Bears don't purr. LOL! I was sitting in my office with my office mate (fellow entomologist), and we got into a debate about which cats purred. It turns out that some big cats do have something that could be considered a purr. Anyway, we were looking it up, and someone noted that bears don't purr. Really? I would have never guessed.

Reindeers have a ligament attachment in their hind legs that slides over a bone when they walk or run, which produces a very loud and distinct clicking or popping sound. Nobody knows for sure why that is, but it has possibly appeared as a mean to keep the herd together in darkness and mist.

To follow up on Raptor's bit about angler fish males, in some species, the male actually attaches himself to the female and sort of dissolves into her, leaving only his gonads to fertilize her eggs.

Wait what? The kangaroo one makes no sense, roos hold their tails in the air when they are jumping.

DOES ANYONE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT HAGFISH

 

- Hagfish are also called slime eels! They are not fish, eels, or hags(they are most closely related to lampreys), but the slime part is very accurate!

- They produce a mucus full of fibers from their skin, which clogs up the gills of predator fish that try to eat them! If you make one distressed enough it can turn a bucketful of water into slime in a few minutes!

- They have a skull, but no other bones. In order to escape a predator's grip they will tie themselves into a simple knot, then slide it up their body until the predator is forced to let go. They can also clean themselves of their own slime by doing this! There are videos of this online! It's really cool look it up!!!!

- Hagfish mainly eat dead and sufficiently immobilized fish. When people use dragnets to catch fish in deeper parts of the ocean, sometimes hagfish will get into the net and tunnel through almost all of the fish before it reaches the surface.

 

Hagfish haven't changed for thousands of years and yet they are very effective scavengers with some really cool defense mechanisms! More people should like hagfish because even though they are kind of gross they are also really super cool!!!!!!!
