The Strength Lies Within

Story

You run through the long grass, the warm sun beating down on your tiny body. Away from the cave and the adult dragons, you are chasing insects and practicing your hunting skills. You focus on a large grasshopper and crouch. You pounce, paws outstretched, landing on the insect and pinning it beneath your weight. You are about to kill it when suddenly something comes down on top of you. It's a net, with several heavy weights attached to it. You let the grasshopper escape and start to kick, struggle, and squeal for your parents, but the more you struggle, the more tangled you become. Your parents are too far away to hear your desperate cries.

Finally, after what seems like an eternity, you collapse with exhaustion and curl up on the ground. That's when you see a huge monster looming over you. You curl up tighter in fear, watching the monster as it turns and shouts. You see three others come running up, and you realise you know what they are. Your parents told stories of them stealing eggs and hatchlings and taking them somewhere where they are never seen again. Humans.

One of the humans is carrying a small cage with wire mesh walls. They take the net with you in it and push you roughly into the cage. You hit the cold, hard metal floor and scrabble desperately to escape, your tiny claws useless against the metal. You grab onto the mesh, sticking your paws through and chewing on the wire, trying to find a way out as you are carried away. Suddenly, you are put down firmly and you fall over, shrouded in darkness as a large door is shut over you. Silence reigns for a minute, and you muster up the courage to look out. You peer through the wire and see several other hatchlings around, all in cages. You suddenly start moving, and you are taken away from the land you grew up in.

Finally the ride stops, and the humans open the door. A tremendous amount of noise reaches your ears, and you cower back. Above the consant sound you hear terrified scrabbling as cages are picked up. Then, one of the humans reaches over and picks your cage up. They attach something to the door of your cage, then carry you into a large building and set you along with all the other hatchlings down on a table in a long line. One of the humans makes his way along the table, opening up each cage in turn, doing something to each hatchling within. Soon, your door is opened and you make a break for it. Large hands clamp over you, and something stabs you in the foreleg. You feel something cold flowing into your body, and you suddenly feel strangely sleepy. The cage door is shut and tiredness takes over. You fall to the floor of your cage and black out.

You wake up later in a stark white room. How long were you asleep? Hours? Days? Weeks? You blink slowly and look around. It takes you a few seconds to adjust to the light and when you do, you can get a good look at the room. You stand up and find you feel a lot weaker than normal. You pass that off as simply because of your rough ride, but then you catch a glimpse of your foreleg. You squeal in shock and stumble back, managing to get a good look at the rest of your body. You are not the hatchling you used to be. You are thin, weak, and a distinct shade of olive green. You look out of your cage and see for the first time that you are on a shelf with many other dragons, all the same as you, red-eyed, weak, and sickly. It must have been caused by what the humans injected you with. But why?

As you ponder the cause, you notice more hatchlings on the other side of the room. But they are not the same as you - they're strong and perfectly normal. You look at them for a minute before your eyes flicker down to the table in the centre of the room, noticing something.

It's a notepad. As you strain to look at it, you see it has numbers written on it in three columns.

5.342-----7.432------6.432

5.343-----5. 736-----6.784

5.456-----4.237------7.520

6.339-----5.328------5.865

The list carries on. As you look harder, you notice that over three quarters of the numbers have been crossed out. Confused, you lean back in your cage and lie down on the floor. Then you notice the white plastic tag the human attached earlier hanging down from the door of your cage. You stand up and curiously grab it with your paw, realising it has numbers on it. You look around at the other cages and notice that every single one has number tags on it too.

5.863

5.296

6.142

You look down at the notepad again. Those numbers obviously represent dragons - but why are some crossed out? You also notice that the ones that aren't crossed out are the numbers of the dragons on the shelves, and that you and all the other hatchlings have wrist-bands with the same number as the one on their cage tags. Is that so they can identify you if you escape?

Two humans in white coats stride into the room and to the table. They start muttering amongst themselves, and you lean forward to listen. As you do so, you see other hatchlings doing the same. They suspect something too.

'5.342 made it to the third stage.' The human speaking takes out a pen and crosses out a number.

'That's better than last time.' The other human mutters.

You look at the other hatchlings. Third stage of what?

'Once they can make it to stage seven we know we have hit upon a good formula. We can start advanced tests then.'

