Jay trotted slowly across the barren landscape, watching the snow sparkle, and occasionally looking upwards at the sky. There were two reasons why she did this. One was because she still missed the eagles that had raised her, and the other was because looking upwards for any sign of birds was a way of surviving. Bears and caribou roamed the grasslands, and were as dangerous, if not more, then birds, but birds could attack suddenly and silently from above, ripping your throat out before you knew what was happening. Jay shuddered slightly. Since the days that she began to trust the eagles had taken her in, she had always respected the birds' hunting methods, although she had only really imagined talons ripping into her flesh before the eagles became her family. But now that was reality, and a harsh one at that. Reality was harsh, and the reality that some birds would kill her if they got the chance was one of the harshest for Jay. She wanted to hunt and live with birds again, to run under their shadows as they flew, or watch in the shadows as they fought and hunted while she was too young to hunt for herself, or watch them later just too see them fly down in a steep, controlled dive. But that could never become a possibility again, not now. She was too old. A lone puppy is harmless and pitiful, but a two-year-old wolf can defend itself. No one that didn't like the war would come near her for fear of being attacked, except for her own species. She had tried to stay with them several times, but had always left again, and never settled down. Having a family and a mate were distant dreams, far away from conscious thought in this world where all was fighting and bloodshed, a constant battle to stay alive and end up on top. And Jay hadn't really lived with other wolves all that much, only for a few days, at most a week after the eagles had died, and the memory of her mother and brother were faint, although she might have been able to recognize them, she never thought of them, and she had no memory of her father or the two siblings that had been eaten by hungry predators.

So she walked on, constantly scanning the ground and sky for any food or predators, thinking of what she should do next. She could go back to the wolf pack nearby, or she could continue to wander along, alone, constantly threatened by bird flocks, bear packs, or caribou herds... No, that was to dangerous. One or two she could either beat or get away from, but when there was more her chances were slim. Even two caribou or bears could be a big problem, but birds were different. She knew how most of the attacked and what they would do to chase her, but two strong ones, especially if they didn't fight like eagles, could still get her. Safety in numbers, the eagles would have told her. Eagles generally lived in pairs, but it was still three times better then being alone. She decided that the best thing to do would be to go find the wold pack that lived about a mile from where she was standing, rather then just wander in a random direction. She changed her course slightly, heading towards the west instead of north.

Destiny was in her cave, sleeping. She had been sleeping since the early morning and was still doing that since she didn't feel like getting up just yet. She figured that when she did she would go out and kill a big, fat, juicy caribou to eat or a bird if she was lucky with killing it before it killed her. She always woke up hungry and shortly afterward, went out to hunt for something. She hoped that one day she would do it with someone else that she cared about instead of always by herself, which was the case nowadays.
