Atrocitas was not working to satisfy needs, only its biological imperative. Pushing through the stuff, it tried to go somewhere to perhaps find something to absorb. It was absorbing everything as it went, but it did not seem to affect it much.

Avisk noticed Unsure biting down into the organic nearby and glanced an eye to Kind. Kind was busy too. Unsure had pawed off the blue thing around its face, which was good Avisk supposed, and continued to eat the organic. Avisk ripped out one of the hard parts of this organic it was eating and swallowed that, looking around for a bit more of something else to eat.

It had food now, and noticed it was starting to grow a little bit of the similar appendages Kind had. Was that a good thing? Could Avisk even go into the Up like Kind or Unsure with these? The blob didn't seem really substantial for going into the Up. Maybe they wouldn't work as well as Kind's or Unsure's. The only way to find out was to eventually try them out. Once they finished growing of course.

So Avisk, while those slowly sprouted, was busying itself crawling and jumping around the pile it was on. It found a few more interesting organic things and decided to drag those into it's own little pile where it could eat them without disturbing Kind or Unsure. It even ripped off a enough of a piece for Unsure and rolled that down near it. A kind of "thank you" it supposed for showing them the pile. It was the least Avisk could do. Unsure was rather nice after all. And for some reason the odd urge to have the entire pile didn't necessarily apply to this pile. It was like Avisk knew this was going to be shared and not a question of if Avisk absolutely needed the pile. Unlike the other one it had set on fire after the bad mushroom hallucinations.

Those memories popped back up. What about the hallucinations? Could Avisk maybe use those again to create more less scary hallucinations? Could it share those experiences with others? That would be quite an experience for Kind and Unsure. Probably a terrible idea. But maybe helpful? Perhaps. Possibly. For now Avisk started to eat a few other of the things from the small pile it created on top of this much larger pile. Something inside Avisk wondered if Angry had resided here at one point. There certainly was enough stuff. Would another being like Angry show up again eventually? What would they do?

OOC @ Zeditha: Edit required for update, I messaged you on Skype about it.

---------------------------------------------------

@Avisk: While the slime was creating a personal pile of things for itself, it started to hear a sound. It wasn't the up-loud, it wasn't anything else the slime had ever heard... except from... itself!? It wasn't the slime doing it, though, it couldn't! The slime thought its own shake-sound had been loud before, but even doing its best? That was totally worthless and the slime almost felt humor at its own ability now that it experienced this. How the other slimes were able to hear it to begin with was unknowable. This new sound, it was almost the same, but so so much louder!! It couldn't tell where it was coming from, but the slime did see... something... start to... There was some big thing on the bottom part of the opposite side of the flat black starting to rise!

@Atrocitas: (unlocked: black lipstick, fake blood gland, daddy longlegs) The slime had absorbed various and random things, and encountered some aggravatingly difficult things because of it. But now it had found something different... something big and cold and hard and wet all at the same time. Organic. It was big enough that the slime had to slurp all over it for awhile in order to get a good image of its true size. It was at least four times the size of the slime!

@Tch'ah: (unlocked: Just look at your character unlocks on the Big File. The Dragcave censor won't let me say its name) It was a strange organic, floating on top of the wet. The slime couldn't do that. Whatever the thing was, it had small soft puffy parts attached to a... same thickness, but much harder, long part. It tasted... well, it was different. Dissolving it was taking awhile, but it was working. Was this the other trace of organic? No. The trace was on top of the wet too, but there was so little of it...

@Aster: Swirls of green started to appear within, or over, or instead of, the blue coloring. The light blue stringlike inorganic looked to the slime like it had something stuck on it? The slime's limb looked like it was all over it, too. Whatever this stuff was, it was... no! It wasn't ON the slime. It WAS the slime. Something had made it start changing again, but whatever it was was two different colors and was spreading through the slime from the front of its face, where the organic thing that hit it in the face had struck. The organic thing the slime found was hard, and furry, but even its fur was hard. Everything was. Except... was the slime starting to get weaker? As the slime was distracted with watching itself change against its will again, it was able to hear a sound similar to what the small slime had done repeatedly, but it was so much louder that the small slime's own sound seemed pointless in comparison.

