Posted November 1, 2013 Okay, yes, I appreciate art. No, I'm not saying remove things from the site. But it would be nice if we could avoid triggering people. I'm not nearly as bad as I used to be with spiders, but I still do not want to see them. I have a friend who is triggered by the sight of organs, so that's also fun with the obscene number of eyeballs that happen to be offered. So maybe offer a "phobia filter" mode? I understand that the images are dynamic, so I can't automagically block them with an image blocker. I also understand that since they're dynamic, TJ can't just say "lalala these are x" by static image links. But if there's a way to tag them as certain content in the database and offer blocking lists by content, or even allow users to manually select certain treats not to see in their baskets? You could offer a few default lists (creepy crawlies, body parts, etc.) that would work proactively from this year on (new spiders, body parts, etc. will not show up when added) and allow the user to tick certain treats not to see that aren't filtered by those lists. Yes, no? Maybe? Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) I like the idea. I think being able to manually remove treats [and easter eggs] from the collection is the best option. Edited November 1, 2013 by Pokemonfan13 Share this post Link to post

Posted November 1, 2013 Agreed. Being able to skip and hide/remove items or otherwise make the collecting a little more user friendly in this way would be fantastic. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 Yes please please please PLEASE! This year I forgot about the "not static" thing and attempted to block all the spiders, and BOY was I freaked when I clicked on my newest treat and the page loaded and all those spiders were back! This could easily be brushed off as "trick-or-treat is only a week a year" or something, but I think it's a very fair request to be able to participate in such a fun event *without* being horribly triggered. Posted November 1, 2013 Doesn't bother me to see the various sprites. However, my sister is an arachnophobe so I can understand the problem. (It's also the most common phobia on the planet, unless you count public speaking which psych texts do not.) If it can be done on a case by case basis, then I would very much like to see this. and ya'll can send me the spiders and other creepy crawlies, I love bugs/spiders Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 Sounds good to me. I know triggers can really hurt people, so anything to prevent that get my support. <3 Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) I am extremely arachnophobic (as in, I freeze, panic and hyperventilate at the sight of spiders) but I understand that these are pixels and they cannot hurt me. Edited November 1, 2013 by Flamingo Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) I'm not affected, so it's hard for me to understand what's so bad about seeing certain pixellations. What I do understand, however, is the desire to have a way to avoid seizure-triggering treats (or easter eggs, for that matter). I guess that, overall, this is a good idea after all. Potential groups: - spiders - bats - body parts - blood - corpses - slimy stuff - seizure triggers - animations (might give a new pic from the animation for each refresh) Edited November 1, 2013 by olympe Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 Yes, something absolutely should be done about this. I'm so glad you made this thread - thank you! Many people think Halloween is awesome but at the same time there are certain things that they may not want to see over and over, or, in order to avoid that, click once to get it out of the way then have in their treat bucket for forever. I think it's bad gameplay design as well to have something like a collectable type minigame get backed up, where you can't collect any more if there's a certain one you don't want. I like your suggestion of a trigger filter, as that means you can proactively avoid seeing something. I'd also previously thought of maybe having a little "x" come by the side of each treat, so that if you don't want to collect it you can hit the x. Then there could be a clickable link in your basket labeled "Treats You Skipped" and when you click it, the page could say "These treats are ones you've skipped; they will not appear in your treat basket permanently. Click the treats to put them in your treat basket permanently" or something like that. (That way if you made a mistake or change your mind you can still get the treat.) I don't like my idea as much as yours because mine means you still do end up seeing things at least once. It at least would be better than currently, though, as you could get rid of the treats as soon as you see one you don't like, never have to see them again if you don't want to and don't have to put it in your treat basket to do it, and can go on to collecting the next treat. Would it work to add something to your idea, so that you can have the proactive filters, and then a section of the treat basket (a separate page) that shows the treats that are in whatever filtered sections you check? That way if you do want to change your mind and check out the treats you can. I don't suppose that many people who have issues with triggers would want to do that (although I could be wrong!) but I think gameplay-wise it would be best to have the treats remain available just in case. Thank you again for making this thread - it's an important issue to me and I haven't had the energy to make a thread myself so I was so pleased to see this. <3 Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 I completely support this idea. I've got triggers myself that are for other things but I've started to hate how my favorite holiday is being overtaken by blood and gore. I was incredibly surprised at finding the eye on a stick here. Share this post Link to post

For example: This is Joltik, Joltik is a fuzzy spider. Some people may not be triggered by Joltik when they may by other spiders. And it also means that they won't miss out on any - if they overcome their phobia they can have them from their nonpermanent list whilst with filters they might be gone forever. (I don't know how they work each year, so) Finally, people without phobias may want to use this too, for example to display their favourites only to the world. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) *cuddles Joltik*<3 I'm not arachnophobic, gore-phobic or such, but there is one flashy animation that truly irritates my eyes and I'd prefer to get rid of it somehow. Yeah sure, I'd simply use AdBlocker to remove this one particular image but it's not a real solution. Support. Edited November 1, 2013 by Light Concorde Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 I was going to suggest that the image URLs just be made static since that seems like it would be a lot simpler from a programming standpoint, but then it occurred to me that that would be no help to players who access the site from public computers and/or multiple devices. If it can be done, I'd love to see something like this implemented. If not, (and/or in the meantime), giving the eggs/treats/etc stable image locations would afford users the ability to give themselves at least some degree of protection. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) none of the trick or treat sprites bother me but i think this would definitely be good if it can be done! Edited November 1, 2013 by Switch Share this post Link to post
Posted November 2, 2013 I wasn't triggered by anything, but I definitely understand that some of them might. Not a bad idea to get rid of some of the treats you collect! Share this post Link to post
Posted November 2, 2013 I think that would be a very considerate thing to do. I'd hate to react that strongly to an image and have to repeatedly face it on a game I played for fun. I, for example, can't bear animal cruelty, and while I've signed many petitions regarding corporate cruelty to animals, some time back, I began finding it very difficult to sign petitions on a petition site I belong to, or even go there sometimes, because the number of specific instances of individuals doing horrific things to helpless animals endlessly brought up - about which nothing can actually be done - and kept prominent apparently forever, left me emotionally/mentally cycling these and becoming chronically extremely upset and horrified over the long term to no purpose, so I can understand that certain things should simply be avoided by some people, for their emotional health. Posted November 2, 2013 I support this 100% I have a severe phobia of insects and spiders and every year on Halloween in dragcave I get-I guess-mild triggers from seeing very detailed sprites of various bugs and I'd rather avoid being itchy and paranoid, jumping at each tiny spot on my screen because I saw a dumb little pixel bug on a dragon collecting site (and sometimes even nightmares from them believe it or not) I absolutely love the art and effort the artists put into them but it's really not that fun of an event when you have to go through something like that for hours after just seeing a pixel spider suddenly appear on your screen an option to hide those kinds of treats before they show up, but still be able to click on them and add them to my basket, would be perfect Share this post Link to post
