"They'll learn," Kez needlessly assured Logan. Some of them already had; Kez wasn't the only student who'd come from a tough start to their new life. He was positively lucky in some regards, given he'd not taken a life or witness death until after he joined the Mansion and had had some training. There were some students so powerful that they had already been the cause of events as horrific as any Kez had seen, yet so young. The young man knew better than to debate with Logan on a topic such as this, especially when Logan was being himself. While he agreed the children would learn, they were still just that; children. A ten-year-old shouldn't ever know the horror of a war; twelve-year-olds shouldn't struggle with life and death. Maybe it was because he was a product of the safety-conscious twenty-first century, where children were not even given the chance to become adults until their late teens, but he felt that most of the student body should have the time to learn before they get exposed to the harshness of reality. It was in part why he had stayed behind - to protect the younger ones.

Stepping out of the Mansion's main door Kez enjoyed the feel of the air on his human skin, taking a deep breath. While his claustrophobia was more for very tight, enclosed spaces he did find himself more relaxed with open air around him, rather than the staid, stuffy air of even the most well-ventilated buildings.

Unlike Nicolas and the female mutant Helios had little to no combat experience. He couldn't throw a punch for all the tea in China and his mutant abilities weren't exactly ideal. It was impossible for Helios to guage between a small debilitating cut and a killing blow, and he couldn't let that happen.

Helios attention was distracted when something hit the barrier Nicolas had erected around the two of them. He instantly knew what it had been. A bullet. Someone had tried to shoot him.

No! thought Helios. There are too many people here. We have to leave.

The female mutant grabbed a nearby car, set it on fire and picked it up, obviously using her powers to do so. The sight of the burning car caused further panic in the humans. At first Helios feared she was going to throw it at the crowd but she instead tossed it at a plane instead. It fell short of it's target and set fire to parts of the street in front of the school.

With the fires, the roar of the crowd and the tannoy blaring Helios felt overwhelmed. All he had wanted to do was see what Kelly was saying about his kind, what his arguements were, his reasons. How could it have all gone wrong so quickly?

He pulled his hood back and turned to face the crowd of humans. With fraught mutants, gunmen and what looked horribly like some kind of battlesuit stomping down the street towards them Helios' first thought was to reduce the number of potential casualties. He half turned towards them and raised his right arm, his brace visible where it curled around his hand and fingers. As one the human crowd drew back and group together instantly afraid of the young and weak boy in front of them. That actually made it easier for what he was about to do.

"Nicolas please extend your barrier around our boisterous friend."

Helios closed his eyes and concentrated. It was easier if he let the brace do the 'seeing'. As he had built it himself he trusted it far more than his own eyes, and he needed to be careful.

By the time the humans had realised what he was doing it was too late for any of them to do anything about it. The crowd found themselves being pushed back, gently but firmly. Helios' face screwed up with effort as he forced them all back through the doors to the school. They struggled and cried out, but they could no more fight Helios' telekinisis than they could the force of gravity. When the very last person was inside and out of harms way Helios slammed the double doors shut and grabbed a nearby car. He was so caught up in placing it carefully in front of the school doors to prevent anyone from running out again that he almost didn't hear the second shot.

Helios turned around and saw the blood. His face twisted into one of anguish. Would the next shot kill her? This wasn't what he wanted.

"Nicolas save her!"

((I'm just going to assume that Forge was slightly too far away for Nicolas to get the barrier around her before the shot to the shoulder.))

((Good notion biggrin.gif. Guess I better let her take a few steps back then, though.))

Apparently whatever shielded Helios did nothing to protect the woman. She let the burning car fall, held her shoulder and covered behind the vehicile.

Now Geso might owe her, but not enough to let her escape.

With a push of a button one of his two harken speed out and buried itself in the door of the burning car.

Geso pulled it toward him most of the way, then removed the harken from the frame, so it fell on the street. Finally he let the knighmare frame take a big step over the car.

Obstacle removed.

The needle blazers lifted from his elbows and he aimed them both at the woman.

