Posted October 8, 2010 This is inspired by the fact that a hairdresser on Mastermind has the Hannibal Lecter books as her specialist subject- so random, so awesome. I, for one, think these books were really good- tense, entertaining, and sometimes even funny. I liked Starling, even though her romance with Lecter was a tad unlikely. Oh well, she was drugged out of her mind and seeing things, like her dead father. Which was also very, very odd.. She's a tough and capable woman, and I like to see that in a main character of either gender. On the other hand, I always thought his writing style was a little odd. The sentance stucture always threw me a little, but I suppose that's just me. And I thought it was a little tame, too, but that's just compared to some of the modern films and books I've read or seen. What do you think? Say anything you want about any of the characters, events or books that you want- feel free to trash the whole series, but back it up with proof, please. Oh, and try not to ruin it for people who haven't read all of the books. Please put any plot twists or important points in white. Thank you! Share this post Link to post
Posted October 8, 2010 I haven't read the books yet but I've seen some of the movies. o.O Starling is pretty cool in The Silence of the Lambs (been meaning to read that for awhile now...) and I liked Hannibal Rising. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 8, 2010 I haven't seen any of the movies- are they any good? They seem to be a bit gorey and such, but I'm kinda used to that. Doesn't he look rather odd in Hannibal Rising? Share this post Link to post

The movies are great. I didn't think he looked odd. I hope I'm actually talking about the right movie, even...@_@ I liked the one where it showed his backstory, from when he was a little kid and and how he became the monster he is (I THINK that's Hannibal Rising ). And yeah, the movies are kind of gorey but not as much as you'd think. They have a LOT less gore than most movies. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 8, 2010 Yes, it is right- with his artist uncle and his Japanese auntie. And lots of angsty stuffs with eating people... Share this post Link to post
Posted October 8, 2010 Yes, it is right- with his artist uncle and his Japanese auntie. And lots of angsty stuffs with eating people... Oh hey, I did get it right. Yeah, but I didn't like his aunt.. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 10, 2010 She did seem a little... convenient. I haven't read it in a while, but her reaction to everything seems to be "Eh, severed head... Whatevs.". But maybe the Japanese are that unflappable. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2010 That's the one thing I could never figure out. Did Starling go with Lecter out of her own free will or has she been hypontised or something? Rising wasn't as good as the first three books, but I liked it anyway. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 1, 2010 (edited) I've not yet read any Thomas Harris books, though there is a copy of Silence of the Lambs from the library on my nightstand right now, haven't been getting to it just now. Edited November 1, 2010 by lightbird Share this post Link to post
Posted November 2, 2010 His writing style takes a little gettin used to, but I liked them... @Fortune: I agree. Rising was a little... 'bleh' for me. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 3, 2010 Rising felt kinda fanficcy to me. I didn't think much of the movie either. I liked the ending to Hanibal the movie. It was a more Starling like ending. Although a film adaption of the true ending might have explained the book to me better lol. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 5, 2010 Ooh, I love the series! Bot book and movie Sooooo wicked, I love the imagery in the books and the way it involves the reader in some places, and the whole Idea of the Memory Palace. Hannibal was my favorite of the series, didn't really like Hannibal Rising though... Share this post Link to post
Posted November 5, 2010 I've actually heard of real people with Memory Palaces, and I've always wondered how they did it. My minds just a blank black and blue space. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 8, 2010 I don't dare check out my memory palace. There's monsters in there. So I'll stay out here in the garden, with the bunnies and the sunshine if that's okay Share this post Link to post
Posted November 8, 2010 Mine appears to be a small shack with the door falling off... Guarded by a split so inbred it can barely stand up, so why it's a guard dog is beyond me. That's my stupid brain for you. *shrugs* Share this post Link to post
Posted November 10, 2010 I'll have a look... *clank* Stupid low door... Er, let's see now. Books- lots of 'em on rickity shelves. A model of the Discworld floating in the centre. A Persian rug on the dirt floor. Candles everywhere. An empty fireplace... At least it has a telly. My 'tulpas', Iggy and Toa, are in here too. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 10, 2010 D: Anyway, going back on topic... Which version of Red Dragon (as in the movie) did you guys like best? 1986 Manhunter ~ Brain Cox as Dr Lecter or 2002 Red Dragon ~ Anthony Hopkins I personally prefered the 2002 version, because Anthony is so much creepier. Posted November 10, 2010 I haven't seen either- I's only a young 'un. Which one do you recommend? I'm not that squeamish, but my Mum is. *lols* Share this post Link to post
Posted November 10, 2010 I can't really remember how gory they are, but I think 2002 has more blood in it. Could be wrong. Have you seen any of the movies? Share this post Link to post
Posted November 10, 2010 No. I should do, though. Mister Boo: I can look down lady's tops from high places! Oh, be quiet. Jerry was bad enough, and we already have San- who pervs on both! Anyway, I heard Hopkins is a great actor. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 16, 2010 (edited) So, halfway through The Silence of the Lambs, and loving it. So far the book seems creepy in a very good way. Edited November 16, 2010 by lightbird Share this post Link to post
Posted November 18, 2010 I think out of all of the books/movies Silence of the Lambs was my favourite. I like the scene were Lecter escapes. Not because it's bloody, but the cleverness of it. Share this post Link to post
Posted November 18, 2010 Yeah- "I wearz yur faec- pwned! LOLZ!" *shiftyeyes* Now Dr Lecter will come and kill me in very slow and painful manner... Share this post Link to post
