Cave Feedback

Recommended Posts

Note: this is not a ranting thread. It is like the forum feedback thread, but for the cave. It's for stating things you think need tweaked or changed (or things you think don't), but don't need/want to create a whole thread for.

For example, something that you aren't enjoying or have a complaint about but don't really have a suggestion on how to fix it could be suggested here.

Thanks purpledragonclaw for the idea. The forum feedback thread does seem to get quite a lot of cave things in it. :3

Please be respectful of others and their opinions.

This topic is going to run on a trial basis. If it gets out of hand and there is too much drama and attacks, it will be closed. ^^

Trust me. I do quite a bit more reading than I do posting, although I don't have a "positive" posts-per-day count from not communicating. I make sure to check the site daily if not more frequently (even while on vacation, like right now). I've written numerous tools that track the dragon populations, and I watch various graphs to make sure things are progressing in the right direction (which they are).

And don't say "well if you're checking on the site and nothing's wrong, then tell us." Because I have done in the past and still do. Apparently no one believes me when I say things are working. They don't want me to say "everything's fine," they want me to confirm their belief that things aren't fine.

I don't really want to go into this here (this isn't the thread for it), but since it's the only reason people are posting in this topic (right now), there's no reason not to: There's also the misconception that saying "nothing's wrong" regarding the ratios means "this is how common the dragon breeds are, and how they'll always be." And that's false. The ratios are, of course, "off." It doesn't take me to tell you that. But why are they so far off? Because, until recently (February-ish), I wasn't willing to actually enforce them. I guess you guys got spoiled with being able to continuously overbreed rares until their populations rival that of commons (which they did), because now that things are being fixed, you can't handle it.

Another important tidbit: Saying "the ratios" have been getting progressively worse since 09 is flat-out false. Why? Because the site only takes into account dragons from the past year. The code doesn't care what happened back in 09, it's been long forgotten. I've said this before, but apparently it's been forgotten too.

I'd say this thread is more like Tiny Little Questions but for S&R.

(Also, your color is green now, Sockster.)

..... Sock's color wasn't green before?? Man I need to get with it!

So, clarification: What kinds of things should go in here? Stuff like "clock in the cave" and "way to sort breeding-list dragons" are Suggestion threads, so... what is small enough that it should go here instead of in Suggestions?

(I like to go back to my roots in this section. :3)

Things that you have a complaint about, but don't really have a suggestion for how to fix, for example, could go in here. o3o

I'm guessing suggestions for "new" features (like a clock) would not go here.

I'm going to go ahead and offer a counter-feedback to some feedback that I anticipate is going to be posted here.

Seems like a lot of people have been raising an issue lately with breeding, specifically as it pertains to metallics. Saying that they can't breed metallic eggs anymore, or that they breed them only very infrequently. Like most users, I have no clue how the ratios really work. But one thing I have noticed is that there are quite a few trade offers lately posted by people with CB metallics, whereas months ago you would hardly see anyone posting a CB metallic in a trade thread (presumably because they didn't have them available to trade). Plus there are probably lots of people who have caught CB metallics lately who didn't even want to trade them so they didn't make a post about them, meaning that there may be many more people out there with CB metallics than we are aware of. I don't know what's really going on but it sorta seems like it's becoming easier to catch CB metallics but harder to breed metallics. If this is in fact true, then all I have to say is...

THANK YOU! PLEASE DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING! biggrin.gif

For a very long time, it seemed like CB metallics were practically non-existent because so many people were breeding metallics (often with unappealing lineages), taking slots away from CBs. I don't know if it's true or not but it seems like the playing field has been made a bit more fair. People who want to catch CB metallics actually stand a fighting chance because the slots aren't all being used up by people breeding them.

Certainly, if what Renorei says is true, I agree with it. More CBs and fewer breds is better imho (of any breed, not just metallics), so long as there's the same number overall.

I'm not as bothered by the breeding of metallics being down, but I do think it's odd that blacks have become as rare as they seem to be now. I'm not sure that this is the way things should be, even if the ratios are working the way that they're intended to. Blacks are still common, right?

Oh, and in addition (ETA):

I'm not sure about this at all, but I feel like breeding is depressed when breeding a common to a rare -- like it seems like you're unlikely to get ANYTHING out of a pairing with a stripe, even if you're mating a waterwalker to it. However, I recognize that this is just anecdata.

The problem there is, there is a huge part of the DC membership that are breeders, and prefer to breed gold eggs then catch them in the cave. If gold eggs can't be bred much at all anymore, but CBs will become more abudant, that's biasing one playstyle over another. Not everyone *wants* more CB golds.

