Posted September 2, 2012 So non-forum members can access it maybe? (thinks thats what the op is going for) Can you IMAGINE how clogged it would get with passing people who just click to see what it is ? But also - the OP seems to be suggesting it as a popup. That would be a real pain.... (not that I allow popups ! ) I find it works fine in a separate tab.... Share this post Link to post
Posted September 2, 2012 especially when hunting >.<, however if there was a button that opened it in a new tab that'd be fine. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) I don't support this. Sorry. I think it'd just cause strain on the server and cause the cave to lag. I like the IRC how it is now; I don't think it needs to be changed. Edited September 2, 2012 by StormWizard212 Share this post Link to post
Posted September 2, 2012 People can get to the IRC if they are not forum-goers, so I do not support this. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) A good number of the users connecting to chat use the mibbit link in tjs sig. I would NOT want a chat layover in the cave, main reasons being: server strain, lack of mods... and what mods we /do/ have lack "in game" powers. This is not the type of game that supports an in game chat system. The only support you would get from me is a possible link to the chat under /help... and even then it is very very hesitant support. If you reasoning for this is because you want to be able to watch chat while hunting, then shrink firefox/your browser) down a little and use a real client of some form. The chat rules thread tells you several options for clients. I personally use pidgin currently, xchat when im on the linux computer. using a client causes less lag, plus i dont have to deal with changing tabs to catch up. I can easily hunt while watching chat (generally a good 10 tabs worth of chat). If you use pidgin, swap to tree style tabs, that way you can see every channel and pm you have open at once to watch for updates. Edited September 2, 2012 by Thuban Share this post Link to post

I wouldn't have a problem with a link to the IRC in the cave, it wouldn't hurt anything. But defiantly not a pop-up box in the cave. Share this post Link to post

Posted September 2, 2012 I do not see how it would work without possibly causing issues that my possibly arise from game lag. This would be my particular concern as each time a page if refreshed the chat would also be refreshed. Also from a staff point of view, this idea would be a nightmare to moderate. Considering there could be several hundred users chatting. Being in livestreams with 2000+ people chatting away. It would be nearly pointless to have a conversation with someone the chat could be going so fast. But it might be a brilliant way of catching multi-scrollers. I would not object to an link in the account section that makes it easier for people to find chat. But not an in game chat system. Consider the idea shot down by your local Decepticon IRC chat mod. Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Yes, but people can still get to the chat via the forum if they are not logged in, as far as I know. Indeed they can. But please no popup. It is easy to get to so.... The extra load would be if it was an IN GAME thing. That really isn't needed, IMHO. Edited September 2, 2012 by fuzzbucket Share this post Link to post
Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Yes, but people can still get to the chat via the forum if they are not logged in, as far as I know. Not everyone goes onto the forums, or even knows about the IRC. I have had a hell of a time trying to find the link on the forums for IRC, and I knew what I was looking for. And I will repeat, please no pop ups. A link would be all that is needed. Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) I seriouslly do NOT want IRC on the cave itself. Do you know the amount of lag it will generate?! A link to it will be fine but not the actual chat. Edited September 2, 2012 by Dolphinsong Share this post Link to post

And I will repeat, please no pop ups. A link would be all that is needed. It's literally pinned under the general DC topic -- I never had any trouble finding it, probably because I'm so used to looking for pinned topics. Share this post Link to post

Posted September 2, 2012 the link is pinned under site discussion. People tend to ignore pinned topics. Thanks, I rarely go into that forum. I normally look in help and suggestions/requests. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 3, 2012 What about a link that opens a new tab or something like that? But yeah i understand what you mean by the chat going to fast to talk :/ Share this post Link to post
Posted September 3, 2012 I agree with no lay-over/integration into the site itself, that would lag everything down and probably lead to a lot of issues, both for chat mods and for site users. A link somewhere I wouldn't object to, though - as long as we (IRC mods) got lots of notice so that we could prepare for a possible uptick in use. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 3, 2012 I'm happy with the way the IRC can be accessed at the moment. It's not that hard to find the link at all. I would hate for a pop-up IRC to be introduced to the cave - I like how clean and simplistic the main site is. Keep IRC separate, chat rooms can already lag enough without bringing more to the cave. ;p Share this post Link to post
Posted September 3, 2012 What about a link that opens a new tab or something like that? Middle click with your mouse button or shift click. it'll open a new tab. You can also split the tabs off the browser so it's its own window. tile those however you want. Share this post Link to post

I think the idea was a link that would open IRC in a new tab. But all you need is a bookmark - and you can always pin that to your toolbar... Share this post Link to post
Posted September 6, 2012 For reasons already stated, I'd prefer IRC stay as is and stay advertised as is. Share this post Link to post
