Dr Conel's Home For Gifted Children

Recommended Posts

"Now is the start of your new life, with your new family. With me. Or, in my native language: Jetzt ist der Beginn ihres neuen Lebens mit ihrer neuen Familie. Mit mir... Willkommen in der Hölle, Kinder." - Dr Wayland Conel

August 16th, 1946. A young man slips across the English border at Dover, his head down, saying very little to anyone; he's quiet and barely looks anyone in the eye as he walks along, not even acknowledging the people around him. He's been at the front, in the army- that's as plain as the fresh, red scar that decorates his left cheek. Those he does speak to might hear a story of how his whole family was wiped out by a single tragedy and he was left an unexpected fortune by a great-aunt, enough to ransom more than a few kings. They say they are sorry for his loss, and he looks at the floor as he thanks them in a voice that's a shade louder than a whisper. They might be less sympathetic if they knew which side he had fought on and the true reason for his detached silences, but none of them even begun to guess he wasn't as he seemed. Not yet, anyway.

Fifteen years later and the not-so-young man stands in his house, in front of a great wall covered in maps and charts; he's frowning deeply but he believes he's about to make the greatest discovery of his life. A discovery about the supernatural, one which would perhaps help it to be finally understood by the sceptics of science.

Magic and people with magical abilities, he knew, had always existed the beginning of since of human civilisation, slipping through the twilight zones of history. Half gods and half devils: they had been both beloved rulers to the powerless masses and hounded to the death by them for something they never asked for. Most of the time they had been rare, especially in the last three centuries, but in the last sixteen years there had been an upsurge in the number of powered individuals in the world and with each passing year they seemed to become more numerous- and more powerful. Some had even made themselves public, making themselves out to be heroes of the people. Results had been mixed, to put it kindly. This sudden increase, he had noticed, had been centred around the populations of Europe and America, with powered births being most common in those who had fled Germany during the later periods of the war. Something about this links with his own memories and he smiles, confident that he had come even closer to the breakthrough he had worked so hard at. It still wasn't anywhere close to being proven, however; he still needed data and participants, people with powers of their own to study, if he was to prove his hypothesis.

But how was he going to be able to find the amount of young supernaturals he needs?

The man looks across his cluttered desk as if hoping to see inspiration there and a pamphlet catches his eye. An idea occurs to him as he picks it up, and mere seconds later he knows exactly what he'll do.

It's now the present day and the same man- looking awfully young for his age- is Headmaster of Dr Conel's Home For Gifted Children: a school specialising in the education of children with supernatural abilities- or superpowers, as the public is increasingly calling them. Advertising mainly by word-of-mouth amongst the supernatural community and direct contact with the families of any young supers that attract his attention, mainly by losing control of their powers and ending up on the news, there's usually a steady flow of students into the Home. Many of them have been rejected or abused by their families, those who were supposed to love them instead afraid of their powers and sometimes not even seeing their own children as human anymore. Many ran away from home, living on the streets and turning to crime to survive. Others come from more stable backgrounds, coming to his Home because they can't deal with the burden of their powers alone and want to be taught how to control them. Some want to help others; some just want to be normal. But, now that they're here, they all have one thing in common.

They're all subjects.

As you know, the Headmaster has more on his mind than teaching the young men and women under his care how to survive, no matter how the teachers below him might feel in the matter; they're subjects in the world's longest-running experiment, his lab rats every one. And, while he might not mean to harm them, it can't be denied that something is hurting the students at the Home. Something is in the grounds, the mangled bodies left behind in the morning the sign of its violent intentions, and not even the Headmaster has been able to stop it killing three times. But he can't- or won't- call for outside help and has grown increasingly distant from everyone else, shutting himself up in the basement for hours on end. The Home is feeling increasingly like a prison, and something has to give...

About the Home

IMAGE OF THE HOME FROM ANOTHER ANGLE

Bought specifically for his research and because he thought it was beautiful, the Home is set in what used to be known as Dollarbeg Castle. Just forty minutes away from Edinburgh and Glasgow, there's a thriving town called Dollar just a short walk away with shops; students sometimes get permission to visit and shop for a few hours, provided they're accompanied by a teacher and on their best behaviour. The residents don't know much about the Home and Conel prefers to keep it that way.

