The Nerdy Nebulas Lineage Project

Recommended Posts

View links are not allowed in posts. TJ only said that in signatures that view links to frozen or adults could be posted.

Whatever the exceptions may be, fact is, the forum itself cannot distinguish between growing and non-growing things and thus censors all dragcave image links, so trying to post images of your dragons is a fruitless endeavour. smile.gif

@Ha-Ki: I'm talking about images, not view links wink.gif See that "user posted image" in moota's post? It won't show as an actual image because it's a dragcave image. In fact, its URL got automagically changed into "http://please_read_the_rules_before_attempting_to_post_your_eggs1yij.gif/"

@rubyshoes:

Now I am confused... I also read it in that way first, but his post says:

Lineage and view links to adult dragons or frozen hatchlings should be okay to post or put in your signature.

@ Ruby Eyes: I didn't know that they are censored, then it makes no sense to use them of course xd.png (but I sometimes see view links manually removed by mods - sure that they are filtered?)

As far as I know the guidelines were not changed to allow view links in posts (which is shown by the "user posted image" that appears when members try to use a view link rather than a lineage link - if this had changed then I don't think we would still be getting that message) Also, even if it does change sometime in the future the OP of a thread can still make it a rule for their lineage that view links cannot be used.

But the /view/ link was not censored, only the /image/ URL has been changed.

edit: well, it was not automatically censored at least, that still had to be done by forum moderator ...

As for the site rules, I apologize if I misunderstood them; moota still needs to resubmit her dragons with a lineage link. smile.gif

What qualifies as “nerdy” for this lineage?

If it fits into any of the following categories, it automatically qualifies:

- academia

- literature

- technology

- sci-fi

- fantasy

- names containing the word “nerd” or “geek” or any variation thereof in a non-demeaning way

These categories are meant to be very broad in order to incorporate as much nerdiness as possible into the lineage. If you’re unsure about whether or not a name qualifies, feel free to ask.

I can understand general music not being a "nerdy" category, but what about certain genres? I'm thinking specifically of filk and filk's sub-genre of wizarding rock.

For anyone who hasn't heard (or heard of!) this, I've heard filk described as space-age folk music. Quite a bit of it is written based on sci-fi or fantasy fandom... stories, movies, tv shows, etc. Wizarding rock is written based on the Harry Potter fandom.

This one is a very early Star Trek filk by Leslie Fish. The video quality is not great, but it's a riot all the same. (sci-fi)

Performed by Jonathon Coulton, this one is a tribute to all those poor ST:TOS guys who died in every episode... you know, the ones with the red shirts. (sci-fi)

This is another Leslie Fish gem, this one about the Society for Creative Anachronism (a group that does historical re-creation type stuff) and what would happen if TEOTWAWKI happened during the Pennsic War. (fantasy with sci-fi elements)

Yet another Leslie Fish offering, all about D&D. Can anything get much geekier? (fantasy)

Ghost spaceship, anyone? This version performed by Vic Tyler, although the song was written by Duane Elms. Not the best quality, it sounds to me as though the uploader's cassette (remember those?) might have been getting worn. Very good original song, though. (sci-fi)

I Believe in Nargles One of my favorite wrock songs by the Whomping Willows, in honor of Luna Lovegood. (fantasy/literature)

This is a live performance by the Blibbering Humdingers. I've actually known these folks in passing since the mid-1990s, thanks to the SCA, as they did SCA filk long before they got into the wrock scene. I talked to them at Dragon*Con last August and got teased that I still own some of his earliest SCA cassettes. (fantasy/literature)

Hope anyone who cares to listen to my examples enjoys the nerdy goodness!

And can we get filk music as a category? Or would it be covered under the umbrella of whatever the filk is based on?

Sorry if this is a stupid question everyone but I do not know how to do a lineage link on a caveborn. Can someone please tell me? Thank you.

Replace the word "view" with "lineage" ex. http://dragcave.net/lineage/mVQoz

There's also a band called... actually, their name isn't allowed on here, but it's two words and the first one is Goblin. But a lot of their music is about nerdy stuff, like their second album is called Come With Me if You Want to Live.

Tiga - Correct. This lineage is only for caveborn or purebred Nebulas.

dustpuppy - Nebula added!

catstaff - Music (like television) is a type of media that may or may not be nerdy. If the dragon is named after a song or band that falls into any of the "nerdy" categories listed, it qualifies. smile.gif

moota - Thank you for the lineage link, but I need you to resubmit the grey form please. It makes it easier to get all the info I need onto the list. smile.gif

It would need a while longer to prove it is successful and has enough members before a group account would be approved.