@Teethy: (unlocked: kelp gas bladder) It tasted good! Maybe it was just the slime's exhaustion that made it taste better than it should have, though. But it was able to get to it! It was totally hollow, but big and round. The organic resisted the slime smothering it, but dissolving the parts it was touching worked fine. The slime's hunger was easily able to be filled, since the thing was just so big! There was a lot more of it left, and the slime was easily able to locate it.

@Zeditha: Ack! This wasn't organic at all. And it had hard pokey parts hidden inside the parts that were soft. That looked soft, anyway. They were bendy, but the annoying thing poked! How could something inorganic look so organic? There had to be a reason. It... was a trap? The slime realized quickly that it was right, and it heard a sound coming from... the other... side... of the... pleap... down. Down where the big hole-like area was. The slime couldn't see anything down there, because it was on the wrong side of the flat black, but there was definitely something there, and it was big! The slime instinctually feared it (many of the animals in your unlock list are terrified of the sound).

Scared, Zeditha used the best action she knew. She flew off, dragging the pretty inorganic with her, and hovered some way above. At the same time, she answered the noise with a call of her own. Several presented themselves at once; a high-pitched whine or yelp, a hissing sound... she chose instead a loud screech. (peregrine falcon noise.) However, it was drowned out completely by this other noise. She couldn't even hear it herself!

Once in the air, screeching at something she couldn't quite see, she decided that this was silly. She stopped the noise, despite different instincts clamouring for her to run, attack, or intimidate, and flew closer. She wanted to know what this thing was, but she definitely did not want to be too close. As she went closer to the noise, the run instincts became stronger, and suppressing them became difficult. She quickly reached a point where she couldn't keep going any further. She did manage to stay, hovering nervously above the pleap. What was it? Was it dangerous? She was fully geared up to flee or attack at a moment's notice.

...Maybe if it moved more into the wetness, the slime would discover more of the trace of organic it had detected? Submerging itself, though, it discovered that it could not move up when the ground was slanting down down down. Uneasily, the slime wondered if it should move away from where wet meets dry, where it knew there was food. Perhaps there was a compromise? It wanted to travel without being limited to so few directions, to reach the food that niggled at its curiosity.

Then it had plenty of time to think, because it shouldn't move right now when it was changing all of a sudden. Its body was no longer just slime, but also was starting to form two, large, strong appendages that could kick.

No no no no NO NO! As Aster realized that it was starting to get weaker, it also realized what was likely happening to it and felt a slight surge of energy from the anger it felt that this would happen now. The slime didn't want to lay on the ground motionless for who knew how long with this feast laid out before it, unable to taste any of it, while the other two slimes ate their fill. Small had even gathered most of the strewn-about objects nearby into a small pile for itself already! Who knew what the other two slimes might have done by the time Aster could move again! The slime furiously tore into the hard-but-furry organic that it had claimed for itself with its remaining strength. Aster would eat as much as it could while it was able. It wouldn't even let the extremely loud, extremely intimidating noise distract it from that now. Right now, eating was more important.

OOC: Zeditha, I noticed that you've been describing your character as "hovering" several times now . . . sorry, but you can't really do that, unless you mean it figuratively, in which case you should really specify that's what you mean . . . there are only a few animals that can hover in midair and peregrine falcons aren't one of them. Sorry.

((Avisk had shared a portion of the pile to Unsure as well btw Viirin. It rolled down to Aster... dunno if anybody caught that.))

Avisk didn't really know what to do. Kind was flying around back and forth, agitated and almost fearful. Unsure seemed mad. Upset? Maybe both? Yet, for some strange reason Avisk was not affected by this? What was going on?

To combat the shaking rattle noises, the slime shook itself harder and louder than it had ever dared. The jingle-shake noises of the hard and longer needles against the scales and exoskeleton made a slightly pleasant sound. But not near loud enough to drown out the other loud sound. And why was there a rise going on? Why was the hurtful flat black thing starting to rise?

The slime stood itself up, having previously started to dig into the multiple organics it had collected. Unsure hadn't even noticed the slime's gift. But now, now they had bigger things to worry about. It took a stance, forward facing. Menacing could be a word. Right? Maybe not. Intimidating? That was what the slime was going for. Intimidation. Maybe the large creature it had eaten previous was used to intimidating things. Evenstill, the slime took that stance and raised the needles.

