Mermaids and Mayhem

Recommended Posts

Maktow swam as fast as he could, determined to catch some fish for Ever. They were slippery little things, and he wasn't exactly a hunter considering he was male, but he his best. Soon he was sinking his claws into a gray fish, biting into it to hold it in his mouth while he sped after another. About ten minutes later he returned to Ever with three fish , two in each hand and one in his mouth. He looked incredibly pleased.

"Thanks!" Ever said smiling and taking the fish from Maktow, "Can you follow?" she asked gesturing towards he small fire, "You don't have to."

The merman's eyes traveled to the fire and suddenly grew round with curiosity. "What is it?" He breathed, wriggling onto the sand to try and touch it. It was so.. pretty. And it felt warm, which was a strange sensation for Maktow.

"Don't touch it!" Ever said suddenly, grabbing Maktow's arm, "Hot, don't touch" she explained letting go of his arm, wondering if he knew what hot was. Taking the fish and laying them on leaves in the coals Ever tried to explain, "The heat will cook the fish."

Luckily she saved him just in time from a nasty burn. Maktow turned slightly pink in embarrassment, looking up at her. "Why warm the fish?" He asked, confused. Why make the fish hot?

"Making them hot cooks them, humans can't eat the fish unless it is cooked." Ever explained realized hoe weird that would sound if she had never heard of cooking.

"Why?" Maktow blinked innocent red eyes up at her. Why couldn't they eat normal fish? Mermaids did all the time. It was how they lived. Maybe humans didn't like the taste? To a guy who only ever ate fish, it was pretty okay.

"We get sick." Ever said, "Do merpeople get sick?" she asked. If they don't he's going to have no idea what sick is anyway. Ever thought suddenly. Taking the fish out of the coals Ever unwrapped them. Seeing that they were done Ever turned to the other humans, "Do you want some?" she asked them as the smell of cooked fish wafted across the beach.

Grantaire wiggled his nose slightly when a strange smell filled the air. His head turned towards the smell of food as he regarded the the human that the smell seemed to be coming from silently. He paused before looking up at his human and nudged him towards the other human with the back of his tail. The smell was probably food but he had already eaten. The human, on the other hand, probably needed to eat still.

Matthew was caught off guard by the nudge to the back, and stiffened. Once he realized it was Grantaire, he relaxed. Slowly, he stood up and grabbed for his walking stick. Matthew could smell the food cooking, but could only get a general idea of its location. Getting too close could end badly.

Namina watched as Maktow tried to hunt for the humans. A small clicking noise escaped her, presumably laughter. Need me to hunt? I've had enough of the sun anyways. the mermaid offered. Males were useless with this sort of thing. Honestly, they really couldn't do anything.

"Matthew." Ever said quietly knowing he would hear and know where both she and the fire were, "Go a little more to your left."

Maktow looked at the fish, sniffing curiously before looking up at Ever. "Sometimes. Not usually," he replied, blinking several times. That was an acrid smell.. He didn't think he would like it. Gazing over at Namina, he gave a sheepish nod.

"Would you like to try some?" Ever asked as she tore off a small piece of fish and popped it into her mouth. Mmmmmm tastes like home Ever thought to herself

Matthew listened to Ever's intructions carefully. He slowly took each step towards the fire, prodding the sand with his walking stick before he did. No amount of squinting made him feel secure walking. Eventually, he slowly lowered himself down by the fire.

Namina nodded in response, and slid back into the water. A few wriggles of her tail, and she was deep enough to find some of the larger fish. If Maktow thought his catch was impressive, he was sorely mistaken. Too bad she hadn't brought her spear. Namina circled around a school of Cod and herded it towards shallower waters. A sudden and violent attack was rewarded with a fish that was difficult to keep a hold of. Even when she returned close to shore, the bloodied fish struggled madly. The mermaid dug her claws into it and chattered angrily as she struggled.

Grantaire watched as Matthew went to the other human then dragged himself back to the water. He slipped into the ocean and relaxed in the water with a soft sigh. Laying on the sand was so uncomfortable. Being in the wat was so much nicer. He relaxed backwards before suddenly bolting upright when Namina returned with a thrashing fish. "Do you need help?" he asked with a frown. There wasn't much he'd be able to do but he might as well extend the offer anyway.

As Mattew sat down Ever handed him a large piece of fish, "Here eat some." She said picking up another piece for herself. Edited by Raven301

The food was accepted without question. He was cold and wet and hungry, so solving one of those problems was good. Matthew chewed slowly on the meat he was given and tried not to scarf it all down at once.

If you could, help me kill this thing! Namina answered. She would've killed it with a hypersonic screech, but that would've been loud enough to kill too many fish than she needed. If it was one thing mermaids were concerned about, it was taking only what they needed. Of course, Namina wouldn't be surprised if both Grantaire and Maktow were too weak to help her, since males were basically good for nothing but companionship and repopulation. The structure of a pod of merpeople was similar to a pride of lions. There was usually more females than males (who usualy did the hunting and necessary fighting), and the males were sort of there. Their role was still respected, of course.

Grantaire hadn't actually expected Namina to take him up on his offer. He paused then quickly darted over to the much larger mermaid as she struggled with the fish. He stopped as he glanced at his hands then made a face and simply snapped his teeth over the fish's head. That would kill it right? He had claws but he had no idea how to use them. Teeth were used for eating so it seemed like a bright idea to just bite its head and hope it stopped struggling.

The water around them was flooded with wisps of scarlet as both merpeople struggled with the catch. It did eventually lose the fight, but didn't give up easily. Namina relaxed once the fish had died, and carefully pulled her claws out of it. That should be good enough. It was a messy kill, but fish was fish. Except humans seemed picky with their food. Oh well, this would be good enough.

Grantaire held on to the fish, biting down until its struggling stopped. As soon as it did, he quickly let go and backed off slightly, licking the blood around his mouth. He had just eaten... but he was still hungry. Still, he was male and therefore did not get to eat first. The fish belonged to Namina.

Namina took the fish once Grantaire had let go, and paddled back to shore. She flopped the bloodied body onto the beach, and darted away afterwards. She too was hungry, and planned on getting a good, fast kill that would satisfy her hunger. The same school of fish was a distance away now, and wary of the predator that lurked around them. This time, Namina was fast enough to snatch one of the fish on the outside and snap its neck cleanly. By the tome she returned to Grantaire, she had already taken her portion. Most of the head had been stripped clean (the eyes and brains were a favorite among many undersea creatures), and was a section of the belly. The rest she offered to the merman. He needed to eat too.

Grantaire watched as Namina darted away then swam a short distance to a nearby rock. He pulled himself onto it to sunbath and rest, trying to ignore the delicious smell from nearby and food in general. When Namina approached again, he raised his head and looked at the fish extended to him. He glanced up at her then took the fish from her with a smile. "Thank you," he said with a smile as he held the fish up to his mouth.

Maktow accepted the small portion of fish and sniffed it suspisciously, taking a small bite. It tasted weird.. All wrong. He found that he disliked the taste, which while tolerable, wasn't tasty. "Do not like it," he mumbled apologetically, holding up the piece so she could have it back.

Makes sense Ever thought to herself, he is a merman after all. "That's all right." Ever said taking the fish back and eating it, "I would never eat raw fish. Do merpeople sleep?" Ever asked wondering how that would work.

Maktow nodded, glad that she wasn't offended. He just didn't like the taste of cooked fish, it was unnatural. "Yes," he replied, "just like humans." They usually slept in kelp, or on the ocean floor.
