She was like a stubborn puppy on speed. For a fox, she was super affectionate, though.

Living with a fox means a lot of sacrifice and compromise. The fox comes first, at least for the first year you have it, and especially the first six months. I got Fizz when she was five weeks old, and didn't sleep a full night until she was completely weaned. The entire time I had her, I didn't sleep past 8am, ever. She learned very quickly to bite my legs to get me up. Fox are wicked smart, and will learn how to get what they want. On the other side, she was super fun to play with and she was always up for playing. Loved belly rubs. Nothing could beat coming home to a super excited fox. They are A LOT of work, but to me, totally worth it.

Fizz wasn't too destructive, but yes, fox are in general very destructive pets. Reds and arctics mark with urine, and will happily dig up your flooring. I chose grays because they mark by rubbing(no smell humans can detect) and have no instinct to dig, since they are climbers. Usually, larger species like those are eventually moved to an outdoor enclosure once old enough(after maturity). most states foxes are legal in require one anyway to get your permit. Fennecs are the only ones that don't benefit from being outdoors, due to their small size.

I got Fizz from a breeder in Ohio, and she was shipped down to me in Florida. There are quite a few breeders in Ohio and Indiana, actually.

Once I move away from home, I'd like to get a red.

Sorry, really wordy! I just love to talk about foxes! laugh.gif

That's really cool! I think they might be illegal to own where I live(Canada), which is a shame, they seem pretty neat. How long do they normally live for? Do you walk them like a normal dog?

Specific classes that an individual must sit through in order to own a certain animal(I actually like that idea)?

I meant this one. x3 Florida's system does sound pretty well thought out and reasonable!

Sorry about Fizzgig. What an adorable little thing. =(

Thank you! It depends where you live in Canada, many places allow them, the catch is that you can't import them for pet purposes and there are no Canadian breeders I know of. Fur farms can't sell foxes as pets, either. I don;t know of anyone that's successfully gotten through all the red tape in Canada. The only exception for importing I know of is Canadian residents that live abroad for awhile being allowed to bring their pet fox back, like a one time deal kind of thing.

Life expectancy in captivity is anywhere from 12-15 years, perhaps more. Like small dogs.

Walking is a mixed bag with foxes. Some like it, some don't. It mostly involves being pulled behind an excited fox, I only know of one or two foxes that heel on command. You can walk them, but you have to take extra precautions. Super secure harness to prevent an escape(most well trained foxes treat escape as a kind of game, not really a bid for freedom), an area where you won't be bumping into other people walking their dogs, preventing people from just walking up and petting your fox(one reported bite, and the fox is down for rabies testing).

I like our way of handling exotics too, but it's also really important here, since so many exotic pets port here. The volume of exotics that pass through the port in Miami is huge.

I'd love classes to get your permit, that you would have to pay out of pocket for. Length and cost vary on what animal it is.

Thank you, she was a special little girl.

I adore cats - in fact, I'm currently typing with my beautiful silver tabby cat Buddy sat on my lap (he competes for space with my laptop!) My parents don't like him much, and he can be very irritating, but I wouldn't swap him for anything. People who say only dogs are loyal should see Buddy - he's always curled up on my lap or waiting for me in my bedroom when I come home from school. I have a crossbred dog, Dickens, too, although Buddy doesn't like him much because Dickens' idea of playing is to jump on the hapless cat and lick his face! Tabby is my favourite colour of cat, especially if they have green eyes, because they are so beautifully camouflaged - they remind me of wildcats. I love other kinds of wild cats too, especially Bengal Tigers and Iberian Lynxes. Cats are the epitome of perfectly adapted, powerful predators and it's a real shame most are endangered now...

*sniffles* I'm allergic to cats. sad.gif I really wish I wasn't because they're the cutest things. <3 But not as cute as my puppies.

Erica, your kitties are so cute! They look very cheeky. tongue.gif

OMG, another fetching kitty? Felix is a HUGE talker and LOVES to fetch, if you tell him to go get "greenie" he will bolt to get it and will fetch for hours. He also knows how to sit, "speak" and "play dead".

laugh.gif i didn't know there were others. i'll ask him where his mouse is and thats when he'll go get it. or if i'm in the middle of somethign and he feels i need to play fetch *nods* cause playing fetch with him is much more important than folding cothes or doing homework or playing minecraft xd.png

he also likes to bat the mice under various pieces of furnature and spend a few minutes reachign under to make sure its good and under there then will sit and look at me. *smh*

o.0 how did you get him to play dead. i so want to teach that one to Woody. CJ knows how, i'll pretend to shoot him with a fingr gun and will say Bang. he hasn't caught on to staying down yet though laugh.gif

Felix does this too. Getting read yin the morning involves fetch, homework involves fetch. It's a riot.

Felix totally purposely puts his toys under the stove, dryer and couch and then screams for them. its totally another game of how far can I push it under before I can't get it... Silly boy.

