An Abundance of Insanity

Recommended Posts

Introduction

The human mind has always been a curious topic. Those who seek to understand it have gone to the most acute of circumstances. Others fear knowledge of the brain; could complete understanding of ourselves destroy us? No matter the side we take, there is always one thing that troubles us: insanity. It turns the greatest of people, the most well-rounded citizens into animals. But what do we do?

Plot

Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center has been up and running for six years as of today, November 8th, 1976. One of the most quickly-expanding hospitals in America, we pride ourselves on providing the utmost care to our patients, and giving them the proper resources in which they may organize their thoughts. Though many of our patients have become very successful people in Maine, recently there has been a flare-up of backfiring cases. Unfortunately, receiving old cases is often difficult on all: the patient, family, and ward.

We are very willing to accept old patients, though, so as long as the family is willing to separate. If the patient consents, we are happy to assist in their further recovery process. That, though, is the tricky part -- getting the patient's consent. There will be times of trial and not everything is as it appears when you are mad. Though we treat our patients as thoroughly as our technologies allow, you may see that your loved one has not fully recovered when they return to you. You and your comrades must complete the healing process for the dispatched patient, or they will fall.

And how hard they fall.

On October 8th, 1976, a multitude of Sunnybrook patients were dispatched on account of their excellent progress. Upon release, most returned home where they lived soundly for a few weeks before their conditions came back to haunt them. Unfortunately, Sunnybrook has not actually equipped them to handle their issues; instead they have hypnotized them into believing everything is alright. But when arguments spark or the news shows terror, the spell is broken, and once again, these people are growing mad. You will play these characters that are the story of Napanee, the small town in Maine that just might go... mad.

Setting

Sunnybrook is located on the outskirts of the small town called Napanee. There are two blocks -- the ward and the rehabilitation center. The ward contains a nurse's station and ten small residential rooms for patients in critical condition. Patients here spend most of their time either in their rooms or in group/individual therapy sessions. They carry out most of their daily activities, such as eating, washing, reading, etc in their dorms. The working psychiatrist for the ward is Dr. Noe Neaves. Sunnybrook's curriculum does not allow guests in this ward, for they fear that reminding patients of their past will interrupt their recovery.

The rehabilitation center is reserved for patients who have made significant progress from their original state and are able to live with other people. There are ten dorms that house two people each, a small cafeteria, washroom, nurse's station, and a garden that the patients maintain. The garden is fenced in, and consists of a gazebo and several neglected flowerbeds that the patients really never tend to. The working therapist for the rehab center is Dr. Virginia Neal. Guests are permitted monthly visits to patients in the rehabilitation center, but only immediate family is allowed.

Napanee is a small, mostly suburban town. The busiest area of the town is the Plaza, which contains a grocery store, gas station, and a few small businesses. Two apartment complexes are located in the immediate vicinity of the Plaza, as well as a motel. The next few miles out are the upper middle-class homes, then come middle class. Napanee's weather is cool and damp and rarely deviates from its usual climate. Sunny days are uncommon.

Rules

1) No powerplaying, godmoding, the usual.

2) Please use proper grammar and absolutely no one-liners. I would like at least one paragraph per character.

3) Max of three characters per player. You can only have one mental patient.

put the word oranges at the end of your form so I can tell you read the rules.

4) You can roleplay any role in the town that will be visited often -- nurse, police officer, citizen, and either of the doctors at Sunnybrook (doctors are first come, first served roles)

5) Try to have some sort of disorder in mind for your character, and a reason for the disorder. Don't just have them be crazy for no reason. Make sure your character has depth, no matter whether they are diagnosed crazy or not.

6) Play by the technology of the time. No internet, no cell phones, etc.

also put the word chocolate before oranges, so I know you read all of them smile.gif

Characters

Username: Lila

Char. Name: Alice

Gender: F

Age: 21

Role/Occupation: Former patient of Sunnybrook

Appearance: Very fair skin and brown-blonde hair with hazel eyes. Her build is slim and she tends to garb dresses that are more fit for a woman living in the 1800s. She has two faint, pink scars on her wrists from where she tried to bleed herself to death, and walks with a reserved demeanor.

