The Backstory

Far away in space, there lies a beautiful blue planet, full of strange and wonderful creatures. Many years ago, this planet was discovered by the InterGalactic Earth Federation, and the effort to colonize this wonderful planet, Valerahn, was started.

As more and more of Valerahn's surface was explored, it became apparent that the planet housed very little unintelligent life. Even the plants on Valerahn were more intelligent than the average human being, and the plants, as well as most of the animals, were angry at their planet being invaded. So the few humans that did land on Valerahn's rich surface were quickly driven away, every attempt at colonization thwarted by hostile attacks and the brute force of the native fauna and flora. That is, until the valley was discovered.

The Valley held the best of Valerahn life, everything that had been discovered and more. The best discovery, however, was by far the dragons. Inhabiting only a few islands in the center of the valley's enormous lake, the dragons were the rarest of Valerahn life, as well as the most human-like in the way they thought and acted. A colony was quickly established on the dragon's island, the dragons themselves quickly becoming subject to human's intense curiosity, and vice versa. The dragons warily welcomed the humans into their island sanctuary, quickly mastering the human's alien language. The uneasy truce that had formed soon evolved into a solid bond as humans began to nurture the abandoned eggs of dragons, forming an inseparable connection between the man and beast. Once a human and dragon had bonded, they could read each others' emotions, and did almost everything together. The dragon's powers sometimes were increased by a bond. For example, a dragon who could manipulate the weather enough to create a strong breeze could, with their bond's help, create a tornado.

Now humans have lived on Valerahn's island village for nearly a century, and a new threat has risen. On the outside walls of the valley, a new species of dragon have been appearing, similar to the familiar island faces, but dark, twisted, and much more violent. Anyone, human or dragon, who goes near them, is attacked, and once you are attacked (if you survive, that is), you start to change, becoming darker, until you are one of them, too. At first, these creatures were a cause for speculation, but were not a problem. If you went near them, they attacked, like any dumb animal. However, things got bad when the beasts, known as Darklings, began to actively seek out and attack humans and dragons, purposefully attacking the village and the dragon colonies.

Now, it is up to the few humans and dragons brave enough to face this threat to defend their home. Villagers and dragons must unite to stop the Darklings. Can a cure to the Darkness be found? Can The Darklings be driven out of the Valley? Join and begin the battle!

Other Information

The villagers on Valerahn have almost no contact with anything outside of the valley, and although they know that Earth was originally their home, there is very little connection to their home planet. Every ten years, a ship from Earth comes laden with supplies like canned food, oil, small generators and technology, and other luxuries, but that is one of their last connections to their home planet. The villagers live a fairly primitive life compared to most humans, relying on whatever they can make with their hands or find in the valley.

The villagers and the dragons are ruled by a council of the six wisest humans and dragons in the Valley, elected by both the dragons and the humans. Oftentimes, the dragons would bond with the human council members. In the small village, there are few conflicts, and those that do appear were usually easy to resolve. The council, due to this fact, has become more of a symbol of peace, and less and less the reigning government.

Dragons and humans, over the years, have come to depend on each other. Dragons, especially large ones, help with heavy lifting, or use their powers to help the crops or prevent storms. Humans, in return, provide the dragons with companionship and tools that the dragons cannot make themselves. Also, humans and dragons together will protect each other, and stand a much higher chance of survival.

Powers

Powers can be as extreme as you want, but generally, the bigger the power, the more energy it takes. They should only apply to one area (e.g. weather, telepathy, plants). Also, powers cannot control other characters without their consent.

Rules!!!

*No spamming

*please don't god mod or make your characters Mary Sue's/Gary Stu's

*Up to three characters per person

*A human can be bonded to up to three dragons at once, but dragons can only bond with one human

*Bonds can form up until the dragon is a fully grown adult (about 100 years)

*Use only Dragon Cave dragons, preferably dragons that you own (a list is here ===> Dragoncave Wiki: Dragon Types)

*This is a semi-literate rp, so no one-liners please.

Format for Dragons

Name: Beryl

Age: 18

Gender: Female

Bond: No bond yet

Dragon Type/Appearance: Female Royal Blue

Personality: Beryl is the calm body guard type of dragon. She is usually quiet and lets others make decisions. If they ask for her input, she'll give it. She doesn't really like to talk and just sits idly by. She will defend her bonded with her life though, making her loyal like a body guard. She's stoic so she doesn't really have emotion. Or so it seems. If anyone can get her to break her shell, they'll find a caring but shy dragon inside.

History: Beryl grew up fighting. From the moment she had broken through the shell of her egg, she was a fighter. She fought back the darklings as a hatchling, especially the hatchling darklings. As she got older, she was assigned as a guard to one of the higher up dragons. From there, she decided she would bond with a human but still has her guarded demeanor from being a guard for 5 years.

