Posted September 22, 2016 I don't think we will have trouble acclimating -- as long as there is some option that is easy on the eyes! That is the biggest complaint I am seeing about the new one and it is a serious issue for those with any sort of vision problem or sensitive eyes. Exactly. As long as there is a boring basic default option available ! Thank you. But if you are staying with IPB - PLEASE look into (and adapt in your cunning ways ! - see under strikethrough ) their messaging system. "Conversations" that look like the worst side of gmail are VILE - and the facility to download a load at once is SO useful, to make sure we don't lose track of vital trades. I think I can live with pretty much anything else - even the facebook kind of look they have been developing... @Amaterasu-sama and natayah - TJ has just said there will be the IBP basic one - which is much like the current blue one but without the eggs and scrolls, I imagine. He is saying it will be like all the other forums I visit - his skin or the striped out version that software does on all forum sites I've ever visited. He just won't have to design it specially or maintain it when he changes something. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 (edited) As long as my eyes don't die and I get a major headache after just 5 minutes then i am fine with any changes that are made, but for me personally and I am definitely a minority considering how unique my vision issues are with seeing black and white completely in one eye and color in the other. Darker layouts are personally better for me, too much white and it hurts my head a lot. Edited September 22, 2016 by beautifuldragon5000 Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 All the comments are starting to sound repetitive.. and TJ has already said that a default version will be available when we get the upgrade. So upgrade already so we can start commenting on the NEW forum. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 I know that many more people are asking for the blue variant, but please also consider having a lighter colored/spring variant as well. I use the spring layout now because the green is what is easiest on my eyes. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 It would be great to have the tiny scrolls and the burnt scrolls and the eggs also in the new forum and the eggs for the forum levels (if we still will have forum levels). I am sure i wil not the only who will miss these icons who gives this forum its unique Dragon Cave feeling and made us feel at home. I am looking forward to changes but please keep these awesome icons. In my eyes these icons are part of the sould and heart of this forum the other part are we all together, users and team. And as you stated in the first post it is time for an update. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 (edited) So we will for sure have to say goodbye to the scrolls on each topic, and the little eggs on each subthread? That's going to make my using the forum more difficult... I switched back to an older forum skin not because I couldn't handle the new one but because I couldn't tell, most of the time, which topics had new replies. Also it just looks so.....sterile. Um..... I can't seem to find your missing eggs......? I just compared the two pages, side by side.... For me, the Forums and sub-forums with new replies still turn into red eggs, with the ones with no new are dull red, the exact same colors as before. For the individual threads, there's a blue arrow instead of the red one, but its in the exact same place (just different color). As for the scrolls, we have stars and paperclips now. Maybe TJ could replace the stars and paperclips with the scrolls? That way they are more intuitive. But they serve the exact same purpose.... even if they are somewhat more obscure. Actually.... TJ, could you replace the (non-intuitive) stars and paperclips with the (intuitive) scrolls? Cheers! C4. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 I have fiddled with my computer settings to try to make this new forum layout palatable. I have discovered there is a texture to the background at Silvi's lair that I hadn't noticed before. But the forums here are still uncomfortably glaring bright. It was hard to just read the new posts in this thread before replying and made me want to run away. I do find it not so amusingly ironic that a game with a medieval setting is worried about a modern look to the forum. The tan of the scrolls in game is what I find best as background color. I do wish you would consider the suggestion one person made in the announcement thread of going with a parchment look. To me that makes the difference in darkness between right and left painting borders tie together. The difference in tints/colors between posts in a thread is so minimal I have to consciously look to even find it. Still looks like one run on page to me as I now tend to have signatures turned off (overly flashing stuff is just irritating). I wonder if this isn't somewhat prompted by the thread about what to do to bring people back to the forums. In my case this forum update is pushing me away. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 22, 2016 (edited) Here's the parchment BG suggestion. I copypasted the whole post in case anyone wants to add to it. Cleaned up spelling errors, too. Pros Sleeker Links to main site Cons Text is too thin Text looks grey on white bits, blue text on white has too little contrast, silver text on black is to low contrast White background too bright against black/dark red Background transition between black and white VERY distracting - my eyes want to track it instead of the pale text Egg is too desaturated, hard to notice color fade Don't think it matches site - the background text would match more if the same font and point was used for text and backgroind was tan/parchment Icons at top for contacts, etc don't have DC ambience (and are distracting), paperclips and stars don't match the DC feel Checkmarks and bolding are much too easy to overlook when you have to look straight at things to see them Edited September 22, 2016 by Dusky_Flareon Share this post Link to post