The mutant, who suddenly looked very small and helpless, stumbled a few feet backwards.

The sensor camera locked on her face. As he had promised it would be quick.

Geso pushed another button and the blazers fired.

---

Rolo removed a kevlar vest from one of the operatives and after a moment of hesitation one of the helmets too. He was standing in a kitchen, so it was easy to find a towel with which he removed most of the mess in the helmet - but it would still smell and taste horribly. And he wouldn't be able to fool anyone, given that he was still wearing his school uniform.

But the dark glass of the visor hid his face while it allowed him to look outside without much problem. Nifty that. He'd have to ask magneto if he could fashion helmets like these for them too.

The stairs behind him sqeaked.

Rolo whirled around and saw a girl of approximately 17 years on the stairs. She looked frigthend to death. Rolo concluded that she must have been upstairs and too frightend to come down after Forge and he had broken in. Wise girl.

But now the silence had seduced her into coming down.

"Please." she begged. "Just let me go."

Rolo gave a tiny nod. Then asked as an afterthought.

"Anyone else up there?"

"N... no. My parents are away in the opera."

"Lucky them. Take this way."

Rolo pointed to the door whose lock Forge had molten. The one that would hopefully lead the girl out of the combat zone instead of into it.

The girl didn't move. Stood at the stairs frozen.

Rolo saw two new operatives approach the house. How many of them were there?

"Run!" he shouted at the girl. "Things are about to get lively again."

She ran away as if her life depended on it. Which to be fair it might do. If Rolo was smart he'd run after her.

Instead he grabbed two bags of flour and moved to the door on the other side.

Wolverine stood there in simple silence for a couple of moments. Sometimes he appreciated a quiet minute or two amongst the madness of the academy. Away from the children and the reports and the X-Men. And then his head snapped toward the more grassy areas as he picked up the sound of soft scuffling. Probably an animal of some kind trespassing the large property. It was with this that he began to walk on, making his way toward the same direction in which he had heard the sound. He expected Kez to follow. It didn't matter if he didn't. Solitude was the norm for Logan. He usually preferred being alone anyway; people never seemed to fare well around him and he wasn't the most cheerful of folks.

Nicolas quickly followed the orders of Helios creating a second invisible barrier over the woman after she was shot. Luckily she was close enough for him to do so but now he would have to take a bit of action. More people where getting hurt, human and mutants a like, he either have to get Helios out of here first or step in and try to stop it.

With his decision made he step from behind Helios, still with barriers in place, and started forming electrical whips from his hands. With a swift movement he whipped the electrical whip, sending an almost thundering sound through the area. It was only to draw attention away from the women and from other that might be in harms way.

((Works perfect. Though I believe now is the moment to explain a bit more about this power. ))

The energy blasts shot out from the knighmare frame and ... barely five centimetres before they would have reached their target... connected with Nicks second force field and were reflected into the ground, leaving dark smudges on the pavement.

When he realized the woman was protocted too now Geso balled his fists but resumed walking. He did not know the nature of this barrier, but they all had their weaknesses. If it could stop something like the blazers, an attack that was mostly energy, his best bet was that it was the kind of forcefield that was designed to stop attacks. In which case he'd be able to march his knightmare frame right into it. And once he was there ...

On the other hand if it simply stopped everything, it would also stop oxigen and that meant the people in it lived on borrowed time.

The third man, the one with the piercing blue eyes, suddenly manifested some kind of glowing whip and cracked it like a lion tamer in the circus.

Geso nodded satisfied as he received proof that this man was a mutant too. It had been likely given how close he had hung to Helios, but it was always better to have confirmation.

"Three for the price of one." he murmured.

---

Rolo threw the door open, but instead of running out he stayed left to it, only throwing the bag of flour outside.

The two operatives instinctively shot the moving target and the flour filled the air and stuck to their visors, shilding Rolo for a few moments from sight.

Rolo darted out of the door and hid behind the rubbish containers which were not in the direction of the school but the other direction.

