The XBoned is really just... Such a screwup of a system.

Used game issues to rape jokes in their conference... Everything is going south for them on this one.

I see what you did there.

But in all seriousness, Microsoft dropped the ball like it was on fire.

I'd be more inclined to take them seriously on the console gaming front if they didn't do shady things like setting up the Kinect to always be on and listening/watching people for the sake of targeted marketing, making point to keep backwards compatibility off their console to force people to keep their 360s, or bribing companies to not showcase PS4 titles at E3 so the Xbox One looks more appealing.

Then again, Microsoft is known more for their programming knowledge rather than their gaming hardware proficiency. The original Xbox was not designed for hardcore gaming (consoles literally melting because not enough cooling!) and the 360 was mostly known for the Red Ring rates. And Call of Duty, but if the connection issues my WoW guild was having last time they released a CoD game were any indication, I don't think the Internet can take that many 13-year olds calling each other names.

Pushing "TV!!!!!!" as a major selling point for the Xbox One? I already have a cable box, thanks.

On a much less serious note, if I ever live on my own and manage to obtain such a console, I will be playing it with a printout of either an ugly porn star or a butt mounted in front of the Kinect camera for maximum giggles because I have the maturity of a small child.

Considering all the anti-consumer friendly components they've implemented, I'm fairly certain it's going to crash and burn. Especially compared to the PS4, which has one-upped (ehehehe) everything on the new xbox.

The only thing I lament is that Xbox One gets Witcher 3, which actually looks pretty rad.

Well I for welcome our new xbox overlords.

But seriously, I've read up on this, and listened to the opinions of several people. It seems to me like Microsoft is banking hard on two ideas.

One is the Kinect. Seriously, its a dancing accessory, no matter how you try and spin it. People didn't like it and nobody will grow to like it if you force it into your system and always have it on.

Two, they're relining on the game publishers for good exclusives. Think about it, why would they make such a dogmatic system that's extremely anti-consumer? In this day and age digital pirating is prevalent, and its causing publishers to have a minor panic. Things like always-online DRM were created because of piracy. This console is an olive branch to the publishers, in the hopes that consumers will buy the console because of what games its gonna get.

Either way, its gonna fail hard. In order to beat piracy you need to offer a better service then the pirates. This is only gonna force people away from the xbox one.

Unless Microsoft have something up their sleeves, or fall back hard, the PS4 is gonna be the dominate console of this generation.

It's a term a friend started using, it's just something I think perfectly describes it. xd.png

I can understand from a cost perspective the no BC thing--it's cheaper and lowers the final cost of the system if you leave it out. I hate it, but at least I can understand WHY.

But seriously--an all-in-one that does... Everything I don't care about. I want a GAMING console, I don't watch TV. Besides, you need a cable box for that anyway, so if you have it... What's the point?

Personally, if I ever ended up with one I'd just game naked. Overweight naked person? Yeah, that's real attractive. xd.png

The always online thing is not about piracy. It's about buying into the digital distribution model. Discs for the Xbox One are just a means of distributing the bits and selling the licenses. It's about not having to swap discs to switch games, enabling the fast app switching features they're pushing. The Xbox One is Steam without requiring a wide pipe to the internet for distribution, and with allowing you to resell games you purchased and played.

I'm not sure that's going to be enough of a value proposition to compensate for the fact that console gamers are losing some of their flexibility, but this isn't just "teeheehee, let's kill used games".

I'd pretty much think I'd do the same haha. I sort of just died thinking about it. *revives myself*

The only thing that would propel me to purchase an Xbox One would be a console-exclusive game. I'm completely against the game-code-lock thing and the always-on camera, but if Beyond Good and Evil 2 was released for just that system (and I'm praying such a thing doesn't happen!), I would drop the funds for it!

It's so funny, how they're marketing to general entertainment usage, when the only sort of thing that could save them at this point would be an exclusive title.

Actually, the next system I want to buy? A Super Nintendo. With all my old favorites. Ah, the good ol' days.... xd.png

The thing about Steam is that, according to the terms and services, I do not own the game I buy using its digital distribution. I'm merely paying for the right to use the game's license for my entertainment, to more or less paraphrase it. With the Xbox one, I would be paying for a physical copy, which is for all rights and purposes mine. If the game is bad, I'm free to break the disc with a heavy hammer. Its mine to use as I see fit.

If I wanted to give it to a friend for a song, its my choice. Why should he or she have to pay about 70 to 80% of the retail price just so he or she can play it on their own console?

