LOTR meets Stargate

[Me neither. That's why I left it as an assumption tongue.gif]

At the halt, O'Neill took stock of his team's condition while stretching his legs out to try and stop his knee locking up. The new kid was in a bad way, but it looked like Teal'c had that covered. If he was surprised at Brod approaching Carter rather than Daniel, he hid it well.

Teal'c declined Alex's canteen and acknowledged the thanks with a slight incline of his head. He kept an eye on Alex as he leaned forward, having already noted his difficulty in the march.

At Brod's approach, Carter replied:

"I understand." She didn't particularly want to get caught in another battle, then at Brod's gesture towards Alex, she explained,

"I think he's just unused to long marches. His chosen occupation trains the mind rather than the body." Carter wasn't skilled enough in diplomacy to know how to correct the assumption without causing offence. Though medic was a mild error - most of them could be considered medics, at least in the field.

"Perhaps while we rest - you could tell us a bit more about the situation?" Carter asked Brod, wondering what SG-1 had walked into this time. She could ignore her arm - it was just a scratch after all.

Eretta tended to those in the camp that needed extra assistance - staying nearby in case Brod required her presence. Though so far it seemed that the newcomers were not causing trouble.

Daniel - being slightly more used to the rigours of the field - recovered his breath. Now he was torn between helping his fellow archaeologist and asking the questions he had about everything. Seeing that Brod had approached Carter, he mentally shrugged and moved over to Alex. Sam would call him if she needed him - plus she should be able to guess at the questions he would ask.

Though Alex’s lungs still felt like they were on fire, he was regaining his breath and was more embarrassed than anything at that point. Thus, when heard the question about him and saw Daniel approaching him, he gave a small wave of his hand as he said, “I’m fine,” he coughed, “really. I just need to rest for a bit.”

Teal’c raised a brow at Alex’s claim, but the fact that the archeologist hadn’t lost consciousness yet was, as far as he could tell, a good sign so he didn’t say anything. Of course, he also didn’t go anywhere just in case Alex did need more assistance.

Brod nodded at Sam’s explanation of Alex’s condition, but when she asked for more information, his brow furrowed in confusion as he said, “I do not understand…There is nothing more to the situation, as you call it than we have already discussed. We were informed of the lights and that the Enemy was moving his forces toward them; we moved our forces to counter what we believed was what the Enemy was conjuring; we arrived at the stone structure to see your arrival; the Enemy’s force attacked first which informed us that you were not summoned by the Enemy; we fought together against the Enemy; and now we are traveling to the Elves’ encampment.” He wasn’t deliberately trying to be difficult, he simply couldn’t fathom that anyone could not know about the Enemy and the war that they were currently fighting against him. As such, he interpreted the term ‘situation’ to mean just what they were currently dealing with.

Going over to Sam and the native, Jack silently listened their conversation but when no new information was given, he decided that he’d about had enough of diplomacy. “Okay, but who is this Enemy?” he asked, “And for that matter… who are you?”

((Just so you know, I’m going to be out of town and net-less from the 6th to the 13th. I know, right about the time you get your computer back…sorry to have to keep you waiting for that long. sad.gif ))

((That's ok - the date given for laptop return is only contracted date - it could be later. So I may still be waiting for laptop.))

Carter mentally facepalmed at the Colonel's bluntness, but she was used to it and knew he didn't mean to be insulting. Though usually Daniel would be the one to smooth things over if offence was called.

At this point in time, she chose to observe Brod's reaction. She was sure that there were some cultures that only took offence if offence was assumed to be given by an apology being offered. Again Daniel would be the one to know for certain.

A slight shift in her position so that both O'Neill and Brod were in her field of view indicated two things:

1) to Brod, it looked like she was acknowledging O'Neill's presence and questions.

2) to O'Neill, it meant she was ready to intervene if needed. And that meant she thought he may have given insult with his direct questions.

Of course, Carter could guess that O'Neill wasn't about to apologise for getting to the point. Unless he really wanted to throw people a curveball.

[both/neither may be able to read the double meaning behind her movements, with her military training, she's reasonably good at hiding motives. O'Neill being former Black Ops however is unlikely to be fooled.]

At the look on Sam’s face, Jack simply raised his eyebrows at her in an expression that asked ‘what?’, but the look on the native’s face had him slightly concerned that he may have crossed some sort of line. However, before he could say anything to make things better – or worse – the native gave what could only be described as a gruff chuckle.