Powers: Night vision, control/manipulation of water/ice, shadow blending and control.

Format For Humans

Name: Crystal Varian

Age: 16

Gender: Female

Appearance: [x]

Bond(s): None

Personality:Crystal is a prankster. She loves to play pranks and be a smarta**. It's her favorite hobby. She loves to act like a clown sometimes, too. She enjoys the reactions she gets from people when she annoys them or makes them angry, always giggling at it. She will giggle if you get hurt as well, but only if it's not a serious injury. She, despite her playfulness of a fourteen year old or younger, is actually a calm person when she's alone, enjoying life and the apparent stillness of it when she's alone. She loves nature and loves to draw and she especially loves to draw dragons. If anyone can get her to calm down and look past her annoying nature, they'll find a playful, caring girl inside.

History: Crystal grew up on the Valerahn islands. Her parents kept her isolated because of the rising Darkness until one day, her parents were taken from her by the darkness. She escaped, barely, and has now irked out a living with the few villagers and dragons left.

Format for Dragons

Name: Juliaka [Jul or Caretaker for the youthful]

Age: Between teenhood and adult age.

Gender: Female

Bond: Has this.. connection to youths. Not necessarily a bond, for there can only be one, but she responds more towards young humans and hatchings or eggs from dragons, calling her "The Caretaker"

Dragon Type/Appearance: An unusually hued female with these somewhat tinted purple colored eyes. Apart from that her frame is quite lithe like and flexible. Notionally the normally silver plates on her torso area and such are a ebony hue, but the shield on her tail is quite reflective and shiny. Often uses it to shine a light into the eyes of any pursuing attackers, otherwise often actually keeps it covered in dirt to reduce glare.

Personality: A gentle, seemingly shy at first sight, but quite graceful she-dragon. Her voice is like that of the melodic tone of ringing bells, usually. That voice of hers often if provoked can change into a bellowing howl, ranging far and wide as a warning signal. The high pitch tone normally will shatter the ecosystem around her and be able to hear quite some distance away. Other then that, she is shy, until you get to know her. In which once you open up her exterior you can find a whole different dragon, energetic, joyful, and a bit.. [like all teens] trickily.

History (Optional): She was one of the dragons who lived in the era of which the humans where coming, though she was young at that age, she eventually made a life of trying to protect them. A bond no, but like many of her kind - they had awoken that of the motherly figure in her to one's eggs. Ever sense, she has been called upon to be that of their caretaker.

Powers (Up to three): Unless an extreme sense of protective motherly will is a power, not really any.

{I was think perhaps she could help take care of the eggs and such.}

Name:Nomadic [Nomad]

Age: Elderly

Gender: Male

Bond: Hes a nomadic dragon, travels from place to place. so no.

Dragon Type/appearance + Personality: A wise old male Red Dragon, out of his prime though. His scales show the battles of his younger days, back when he was a young (still nomadic) male looking for something such as a mate. Upon his torso he bares the biggest and most vivid fight of his life, a four claw mark etch into his under skin is shown, his scales not grown back, and never will, he shows it with almost shame. In his younger days, he showed it like a scar of victory, but upon his vast and long years, it has grown more of a burden - for the scar on his chest (Which he didn't realize when he was younger) showed both a serious attempt on his life, and a mark of sin. Though his back is covered with scars, most old, very little new, another two notable marks is his one quarter missing tail, as arrogant as he was as a youth, the scar upon his chest and also the other notable scars along and across his right eye it was not enough evidence until he got a sliver of his tail chomped away. As for his right eye's scar, there is one long sharp and straight etch into it and smaller lesser scars, that had healed more over time, if you look at him you'll notice he slightly squints in that eye, and with his slowly deteriorating eyesight, he has a far harder time to see out of that one then his left.

History (Optional): Nomad was born into a at-time group of nomadic males (females migrated in and out and came every breeding season) long before the arrival of humans. Each time the females came, he had to fight the bigger males just to stay in of the group, because simply they didn't want the competition to get at the females the next year, in which all small or weak or vulnerable dragons where exiled, and for some.. for those toxin introduced males who couldn't control their urges.. where killed. So naturally, he grew up there, in which soon once he was feeling a bit elderly.. and of bred a fair amount, had stepped down to travel alone. This was the time the humans came. They fascinated him. He followed them to what they now call their island, and is forced to stick close to them because despite how he doesn't want to admit it - he is afraid of the invader's and their rabid stance, attacking dragons. Which he had only seen once during a dragon ruts, but not like they do.