Advanced tests? Formula? You strain to listen to more, but the humans have seemingly finished their business and walk out of the room. You whimper and look at the lock to your door. There is no way out. You are doomed.

You curl up in the corner, but you hear scratches and scrabbles at the far end of your shelf. You grunt in frustration and stand up again. You look past all the cages to the last cage in line and see one small green hatchling playing with the lock to its door. Then the door swings open. The little dragon slips out, lands on the floor with a gentle thud and scurries under the table. You continue to watch in fascination along with the other dragons. The escaped hatchling looks around the room. It seems to be planning something.

Plot

You are a hatchling in a city lab where young dragons are turned into Neglecteds in order to experiment on them for a reason unknown to you. So far every dragon has died in these experiments. But fortunately for you, one of the captured hatchlings has escaped and frees you along with other dragons. You must now escape the building and the city, and learn how to thrive without adult protection and with your weak body. The scientists provide a constant threat as they attempt to recapture you. And on top of it all, you must find a way to prevent other dragons suffering the same fate as many others before.

When he was eventually found lying at the base of the cliff, everyone thought he would not survive. He did, and even managed to beat his rival in a fight shortly afterwards.

Personality: RP'd

Appearance: user posted image He has a small scar on his neck that carries across the centre and down to the chest and a larger one on his face that goes under his eye and across his mouth. Alshain crouched behind a table leg, examining the room around him. Where the humans normally came through was now blocked off. No good escape route there. He dashed out from under the table, running as fast as his thin, weak legs could carry him. He tried to stop; the floor was unnaturally smooth and he crashed into the wall. He jumped onto the lowest row of Neglected cages, reaching down and fiddling with the locks in the same way he did with his. They resisted his attempts to unlock them. Alshain scurried across the cages to the other end of the shelf and jumped off onto the floor, crouching low and breathing fast. There has to be a way to get them out...there has to be... he frantically told himself. Any minute now a human could come back. And then he'd be in big trouble. He looked up at the shelves - there were more than he originally though. At least five row of cages stood before him, not including the cages of normal dragons on the other side of the room.

Bloodveins cage was on the 2nd row, he saw the other ND trying to open the cages on the bottom row. Using all of the strength in his new weak little body he slammed against the side of the cage trying desperatly to get out or push it off the shelf. He yelled out at the escaped dragon for help.

((A few caps would be nice x3))

Alshain glanced at Bloodvein and quickly replied to Whiteny. When the humans came in earlier and unlocked a cage, I think they used something shiny and thin. Is there one in here? Alshain doubted there would be, and if that was the case he would have to find a new method of escape. He then turned his attention back to Bloodvein, climbing up the shelves with some difficulty. He ran across the top of the cages until he reached Bloodvein's. 'I'll find a way to let you out.' he said in what he hoped was in a reassuring tone.

Bloodvein smiled at the hatchling,

"What do you need? I've been here for months and could locate it..."

He looked around at the other cages, most of them were shaking as the terrified hatchlings attempted to get out an escape with the hatchling.

"Whats your name anyway?"

Alshain leant over the cage, looking down at Bloodvein. 'The object the humans use to unlock cages. It's thin, fairly small and shiny. If that's in here, I can free you all. I've just asked another hatchling if she can see it.' A distant thump made him look up and around. After a few long seconds of silence he lowered himself back down. 'My name's Alshain. Yours?'

Bloodvein smiled,

"Im Bloodvein, from what I've seen and heard those are called keys, they hang them up outside... Not sure how to get out there though...."

He grabbed the lock on the cage and stuck his claw into it and attempted to open it. He couldnt, then waited for Alshain to find the keys.

Taldaer watched, it's gleaming red eyes glinting with curiosity. As far as it knew, it was the only ungendered. It began to wonder what it was like to actually have a gender. It shook this thought off and continued watching, intrigued by the other hatchling's efforts to help them all. Taldaer was on the fourth row. It lay down and continued watching, curious with what was happening, hoping this dragon could succed in freeing them all. But it had learnt not to get it's hopes up too high. Taldaer had tried many times to escape from it's cage, but had never been able to.

Bloodvein hit the lock after trying to open it with his claw. It suddenly snapped open after the hit, he smiled in suprise, a good suprise. Then he pushed open the door of the cage and got out slowly looking around the room. He could now see all the dragons and realised that there was more than he though. He crawled up the cage doors to the top row and looked out across the room.