Brod was momentarily stunned by Jack’s question; not because he asked a question, but because he asked that question. When he registered the second part of the man’s question, he realized that he had in fact not introduced himself and figured that perhaps he was asking about the Enemy to not draw attention to that unfortunate oversight. With a short chuckle, Brod said, “You are right, lad, I should have given my name when you gave yours and I do ask your pardon, but there is no need to jest about not knowing the Enemy… I am Brod son of Brind.”

As his breathing calmed down, Alex became aware of just how tired his legs were but he was already feeling embarrassed so he did his best to ignore that ache. Fortunately, he was near enough to hear what was going on which helped keep his mind off of himself. He was initially surprised by how frank O’Neill had been, but then the native referred to O’Neill as ‘lad’, and Alex couldn’t help but raise a brow as he studied him. Though the native was obviously a fighter, he didn’t look to be much older than 35 while, if he recalled correctly, O’Neill was somewhere around 46 or 47. Thus, he couldn’t figure out why this Brod would be calling O’Neill a lad… Unless he’s not as young as he looks, Alex thought as he wondered if the smaller warrior wasn’t as human as he appeared. He was almost tempted to ask Brod what he was, but he figured that would be rather rude so he remained silent.

[Lol it drives Daniel mad that he can't work out how the military pair can have entire conversations without saying a word.... and yes Jack O'Neill does play dumb on most occasions. It's useful to have opponents underestimate him.

Eretta's doing camp stuff, so feel free to intercept/interrupt her.]

Having opted to take the wait and see approach, Carter merely returned O'Neill's questioning raised eyebrow with one of her trademark half-smiles, half-glares. This one meaning, 'you know exactly 'what?' so don't play dumb with me.'

It seemed that offence was not caused, based on the chuckle issued by Brod. At least that answers one question... though not the main one....

Now the one-sided introduction issue had been resolved - mostly, the rest of their escort group remained nameless, Carter considered how she could broach the subject of the Enemy without causing problems that might result in them needing a fast exit.

-----

Seeing that Alex had recovered his breath, Daniel turned his attention back to the conversation. Unlike Carter, he wasn't quite able to hide his frustration at O'Neill's lack of tact, but wasn't about to interrupt unless absolutely necessary. He had about the same amount faith in Sam's ability to pull them out of the proverbial fire as he did in Jack's ability to get them in it with his bluntness.

Keeping an eye and ear out, Daniel switched to assessment mode. The brief break was going to have to suffice to get as much observational clues as possible about their companions.

Of course, he wasn't staying completely silent, he was going to bounce ideas and observations off the new member of SG-1.

"Looks like our guides hold family in high esteem." Daniel observed, "If that introduction is anything to go by." He did tense up slightly - wondering how Jack was going to take being called a 'lad'. And for that matter whether Sam would be able to diffuse it if he took it badly. Normally I wouldn't worry, though her earlier injury would hamper her physical ability to intervene....

Jack had been prepared for many things from their guide – from taking offense to refusing to give names – but he wasn’t prepared to be called ‘lad’. He had long passed the lad age, and though he knew that it really wasn’t all that important, in true Jack form, he couldn’t let it go unaddressed. “I’m sorry,” he said in a slightly incredulous tone, “but…’lad’?”

Confused by Jack’s response, Brod’s brow furrowed as he said, “You are not as young as the lass there,” he pointed to Eretta, “I grant, but it is difficult to gauge the age of the Race of Men. I assure you, no offense was intended.” He almost commented on how short of lives Men lived, but was felt it might cause further offense, so left it unsaid.

Jack was actually thrown off by Brod’s response for he had been thinking that these were all humans; short and hairy sure, but still humans. He opened his mouth to say something but after a silent moment, simply closed his mouth again as he thought, Nope. Turning to two the archeologists, he gestured toward Brod as he said, “Daniel?”