The castle itself has changed a lot since Conel purchased it, with extensive basements being dug and the very cutting edge of technology being installed in every room: flatscreen TVs with every channel you could wish for in the common room, high-speed internet access (email is limited to staff, though), and even a government-level CCTV surveillance system. There's a gym hall in the grounds, the towering room somehow seeming to be larger than the outbuilding itself, and the second floor is devoted to classrooms of every type, even well-equipped laboratories.

All student rooms are en-suite with a shower and shared between two student of the same gender (which might not be the same as their physical sex); they come with two desks, a mirror and a window as standard. Each teacher has their own room, along a different corridor to the student's rooms. Special rooms are made for those who have special requirements.

Security

The castle is protected with a dome-shaped forcefield which inflicts powerful electric shocks to any living thing that touches it, with extended or repeated contact often being fatal; it can be seen as a blue grid in the air, shimmering like a soap bubble. Special bracelets can be used to allow people to pass through freely, but they are made and controlled by Dr Conel. Only he and the staff wear them 24-7, and he can turn them off from his own bracelet at any time. Other bracelets can be given to a student to weaken or turn off their abilities.

There are four detention rooms in the Home, each of which are equipped with devices which completely block the powers of anyone who isn't wearing a special staff bracelet. They are also fire-proof, water-tight and capable of withstanding a direct hit from a nuclear bomb, should that be needed.

I have three characters in the works, and Ruins said I could, so I think that is a good limit.

Eight o'clock on a Monday morning, and the students of Dr Conel's Home were slowly winding their way into the Dining Hall on the first floor; not all were quite with it yet, yawning and rubbing their eyes as they followed the tempting smell of food. Some were still in pyjamas or dressing gowns, some showing the damp hair of the recently showered. Teachers stood here and there, scanning the crowds and keeping the early-morning peace. The Headmaster himself hadn't turned up yet and wouldn't be expected for another ten minutes or so; it was well known that he never showed his face until he'd finished his second cup of coffee.

And yet, despite the general aura of sleepiness that abounded, there was an undercurrent of excitement to be sensed in the way the young men and women talked. A new batch of students had just arrived, late on Sunday evening. They'd been ushered straight to their rooms without the 'old lags' having a chance to have a look at them- unless they'd shared a room, of course- and so the rest of the school had become rather curious about them. Well, they'd soon have a chance to find out...

Garth slipped from the library and into the crowds, running a hand through his green-brown hair as he did so; he hadn't slept a wink last night, as per usual. It was still hard for him to overcome his nocturnal instincts and go to bed when it was dark, instead of in the day, and he was starting to worry that his school work was going to suffer from it. Garth had started spending his sleepless nights in the library, reading up the day's lessons and catching up on what he might have missed as he accidentally drifted off during a teacher's explanations. Sometimes he wondered why they couldn't have lessons at night, just for him, but he supposed that he'd just have to get used to it- it was how the rest of the world worked, after all, and he'd have to change if he wanted to fit in.

The Umbramancer shook himself from his thoughts, looking around himself at the other students; the crowd held some faces he didn't recognise and a smile came to his face as he imagined what new friends he could have this year. Unfortunately that same smile uncovered a mouth full of shark-like teeth, not that Garth noticed. Apart from the teeth (and the eyes) he looked quite normal, a skinny, messy-haired young man in the red tartan shirt and jeans, blinking in the early morning sun.

Below him, Dr Conel made some final adjustments to his hair and jacket, finally- after around an hour of preperation- ready to face the world.

Alone at a table in the library a young man was fast asleep, his head resting on the large volume in front of him. He was so still that it was hard to imagine that he was real, and not some life like doll that had been left behind. He had been there for several hours, missing the arrival of the new students to the school and meeting his new room mate for the first time.

Eventually the sound of birdsong finally penetrated the young man's sleep and he began to stir. Opening his eyes and slowly blinking he started to take in his surroundings. It took another five or so minutes for him to realise he should be elsewhere.

He sat upright and put a hand over his mouth to hide the yawn that erupted from him. The library was very quiet, but he could hear the distant sounds of a large mass of people. Everyone must be gathering together for Conel's welcome speech.

Pushing the chair back the young man closed the book that had been his pillow and stood up. As he moved away from the table he pushed the chair back into place and put the book under his arm. He had better go and see what was happening. Conel didn't like it when people missed his speeches, no matter how many times they had heard it before.

