Cats

Recommended Posts

I have 5 cats and a dog. However, that number is going down to 4 cats after tonight.

Opal: The oldest cat at 20 years old. She's always been a nice cat. She likes to hang out in my mom's study a lot, though lately my mom tries to keep her out of there because she might have a hairball or something. Opal is well known for her squawking. She normally would squawk when she wants food and she would get really annoying sometimes. We are putting her down tonight because she hasn't been doing so well lately, she's not eating.

Tiger: Our second oldest cat, I think he's 9? Anyway, he's a tiger alright. He's very adorable and sweet, but out of nowhere he will scratch or bite. He also likes cheese, ice cream, and begs me for milk whenever I have my cereal in the morning. He used to harass Opal and our other cat Amber, until Amber decided to start harassing him, then he became a total mouse and sometimes has to be escorted to the potty.

Curly: We got him when he was a kitten, and my was he an adorable kitten! He is fat and very furry. He likes to play with his food. He doesn't like to be touched often, but he loves attention from daddy. He gets startled easily and doesn't like my room. He is soo cute though.

Carol Lynn: We got her as part of a 2 for 1 deal with Amber. She likes to eat too much so we keep her on a diet and she is "starving" when she wants food. She has this cute little squeak when you pet her or when she wants food. She likes to be fiesty and she likes to go after her tail sometimes. She's sweet too when she wants to be.

Amber: Beautiful, sweet orange kitty. I think two summers ago she ran outside but we got her back almost immediately, and then last summer she ran out and we thought she was gone. We didn't see her for about a week. One day, after putting up posters around the neighborhood for her, I was near the backyard when I heard a cry - it was Amber. My boyfriend (who was an ex at the time) helped me out and got her safely. We were so relieved to have her back. She is a rather sweet kitty and loves attention but she is very flippy and runs around a lot and gets startled easily!

Banjo: Our dog, who has epilepsy. He takes meds for his epilepsy. Recently, he had a few seizures for the first time in quite a while. He's okay now though. Banjo is a very greedy and silly dog. He also has separation anxiety, he gets upset whenever any of us leaves him in the car or in the cage, and when he sees us again he goes nuts! You should see him when we let him out of the cage after being out, he runs around like crazy like a happy dog! He also absolutely LOVES other dogs.

It's an all-encompassing thread so I'll let out a little mini-rant here.

It kind of ticks me off that people will let their pets ruin the house or apartment they're renting and then pack up and leave, leaving the landlord to clean up their mess and slap a no pets rule on their properties. After a week of looking around for an apartment, I've found two that will allow pets out of the twenty or so I looked at, and they were hesitant to take my cat and are making me have a security deposit.

And after looking at all these apartments, I know why. Literally half of them reeked of some sort of urine, most cat urine. A few had walls damaged from scratches and carpet ripped up in places, and some even had poop stains on the carpets. Take care of your animals, people! GAH!

It just.... really aggravates me that people think it's okay to let their creatures do that just cause it's not their house.

You mean you don't normally have to make deposits in the US? Pretty much everywhere you rent here requires a deposit, tis just a fact of life, and there's normally a contractual requirement to have a professional cleaner in when you leave if they allow you to keep pets.

My family has never rented anywhere that didn't require a security deposit regardless of the pet status. It might be different region to region and state to state though, the US is huge.

ETA to be on topic more:

It's the normal security deposit PLUS the pet deposit, meaning I'm paying more of a security deposit (almost TWICE) because I have a cat =/ That's why I'm fussing that if people took care of their animals, I wouldn't have such a huge up front cost.

Edit: I know about the professional cleaner, that happens here with or without pets. The security deposit, that's part of life. An additional one that's almost the size of the normal deposit? That's what I'm kind of irritated about, that people took such bad care of their pets that landlords are charging people ridiculous amounts of money in case they get another bad one.

There are more chickens than that, but they're not worth it. xd.png

This is Rev. I fostered him until a week ago, at which time he was old enough to be put up for adoption. He's at the Iowa City/Coralville Animal Care and Adoption Center if anyone wants a cute, playful but sweet kitteh!

I am now fostering Nadine, who is currently ill and is taking meds. Until she's well, she needs be quarantined from the other cats, hence the reason she's now in foster care.

And a different tank with some boring tetra and a small loach in it. :3

I live in a small apartment with a tall roommate! But I really love pets and the beetles are easy to take care of. They live a long time and are easy to grow from larva. Good times!

Hrm... I really want to get a bengal, but I'm not sure if he breed would go well with the cat I already have. My Dango-kitty is the priority here, so I need to find a breed that would go smoothly with him...

I have three cats. One of them is named Merlin, and he is the sweetest kitten ever. However, when he stretches out, he about two and a half feet long. He is only a year and a half old. I'll tell you about Rosco and Sala (no typo with Sala's name) in a later post.

I would love to have a bengal. We were very close to getting a purebred bengal kitten instead of the Siamese we ended up bringing home (the kitten was posted on craigslist, ahaha), but the guy was a breeder and asked a thousand dollars for him.

o ___o

So, uh, we didn't get him. >>

However, since I have to rehome my older cat now, one of my moms is like, "Now we have to get another kitten so that this kitten doesn't grow up to dislike other cats."

>< What about a Bengal/Siamese mix? Too much? xd.png

That price is normal. Expect any purebred cat to be expensive.

My new landlords are making an exception on my lease to allow me to bring my Saffron <3 I'd love to either foster or get another cat so that she won't be stressed or lonely by herself, but it's no deal. She's bonded so much with my parents' dog that I'm afraid of what may happen when they're separated.

Hopefully if I can prove to them that Saff is a good cat and that I'm a good cat owner, they'll let me take in another that matches her personality.

That probably rules out siamese, orientals and burmese as well then. I've known all of those breeds have trouble with other cats. Or, actualy, I should say I've known other cats have trouble with those breeds. We've often joked that siamese don't speak cat, and the average moggy just doesn't understand what this thing that has arrived in the house is.

Best thing to do is to come up with a list of what's most important to you, and put it in order from most important down to least. I can probably come up with some suggestions once I know everything your looking for in a cat smile.gif

That's about what a breeder will charge for their kttens, yes. Getting a properly bred kitten is every bit as expensive as getting a properly bred dog. A chances are if you're not being charged that it's either 1) a back yard breeder or 2) not a proper pedigree in the first place.

Why are you rehoming your older cat?