---

Alex nodded at Daniel’s observation, and he kept his voice quiet enough so that only Daniel and possibly Teal’c would hear as he said, “Seems that way, but it’s a little odd that they’d say ‘son of’ rather than using a patronym…You know, like Brindson or O’Brind? Think it could be a translation from a different language?” When Brod pointed to the young woman from earlier, Alex found himself thinking about the ‘Race of Men’ comment as he looked over to her. With his previous thought about Brod not being human essentially confirmed, he then wondered if ‘Race of Men’ meant the same as human or were these taller natives not human either…and were the woman’s tasks keeping her nearby on purpose or was that just a coincidence? He was about to ask Daniel but Jack beat him to the punch, so nodded to tell Daniel to go ahead. However, though he was watching what the others were doing, he did lean a little toward Teal’c as he quietly asked, “Think she’s deliberately sticking by us?”

Teal’c had already noticed the woman’s actions, but didn’t see any threat in them. Thus, at Alex’s question he simply said, “Indeed I do, Alex Honami.”

[ 'Jack the lad' - that's going to be my nickname for O'Neill from now on. xd.png *supresses amusement for sake of RPing* ]

"It's possible that it is an effect of translation...." Daniel mused, while watching Jack's stunned reaction and subsequent summons.

"I also suspect that they think Sam's in charge - based on the fact she was approached first...." He didn't add that he thought it odd, but it certainly stood out considering most of their guides were male.

Then he turned his mind towards solving Jack's confusion.

----

Carter bit back a grin at O'Neill's reaction, and after Brod explained his reasoning, leaned towards her CO and softly suggested:

"Take it as a compliment."

Then she straightened back up, taking in the differences between Brod and the one he indicated as being of the 'Race of Man'. As well as the implications that entailed.

----

Joining the trio, Daniel speculated:

"Race of Men could just be another term for Tau'ri." Of course, his tone did indicate that it was only a possibility, and an unlikely one at that. The other alternative would - for anyone other than SG-1 - be completely unbelievable, that there were non-humans present.

Well, they did mention elves......

----

Eretta, while tending to her tasks, had been keeping a curious eye on SG-1. She was far enough away to not eavesdrop on any conversation - but close enough that they didn't have to yell or make a fuss if they wished to speak to her.

Though there was something she could do, considering the camp would be short and may not provide enough of a break for those of lesser stamina. She included herself in that category - though physically fit, there was no way she'd be able to keep pace with the Dwarves for long - not without her horse's aid anyway.

Reaching into her saddlebag, she extracted a small wrapped package. Unwrapping it part way, Eretta broke the contents into smaller pieces.

Then she offered it to those still resting. Some partook of it, others refused. Eretta then extended it to Teal'c and Alex.

"Lembas bread?"

[Otherwise seen as broken biscuits.... at least that's the closest Earth food equivalent.]

((It’s a pity no one ever called him that in the show…that would’ve been amusing to see. xd.png ))

At Carter’s comment, Jack raised an eyebrow at her but before he could say anything, Daniel came up. “Just see what you can find out,” Jack told him in an exasperated tone as he took a small step back. By that point, he was fairly well done with diplomacy.

Brod watched the strangers with uncertainty, and his confusion only deepened when Daniel mentioned the word ‘Tau’ri’. However, he was beginning to understand that he should have perhaps approached their diplomat instead of their leader, but he wasn’t sure if that would have cut down any on the confusion. Shrugging the thought away as Jack made room for Daniel, Brod looked at the diplomat and said, “Well l-Daniel, though I am not familiar with the term ‘Tau’ri’, the Elves do have other names for the Race of Men, but I do not know what they are.”

---

Though Alex was confused by Daniel’s observation, he did understand why Daniel thought that. “Huh,” he said quietly as he tried to figure out what they could have said or done to give the natives the idea that Sam was in charge. He was so lost in his thoughts that he hadn’t noticed the young woman come up to them. At her offer he was so intrigued that he was about to accept when the advice that Sam had given him earlier came to mind and had his hand freezing in mid-air. “Uh,” he started as he looked to Teal’c for guidance.

Teal’c hadn’t moved as the native woman approached, and at Alex’s questioning look, he glanced briefly at the innocent looking food before looking straight ahead again as he said, “That would not be advisable.”

Realizing that tact wasn’t one of Teal’c’s strong points, Alex lowered his hand as he gave the woman an apologetic smile and said, “I’m sorry, but we’re going to have to pass at this time.” Then hoping to smooth over any possible offense, and possibly gain some more information he added, “May I ask your name?”

[it would have been. It also fits with his occasionally childlike personality too... though I suspect that's an act to help with the underestimating him/coping mechanism for all the trauma he has had.

