Posted April 21, 2013 (edited) Chitin (C8H13O5N)n (pron.: /ˈkaɪtɨn/ ky-tin) is a long-chain polymer of a N-acetylglucosamine, a derivative of glucose, and is found in many places throughout the natural world. It is the main component of the cell walls of fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods such as crustaceans (e.g., crabs, lobsters and shrimps) and insects, the radulas of mollusks, and the beaks and internal shells of cephalopods, including squid and octopuses. In terms of structure, chitin may be compared to the polysaccharide cellulose and, in terms of function, to the protein keratin. Chitin has also proven useful for several medical and industrial purposes. Yes, the theme is chitin. ... Entries accepted until May 5th. Posted April 22, 2013 (edited) I was confused at first, since I've never heard of Chitin, lol. This is a pretty interesting theme My entry, a butterfly I saw in a flowerbed as I was leaving King's Dominion. My dad and I couldn't help but take some pictures. While his were better, I'm still pretty proud of this one, the best of the butterfly that I managed to take Edited April 23, 2013 by PieMaster Share this post Link to post

Posted April 24, 2013 I actually have multiple stages of this particular metamorphosis, but I find this early stage, when the caterpillar is preparing to go into it's last molt to become a chrysalis the most fascinating. Gulf Fritillary - Preparing to Pupate Share this post Link to post
Posted April 25, 2013 Don't bug me... This beautiful cicada was sitting on one of my husband's corn plants about a year ago, minding its own business. It sat there for a good couple hours before it left for parts unknown. I'd never seen one that still. Most of the ones I've seen have been flailing in my cat's mouth. Share this post Link to post

Posted April 26, 2013 It's okay, Lagie. When I first saw her theme, I read it as "chitlin." Couldn't figure out why she'd want pictures of fried pork guts, but thought maybe she was just really hungry when she thought up a theme. For those who don't know what they are...
