Mermaids and Mayhem

Recommended Posts

Scrambling away from the edge of the boat Ever slipped and fell heavily in sandals that her father had insisted that she wear. Cursing Ever yanked them off her feet and looked around for the captain. Where was he? Suddenly Ever spotted the middle aged man swimming furiously out to sea, Where is he going? Ever wondered gazing after him. Quickly her attention snapped back to her situation as the boat groaned and split in half with a crash and a large wave that knocked Ever off her feet again. Coughing up water Ever clung to her half of the ship as she pulled herself to her feet, gripping the handrail. As the ship groaned again Ever tried to remember what her father said to do in situations like this, Stay on the wreck? Swim out to sea?

Maktow slowed down and stopped, pouting as the fish got away. Then he turned to Grantaire and smiled brightly, momentary sadness dissipating. "But I was having fun! That fish was blue with a yellow stripe, which is weird because I saw a yellow fish with a blue stripe yesterday!" He chattered eagerly, gesturing wildly with his hands. A loud crack stopped him, making the young merman look past the elder one in shock. Was that.. A boat? Breaking in half?

Natalia was suddenly thrown to one side as the boat pitched, managing to catch herself on the rail. Was the captain drunk?! She opened her mouth to holler when she saw the extent of the damage. Oh.

Grantaire stared at the other merman then shrugged his shoulders slightly. As long as he was careful and didn’t get in any trouble with any sharks, he was fine with the younger merman chasing small animals.

Hearing a loud crack, he quickly turned around and stared at the collapsing human ship. They… they were not supposed to do that. People were clinging to the sides of the ship as it began to sink beneath the waves. Some were swimming away but the others seemed to be avoiding the water. Could they not swim? ”Come on,” he said, spurred into action by the trouble. They may be separate species and try to remain hidden but those people were in trouble. He wasn’t going to let them drown. He dove beneath the waves and swam towards the sinking ship, hoping to rescue at least one person before they drowned.

Maktow stared at the boat with wide eyes, frozen in place for a brief moment. Then he snapped out of it and chased after Grantaire, trying not to panic. "What do we do?" He fretted, diving below to look around for people. He couldn't see any under the waves.

Natalia clung to the railing desparately, panicking as the vessel sank even lower. She thought she'd be able to stay aboard when it sank, but then the wood cracked again and she was falling with a scream. Then she hit the water and was sinking, clawing uselessly at the waves as she sank.

"Get the ones that can't swim on something that floats!" the merman ducked under the water and raced among the debris, searching. A few humans weren't moving and seemed to already be dead... But one was still thrashing about. He quickly swam forward as she sunk between the waves and tried to force her back up to the surface.

Natalia stopped struggling as a pair of arms wrapped around her. Everything was getting dark, but she faintly registered that they were moving, up hopefully- yes, now they were breaking the surface of the water. She gasped and coughed out water, struggling to find something to Cling to.

Grantaire held the struggling human aloft, not caring for secrecy but only trying to make sure that she lived. Wrapping an arm around her middle, he propelled them both to a piece of the ship that was still afloat. Well, it wasn't a piece of the ship so much as it was driftwood now. He tried to push her onto the drift wood so she could hang onto it or even maybe lay on it. It seemed big enough at least.

Still spluttering, Natalia pulled herself up with shaking arms and lay still for a moment, just focusing on breathing. Alive, thank the gods. Alive, but thanks to who? She turned over to squint at her rescuer, eyes widening at the way his skin turned blue the lower down his body it got. "Th-thank you," she stammered, not sure what she was looking out. But it was beautiful.

As the ship lurched again Ever made up her mind. Yanking the long sleeve off her shirt Ever quickly dove into the water and began strongly swimming to a piece of coating driftwood a little ways from the boat. As she dove under the waves Ever spotted the hazy form of a man below her. He was obviously swimming, deeper? Why wasn't he swimming towards the surface? Diving after him Ever suddenly realized, he had a tail. I must be hallucinating. Ever bought to herself, Mermen don't exist outside fairy tails. Swimming strongly towards the surface Ever quickly broke out of the water and remembered the boat and her current situation. Grabbing onto the driftwood Ever stuck her head under again to look for the man. Edited by Raven301

Grantaire stared at the human as she stammered out something in her own language. Ignoring whatever it was she had said, he propped his elbow on the driftwood then gently reached up and ran his hand over her head, checking for any hidden injuries. She seemed alright. He glanced around at the shipwreck then darted away, returning a few seconds later with a shivering dog and cat that he placed on the driftwood next to the girl. "Maktow!" he yelled. "Have you got someone? I'm going to take these ones to shore. I can't help anymore."

Maktow ignored Grantaire's shouts as he swam beneath the crashing waves, searching for people in the water. He locked eyes with a girl before she managed to swim to the surface- at least she could swim. Still uncertain, he swam after her and popped out of the water beside her, red ear fins dripping. "Are you okay?" he chirruped in his own language.