And lol @ Sam's advice. Who knew it would come up so fast?]

Daniel just nodded slightly - both in recognition of Jack's request and Brod's reply. Mindful of his own observation about Sam being considered the leader, he glanced her way.

Mainly to reassure himself that he'd have someone backing him if Jack didn't like the diplomatic approach. Though it would also inadvertently reinforce the false assumption, and make it harder to explain.

----

Carter was somewhat relieved that the Colonel hadn't called her out on the lack of rank, or even the simple 'sir' in her last comment. Though that may have been due to Daniel's unintentional interference.

A slight smile did grace her lips at that thought. I think I'll be paying for it later though. She couldn't really explain why she hadn't used her usual deference however. She could only hope that O'Neill would overlook it and not consider it a sign of doom.

---

Daniel took Sam's smile to be the signal he needed, so he started his own information gathering. Disguised as an explanation of sorts.

"As explorers, we found that the name most used to describe us - our people - is 'Tau'ri'. Perhaps you're familiar with different terms?" Daniel then went through a couple of other terms for human - in the hopes of identifying a base language set for the native peoples.

----

Eretta didn't seem to be offended at their refusal to partake of the lembas bread. It wasn't to everyone's taste after all - she herself found it rather bland, but it served well as a fortifier.

To the question, she smiled and replied:

"You may ask. My name is Eretta, daughter of Rohan." Hopefully one day I'll be able to say shield-maiden rather than daughter.

She thought nothing of using the title - all Rohirrim were proud people of the plains, and to not claim it would be an insult.

She took a small piece of the lembas for herself. She left the rest unwrapped, on the off chance that minds would be changed.

"Are there many female warriors where your from?" She asked, curious as she already knew of many different attitudes to them on her own world. The Shield-Maiden of Rohan were respected, though there were doubts among those that hadn't seen them in battle.

Brod listened to the strange words that Daniel said, but could offer no other response but a small shake of his head as he said, “I cannot say that I have heard any of those terms but as I have said, I do not know the Elven words for the Race of Men.” Of course, there was also the Khuzdul term but none of the words Daniel had said were remotely similar – not that he would discuss them with any outsiders anyway. Daniel’s words did get Brod to wondering whether or not these strangers actually were of the Race of Men. True, they looked like Men but he couldn’t help but think of the legends that told of how the Valar could take on different appearances if they so chose… “Now, you are of the Race of Men, are you not?”

---

Alex was relieved that the young lady didn’t take offense and when she gave her name, he was taking mental notes to discuss with Daniel later. He found it interesting that while she used the ‘child of father’ wording like Brod had, the names didn’t really sound like they would’ve come from the same origin. Of course, just one female name and three male names weren’t really enough to form a concrete conclusion but it was something he was going to listen for. He was thinking about the possible implications when Eretta asked her question, and he found himself floundering for a moment as he tried to shift gears.

“Umm…,” he started uncertainly as he glanced toward Carter and O’Neill, for he simply didn’t know how to answer. Sure, there were a lot of women in the military but he wasn’t sure if people in the military would refer to themselves as warriors, or if it’d be more appropriate to call them soldiers, or if ‘soldiers’ were just from one branch of the military. Not wanting to risk putting the wrong label on anyone, he decided to skip over the whole ‘warrior’ thing and go for a somewhat generic answer. “Where we come from, if a woman has the ability and desire to do what was once considered to be man’s work, she may freely do so.” In theory, he added silently. “Likewise, if a man has the ability and desire to do what was once considered to be woman’s work, he will also be free to do so.”

[Heehee poor Daniel.... he tries so hard to avoid misconceptions and inadvertently creates them.

Oooo idea..... Carter can use Gou'uld devices and O'Neill has the Ancient gene..... what's the chances those 'traits' will reinforce the Valar impression?

Also let me know when you want to break camp - since this one is meant to be a short camp to maintain the groups stamina and lead on the Orcs.]

"I'd say we are of 'the Race of Men'. All bar Teal'c, who's a Jaffa, of course." Realising that may not help the initial impression they had of Teal'c, he added: "He is a very good friend."

---

Eretta considered the answer given by Alex, it answered her question, without really being specific.

Swallowing her lambas, she mused,

"Similar to our ways but not identical." Realising she'd spoken it loud enough for Alex and Teal'c to hear, Eretta clarified her statement.