But seriously--an all-in-one that does...  Everything I don't care about.

They're playing Monkey See Monkey Do with the all-in-one model, copying Sony because it worked for them. Thing is, the Blu-Ray capability on the PS3 was Sony's fallback in case the console flopped on the gaming front because it was the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market at launch. Similarly, the PSP (in every iteration) as a portable media device in case the games turned out to be crap, because Sony doesn't like to hold its own gaming franchises and lets the third party developers make the exclusives. And since PS3 games cost an arm and a leg, that model made some sense. But with no well-timed new medium coming out this time around, Microsoft is mimicking the model while ignoring the reasons. The name of the game nowadays is to have your console stand proud on its own, because exclusivity isn't going to prop you up anymore. With the chipsets of the next generation being so similar to most PC configurations, cross-platform is going to be the path of least resistance (and maximized profit) for developers. Sony learned last generation that relying too heavily on exclusivity is going to hurt a whole lot. Microsoft benefited from that error, but as a result they have yet to learn that lesson.

Back to the TV bit... you buy a gaming console to play games on a TV. And if you have a TV chances are you use it to watch TV at times when you're not playing games on it. And if you're watching TV with your TV chances are you have a cable box or satellite provider or something so you can watch something other than Fox News. So what the heck were they thinking making the Xbox provide people with a service that they're extremely likely to already have? And more expensive, at that? ><

Not to mention the PS4 is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One. So I can either buy an Xbox One, or I can get a PS4 and a game I can lend to my friend, along with lunch with said friend for that same amount!

I'm hoping to buy a PS4 at some point, although it might take me a while (I'm usually late when buying new consoles). Normally when I get a games console some of the games I want for it aren't for sale any more, meaning I have to buy a (sometimes very expensive) second hand copy.

If I had to pay again for every second hand game I owned, I'd be screwed.

Sony and Nintendo can have all my money.

I doubt even an exclusive X-One game could convince me to buy the system.

One thing confuses me about the Xbox One. They say you need to register your games every 24 hours or you'll be locked out of them. What if you decide you don't want to play on your Xbox for a day or two? Some people only have time to play games at the weekend for example.

I've heard the same, or something like if you don't play for 24 hours you won't be able to access xbox live.

Give it about a week or so, and I bet some pirates will crack it.

Here's my understanding:

If you want to play your games, you need to connect the console to the Internet once every 24 hours. So, if you don't play your games for a few days you need to connect to the 'net. If you play your games for 24 hours straight, you'll need to connect to the 'net.

Also, if you're playing at a friend's, you'll have to connect once an hour. :/

It's not that you won't be able to access live--that would be stupid, even for MS. They WANT you to connect to the 'net, and you can't access Live without the 'net so that wouldn't work.

Nope. I don't get it.

What if your power goes out for a few days? Or you go on holiday? Or to the hospital? What if you just plain forget? What if you sleep in and miss the deadline?

Clearly you've put a lot more thought into it than they did... I can't see the logic or reasoning behind it either: it baffles, worries and amuses me in equal measure.

You will instantly regain access to your offline games once you re-connect.

You won't be able to forget, I bet--it'll prompt you to connect and refuse to let you play a game until you connect.

You won't actually lose anything--you just won't be able to access your games until you connect it to the internet.

If, however, there is a multi-day (or even just over 24 hours) internet outage in your area... You're censorkip.gif ed. Or if you don't have internet, or for some reason can't connect the system to the internet. That's the only time you'll be screwed outta using your games.

But if you're on holiday, or in the hospital or have no electricity, that won't matter, will it? Since you won't be playing the system anyway.

My take on it is, while they claim it's to check for updates, it's actually just a rather stupid anti-piracy measure.

I'm pretty sure they already said that all disc-based games were going to be available on digital download as well.

All I can say is that if you think that Microsoft has made a technical mistake which is truly, incredibly stupid, and completely unforgivable, you are probably not interpreting the information correctly.

Companies are amoral and short-sighted, they are not evil and stupid. There is a big difference between these two characterizations.

The unforgivable thing is the casual joking about rape.

That aside, as somebody who works in a game store I can already tell you that family gamers are pissed off about how MS has explained the pre-owned stuff. And that a fair chunk of gamers trade in games to fund new games, so if publishers don't make a deal with their preferred retailer then they're screwed.

That seems pretty dang stupid to me.