Personality: Alice is a quiet personality, but is very opinionated and loves to make a big deal out of petty things. She is ever so sensitive and will take up any opportunity to feel attacked or ostricized. If no one talks to her, she gets lonely, but if she is fraternized with, she feels like a burden. Alice is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and often acts upon her feelings instead of taking the time to calm down.

History: Alice was born to two parents who were once loving, and an older brother. Her birth caused great stress in the household due to increased living expenses and her constant wailing. Often her parents neglected to feed her or change her diaper because they were either working, arguing, or hiding in their room. In such circumstances, her older brother, Jack, took it upon himself to care for her. The two grew close over the years, but when Alice was thirteen, her parents still had not recovered financially and began to take out their stress by beating Jack. This resulted in Jack running away. Despite his attempts to bring Alice with her, Jack couldn't convince his little sister to leave. Their parents began to beat Alice, and even after getting her own place and getting a job at a fast-food joint, the punches and whips of the belt still haunted her. She often questioned her extistence, and tired of thinking so much, attempted to kill herself. Such circumstances led to her treatment at Sunnybrook, which she went through quietly without protest.

Char. Name: Dr. Virginia Neal

Gender: Female

Age: 22

Role/Occupation: Doctor #2

Appearance: Virginia

Personality: Virginia is a therapist who has undergone a lobotomy, so that she may be unbiased when examining a patient. She remembers feeling emotions, such as sadness or joy, but she is now unable to. She can feign having emotions by moving her face according to the situatuion provided, but extremely observant people can easily see through this.

History: Virginia is a psychiatrist for Sunnybrook, not because she wanted to be, but because her mother needed her to. In the small town of Napanee, there wasn't much opportunity to be financially successful. However, close by, there was the clinic. With her mother's health failing, she turned, distraught, to the clinics for help. They offered her a scholorship to a college close by to study psychology, so that they might offer her a job. In a hurry to try to return her life back to normal, she graduated from high school a semester early. She then proceeded to medical school, where 4 years later, she would receive a Degree in Pshychology. She returned to the town of Napanee, and began to work at the clinic. However, being around critical patients for most of her recent life, was causing her mind to deteriorate as well. The other staff saw this, and she was subjected to this procedure almost immediately. Ever since, she has been a shell of her former self, and almost no one notices.

Char. Name: Crystal Varian

Gender: Female

Age: 16

Role/Occupation: MPD Patient

Appearance: [x]

Personality: Crystal has MPD, which is Multiple Personalities Disorder. No one knows what kind of personality she will be. One minute she can be kind and shy, another, she can be crazy and annoying. She doesn't have a set personality per say. However, the more dominant personality is one that is a prankster and likes to annoy people, being the class clown. She laughs at the reactions of annoyed and angered people as well as anyone who gets injured, so long as it isn't serious. She is kind and actually cares about people and loves nature and to draw. She especially sometimes likes to be alone in nature. Be prepared though, this personality is not a set personality.

History: Crystal wasn't exactly born with MPD. She went to school normally until fifth grade, where everything was getting to her. Her family was in the lower class, her father had died, she had very little friends, and though she was an A and B student, she was tired of her life. So, she began to exhibit MPD, almost as if to make up for what was happening in her life. When her mother realized this, she put her into the Sunnybrook facility. When she was deemed okay at age 15 (she has just turned 16), she was let out. However, a few weeks later, she began to realize how crappy her life was again as it had not gotten any better and her MPD started to show again and yet again she was put into the facility. Some of her personalities hate her mother while her dominant one understands the situation.

Username: Whimsical

Char. Name: Annabelle Heron

Gender: Female

Age: 24

Role/Occupation: Patient - Ward

Appearance: Belle

Personality: Annabelle once had a personality, but that small connection to human exsistance is long gone. Annabelle doesn't have much to say normally, other than her usual repetative ramblings, though the medication allows her brief moments of clarity, occasionally allowing a coherent thought to seep through. Stuck in a virtually catatonic state, Annabelle is much like a ghost; quiet and swift, barely noticable. She can often be found wandering around the sections of the ward she's permitted in. When left in her small room, Anna has a tendency to fly into a tizzied rage, though that's not all that triggers it. Many things may set her off, she's not even aware of what caused that switch in her brain; during these moments, all she knows is that she must get out. Obsessed with cleanliness, Anna spends a good amount of time cleaning, organizing, or bathing rather fervently. Anna is haunted by severe hallucinations and nightmares, therefore she barely sleeps, and is not a stranger to scrambling into a corner, screaming as if she were in pain. Annabelle suffers from a sever form of PTSD.