Maybe it's my computer then, and I have never figured out how to use screencaps with my particular computer, but for me, when looking at the main page with the new layout has only the 'main' topics with eggs -- News, Suggestions/Requests, Help, Site Discussion, etc -- have eggs, but the subthreads -- Breeding, Trading, Dragon Requests, etc -- do not. They have nothing, at all. I'm not sure what blue/red arrow you're talking about (the arrow that lets you go back to the top? Idk) but the subthreads only turn bold to me. I can maybe fiddle around and maybe I'm blocking something... I'll have to see. ETA: I think I see what you mean, since I see them after clicking a topic like Site Discussion. Then all the subthreads have eggs, yes, but not when looking at the main/front page. But tbh as much as I would like the subthreads to have something, that's not such a big deal as the scrolls on the individual topics being gone. I have a hard time reading the bolded text as bold sometimes, so a much more obvious thing indicating new replies would be greatly appreciated...like keeping the scrolls on the new forum layout. I see what you mean, now. And yea, it replaced the eggs with bold font for sub-topics with new replies. Though the bold font doesn't show up very well..... :/ Perhaps that's something else TJ could add back in? Cheers! C4. Share this post Link to post
Posted September 25, 2016 Going to add my voice to the fact that the new theme is far too bright, and actually physically straining and borderline painful to look at (would probably cause a headache on a longer stay). Me with my eyes - I cannot use it "as is". Share this post Link to post
Posted October 3, 2016 There's an embedded IRC chat on this page of the forum. But it's very short. Too short to be able to use it properly. It's awesome that it's there. However, I don't use it due to its unfortunate size. If its height were raised to a useable level I'd definitely use it much more. Share this post Link to post

You can simply join the chat by going to http://irc.technoized.com/ It takes up the whole window when its on its own tab. Pick a name and put dc where it says channel. It is pretty cool that its sort of built in. Share this post Link to post

It's coded to always fill the full height of your screen minus the chat info box at the top. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 3, 2016 Minus the forum header at the top too, it looks like. Which might be the problem. On my screen, which is a large laptop with good resolution, the chat box has maybe a little more than half. On a screen with worse resolution or a smaller size or someone with bad eyesight that has things zoomed in I can imagine the IRC screen only being allotted a third or a quarter of the entire screen or maybe even less, which wouldn't be enough to chat with. Posted October 4, 2016 That's what I thought it should do. But that doesn't happen on my computer (probably because it's really old). It should work in any version of FF, Chrome, or Safari released in the past three years, IE9+, etc. I'd be surprised (and scared, since that means you're definitely using something with known security vulnerabilities) if your browser is older than that. Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) I am unable to replicate the problem of chat not opening to full height even on mobile, which usually hates IRC. I am using latest version of chrome and chat opens with full page height for me. Edited October 4, 2016 by Amaterasu-sama Share this post Link to post
Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) http://i65.tinypic.com/2zit3ch.png I use IE admittedly, which wasn't on your list. Not sure which version, other than not 10, since it keeps asking me to upgrade. Firefox is better, and at least read-able. but is still only about half the screen height. Not that I even knew this page existed before today. I always used the outside link on the few times I got on chat. @ cyradis4 yep, that's about what mine looks in firefox. Lots of space above and some below. Posted October 4, 2016 Will there be a blue/winter and green+pink/spring version of the new style? If this has already been answered, link me. Waiting. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) Waiting. I THOUGHT TJ said that the alternatives were to be retired in the end and the only alternative would be the invision default (as in vanilla plain, lovely and dull !) ETA from the announcement thread: The default forum skin for all users has been updated to this design. Users who prefer the old default may still select it from the settings page, but any of the non-default layouts are going to receive limited support, and will be going away in the case of an eventual forum upgrade.