I use a clicker to train my cats, believe it or not. It was a long process of getting him to first lay down then roll over then lay on his back, then to respond to the "play dead" command. He's too smart for his own fur somedays.

clickers are awesome! both of my dogs are clicker trained but the cat just laughed at me and my attempts. the dogs love the clicker though, i pull it out and put it on they get all excited.

woody's new thing is, he's decided whenever the dogs coem back inside form doing their business, he should now get a treat as well. thsi is ofcourse, after sitting the entire time in the door watching and meowing.

thanks for the tips on the "play dead" i'll have to work with him on that *nods*

funny thing about the cat though, he's the reason why my dogs know how to speak on command xd.png otherwise they woudl have never put two and two together.

maybe this is a game that only fetchers play? our entertainment center has abotu an inch worth of space at the bottom. woody will chase his mouse to this and bat the mouse in one end and out the other, playing catch with himself in a way. atleast until he bats it the wrong angle.

i walked in the bed room the other night and there he was, shoulder deep under the dresser with one paw trying to get a mouse. had to tell him "sorry buddy its lost" that thing is too much for me to move. so after glaring at me (cause its totlaly my fault its under there) he walked off to go get one of the other 30 around the house.

he also like to play "open the shower door on mommy and sit on the toilet and meow at her". another of his fav games is while i'm making the bed, he likes to "help" flatten the sheets down and help chase the air bubbles out

so does anyone have any funny/embarrasing stories about your fur babies??

i have 3 for my woodrow.

best one though is the bath tub.one thing Woody would do as a young cat, would be to jump in the bath tub and roll around. one day Bubba (my fiancee) left water filled in the bath tub. and yes, you guessed it, not even looking befor he leaps in Woody dives head first into the water. then proceeds to wig out and yowl. after half a minute of jumping around he finally gets out, soaking wet and glares at me. i laughed the entire time i was dryign him off.

then there was the time Bubba and i decided to mess with him. we decided to switch sides in bed just to see what happened. i lay on the right side, near the door, so woody like to curl at my side so he can watch the hallway as well as be nice and snuggled next to his momma. so here it is, about 10pm in a dark bedroom and we've switched sides. woody jumps up and goes still; he realizes that the head on that pillow isn't mine and just freezes, like "what the hell is this?!" so he tried layng in his normal spot, but i guess it wasn't comfy enough. abotu 5 mins he walks over bubba to wlk ontop of me and lay on my chest. then he tries his normal spot at my side, which just doesn't do cause he can't watch the hallway. so he tries up above my head, but againthis wont do because bubbas pillows are obstructing his view and he then expresses his discontent by smacking me in the face with his tail. so laughing we get int he correct spot and woody jumps back up 5 mins after we're settled to lay on my chest and shove his nose to mine, like he's saying "An dis is where you better sleep"

the next good story i have on him is one day i was taking a shower and he was playign the normal "open he shower door on mommy" game. he keeps meowing at me so i open the door and block the water with my body and ask him what. he jumps off the toilet and walks over to the opening and stick his head in. i tell him "come on then" and he just waltz right into the shower with me. so laughing, i close the door. its at this point, when the water hits him, that he realizes he doens't want to be in the shower with me, but by then its too late cause i'm not letting a soaking wet cat run through my house xd.png so i spent my shower istening to the pleading and protesting yowls of an indignent cat who ended up getting abath out of the deal cause i had bubba bring me his shampoo.

I honestly can't remember a single period in my life where I didn't have cats. This is my pretty boy:

He's such a momma's boy and a perfect little alarm clock. He wakes me up every morning at seven on the dot and gets really confused on the weekends when I can sleep in. Eventually he just gives up and curls up behind my knees.

Fff, soo many pretty kitties. ;3;

My baby, Prince.

It's an older image, but he doesn't look much different save that his eyes now have that gorgeous gooseberry sheen. <3 He's almost a year old (on March 15th) and if you're familiar with the gorgeous Egyptian Mau breed, you'll know that these little things are SO much heavier than they look. >-> He's currently, at least, 5 pounds now, and that's all muscle.

Last week I wanted him to experience the park, so I put him in his fancy carrier and walked about 1 mile and a half to the place(and back!) , carrying him. My shoulders are still hurting from that, but it was worth it to see how curious and excited he was.

The only pets I've had are 4 fish that all swam into the filter at some point.

So, uh, yeah... I really like shredded fish remains as pets. They're quite easy to take care of. :3

Tinypic finally worked for me! Here's my horses: (Sorry, just head pics. I didn't have full-body shots except for ones with me riding.)

Sweetie: My piebald Tennessee Walker. She's my personal riding horse; I adopted her from the rescue I volunteer at and I trained her.

Karena: My mom's chestnut Quarter Horse, who was from a national equine rescue.

Isis: A bay Arabian, who was severely neglected when we got her. You could see every inch of her ribs and spine, and her hooves were grown out as long as tennis shoes. She couldn't walk. My family and I nursed her back to health, and now she's healthy and happy.

Prince: I didn't have a pic of just Prince, so here's one of him and Sweetie. Prince is the fleabitten grey Quarter Horse; he's my sister's riding horse.

Jaydee: I swear, that isn't a buffalo. Jaydee is some sort of pony. He was my first horse, and now he's about 30 years old. He's not in great shape, but we're making life comfortable for him until it's time for him to leave us. He's a sweet boy, and such a trooper.

And this is Casino. He was my sister's first horse, but he died a tragic death a year ago. He had been recovering from a respiratory infection, but one morning I went out to the pasture and found him standing unable to move. He was in great pain, and Karena (the leader) was keeping the other horses away from him. We got him into a trailer with great difficulty, and took him to the vet. Once there, he fell and went into complete paralysis with terror in his eyes. He was struggling to breath- his respiratory system was paralyzing too. The vet promptly put him down- there was nothing we could do and he was in agony.

An autopsy revealed that the infection had spread into his brain and attacked his nervous system. It was a rare freak of nature, and the loss was hard on us.