He was a bit surprised, when after wiping the flour from their visors the two operatives continued into the house, instead of keeping searching for him.

Of course Rolo hadn't noticed the lash of the energy whip which had provided an added distraction in that moment, nor was he aware that the two operatives expected to be up against a teleporter who would have had no need for a flour cover to escape.

Save behind the cover of the rubbish containers Rolo studied the street and noticed that with the exception of the two in the house most operatives seemed to be drawn to the entrance of the school. And the three mutants in front of it.

The doors of the school were closed now, the crowd that had watched before probably inside.

((This post is happening later than I had hoped. I had to run home and locate my dog. Silly thing crawled under the hedge again.))

The robot's attack bounced harmlessly off Nicolas' barrier around the female mutant, Helios gave a sigh of relief and closed his eyes. He wasn't really one for religion, having been somewhat confused by it even before he was kicked out onto the streets, but right now he wondered if someone somewhere was looking out for them. If Nicolas' barrier had been erected just a second later...

The large robot was now advancing towards the three mutants. Helios' eyes narrowed and he felt an ususal surge of disgust. These people had declared that Nicolas, the girl and himself who was dangerous, yet they were the ones who had brought guns and a robot to a residental area. This was a school, surrounded by the homes of families. They had to be stopped.

"Nicolas" he said without looking at his friend. "Let me out of the barrier. I need to shut that thing down."

It wasn't often that Helios acted like the leader he was and actually gave out orders, in fact most of his followers treated his requests like suggestions, but they all knew when they had to obey without question. Now was such a time.

Nicolas was advancing slowly towards the robot, still with is electrical whips in hand. He was about to act when he heard Helios’ words to release him from the safety of the barrier. Turning around slightly he looked at the young man making sure what he heard was right. He was that Helios was acting more serious than usual. Smiling Nicolas lowered his barrier around him allowing him to be free and do what he wanted to. Nicolas kept a close eye on him in case someone tried to attack.

The moment the barrier protecting him was down Helios ran forward. He needed to be out of the way so that Nicolas could raise it back around himself if. Helios wouldn't let his friend put himself in danger, not for his sake.

The moment he was clear from the other two mutants Helios jumped and as his telekinisis took hold began to rise away from the floor and forward at speed. He had to stay ahead of the robot's targeting systems, or he would be shot down.

As it was a couple of agents spotted him and tried to fire, but Helios twirled in mid air and dodged both bullets. In only a few seconds he was practially on top of the robot and he rocketed between its legs. Turning around he rose further up and then grabbed hold of the back of its waist. Using his telekinisis he ripped away a panel of metal, exposing the circuits underneath.

Smiling for the first time that day Helios reached in and began to yank out several key connections. He would have to leave the gunmen to Nicolas, but at least he could take this thing out of the fight.

((If the robot starts staggering around due to its systems shutting down, can you please make it so that it doesn't give anyone a clear shot at Helios? He won't be as pretty with a bullet hole in the head o3o))

ON:

The moment the fleeing crowd was met with invisible resistance Elizabeth was quick to dart around the side of the building and out of the way before the unseen force caught her as well; whoever was exerting that power was going to cause far too much harm. As she moved around the side of the school she could hear the screams rising in pitch and volume, more voices calling out in anger and fear and pain as far too many people were packed into far too small as pace. Those who had tripped or been pushed over were undoubtedly crushed, family groups would be separated perhaps never to be brought together again, and when the emergency services finally arrived there would be a lot of bodies to sort through.

Elizabeth was alive though, and that was what mattered.

Moving around the building she stopped short of the muzzle of a rifle, and she didn't have to act surprised - merely let it show for a change. Another uniformed man with a long-barreled rifle was peering down his scope as he led on the ground, a low and difficult target for anyone at a distance from the man. He looked up, equally surprised to see Elizabeth appear, and smoothly pushed the barrel of the weapon so that it was pointing away from her, to the concrete wall of the building. It was a well-chosen location for a sniper, with the eaves of the roof preventing anyone from above seeing him, and the bulk of the school building protecting him from the left and behind and a thicket of bushes blocking any view from the residential area to his left. None of his targets could see more than perhaps a glint of the muzzle and even then only if they were looking for him, close by. It was an excellent impromptu cover, and he didn't seem to appreciate Elizabeth's blundering into his line of sight.

