Posted June 15, 2011 Probably doesn't help you guys that I go to bed early by my time anyway. I tend to be in bed at 9pm GMT because both of us have very early starts in the morning. *shrugs* You probably don't even need to bother testing him unless a) the shelter say's he's been a stray or you're planning on getting another cat. There can be a slight risk to not vaccinating if your cat ever escapes the house and goes missing, so you'd need to make a judgement call on how likely that is (for example - do you have small kids coming over that might not realise they can't let hte cat out kinda thing). If you think it's unlikely the cat will ever get out to go roaming then the reason for not vaccinating is the cat's stress levels - they don't like going to the vet. They don't like being in the car. They don't like the waiting room. And they certainly don't like being stuck full of needles. It's quite a yearly stress-fest (plus expensive) to keep a cat vaccinated. Which is why I'd always say if they're indoor, don't bother. From what I've heard from my vets, indoor cats should not be vaccinated. Diligence is needed if you keep a strictly indoor cat, yes, but that's simply part of keeping an indoor cat. But anyways, my first point, my vet has told us several times that they recommend indoor cats not having vaccinations because it increases the likely hood of developing tumors and cancers. That's why we don't get our kitties vaccinated. C: Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 The thing about cats is that they're frickin awesome. And mine is fat. Which is just all the better. Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 Thanks. They are much older now. Tiger has gotten a bit on the chubby side. Boots is still the smallest, and still has the fluffiest cheeks. I sleep with her sometimes. Under the covers, too. She loves it. AWW! Thats just sounds so cute. Ugh, now I'm so jealous. I want a cat! Hopefully I will get one one day, and I wont be jealous anymore. Posted June 15, 2011 My cat is vaccinated. But we have dogs that are outside a lot, and they haven't had their yearlies yet. So, it is somewhat reasonable. But it's nice to know she's gonna have tumors D: lol. Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 It'd be against the law here to have my cat be fully unvaccinated. Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 Oh, that too, cats here need to be vaccinated to be registered. Unregistered cats are technically strays. Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 But it's nice to know she's gonna have tumors D: lol. That's a higher risk, not a guarantee. I've known an unvaccinated cat that also developed cancer. Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 I think the only vaccine we've ever gotten our cats was a Rabies shot, but we stretch that out as far as possible in terms of time x3 Anyways, speaking of tumors/cancers- Okay, so my first cat, who was this giant black lovable mass, lived about seventeen years before developing an aggressive mouth cancer. We had to put her down before the tumor either broke her jaw or suffocated her, and it all went down within the period of about a week. Anyways, once Ebony was gone, about three months later my mom and I brought home a new cat. We had Lyra for about four or five months before we noticed something on her upper lip. When we took her to the vet, he checked it out and said, "Oh, it's just swollen from a puncture wound. Must have bit herself when she gets stressed out" and gave us a cream to rub into the spot. Well, that didn't help. In fact, it only got bigger and was painful for her to eat. After a little while, we took her in and got the spot removed- only to find that the growth was, indeed, cancer. Now, it's not the same that Ebony had, and is much less aggressive. Actually, since we got it taken off last year (November, methinks?), there has been no sign of its return, even though the doc wasn't able to take off the entire area around the spot. We weren't able to do any form of radiation either due to the location. Anyways, the vet told us it was very strange for such a young cat (when we found she got it, she was two years old) to get cancer. Any thoughts as to why this might have happened? (Not to mention, extremely ironic...) Share this post Link to post

Any thoughts as to why this might have happened? (Not to mention, extremely ironic...) There's a kind of cancer in cats that starts to develop when they stop producing growth hormones - or in other words, when the cat stops growing the cancer starts! Quite unusual for it to be in the lip, though. That one normally crops up in the chest cavity. I've seen it in enough siamese now to suspect it may be geneticaly influenced as well... Posted June 15, 2011 I got 2 kittehs recently, However, this is my favorite cat of all time: Share this post Link to post
Posted June 15, 2011 Really, no Nyan Cat? lol. Widget is addicted to milk rings--you know, those things that hold the top on a container of milk? It's round with nothing in the middle and snaps pretty easily. Well, my sister and I were eating breakfast, and there was a milk ring on the table near an empty chair. So Widget jumps on that chair. She sees the milk ring and puts her paws on the table. We yell no and she gets down, but not before she grabs the milk ring. It was and at the same time. ~Cavey Share this post Link to post

Posted June 16, 2011 So... how do you tell if a cat is pregnant? We just had a little girl show up at our house. Young thing, but still an adult. Her hips and shoulders were thin, and she ate like she hasn't had food in a while, but she's got a big ol' sway-belly, and didn't like me touching it. But since we don't know her we can't really tell if this is different from the norm. Share this post Link to post
Posted June 16, 2011 Best way would be able to take her to the vet. Tikindi might be able to offer better advice because his family breeds Siamese if I am correct. Share this post Link to post

But since we don't know her we can't really tell if this is different from the norm. If she's actualy pregnant the nipples will pink up. As in - they go from being roughly the same colour as the rest of her skin to looking really pink. That said I think it's the kind of thing that can be quite hard to spot if you're not experienced in looking for it. Do check the feel of the belly, though. Flabby fat and skin does not a pregnant cat make. If she's pregnant the belly will still feel relatively firm (like the rest of the cat does), if it's just wasted skin from a once-overwieght cat it'll feel soft and floppy. If that belly isn't feeling soft I suggest taking her to the vets regardless of wether or not she's pinked up. Hm, I wonder if I should start worrying about her chest. She's a Snowshoe, so she has the Siamese genetics.... Oh it's not just in siamese. At least not as far as I know. But because they're the ones I see the most of those are that cat's I've seen it in. Sorry, should have made the clearer. If you are worried you can always get the vet to do an X-ray. One of ours had it (a long time before anyone suspected there might be a genetic predisposition to it, I might add) and we didn't notice anything wrong until she was in labour with her first litter. By that time the tumour in her chest was the size of my first two fingers. Naturaly she went immediately into cheamo, and we had to hand-raise the kittens. She survived, and had several very happy years with us before she relapsed. Share this post Link to post

Posted June 16, 2011 I am thinking of getting either a maine coon or a ragdoll. What do folk here think? Share this post Link to post
Posted June 16, 2011 Tiki: Ah, okay. I think I'll start checking her chest anyways, just to be safe. If it is that kind of cancer (because I honestly wouldn't know what other kind, and the vet was a bit baffled as well), I want to make sure it hasn't gone to any other part of her body. She's been acting normal, though, so I doubt the tumor has spread anywhere. Tehe, the kitten we adopted a few weeks ago is a Siamese mix. I'm starting to think one of her parents might have been a Tortie of some sort, because on her Lilac Point markings, there is a mottled pattern. On her ear, the mottled pattern in the lighter splotches looks like its tinged orange, or something. x3 She's sitting in my lap right now~ Share this post Link to post
Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Ours are currently NOT HAPPY... see the fam is doing some remodeling in the kitchen, including working on the floor and we recently sanded the wood in there. So to keep it clean ( no fuzzy little kitteh paws walkin on it) we have confined them to the basement for the time being with their water , some bedding and their kitty litter, but they complain about it to no end whenever someon e is in ther with them. We'd never known there was anything wrong with Indy until the Vet had her open for a C-section. Have you got a picture of your new baby? I can probably do an ident if the picture is good enough.