Powers (Up to three): His large titanic frame can actually shatter the ground if he focuses his weight enough, though he can't dive like he use to into the ground, cause his wings don't work anymore, he is a slow but hard hitting male.

((Yes, Fire-Ice, you could start as a darkling, but please specify that in your character info. Other than that, I think we're ready to start!))

Kiera peeked out of the hut she and her family lived in. It was a black night, so there wouldn’t be any villagers around... hopefully. Slipping out of her home, she called to her bond and headed towards the forest.

--- --- ---

Slipstream floated above one of the wild dragons, listening in on their peaceful dreams. She had arrived at the forest a little bit before her bond, Kiera, and was getting seriously bored. Maybe she could influence the dragon’s dreams? It would be good practice on her telepathic abilities, and Kiera wasn’t here to tell her not to mess with other people’s minds. She floated down closer to the dragon, sending out a particularly ridiculous aura. Instead of the dragon’s dreams changing, however, she heard a giggle behind her, immediately followed by Kiera’s reprimanding voice. “Slip, how many times have I told you not to mess with other people’s thoughts?” Slipstream wheeled around and came face to face with a frowning Kiera. It would have been so funny, though… Slipstream nudged her bond affectionately, and Kiera’s annoyed façade broke down onto a smile. “All right, let me on, Slipstream.” Seconds later, kiera had mounted up and the two were soaring through the night sky.

Vrans yawned when something woke him. Sounded like talking. Then the flap of wings and then silence. He decided it must be morning then and got up and poked his head out of the tent. Night sky of stars, and maybe a cloud or too. He saw the silloet of a dragon and the human it bonded with in the sky. He watched for a few moments then decided to find some food. He passed a few other humans as he walked. He sat down..... where was the food being served again? He kept forgetting.