"Among my people, women can do men's work if they are capable and wish to, but only men past their prime do the traditional work of women." Or those too injured in body or mind she mentally added.

----

While the two conversations were going on, Carter's injured arm was still bothering her.

In fact, the burning sensation that she'd put down to friction caused by movement had not gone away at all. Which she'd have expected to go away after a period of rest.

Part of her wanted to check up on her injury. But the rest of her didn't want to make a fuss over something that was just a scratch. A very painful and annoying scratch, but a scratch none the less.

[Ooo stubborn Carter.... that's going to bite you in the butt later......]

((I think that using Gou’uld devices would definitely reinforce the Valar impression, as you said. As for the Ancient gene thing, the only thing I know about it is that he has it so if you have ideas on how to make it work, then absolutely. smile.gif ))

Judging by Eretta’s response, it seemed to Alex that he hadn’t explained quite right and was almost tempted to try to explain how the lines between gender roles had been all but erased. However, he then realized that doing so might just cause confusion or worse, cause her to question her society. He wasn’t sure if there was some sort of ‘Prime Directive’ thing like in Star Trek, but he wasn’t about to risk it. Still, he found himself wanting to give at least a little clarification. “While it’s still a little uncommon for young men coming into adulthood to take on the once traditional women’s work, it’s rather common for women, like Major Carter there,” he pointed to Sam, “to take on the once traditional men’s work.”

---

Brod regarded Daniel and the others with slightly narrowed eyes as he said, “We shall see…” Realizing that getting to the bottom of the strangers’ story was going to take longer than they had, he shook his head as he said, “But, we can tarry here no longer.” He then looked back to Carter and gave a respectful nod as he said, “If you would please ready your people, we needs must keep on the move lest we be overtaken by Orcs.” He then started to turn away as he put his helm back on and shouted, “Make ready to move out!”

---

To say that Jack was frustrated with the lack of intel would have been an understatement and when it became apparent that Brod was saying that ‘talky-time’ was over, he was going to interject that they needed more information before they’d move again. However, before he could say anything, he was thrown for a loop when Brod asked Carter to get them ready instead of him. “Daniel…?” he started in an incredulous tone. “Carter…?” Pinching the bridge of his nose as he gave a frustrated sigh, he quietly said, “Why do I feel as though I’ve missed something important? Like, why don’t we have any more useful information, and why did he ask you to make us ready?”

---

When Brod shouted about leaving, Alex’s shoulders dropped a little as he gave a resigned sigh. However, realizing that he already hadn’t made a good impression during their march, he stood straight again and as he put his pack back on, he quoted, “Once more into the breach, I guess?”

((If you want, you can have Daniel stop Brod and ask more questions, or go ahead and have them break camp. Either way works equally for me.))

[heehee misconceptions are such fun things for SG-1 to resolve.

Finally named Eretta's mount - took me long enough lol.]

Eretta considered Alex's words but Brod's call to break camp interrupted any reply she would make.

Rewrapping the remaining lembas bread, to be placed back in her saddlebag, Eretta responded to Alex's quote:

"There are no walls to be breached - just a march to resume." Her hand still half in the saddlebag, she had another thought:

"If you wished to lighten the load of your pack, I'm sure Shadeheart would be glad to take some of the burden." Her free hand stroked the mane of her horse as she spoke, leaving little doubt as to who Shadeheart was.

----

Returning Brod's nod with one of her own, Carter turned to a rather confused O'Neill. Leaving Daniel to deal with the diplomatic side of things, as he was certainly better at it than she was, she debated what to say to her CO.

She settled for answering his questions as honestly as she could, she knew it was likely he wouldn't like the answers. Stepping closer to him, so her words wouldn't be overheard in the general sounds of camp-breaking.

"You're not the only one Colonel. But based on what little we do have I can make an educated guess. They've been fighting this 'Enemy' long enough that it seems unbelievable that anyone could not know about them." She met his eyes - amusement and a hint of nervousness readable in hers before her training shut out her feelings, then continued:

"As for why Brod asked me, he may have got the idea from somewhere that I'm in charge." A quick glance away, to check on Teal'c and Alex, then she returned her attention to O'Neill.

-----

Daniel could see the wisdom behind keeping the camp short, he had no wish to be caught in another firefight, but he also knew that Jack wouldn't be happy with the lack of information.