Walking the length of the library the young man opened the door and saw a few people hurrying into the Dining Hall. He closed the library door behind him and walked towards the others. He hoped his new room mate wouldn't be cross he had skipped out on meeting him. He would have to apologise later.

Nova opened his door slightly, peering out into the hallway of the 3rd floor. From where he stood, he could see the other students heading towards the stairs, attempting to make their way to the source of that succulent aroma which drifted out of the kitchen. Nova always hated this, having to walk through a crowd of students every morning, making sure not to accidentally reveal his appearance to them. As he stood there peering out, a couple of students walked by his door, gossiping to one another. The sight of them caused Nova to instinctively shut the door and stick his head against it. By the sound of things they had continued walking, not noticing his little form behind the door.

"Phew... that was too close..." he said to himself, locking the door with his tail. The inside of Nova's room was rather dark, the windows covered with a spare bedsheet hiding him from view of the outside world, yet letting in just enough light for him to see around the room. He bounded over to his bed and leaped onto it, lieing down flat on his chest. He reached under his pillow, pulling out a comic book and began to browse through it, his tail occasionally swooshing from side to side as he enjoyed his comic. He would head downstairs once it was less crowded and therefore less chance of someone walking into his invisible form.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marik stood there in the middle of a crowd of people. He was one of the new students to the school, his parents finally coming to an agreement that this would be a far better solution for his 'problems' rather then being couped up at home. As he stood there, he couldn't help but feel nervous. the feeling of being surrounded on all sides by strangers was a rather new one for him. Yes he had been to crowded shopping malls before, but it was always when he was accompanied by either his mother or father, never alone like this, without a safeguard to prevent anything from happening incase his powers suddenly acted up again. He stood there, turning his head from left to right looking at all the new faces, a bead of sweat forming on his brow as he got increasingly more nervous. He felt so exposed, so vulnerable.
He fidgeted with both his hands, running them up and down the straps of his bagpack attempting to get his mind to think about something far less stressful, however so far that didn't seem to help. His gaze shifted towards the grand staircase as more students began to make their way downstairs.
A petite young girl with very pale blue hair slipped out from her room, closing the door behind her. She hadn't really talked to the other girl in the room yet. There were a couple of students heading in one direction, and she pulled down the floral-print skirt she was wearing nervously. This was her very first day at the school. It was quite intimidating, the other people. She silently walked in the same direction as them, assuming they were heading toward the dining hall. She kept close to the wall, shoulder almost brushing it, as she watched them with a slight wariness in her eyes. She wasn't good at making friends due to her being very quiet.
Mist eventually found herself near a pair of doors, where the other people were going in. From glimpses through it as they opened, she saw even more people. Feeling overwhelmed, she hovered outside the Dining Hall, wondering when she could go in. Every now and then she summoned up the courage to go through, but it seemed to disappear just as she began to step forward.
As the young man approached the doors to the Dining Hall he became aware of a younger girl waiting just outside them. She had very pale blue hair and just as he thought she was going to enter the Dining Hall she drew back, apparently reluctant to emerse herself into the large crowd waiting inside.
The young man stopped walking and watched her make a second attempt, but again she change her mind and withdrew. It seemed her shyness had won over her.
"It's okay" he said in a soft voice, his usual tones. "Nobody is going to hurt you. And they probably won't pay you much attention either. Everyone is too excited to take much in at the moment. A lot of them will be just as nervous as you are."
A couple of new students passed by, laughing and talking, and pulled the Dining Hall's doors open. There was a brief rise in the noise before it swung shut again after them.
Mist didn't pay much attention to the voice until she realised that it was speaking to her. It was a soft voice, gentle. It seemed to radiate calm. Turning about, she was met with the sight of a boy much older than herself. He had dirty blonde hair and... Well, she couldn't make out his eyes at the distance she was away from him. "I know no-one's going to hurt me... It's just a bit scary..." she said quietly back. "...Hopefully no-one will pay much attention to me." That was one lucky thing for the young teenage girl. With her pale looks, she easily blended into the wall, or into the background. People didn't tend to pay much attention to her. She was still standing close to the wall; it offered some sort of comfort to her. She was still not quite believing she was in this school - with people like her! People who, perhaps, weren't accepted in the 'normal,' world.