Crystal ran through the forest. She jumped over tree roots and bushes. She wasn't really running form anything. She was just practicing her running. Everyday she seemed to run faster than before. She enjoyed the freedom of running. It was a good replacement for not being able to ride on a dragon. She was in the forest to find one actually. She envied those who had bonded with a dragon since they were a child and wished to find one of her own. She suddenly stopped her run and slowed down, coming to rest in the roots of a large tree. She sighed and looked at the ground. She had no way of protecting her family when they were taken by the Darkness because she had not been bonded. These memories were fresh. It had happened less than a year ago. She sighed and sat there, in a nightmare of her thoughts, thinking of ways she could have saved them had they never let her out of the house to find an egg or dragon to bond with.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Royal Blue named Beryl trudged through what remained of the village after the Darklings kept pressing forward. She looked back and forth, as stoic and as silent as she ever was. She laid down just outside the village parameters and watched the growing dawn. She didn't have much else to do besides guard the remnants of the villagers and dragons. She kept her guard up as she watched a dragon and their bond go out into the forest. She growled. Oh well, it was their fault if they got caught by a darkling, not her's. She shook her head and continued her guard duty.
As the morning light shrone through, it awoke the sleeping dragon. Arising from the earth to place a long look towards the glaring back sky, its vibrent colors mseeping into her vision befoe swiftly looking away. Looking around, she watched as some of the humans came. She watched as some bonded with the hatchlings, a weird sight it seemed. She had yet to bond with a human, she wasn't sure if she even wanted to.. but that didn't matter now. As the humans poored in like water in a storm, dropping their childern off, and so did they food. It seemed like her payment, but she didn't really need one. Sometimes she envied those who got to get the rush of the hunt. Where ever that may be. Looking upon the hatchings, she turned her head towards the human childern. So young and fragile it seemed.. humans of all kinds seemed fragile. But nevertheless they had turned towards us for protection.. or was it the other way around?
Taking that away from her mind, she arose and streched, the few others that accompanyed her at the daycare where never here till the late hours. Even then.. they seemed to enjoy sleeping more then anything else. Truely, she was the only one who cared for them. So she had to observe everything they did. Turning her gaze from those in the room, she turned towards the egg section. Neatly segregated from the human and hatchling rooms (in which each had their own little private areas) she checked upon them, made sure they was warm, as one of the other caretakers arrived for their turn. She gladly helped them, and watching the childern of different kinds closely, she was content.
~~
Shifting throughout the growth of the forest, the elderly and cracky male covered in scars slid forth across the terrain. His scales shimmering with a old warn down hue of crimson. His wings.. weak. He had long since felt the reward of a long flight, and was strickened to remain on the earth where it was so hard to get about. Nevertheless, he did get around. He stuck towards the human side of the territorys, for the few but new scars he had bared, showed the claw marks of dragons. Recently, he had came across that of a patrol, and earned himself a scar across the shoulderblade and shoulder of the wing. He might as well of lost his entire wing.. they didn't help him anymore. Well, only in battles. He was slow though, any wing attack where he would slam into them could possibly shatter his wing bones, or worse. Atleast staying towards the human side of the territory seemed a bit more.. safe.
Hysteria wobbled in her egg. Half lit by the light that went through a crack in her egg, and half lit by darkness in her egg. She covered her eyes at teh sight of the bright thing that shone through the cracks, not liking what was out there. As she was shifting her movement, the egg bumped into a nearby tree and crashed. Hysteria let out a tiny squeal andhobbled into a bush.What is this place? I've never seen it before! the young Shadow Walker thought. Hysteria gazed around, dazed by the light that was so new. As a squirrel passed by, it stared at Hysteria in shock. Just as she was turning around, it scuttled away, leaving it's scent for Hysteria. Hysteria grunted as the squirrel scuttled away.Aww! Why did he run away? She thought, watching as it became a dot, then nothing.
((Powers normally mean things they can do that most arn't able to do. Take a look through others character sheets to see what I mean smile.gif ))
Vrans decided to head out into the forest. Grab some food and eat then return. Hopefully unscathed. He began to think of his past as he walked into the forest where it was dark. As the sun had yet to rise that met the forest was almost black... to the human eye. He heard a twig and paused. He tilted his head to the side and looked in the direction. Nothing... as of yet. He went back to hunting. But the shadows and his mind where playing tricks on him. He could have sworn he saw glimpses of darklings. He growled thinking it was real. One seemed to taunt him from behind a tree. He lashed out knocking the tree down. He went to see the darkling he had killed to see... nothing was under the tree. He was having a relaps of his young years when the darklings attacked.
For one as young as he was such attacks can leave young ones scarred in the mind. Or leave the mind traumatized. Which can lead to one forgetting entire parts of there lives as the brain will sometimes close off that area where the memory was recorded. Sometimes though the brain does access the information in these area's which can have any amount of results. For Vrans it was him thinking he was reliving the memory. the larger he grew the more damage he could end up doing till he is either snapped out of it or leaves it him self.
A young girl of sixteen sat on a tall rock, looking over a rushing river. The faint rays of early orange sunlight shone about her, turning the grass golden. Lifting her head, the girl ran her fingers through her long, jet black hair before skipping a smooth, grey stone into the river. Her light blue eyes watched it plop into the water and a slight smile tugged at her lips. She adjusted the deep blue feather in her hair and sighed, the gentle wind caressing her skin. It was so peaceful, away from the noisy, boisterous village. Her name was Jennifer. She adored the majestic Dragon species and what she wanted more than anything in the world, was a treasured bond with one of them.
Rin crawled around the inside of the egg trying to open it but it wouldn't crack open. He tried a different approach he slammed his tail againts the egg until a crack appeared. Finally able to see light he repeated the process again and again til he was freed and crawled out and he realized he was alone outside so he started crying desperately for his parents.
((Go ahead and start, dragon-shard))
Kiera lay, snuggled up against Slipstream's back, enjoying an early flight. It was so peaceful up high... other than the dragons, no one was ever up here. She gazed down into the forest below, and signaled for slipstream to go down. Is something wrong, Kiera? Slipstream asked. Kiera shook her head. She had seen something... dragonish. But she knew wild dragons usually didn't stray far from their group, so what was it?
Slipstream spialed downwards lazily, wondering what her bond had spotted. A high pitched squeak reached her ears and she turned her head sharply to pinpoint the sound. There was a hatchling on the ground, doing its best to keep up with her on it's newborn legs. She settled into a perfect landing, her bond already slipping off her back, and together they made their way towards the hatchling. It was a gorgeous royal blue, and it had the fragile ferocity of a newborn dragon. Slip felt something soften in her heart. She nuzzled the baby gently, crooning a nursery song under her breath. Oh, you poor little lost one, she whispered. Where has your family gone?
Rin squeaked at no longer being alone seeing as someone else was here. He nuzzled this new dragon as it nuzzled him. But he stared suspiciously at the other creature feeling as though it would take him away and take away the only ease ever felt in his life time.
Slipstream felt the tiny hatchling's unease toward her bond. It confused her- how could anyone not trust Kiera? then again, she had been bonded with Kiera since the day she had hatched, even in the egg. She picked the hatchling up- gently, of course- and deposited her in Kiera's lap. the baby would need to learn to trust humans, and the earlier the better. Comfort it, she told her bond. It's scared, and has never seen a human before. Kiera pinched the baby up, holding it like a precious, fragile jewel. Her face held a dreamy smile- the only hatchling Kiera had ever seen was Slip as a baby, and this one fascinated her. She petted it gently. "How beautiful you are..." she whispered. Slip nudged the hatchling with her nose. Do you have a name, little one? she asked.