I just want to be able to *breed* a gold. My gold dragons used to do fairly good with that. Not anymore.

And yes, blacks are *supposed* to be common, unless that has changed and we haven't been told. Based on my past few months of breeding, it doesn't feel like they are, though.

I think Blacks were meant to be on the edge of common/uncommon, and TJ has stated that he has only recently put ratios into really strict effect- apparently, up until... some time ago (I may have missed it in his post, but if not, I think a clarification of when the strict ratios came in would be very helpful), he had been rather lax on things and various desirable species were overspawned/bred. This means that now, these breeds will be very rare for quite a while (in cave and in breeding) while things balance themselves out.

Anyway, I really have no issues with the cave as it is. Everything runs great, hunting is enjoyable, and I'm just plain not worked up about what breed is available or not, so no ratio complaints from me.

I was always under the impression that it the ratios were not taken into account when breeding an egg, just the rarity of the breed. That way, it would be far easier to get an egg of a specific breed by breeding, because the number of that breed of egg already in existence wouldn't affect it. I figure the changes have resulted in it becoming harder to breed an egg than it was before, but not necessarily harder to breed an egg to catch a CB one.

I don't think this thing I want really deserves its own topic, so imma post it here.

Can we please have a setting that allows us to view all the biomes on one page? It's understandable if no one shares my opinion, but I miss the days where I could poke my head in the cave and see what's dropping at the moment. It's slightly annoying to have to wait for my computer to refresh six times (seven, counting the AP) in order to see whats going on...

Sorry if the idea is stupid, I just wanted to throw my two cents in the ring. sleep.gif

Where did you get that idea? I just.... I've never thought of that as even being a possibility. I thought *everything* was tied to ratios, because ratios are such a gosh-darn big deal.

Has TJ/Mod actually said that somewhere? *very curious now*

Really? I've seen like one in the cave ever and that was shortly after I joined DC.

I'd like to understand the ratio thing better. I know that TJ is trying to get a balance, but I'm a bit confused about it. I remember not so long ago that everyone was complaining about Blacks blocking the cave as they were abundant in the AP. Now, folks would practically die to get one. Can the ratios be changed? Is there anywhere that shows the ratios?

I'd like to see more success rates for Vampire bites. Right now, a disproportionate number of Bites result in a dead egg.

I did see in a thread (sorry - don't remember which one) where TJ said that he never said that a certain amount of bites would result in deaths, a certain amount in abandoned, and a certain amount in vamps.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask a question that has been bugging me for some time now.

Could you please explain exactly what should be considered normal for breeding?

Is success based on some kind of formula?

Or a percentage? Or what?

Can we please have an idea of what our chances should be when we try breeding?

Not looking for exact numbers, just some ballpark figures.....

rare x rare

rare x holiday

rare x uncommon

rare x common

uncommon x uncommon

uncommon x holiday

uncommon x common

common x common

common x holiday

I'm not asking so I can cheat. I'd just like to know what my chances are in general. Breeding has been so bad lately, I'm not sure what I should change to improve my chances of getting eggs... any eggs.. not just rares, but any eggs.

*points to my last post*

I feel kinda ignored, lol.

Anyways, I don't really mind the breeding failures on my part. I just assume I have terrible luck. tongue.gif

Forcing each person to only see one biome at a time is part of the mechanic. If he was to put them all on a single page, he might as well put us back in a single consolidated cave again... :s

I wouldn't mind if the eggs weren't even clickable on the page. Just something we could click to see what was going on at the given moment.

It makes sneaking onto the site at school so much easier

Considering that the biomes don't seem to work anyway, I'd just as soon go back to a single cave. One blocked cave is less frustrating than 5 blocked caves and 1 empty cave.

Just a suggestion:

Since breeding pixels is so upsetting to members.

Perhaps we should do away with it and just get eggs from the cave. That way we wouldn't have to worry about ratios and members would just enjoy the game.

I personally love to breed my dragons - and gift those I don't need so I wouldn't want to get rid of breeding.

However - I know people are upset about how hard it is to breed now. While I can understand that - it HAS gotten better. I am able to breed things (not as much as I did before - but as TJ said that it was really easy to breed dragons then) Which I agree with. Gold and Silvers and Tinsels are more rare now because people can't breed them. But while 3 weeks ago I was fed up - I am not so much now because breeding seems to be getting better - slowly yes but it is getting better and that is a good thing.