Deciding that being alive to ask questions later and face an irritated Jack than to ask them now and risk not being able to act on the answers was a better plan, Daniel looked to see Sam already in close conversation with Jack.

Not wanting to interrupt, he hurried back over to Teal'c and Alex, to see that they'd already heard the call and were getting ready. And by the looks of it they'd gained a local companion in the process too...

[Am going to assume that there's time for Alex to answer Eretta's offer and for Jack to react to Carter's answers/Daniels hasty retreat since large camps do take longer to break than if it was just them.]

When Eretta mentioned the lack of walls, Alex looked at her confused for a moment but then realized that she’d taken his comment literally. He considered explaining that it was just a figure of speech but decided that trying to explain what a figure of speech meant would have taken more time than they had. Though he let the matter drop, he did make a mental note to be more careful of using idioms and quips. At her offer to lighten his load, he was tempted to accept the offer – sorely tempted – but unfortunately, experience had taught him not to simply hand any of his gear over to probably curious natives. The tricky part then became how to decline without making it sound like trust was an issue. Hoping to make it sound like a matter of honor for him, he said “I do appreciate the offer, but it is my responsibility to bear.” At that point, Daniel returned and though they didn’t have time for a conversation, he felt it would be rude not to at least introduce them. Thus, he turned slightly so he was looking at both as he said, “Ah, Dr. Jackson,” he wasn’t intending to be formal in using titles, he simply spoke in the manner that was common between new colleagues, “this is Eretta daughter of Rohan. Eretta daughter of Rohan, this is Dr. Daniel Jackson.”

---

When Daniel quickly left, Jack watched his retreating back and though there was no malice behind it, he wryly thought, Coward. Daniel’s move left Jack feeling that he wasn’t going to like what Carter was going to say, and that feeling was confirmed as she answered his questions. “Oh for crying out loud. What part of ‘different planet’ didn’t they get? Don’t answer that…” Shaking his head, he looked over to Brod who appeared to be giving orders to a couple of the shorter soldiers. “And how are you and Daniel going to break it to them that you’re not in charge?” His tone didn’t hold any anger for he wasn’t bothered by it…Okay, he was a little annoyed with the natives for somehow coming to that conclusion, but he didn’t hold that against Carter. The main reason he wanted that cleared up was because he needed to know that things went bad, like they always seemed to, the natives would look to him to find out what his unit would do.

Trusting that Carter would do what was necessary when the opportunity presented itself, he left it at that and once again looked at the company they found themselves in. Though he was on the alert for any threats from any of them, the humans he had what he felt was a good feel for them. Unfortunately, the shorter people – whatever they were – were a different matter. With all their faces hidden behind masks, it was impossible to gauge what they might be thinking and the fact that he couldn’t read these people left him feeling a little uneasy. At least he was familiar enough with the Jaffa that that even with their mask things, he always had a pretty good idea of what they were going to do.

---

As Brod was giving orders, he briefly glanced toward the strangers and then the non-mounted Men and then gave a small shake of his head as he added an order that they were going to slow their pace to accommodate them. He wasn’t entirely happy about that necessity, but he knew that the Race of Men simply wouldn’t have been able to keep up the previous pace. Once the Dwarves he’d been talking to left relay the orders, Brod could only wait for everyone to be ready to move out, and hope that they’d be able to make good distance before having to camp for the night.

Carter had already guessed that the first part of his response was hypothetical, but she still seemed to have a compulsion to answer it - at least til he added not to.

Though she could still answer the second one.

"Considering that it's most likely Daniel's fault - I was going to let him clear things up after himself." Then she wryly added, "At least its a change from being considered inferior."

Most of the cultures they'd encountered, either ignored her completely, tolerated her presence due to the rest of the team or on a very early mission, treated her as property to be traded - thanks to Daniel's insistence that they follow and respect the Shavadai culture. That was not pleasant. She could have lived with just the dress - not liked it, but it wasn't that bad.

---

At the introductions, Eretta inclined her head, and greeted Daniel with:

"Dr Jackson, hopefully the journey's pace didn't cause too much trouble."

---

Daniel nodded at Eretta as he was introduced, his mind already on the similarity of the name-giving.

"Pleased to meet you." He honestly stated, then added: "The pace was necessary to avoid further conflict, that would have been more trouble than the journey." Though it could have been better.... I hope Jack's knee is ok and that this next pace is easier...