One last check. Good. Nothing could catch on fire. With the most violent shake Avisk could manage, creating the loudest conglomerate of rattling noise it could, the slime set itself ablaze and stayed still so not to set the pile on fire. It let out a roar, but also a screech similar to Zeditha's own noise. Tiny face-flames danced on Avisk from the mushroom ability in an attempt to challenge whatever was coming toward them. A probably futile attempt to protect Kind and Unsure. Avisk didn't even know what it was doing. The instinct to hoard everything kicked back in, except this time it was at its strongest and now included Kind and Unsure in its own hoard.

This might end badly. But it was all Avisk could manage from atop the pile at the moment until the sound showed itself.

((Roar was from Tiger. So was Intimidation. And I assumed since i have wings from the Falcon I'd also have the screech? If not, I can make screech sounds from other things.... throw in the snake. Annnywaaays.....

Protective Avisk to the rescuuuuueeee!!!! *falls off pedestal*))

OOC: I did see that, but I thought it was a very small portion of the overall pile . . . and anyway in the overall scheme of things Aster wouldn't be too upset about letting Avisk have the small pile since it could just go eat from the giant one . . . she's thinking more in terms of 'if Avisk has already claimed that much, what will he and Zeditha get for themselves by the time I can move again, at which point I will still have very little.'

The slime crawled back and forth over the big thing to try and gauge it, and was rather ambitious enough to try and start at one end. Even if it could absorb just a little, that would be enough for it. It oozed its way through quite a good size of the thing before pausing at the top.

Probably, but Aster is still thinking about what happened with the first pile, before all that happened.

Teethy continued to absorb it, fighting the organic's struggles. Teethy slowly absorbed the rest and tried to sink deeper. Teethy felt something big swimming near him. It sounded dangerous, and he didn't think it was passive like the rest of the organic. It could absorb him, just like he did to others. But the thing just swam right by, not even bothering to try to absorb him. He decided to stop worrying and try to get deeper.

OOC @ SoulKing: I don't remember you evolving ears, so you didn't hear anything. Please edit.

@Avialae: DRA71T. I've evolved it significantly since Dragonhatchling last played him smile.gif It's her first slime from the original thread in 2006.

---------------------------------------

@Aster: (unlocked: coconut eyespots) The slime had severe difficulty attempting to eat the hard organic, but it was able to at least peel some of the hard fur off of it, but it quickly felt every part of itself become thick, soggy, sluggish, sticky liquid. It wasn't able to consume anything else, or see anything. It was still able to hear though, and that sound stopped in an instant. The slime felt what almost was like the ground moving, but its cells changed and it lost its ability to feel the ground vibrations at that point.

@Zeditha: The pitch of the slime's screech was able to be heard over the other sound, though the slime's fear didn't let it realize that right away. It noticed now, though. Maybe it wasn't initially able to screech at full strength right away? The slime had something stuck in its eat-tube. The ground wasn't moving at all, neither was the flat-black. It was something else that WAS black, or at least it was partially, huge and rising from the other side. The sound stopped all of a sudden...

@Avisk: Unfurling its up-limbs, the slime saw something else that made its flames go out. All of its scales shook on their own, and there were a LOT of scales. More than the slime could understand, but that was to be expected. The creature bearing those flight limbs was... the slime thought Big was big. It wasn't. It was only around twice the size of this new creature's MOUTH. Its body was much bigger, and its flying parts were bigger than that. It... with its limbs outstretched as they now were, the sound stopped, but the slime was able to figure that it was probably... because of its up-limbs.. it... the...

It was half as wide as the flat-black was. Only about as wide as the edge of the flat-black to the double yellow lines in the middle of it. The slime didn't know anything could get that big! It moved its head and looked down at the slime. The slime hurt itself from having to look UP at that angle just to see its face...

@Tch'ah: The slime's new limbs in back of it weren't fully developed; not even enough to allow it to propel itself yet. But falling down into the wet and being totally submerged right away, it was able to feel some organic things below it that it landed on. Organic something, but it was on top of some sort of strange shape. Or maybe the organic was the shape. Either way, something organic but very rotten was now right where the slime was falling.