Natalia could only stare at him as he made weird clicking and chirruping noises. Okay.. So no English. Shivering, she clung to the piece of wood and continued to stare at the creature pushing her. What was it? The body of a human and a fish.. Merpeople?

((Accepted both of you!))

Grantaire quickly grew frustrated with pushing the board and instead grabbed a piece of rope floating in the water. He tied it to one part of the driftwood and pulled it snug before taking the other end and biting down on it. He dove under the waves and began swimming at full sleep towards shore, dragging the wood behind him. The other merman would have to fend for himself. With an island not too far off, he managed to bring those he had rescued to land fairly quickly, at which point he slowed down and resumed pushing the raft towards shore. The island was small and pretty much abandoned but he wasn't sure where else to bring her.

Claire swam up to the surface as frantically as she could, gasping for air. 'One moment I'm on board, the next I'm falling into the ocean!' She thought, frantically looking around. Claire saw a piece of board floating nearby, and she swam towards it. After she had tossed herself onto the plank, Claire noticed something...strange. 'I swear...those people weren't on the ship before...' But before she could analyze the situation, a wave came and knocked Claire off the board, dragging her under.

Giving a small shout of surprise Ever stared at what was now quite obviously a merman in front of her. As he made some high echoey sounds and some clicking noises, Ever realized he was trying to talk to her. "Uhhh I don't speak mermaid." she said wondering if he understood her. How is this even possible? Ever wondered openly staring at the merman's human torso that slowly faded to bright red scales. Edited by Raven301

Maktow opened his mouth and closed it again, unsure of what the sounds coming out of her mouth were supposed to mean. They couldn't understand each other.. Or could they? He'd swam close enough to boats before to hear them speaking. He hesitated, looking away before pointing at her and asking, "G-g-girl?" Did he get that sound right? He started swimming slowly, pulling her piece of driftwood with him.

Natalia staggered into the water once it was shallow, dragging herself mostly onto land and collapsing. This was a nice patch of sand.. Maybe she'd just pass out here..

Grantaire held onto the driftwood as the human collapsed on the beach. He tutted softly then dragged himself onto the beach, grimacing as his tail dragged across the sand. He balanced himself on one arm then reached out with the other and prodded her questioningly. "Are you dead?" he asked, leaning over her so his hold locks nearly touched the back of her head.

"Yes." Ever said after a moment, then she pointed to herself, "Ever." she said slowly then pointed at the merman, "You?" she asked hoping he got the message. "Name?" Blinking again Ever rubbed her eyes, a merman had just spoken to her, wow. With that thought Ever just stared the the merman for a moment. Coming back to herself Ever looked at the merman's eyes, Red. she thought, ensnared in his gaze.

Claire managed to swim back to the surface, looking around for another object to cling onto. Another piece of wood was near her, and she tossed herself onto it again, this time holding it with all her might. 'Paddle to the shore.' She thought to herself. But...where was the shore? Looking around, Claire found a nearby island that she might be able to reach if she put her might into it. 'Come on, you can do it! Get to that island...for...for him.'

Natalia groaned, turning her head slightly to see what was blocking out the warm sun. She inhaled sharply when it was a handsome man. A man that had scales and a tail. "H-hello," she stammered, caught in his gaze.

Maktow's face split into a bright smile. His black and red colors might look scary, but he was actually like the little brother of the pod. He was sweet, curious, and almost always cheerful. She was pointing at him now- his name? Did she want his name? He gave a series of high clicks that were his name before he realized she wouldn't be able to say that. "M-Mah-ktoww," Maktow pronounced slowly, splashing his tail against the water.

Grantaire didn't have much idea what personal space was because his face was literally inches away from the girl's. He looked her over then raised a pale, slightly fish-like hand and pressed it to her forehead. She seemed alright. But why had she collapsed? Besides that, he didn't speak human very well. He didn't usually go near ships unless it was to hear a bit of the music that floated off them and across the waves. "Allo," He repeated, struggling to form the words. It was incredibly difficult for him to manipulate his vocal chords like that.

As the merman smiled Ever found herself smiling back. "Mahktow?" she asked still smiling, glad they could at least minimally communicate. "Mahktow is a merman?" she asked pointing at his tail and wondering if he would understand.

Maktow cocked his head to one side, not quite getting it. He'd never heard that word before. "Maktow.. a merman," he repeated curiously, nose wrinkling in thought as he looked back at his tail. She seemed surprised, which really, he didn't blame her. "Land," he said as they approached the beach, giving his tail a few more good flaps to get them there. Movement caught his attention, and he noticed that there was yet another human in the water. He hesitated, then looked at Ever apologetically. "Maktow help her," he said, pleased with his fluency, before slipping off into the water again and swimming towards Claire.

Natalia's eyes widened as he touched her, not really afraid but also not sure how to respond. He couldn't speak English it seemed, so she was just going to have to make due. "Thank you, for saving me," she said, smiling slightly to show her gratitude. She couldn't help but stare at his tail though, reaching out a hand to touch it.
