Art Program Help

Recommended Posts

one question folks. I have GIMP, but I have no idea how to use it. I want to color and shade my sketches on it, but I dont know how. it always ends up like I just splattered color around D:

Do you have anti-alias checked on or off? It should be checked off. You'll find it under one of the pen options. ^^

Oh, and I could use some help on spriting in paint. It seems that when I do it, the pixels are much larger than when others do it. I am using the one pixel pen, but when I am shading and stuff and then zoom out, the lines look too big. It also seems that others have more space then I do when spriting and shading even though I set mine at a 100 pixel max. Can someone help me with that? That is just about the only thing I don't get in paint. Thanks!

Hm, could we perhaps see an example?

I don't understand how people upload pictures made on GIMP cause mine never save as JPEG and so. Help please

Go to File --> Save As. Change the extension type to gif (there's an option when you save to choose your extension type). When it asks if you want to export, click yes, and agree to all the pop ups. Then when you use whatever image hosting site you use, you should be able to find it and have it hosted. :3

Does anyone use paint tool sai on here? I have decent knowledge with using it, and it's a huge help for people who want smoother paintings and artwork, including lineart, etc.

Do you need to buy Paint tool with money if you wanted it?

Anyway, wondering if anyone could answer my question? *Ahem ahem* Alright, here goes nothing.

When spriting a dragon or a picture, you would want the background to be invisable and stuff right? Well how do you make the background invisbale and everything? I use Gimp and I'm not sure if it works the same way as others do.

Any one here use Paint.net? I have a question about the plug-ins. I downloaded pyrochild.2011-10-09 plugins. I copy and pasted them in Paint.net's effects folder and the first day they worked wonderfully. They expanded the things I was able to do. A few days later I went to use Paint.net and those plug-ins no longer worked.

I googled the problem and did what was recommended: right click on a dll in the Paint.net effects folder then clicked on properties, clicked on unblock and clicked apply. I did that to all of them and still none of the plug-ins worked.

So I removed all the dll's in the Paint.net effects folder and went back to pyrochild.2011-10-09 folder in Program Files, copied and pasted them in the Pain.net folder again but they didn't work.

What am I doing wrong? How can I get the plug-ins to work?

Sorry to butt in here, but I'm looking for a program that's free and allows you to shade and line art digital art (not sure what that type of art is called, just like pixel art is called pixel art because it's pixels, this kind of art is anti-aliased). I have Photoshop Elements 4 and Corel Painter Essentials 3 (from a software bundle for my tablet) and also MS Paint since I'm a Windows user.

HERE'S a tutorial on line art to demonstrate what I mean by "line art" and yes, I'm looking for a software that includes the pen tool explained in the tutorial. No, none of the programs that I've mentioned before have that tool, unfortunately.

I've seen Inkscape but that's been iffy so far. I've also seen Paint.NET but I'm not sure about the reviews; also couldn't find any concrete info on the features.

Paint tool SAI I've tried before on the trial version; it worked wonderfully but I didn't get to try the pen tool before it expired. xd.png Anybody have advice?

~~ EDIT:

I use an online program called Iaza ( HERE ) You upload the image, then select "transparency" under a big menu. It's very nice, free, and not sure about transparency on GIMP but you know that the background is transparent when there's a sort of checkered background.

Like you splattered color around? Yeah, shading with GIMP is really tough. I've seen others do it. They start by creating a color palette. They select the base color, the main color they want, then add all the lighter, darker, etc. colors they plan to use around it. Usually it's put off in the white/blank space or on a separate layer. Then they put the base coat on, which is the main color, and layer light tones, dark tones, etc, on top of it. And then you can use a blending tool of some kind to blend it together (blur, smudge, etc.) It's really labor intensive.

I suggest playing around with it a bit and familiarize yourself with what each tool does first. Also, I suggest using layers. I use tons of them, just in case I mess up on something and don't want everything else affected when I erase. It's REALLY nice having each thing on its own layer.

Sunrise, you're talking about Vector art, but I've forgotten what the main program is called. I think it's Adobe...something? Can anyone help me out here? I think that one is bought though, not free.

Draco, I use Gimp, but I've used something similar to vector drawing, and when I wanted a thinner line, I had to make it thinner. Look for some sort of tool or option in a menu talking about thickness, pixels, lines, etc. Something that will allow you to change from default points to 1 or 2.

Now, I have a question. Does anyone have a good metal tutorial? Not the dragon, just general metallic effects like swords and stuff. Please PM me with your response; I'm going to bed for the night.

Good at the technical details of Photoshop Elements, and can show you everything from borders to flavor text.

send me a PM if you want any help -- also, I know how to use GIMP.

And for anyone struggling with lines, I would really recommend a tablet.

I specialize in Paint Tool SAI.

I'm going to school for graphic design so I use a number of programs, if anyone ever needs help. I can help with everything from photo manipulations to book covers to movie posters to birthday/christmas/valentine/etc cards to...well, almost anything else you can think of X'D I've been expanding on what I can do lately so I've been learning how to do a whole bunch of fun stuff.

I've been using Photoshop (CS5 and 6) for years, aaaand I'm very familiar now with Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Indesign. I used to use GIMP so I can also probably answer a lot about that program as well.

I also love graphic design discussions (like, LOVE, because none of my "real life" friends or family have any interest in it) so feel free to message me/add me to msn or aim if you just want to talk about graphic design stuff :3

Yes--GIMP is a great one smile.gif Make sure to use the pencil tool, and to turn anti-aliasing and feather edges off on all select tools, as well as set select tools' thresholds to 0.

Hello my wonderful spriters.

Hmm let's see, the last time i sprited was..... a good year or so ago. *points to siggy*. Yes, those were all made by me, amateurish as they are.

Anyway, I'd love to pick up spriting again. Only problem is, I have completely forgotten how to set up gimp. Yes, I know that the main process roughly goes like this:

- upload sketch on gimp

- line sketch

- color

- shade

Could someone kindly please give me a step-by-step instruction on how to set up the dimensions and whatnot? The... techy stuff, I'd call it.

Thank you so much in advance, help would seriously be appreciated.

EDIT: Hmm, i have photoshop too, but I've always worked on my sprites using gimp. Photoshop gives me a headache.

Oh, actually, never mind. I found out myself. ^^

Hello.

I am extremely interested in doing art for dragon cave, but have no idea where to go from there. dry.gif

I have a semi broken 2009 mac mountain lion, so I don't even know an art program. If anyone can show me one that would be great.

If you're looking for a program for spriting (which I assume you are), then there's this great little program called iPaintX on the App Store which is like Microsoft Paint for a Mac... only better IMO. I've never tried to upload a sketch, since every time I've tried spriting I've simply drawn the sketch straight on the program itself, but I think there is a way to do it.

I've heard Paint.net is a good spriting program (online and free) if you can't access the App Store for some reason. Hope this helped!

I really want to learn how to animate things but I can't seem to find a good program. I've tried Flash CS5.5 but it's not really working out for me. Any suggestions?

Also, how would you recommend I go about lip-syncing? It's hard to make my characters actually look like they're saying their lines.

And what technique would you suggest for shading on Paint Tool Sai? I use the airbrush and color parts black before changing the opacity and using the blur tool to soften the edges. I don't like the effect that much as it looks too dim.