@Atrocitas: (unlocked: black pigment, fur) The organic was furry in some places, but it was... a totally different texture in other places. There was something else, too. Some small wiggly things, but there were a bunch of them. The slime hadn't absorbed those yet since it was still absorbing through a different part, but it could just start to feel them on its surface.

((Zeditha never grew any eating tubes. Only breathing ones. She has a tongue and lungs but otherwise her insides are slime.))

Suddenly terrified, everything in Zeditha told her to run. This time, she was more than willing to obey. With a scream (somewhere between peregrine, cat and dog), she flew away from the emerging black as fast as she possibly could, abandoning the pretty thing in favour of a random organic skimmed from the pile. She did want something to eat, after all. But other than the one small grab and a pause to scream at the other two slimes, Zeditha's only thought was getting away. This wasn't like Angry - Angry had been defeated. This thing was going to eat them all.

Suddenly, she realised that Small couldn't fly, and Runner couldn't fly that far. She had given Small the brown (green) blob of wing, but she couldn't see any wings actually growing and Runner was still limited. A terrified hesitation caused her to stay, flapping wildly in panic. If she stayed to help her friends, she could be eaten. She definitely didn't want that. But yet, if she flew away and abandoned the other slimes, they would almost certainly be consumed by this Black.

That was enough for her. Avoiding being eaten was important, but somehow, protecting these other two slimes was even more important. Braving the complete terror she felt, Zeditha dropped her organic, wheeled back and tucked in her wings, turning dizzyingly, falling faster than felt natural. But at just the right moment, the instinct attached to the wings kicked in and snapped them open, allowing her to land safely between the other slimes and the Black. There was no way in the world, NOTHING that would make her abandon her friends without a fight. A hiss seethed from her beak as she prepared to launch every attack she had.

((I think she's probably finished her upgrades by now.

So... she has fire ant cheese breath, and stinging euthasol spores. I was planning to use the cobra and black widow for a 'spit' attack, but I hadn't grown that yet.

She also has pearlescent, multicoloured, oyster-strength scales everywhere except her wings, which have oyster-reinforced feathers instead. Her weak spots are probably her legs, which are furry and not hard-scaled, her wings, which are very important but a large target, and her face, which is mostly unprotected. Removing the end of her tail will remove her spore attack, but you'd have to remove her entire head to get rid of the ant cheese breath attack.

Do packrats have claws? Her beak is sharp - it's a predator's beak. She has claws; if not from the packrats, then she grew housecat claws along with the legs without really noticing. xd.png So she has a beak and claws if physical offence is required.))

The slime felt weak and tired, too tired to wonder at the strange physical changes occurring. Instead, hunger ached as the slime's natural inclination to seek out and absorb organic substance was intensified to compensate for the extra growths. The slime needed to devote its attention to the food source that it had landed upon, and it oozed itself best it could to consume the organic something. The slime wondered if the rotting organic was attached to, and therefore probably part of, the unusual shape, or if it had dropped there by happenstance similarly to the slime, and so the slime felt out the forms below as it ate.

Aster was only able to peel a small piece of hair off of the organic before the changes in its body overtook it completely and it fell to the ground, unable to move or see. The slime wondered briefly if it maybe should find something different to eat when it could move again, as this hard thing seemed to be more trouble than it was worth, and Aster could always come back to it later.

With nothing else to concentrate on, Aster couldn't help but focus on the loud sound that it had largely ignored earlier in its frustration at being aware that it was growing immobile again. Whatever it belonged to, it sounded big, if its loudness was any indication. It was almost as loud as that loud sound that had hurt its ears before, although it didn't sound the same. Aster could hear screeching above the loud sound, but only faintly. Aster wished that its eyes were working - it had no idea where whatever was making the sound was, or what it was doing right now. Aster had never heard something so loud before, so it couldn't even tell if it was near or far. Now the sound had stopped? Oh, that couldn't be good. What had the sound-maker found? Was it something nearby?

Now Aster heard a hissing noise. It wasn't from the loud sound-maker - it seemed to be from something closer to its own size. Big, maybe? Was Big nearby? Aster tried to call out to the other slime, but it still couldn't move. Why was Aster always not able to move at these sorts of times - or at least that's what it seemed like.