[Couldn't resist the episode reference in Carter's part... and O'Neill will know she's not making a jab at him/his treatment of her with her reply. Though he may make a joke about that blue dress... he did seem to like it....]

Jack gave a ‘fair enough’ nod when Carter mentioned that Daniel would have to clean up his own mess. However, the last part of her comment had him thinking back on some of their missions and he couldn’t help but think of one in particular as he said, “True… but I still say that dress was you.” He then looked around to see where Daniel went and noticing him and Alex talking to the young woman from earlier he added, “We better get over there before he digs himself even deeper.”

---

As Alex listened to Eretta and Daniel, he thought of having to continue at that same pace and could already feel his legs burning.

[i'll try to keep the shippyness to a minimum.... though the recent SG-1 reruns aren't helping my imagination. Especially the episodes that feature a Jack/Sam moment. *cough*Window of Opportunity*cough*]

Carter didn't really know how to react to the fact that O'Neill seemed to like that dress. Or maybe its really me? And not the dress that he likes? Thankfully she didn't need to answer that as she caught the direction his eyes were going.

Towards Daniel. Their resident well-meaning diplomat and unintentional trouble magnet.

Carter smiled at her thoughts, and started walking towards Daniel.

"Right. We already have enough misconception to go round."

She paused mid-step, "Who's turn is it to pull him out of the fire? Mine or yours, sir?"

She hadn't lost track, technically it was always the turn - the responsibility - of the team leader to restrain Daniel's enthusiasm. Carter just wanted to be sure how far O'Neill would be willing to take the pretence - should it really be a problem. Like if they ran into an Amazon-style culture.

((I really liked that episode, and that particular scene was simply perfect. xd.png ))

Walking over to the others, Jack was silently congratulating himself for managing to throw out a smart-aleck comment at Carter’s expense without outright angering or offending her. However, he paused when Carter did and at her question, he simply raised a brow as he still quietly said, “I’d say the new guy but since he’s another egghead, he’d probably just add fuel to the fire.” With a small shake of his head, he continued walking, and once he reached the others he asked, “Daniel?”

---

With everything on the Free Peoples’ side ready, Brod approached the Tau'ri, as they called themselves. “All is in order,” he said, “so if you are ready, we will move out.”

((Not meaning to rush us along, but I tent to get easily distracted from such plans. If you want to continue their current conversation, feel free to have someone ask for a little more time.))

[That scene was them. I like the fact he still followed the rules by resigning before kissing her. Wonder how many loops it took for him to plan that one?

And no worries on the prodding.]

With a small grin, Carter followed O'Neill. She knew he didn't mean anything by the egghead comment. After all, he did often turn to the 'eggheads' for a solution when things went FUBAR.

---

At Jack's questioning greeting, Daniel was only able make his usual reply of "Jack" before Brod rejoined them with his announcement.

---

Carter took one assessing glance around, making sure everything and everyone was in order. Perhaps now was a good time as any to start correcting the misconceptions, so ending her sweep on O'Neill, she silently asked him to go ahead and make the call.

[How easy would that be to misconstrue as her ordering him? tongue.gif Or maybe she can communicate without words - so she must be Valar?]

When Brod came up to them, Jack took a look around like Carter did and he ended looking to her at the same time that she looked to him. Understanding the look she gave him, he agreed that it would be a good way to try to set things right, he turned to Brod and said, “We’re good here, after you.”

---

Watching the strangers, Brod was rather confused by several things. First by the fact that tough no words were spoken nor gestures given, the two had seemed to somehow communicate; then by the fact that one of the warriors answered instead of their leader; and finally by the words that the warrior said. Though his mask concealed his confusion, he knew that it most likely showed in his eyes. Still, he said nothing as he tucked the matter away as something to think about during the march, and turning away he gave an Iglishmêk gesture as he shouted, “Move out!”

---

Though he had seen everything, Alex couldn’t help but feel that he missed something and he could understand why Brod seemed confused as well. As they started walking, he looked at Daniel with a baffled expression and asked, “What just happened?”

((In case you’re not familiar with the word, Iglishmêk is Dwarven sign language.))

At Alex's question, Daniel could only reply:

"You've just seen why those two are the most annoying non-couple in the galaxy."