Garth moved towards the doors of the Dining Hall, Blending in and out of the shadows as he did so to avoid knots of people moving slowly through the crowds; it was slow going, even with his abilities, and after a few seconds he ducked away to wait for the rush to die down. As he did so he spotted a nervous-looking young man hanging around- one of the new students, if he was any judge. The stranger looked a little lost, like he was expecting to be attacked or have to bolt at any second. Garth had seen nervous fidgets like that before, but usually it was from some unfortunate rabbit who'd sensed his eyes on it a split second before he struck. Poor guy needs a friend... That'll make him feel better.
The Umbramancer made his way to the other's side, making sure to approach him from the front so that he accidently didn't shock the stranger. Garth knew some found his appearance a little spooky, so he made sure to put on his friendliest smile and that he wasn't showing too many teeth. "Hey... Morning." he said cheerfully, nodding hello. "You just arrived here, right? My name's Garth Hawdorne. I've been here awhile, a year now, so if there's anything you're unsure about you can just ask me."
The young man walked over to the door and held it open, then turned back and offered his free hand to the girl. She reminded him of some of the girls at his former school. He would often find one now and again hiding amongst the shelves in the library, crying because they had been bullied or turned down by their crush. Some people might call him old fashioned or perhaps even sexist, but he always took pity on them and tried to comfort them. If a girl was in a delicate state, either out of sadness or fear, he couldn't bring himself to just ignore them.
What he didn't know was that several of those girls had been faking it. Before the events of three years ago, he had been considered rather cute by a lot of the female population in his last school, and many girls took advantage of his compassionate nature to get his attention and spend a few minutes in his company.
"Come with me" he told the blue haired girl. "I'll look after you."
Dias opened his eyes and lay in bed, he was thinking about the day before when all the new students arrived. It was a stressful moment for the young man, he was always afraid of hurting someone or saying something stupid. As he finally rose up from his bed he blinked a few times before he looked around the room.
The roommate never returned Dias thought to himself as he looked nervously at the other empty bed. I wonder what he is like, maybe I will meet him in the dining hall.
At those thoughts Dias remembered that everyone should gather there this morning, with a slight panic of being late the young man only changed his shirt and headed out the door. His stomach gave a little turn as he walked down the stairs, not sure what to expect, things could go either extremely well for him or horribly wrong.
The school was enormous and the boy regularly stopped and inspected things when he finally reached the dining hall. There were so many people he thought that he might get a slight panic attack but he composed himself and held his breath as he waited.
With a great yawn a young girl lay in her bed still dozing slightly thinking about her new adventure at the school. In an instant Taya got up and stood on her bed looking around for her new roommate. A puzzled expression appeared on her face when she noticed that her roommate wasn’t in the room anymore.
“Mmm… wonder where she went.” She spoke to herself as she got off her bed and heard voices outside the door. Taya picked up her gown and made her way out. She could hear some of the gossip from the other students and something about the dining room. Curious she followed them down the stairs, listening to their conversation.
As they reached the dining hall Taya was slightly surprised by the amount of students there was. Smiling she nodded and greeted everyone she passed wondering why they were all waiting around here for.
Mist watched him to to the doors, thinking he had given up on her and was going to go on ahead. It didn't turn out so. He was holding the door open, a hand stretched out to her. His words made her relax slightly; he would look after her? She wasn't quite sure what that meant. Probably that he'd point to a couple of tables and people, and then disappear off to his friends, having a laugh at the girl hanging around the walls. She shyly put her hand in his, stepping forward and through the door which was being held open. She wasn't quite sure what he wanted with her hand. She simply let it there; it was her new comforter. The sound was rather loud, and she flinched back slightly at it. Her mouth opened slightly as she looked about the place. There were so many people. She stepped back with one foot, wanting to turn and go back outside again.
Marik was shaken out of his nervous stupor by a voice. He was not expecting to be approached by another student, especially when the room was as crowded as this. He turned to look at the source of the voice, when he suddenly took a step back. What greeted him was a rather awkward looking teen, around the same age as him. He could tell that he was doing his best to smile, however rather then comforting Marik, it sort of freaked him out, "M.. morning.." he he replied,, doing his best to recompose himself. Marik was still fidgeting with the straps to his bag, however the speed in which he was fidgeting had slowed down to an extent. "Yeah.. I just arrived... the name's Marik.." he stated, slwoly extending an arm out for a hand shake. Being new to the business of introducing himself to strangers, he decided to mimick what he had seen on the television.