"Ma'am, please move." It was not an overly-kind voice, one that was willing to forgive her trespass but had no real concern for her safety. He was, however, aiming his rifle at the crowd of bodies and attempting to get a clear line on the mutants. Elizabeth did exactly as she was asked; she mumbled an apology in a shaky voice and scooted past the soldier, who kept his eyes front and made to find his target once more. Sadly, he was already Quickstep's next target.

In a movement too fast for a human eye to follow Elizabeth reached behind her back and took the handle of one knife, pulled it out, spun, and plunged it firmly into the exposed flesh between helmet and jacket, a fine target that only a superior blade-smith would normally have been able to identify and potentially succeed. However Elizabeth had far more time than the normal combatant to pick her target, and with the deadliness of an assassin she plunged the knife through the man's neck and spinal column.

Letting time flow around her once more, Elizabeth hunkered down to wipe the blade clean on the trousers of the corpse before sheathing the now-clean weapon in her backpack. He had indeed chosen the perfect location, and it was also his undoing. Never one to remain at the scene of a crime for long Elizabeth broke into a sprint, keeping to the edge of the building until she came across an unopened fire exit. She hoped to slip in through the building and exit from another angle before the trapped civilians realised that there was more than one door in the school.

((I'll put a spin on things. But you don't need to worry about him. Though a hole in the head would certainly make a great conversation starter.))

"Geso, mind telling me what you and your boys and girls are doing there?" Geso kringed. He was sure the mutants were up to something now, but one did not say no to Senator Kelly. Though really, that communication couldn't have come at a worse time.

"Fullfilling the mission, Senator."

"Creating an utter mess, that is what you are doing. Did I or did I not made it completly clear how important discretion was in this matter?"

"You'll not be implicated."

"You ..."

In that moment Helios started running and leaped into the air.

"One moment Senator." Geso interruped Kelly with a certain relief. "I have a situation here."

---

Rolo did not hesitate long. Reaching for his second power he lifted himself into the air and flew toward the combatants, the very moment Helios lifted himself into the air too. Rolo kept himself very close to the roofs. He figured whoever was sitting in the plane might be less likely to notice him this way. He could have run too, but his body was exhausted and flying was faster anyway.

---

"Operative 74" prepare the team to disengage the moment Operative 24 has finished the mutant Helios. Or the second the young idiot is smashed by him. At the moment I am not quite sure what I'd prefer. Serves me right for giving command to a teenager." the voice of the senator was utterly disgusted.

"Yes, Senator." 74 said, not just aknowledging the command but completly agreeing with the sentiment.

She quickly gave a few commands to the other operatives and those nearest their fallen collegues (while she had been talking to the senator yet another operatives signal had turned from green to red) went to collect them and started preparing for boarding the plane again.

Meanwhile the pilot brought the plane down

---

It was hard to imagine, but Helios had the gall to fly straight at him. He might have managed to target him, but he had been distracted by the senator. Some of the snipers shot at him, but Helios managed to evade.

Then the mutant landed at the back of the knighmares waist, opened the panel and started pulling out kables. He'd find out quickly how pointless this was. If not removed in a certain sequence important energy flows would just reroute.

With a growl Geso let the Robot reach toward his back to pull out his MVS (maser vibration sword - lance type), intending to spit the vermin on it's typ.

Suddenly the Knighmare shuddered. The hand stopped moving.

Geso started pushing buttons desperately but all that happend was that the robot stopped moving too and fell over.

The head opened, seemingly of it's own accord and Geso fell out of it.

---

Operative 212 stopped fireing after Helios had landed on the knightmare. He didn't want to explain to their irrate leader why he had shot his beloved robot.

74 sent the order to prepare to withdraw, but 212 did not want to leave without downing at least one mutant.