With a roll of his eyes, he explained: "They have this uncanny knack for non-verbal communication. If you asked either of them about it, they'd say it was due to working together for as long as they have."

"I've been working with them for the same length of time - and I still don't know how they do it or even understand it most of the time."

---

Carter didn't see the eye-roll, but she heard the slight grumble of complaint in Daniel's last statement. Guess we found one language-system that stumps Daniel. Glancing sideways at O'Neill, she wondered if he too saw the humour in that, or whether he was fixating on the first comment.

She'd long stopped correcting Daniel on his couple comments, though she did wonder if he was aware of the rumours that went around the base on a daily basis because of the good-natured teasing on that matter.

[There's bound to be rumours about Jack/Sam, whether true or not. Military base gossip would love to focus on a scandal in the upper ranks/ flagship team tongue.gif]

At Daniel’s answer, Alex could only raise a brow as he said, “I see?” He figured there had to have been something there that he just missed, so he silently decided to keep a close eye on how they communicated. He just knew that the key had to be there somewhere.

---

For the most part, Jack was amused by Alex and Daniel’s confusion, but he was also annoyed with Daniel’s couple crack. Though he didn’t say anything about it, he was silently plotting how best to get Daniel back for it.

((Guess I’ve never given much thought to any rumors about them. However, going back to the ‘Window of Opportunity’ scene, I have wondered if Teal’c was aware of the kiss and if so, what did he think about it? …and would he have kept it from Sam? xd.png

Also, sorry that there’s not much to work with here unsure.gif ))

[i've always had the suspicion that Sam knows about the things Jack got up to during the loops. I'd imagine Teal'c - if he knew - would secretly approve, but remain silent over it not to cause trouble for his friends.

Technically Jack can employ the perfect excuse: It's Spacemonkey's (Daniel's) fault, after all Daniel was the one who pointed out the 'no consequences' thing of the loop....]

Carter, though she'd never admit to it, actually enjoyed the somewhat mischievous nature that her CO displayed on occasion. Of course, it was irritating to be caught in the proverbial crossfire.

No doubt, based on O'Neill's silent reaction, he was already plotting revenge on the unsuspecting Daniel. As such, she took a small amount of pity on him and some amusement in saying over her shoulder:

"Its a military trick, Daniel. Don't worry, you'll pick it up - eventually."

---

Daniel practically glared at Carter's back at that comment. The military vs civilian thing was his and Jack's territory, she was meant to be the neutral party, seeing she was a scientist as well as an officer.

Then he muttered:

"You've got to stop spending so much time with Jack. His sarcasm is starting to rub off on you."

Though he couldn't see it, Carter only grinned in response to that.

((Sorry it took so long to reply. I was feeling a little under the weather. Also, sorry but I’m going to be net-less from 8/2 until 8/9. ))

Listening to Carter and Daniel, it seemed to Alex that there was probably some sort of inside joke that he wasn’t familiar with, so he could only give a small, “Ah, I...see?”

---

Without turning back, Jack smirked at Carter’s ‘military trick’ remark. However, at Daniel’s comment about sarcasm, he did turn to walk backwards for a couple steps and with an innocent expression he said, “You say that like it’s a bad thing.” Turning forward again, he noticed Brod watching them and he cleared his throat as his expression turned serious again. Still don’t like the masks, he thought as he wondered what Brod was thinking… or planning.

---

The exchange among the Tau’ri had Brod thoroughly baffled and he found himself watching them as he tried to piece together what it all meant. Realizing that O’Neill had noticed him watching, he gave a small nod as he also turned to look forward again.

[Hope you're feeling better - and no worries, I'll do a cut scene or two during the net-less days, just to make things interesting.... after all the Orcs that ran off must be doing something lol.

And why do I think that SG-1 is having fun confusing the newbie?]

Daniel could only roll his eyes at Jack's innocent act. But as it seemed that Jack was going to drop the subject, Daniel managed to hold back the reply that was on the tip of his tongue, at least for now.

Carter wasn't fooled. She knew from experience it was only a temporary truce, the question was who'd break it first. Though on occasion she did wonder how she put up with the pair..... keeping an eye on the surroundings was a much better idea.

Eretta was just as confused as Brod, though she could guess it was similar to the camaraderie shared among the Riders during the slow periods of a watch. The topics however, were not the same.