"Do you by chance know where room 2 is?" he asked, "I'd like to put my stuff there first.."
~~
Loud laughter could be heard from within Nova's room, as he read his comic. A couple of slowpokes who were still making their way to the breakfast hall stopped and edged closer to Nova's door. Their curiosity getting the better of them. It was not the first time that they had heard noises come from behind that locked door. Normally if it were any other room, the sound of laughter would have been dismissed as nothing out of the extraordinary however this room was different. Neither of them, nor their friends for that matter knew which student was staying in that room. They had never seen anybody exit or enter that room during their time enrolled at the school. Unable to quench their curiousity they knocked on the door, causing Nova to cease his laughter and go invisible. He was now sat upright on his bed, his gaze focused towards the door and the comic held tightly against his chest. If one where to enter the room, all they would see on his bed would be a levitating comic book.
When the girl gave him her hand the young man closed his fingers around it firmly but gently and led her into the Dining Hall. Once she was inside he let the door swing back into place and led her deeper into the room.
A few people looked at them, the young man was much taller than the small girl he was escorting, but quickly went back to their own conversations. The man led the blue haired girl to one side and let go of her hand.
From where they stood they could get a good view of the room, but the young man placed himself so that the girl was half hidden from sight, his tall frame obstructing her from many of the other students.
"When Dr Conel appears no one will be looking at anyone but him" he whispered to his charge. "He likes to put on a small show."
Mist let him lead her into the room, walking close behind him. She cringed away from the looks, almost wishing that she had stayed outside of the room. It was only then that she realised just how tall he was; probably a third of her height taller than the girl! It would have been intimidating if he didn't seem so gentle. She was very grateful when he obstructed her from view of the other students. Her funny colour of hair drew looks in normal society; perhaps they found it surprising? But, no, that couldn't be it. She had seen much stranger people on the way there. Maybe it was simply her being new and all. Nodding at his words, she still stayed close to him. "...That's good... Do you mind if I ask you your name?" she whispered back.
Looking down and round and the younger girl the man smiled.
"My name is Abel. Abel Bradley."
Many years ago his friends had called him 'Abe', but that was his old life. These days he didn't feel like an Abe any more. It seemed too innocent for the world he moved in now. Ever since he had enrolled at Dr Conel's school nearly three years ago, he had been sticking with Abel. It seemed more fitting.
"How shall I address you?" he asked.
As he had done so before many new students felt like changing their names when they enrolled. It was a whole new life here after all, so a new name felt right. A lot of students liked to be known soley by their nicknames or aliases, even by the teachers.
"I'm Mist Oute. You- You can call me Mist," she replied back quietly. Abel. That wasn't a very common name, at least, from what names she had learned in her fifteen years of life. Then again, her name was probably even less common. It was more of a name you'd give to a pet dog or cat. The name, she had decided, suited her more than ever now. With her pale hair and general quiet- and shyness, she was very much a, 'Mist.' By then, the two weren't really getting any more strange looks from the other students. It seemed they had gotten bored with trying to peer around the rather tall Abel. She wondered where his friends were; no-one had called out to him to go stand with them. He was so nice, she would have thought he'd have plenty! "Is it rude if I ask you how old you are...?"
As Nova sat there, he could just barely hear the conversation the door knockers were having. At first they seemed to be argueing about the sudden lack of noise coming from Nova's room and the possibility of them forcefully opening the door, which in turn sent a cold shiver down Nova's spine. Deciding that he had to find out more about their plan, he decided to get closer to the door. Nova slowly edged his way off the bed, tip toeing towards the door so that he could better hear what their plan was. As he made his way towards the door, a 3rd voice had spoken out, mentioning something about a meeting, which in turn seemed to have an affect on the other two. As they began to speak in a more hurried tone.
Nova heard them mutter something barely audible before he heard the sound of running footsteps getting softer and softer the further away they were from his door. "What Meeting?" he thought to himself, using his tail to scratch the top of his head.