Helios was out of reach right now and the girl who could cook humans alive in an instant was bit too dangerous, but he doubted that the one with the energy whip had any true skills.

Figuring that the riffle wouldn't help him, because of that darned shield, he drew an energy lance and charged his opponent, feeling like an old style medival knight.

Logan broke into a trot, posture slightly leaned forward as he went along. His ears would have been pricked had he been an animal, and his nose twitched as he caught the scent of rabbit, trees, grass, hints of human carried along by the wind. The strongest was the rabbit. That must be what was making the soft sounds on the ground. He could feel his muscles and joints loosening, warming as he did the easy exercise, heart picking up its beat ever so discreetly. Due to being extremely fit, his heart rate did not often hammer away in his chest. And neither did he pant like a dog after a couple of kilometres of running. He suddenly stopped as the wind changed direction, head snapping in another direction before going back to normal again. He could hear them. Still a little further. "Rabbit," he murmured to himself, and to Kez if he had kept up. "I'd say around three... How about a hunt...?"

Nicolas smiled at Helios success as he saw the operative of the robot fell out. Now their leader just need to get out of there before something happens to him. At that same moment Nicolas noticed someone was charging towards him.

Nicolas took in a deep breath and let his electrical whips disappear waiting for the charging man to come closer. The energy lance was nearly upon him when he suddenly disappeared into a cloud of smoke only to appear right behind the man.

“Not today.” Nicolas spoke, reforming the electrical whip in his one hand. The whip coiled around the man’s waist, shocking him, melting his suite "armor" (what ever he has on) until it burned through to his skin.

Helios held on for dear life when the robot shuddered and began to fall forward. It crashed into the road, cracking the pavement and lay still. The robot's head opened and out fell the pilot. Helios picked himself up and walked down the length of the robot's back to see who it was that had caused so much trouble.

What he saw didn't really surprise him. It turned out to be a boy even younger than him, about fifteen years of age or so. Or so he seemed. Helios knew enough to never judge by appearances.

He stared down at the boy, aware that several guns were trained on him. None of them were firing, presumably because they didn't want to risk missing and injuring the robot's pilot instead.

"Go home" he said in a low voice so only the boy could hear him. "No one is going to win this time."

Operative 212 had known there was a teleporter around, he just hadn't known it was this one. Completly taken by surprise he did not manage to react until the mutant had coiled his energy whip around him. And then he could do nothing but scream.

---

It took a few moments for Geso to come back to his senses and as he did so he saw the mutant Helios standing near to him.

"Go home" he said in a low voice so only the boy could hear him. "No one is going to win this time."

Geso's eyes were filled with pure hatred, but he wasn't in a condition to challenge the mutant to fight and win.

---

Operative 74 opened the door of the plane and the other operatives started to board it, with the exception of two who tied hooks to the robots feet instead.

Unfortunately - from 74's point of view - Geso, or rather Operative 24, had ended up less than 10 meters in front of her.

Of course there was also their target and it was tempting to take the opportunity and shoot him. The backdraw of that was that it would accomplish the mission and get Operative 24 out of the trouble he had maneuvered himself into with the senator. When it came down to it the question was whom she hated more, Operative 24 or the mutant. It wasn't a real contest.

Completly ignoring the mutant she leaned forward and extended a hand toward Geso.

"We've been ordered to withdraw. Get into the plane, 24!"

Fighting himself to his feet Geso stumbled a few steps forward.

---

Forge had watched in awe as the frail, young mutant defeated the meanancing robot single-handedly.

For a moment she thought she'd have to help the blue-eyed one, but it turned out he had matters well in hand.

Then the pilot of the robot spilled out of it's cockpit and was on the verge of escaping.

Hatred stroked the flames in her eyes. There was no way she'd kill henchmen and let the commander escape. She launched himself after Geso, bare hands outstreched. But then, her hands were more deadly then a sword.

---

The sound of a boot on pavement alerted Geso to the mutant woman behind him. Instead of taking the last step to the plane and grasping 74's hand, he fumbled for his knife, his hatred not allowing him to think rational.