History: Anna was the first, and only born to her parents, whom seemed a very normal, happy couple. Anna was their life, and they did everything to support her. She did well in school, loved her parents, and loved her life; she was just a little... different. Anna always did her best to help her parents, playing the part of the happy, normal teenage girl; she would never want to blemish their reputation. She has always had a strange obsession with death. She studied it, she experimented on dead animals, her thoughts often drifted to the darker side of things. Many would say she was meant to ecome a serial killer, but she was always so afraid to actually hurt a living thing, she could never... Life progressed normally, little of interest came up for her, until the day the police responded to several calls about screaming at Anna's house. Anna was found, covered in blood, shaking and screaming beside the ravaged, limp bodies of her parents. It was so easy to assume she had done it, but the case remains unsolved to this day. Authorities and doctors believe that, by curing her PTSD, the truth may come out. Anna became a patient at Sunnybrook the first year they opened, after being transferred from the small, ill-equipped mental ward of a hospital near-by. Several attempts have been made to re-incorporate Anna into society, constantly resulting in her return.

Hi! I see that no one's given critique to your role-play yet, so I'll be the first. ^^

First off, you don't have much of a plot. The concept sounds very interesting, but what's the plot? What conflict will make the roleplay interesting? Right now it sounds like all the RPers will do is live lives of ordinary people (except for their insane character) around a small town.

You also need more setting: What country/state/province, if this is even on earth (which I'm assuming it is)? How much outdoor space is there for patients, and what restrictions are there on critical patients? Is the yard fenced in, and how much access are guests allowed? You should also state what year this is taking place, and if in the future, give the basic jest at how much technology and knowledge has expanded.

For the character sheet; is there any specific age a character cannot be? Such as a four-year-old or a sixty-year-old? There doesn't have to be, just wondering. wink.gif Also, do you care how much description potential joiners give on appearance? Do three lines satisfy you or do you require paragraphs? Do you accept pictures? What about for personality? History?

Take your time with this; it's a good start and is interesting, it simply needs plot and a little filling. Once you've answered my questions and changed it to your liking post again and I'll further critique it. Have fun =)

I critiqued another of yours? I've done so many I forget! Very cool~ :3

I like how the details you added will help bring RPers together; as you likely know, it's very important that roleplayers have something that connects them so they don't just all roleplay in their own little worlds. ^^

As far as doctors go, if you have any specific character details you had planned to attach to either doctors you should make sure you make those clear. Things like a specific appearance or something that happened in their past, a specific age or anything like that--just make sure you have the details. I'm super tired tonight so I can't do grammar checks until tomorrow, but overall it looks fantastic.

Random question: is there an orphanage in town? o.o

You may also want to put 'authority NPCs' over some of the occupational positions, I.E. a police chief or detective. This way players who do choose such jobs won't feel unorganized... or you could leave such jobs open to the players.

Last thing for now, you may want to put a reminder in the rules that players should play according to technology of the time; it's not necessary, but it'll help solidify the realism of the RP... unless you wanted futuristic technology. xd.png

I'll get to grammar tomorrow, and this looks quite nice. ^^ Have fun. That's an order. /shot

Unfortunately, receiving old cases is often difficult on all the patient, family, and ward.

Add a semi-colon after 'all' or delete 'all'.

Unfortunately, Sunnybrook has not actually equipped them to handle their issues, instead they have hypnotized them into believing everything is alright.

change the comma after "issues" to a semi-colon or period.

You will play these characters that are the story of Napanee, the small town in Maine that just might go...mad.

Add a space after the ellipsis [...] and before "mad".

That's all I can see grammar-wise! Fix that up and I'll start the final run-throughs. =)

I would love to join, just one question; do you accept pictures for the character's appearance? I didn't come across that in the description and whatnot.