He turned his head and saw his doom in her eyes.

Nature had given Geso a natually agile body and he trained as he was he was as quick as it was possible for a normal human, but battered as he was now, he could not evade her anymore. The best he could hope for was taking her with him when he died.

---

Forge was trying to kill his twinbrother. Rolo dived straight toward her, his only thought to save Geso, but he realized he'd be too late.

"No!" his emotions in turmoil the red sigil flashed in Rolos eye. A red dome covered the school and the street as his panic made him cast his suspension far too wide.

He had been told he was theoretically able to do that but warned against it at the same time. The strain would be too much. He wouldn't be able to hold the suspension more than a second. And what good could be accomplished in a second?

It did nor require thought for Rolo to understand his mistake for the very instance he cast his suspension his heart stopped beating completely.

Rolo let go of his flight ability and fell down the last two meters like a stone.

His boots connected with her shoulders, forcing her body forward, straight onto Geso's knife. His suspension broke.

It wasn't his hand that held the weapon, not him that watched the life draining out of her eyes, but he was the one who had killed her.

That was his last thought before he hit the pavement and unconsicousness claimed him, his overtaxed body finally giving out on him.

---

"Operative 24, we were ordered to withdraw!" 74 said sharply. Geso stopped wondering what had happened right now and took 74's hand. The woman was dead and the boy, who was lying on top of her now, didn't move. Not to mention Geso doubted he had decided to fall from the sky and kill the other mutant. No doubt he was dead too.

He lifted his eyes higher and, seeing 212's plight, threw a smoke bomb in his direction which would hopefully confuse the mutants long enough that they could collect the operatives and get away cleanly.

Helios tore his gaze away from the boy as he saw movement further ahead of him. The mutant woman was running forward to attack the boy that had spilled out of the robot's cockpit, hands outstreched and ready to strike. He wasn't the only one to have seen her, the pilot pulled out a knife and swung rounf ready to face his attacker.

"No!"

Helios leapt off the top of the robot, ready to stop the woman from getting too close and prevent either her or the pilot from being attacked, but all of a sudden everything changed. One second the woman and the pilot were a few feet from one another, the next she was lying down at his feet, another boy Helios had not seen before on top of her. Bllod was pooling on the ground.

Frantic with worry Helios rushed past the pilot and kneeled at the female mutant's side. He gently rolled the newcomer off her and turned her over, revealing the knife wound in her chest. He was too late.

"No" he cried again, this time softer and mournful. This was not what he had wanted to happen.

Helios seemed quite distressed over the woman's death 74 noted. Not that she cared. As soon as 212 had been brought inside, she gave the signal and the plane lifted itself into the air again, leaving behind nothing but the destructive traces of the fight.

Geso leaned back in his seat, feeling dazed. He tried to figure out what had gone wrong so drastically but came up with nothing.

((@ Kestra: Before I forget (again), Helios would have been very careful when forcing the crowd back into the school. People probably would have been hurt, perhaps badly, but no deaths would have taken place.))

Helios didn't respond to Nicolas right away, he was too busy lamenting the fate of the fallen mutant. She had probably responded to the armed men tracking him and had rightly guessed they were after a mutant. She had died because she had attempted to save a fellow mutant, him. Her death was his fault. And he didn't even know her name.

Wiping his face Helios rose to his feet. He was about to ask Nicolas to take them home when he remembered the man who had knocked the woman over and aided in her death. He was still lying comatose on the ground where Helios had placed him. The mutant hunters had made no attempt to retrieve him. Was he not one of theirs?

Helios bent down and tugged at the mask covering his face and stepped back in surpise. He had seen that face before, the pilot of the robot.

"What the?"

If not then I suppose oxigen can't pass either? People can’t pass thought it unless Nick allows it, oxygen is always available. What happens if someone attacks out of the barrier. Anyone can leave the barrier if they want, that is why Nick is always by Helios' side so that the barrier can move with him.)
