Supreme Court Won't Block Texas Abortion Law

The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday decided not to block Texas' new abortion law that activists said had the effect of shutting down about a third of the abortion clinics in the state.

The justices voted 5-4 in favor of not taking action. The four liberal justices dissented.

I'm so, so sorry for all the women in Texas.

@danegrrrl-You *are* important, and I send non-creepy mom hugs.

I am so glad I don't live in Texas anymore, but at the same time I want to go back there and fight it. I want to just slap everyone who supported this crap in the face.

Sorry to hear about Texas and the Supreme Court. Not at all surprising, but my heart goes out to Texas. =(

As for a bit of good news...

PP just announced on FB that ABQ has voted down the 20 week ban! I did not get a chance to vote (too far away, grr), but it looks like we pulled it off, thank goodness.

I'm sorry about that, I really am. If you live in or near a big city, like Dallas, you may have some hope.

I was able to get an IUD. I hope you can too.

I live in Fort Worth. It's just that I'm a minor so like obtaining it isn't the breeziest exercise.

How old are you? Girls as young as 16 can get them here.

I don't think the problem would be her age, but more so the doctor thinking he knows best and refusing to allow her to get one.

I *hate* it when the medical community vetoes things like that. The difficulty in getting tubes tied if the woman doesn't have kids is my biggest pet peeve...

I understand the logic behind that difficulty though. No one wants to be sued because someone gets their tubes tied and then their biological clock turns on later.

A lawyer might be able to get around that though.

I DO know a woman that was able to get sterilized at age 24. So I'm gonna get her help when I'm around that age. I told my old doc straight up, "If I get pregnant, I'm getting an abortion, and if I'm refused, I will look for illegal alternatives."

This is what actually made her start talking and gave me a few places and healthcare clinics that would allow me to get other birth control methods, such as my IUD. I had to say some pretty disturbing stuff to let her know that I'm NOT playing around. I'm NOT on the fence on having kids. I do NOT want them and nothing she or my family will say can EVER change my mind. I've baby sat my 2 year old nephew once. Change a diaper once, will never do it again.

I'll agree that having children is a gift, but some of us don't want it. If I could, I'd magically transfer my fertility to a woman who wants them. But sadly that's impossible.

I'd gladly accept if that were possible. I'm sick of having ovaries that make cysts instead of eggs.

It's stupid that there isn't a standard contract out there with no loopholes that prevents a woman from suing her doctor if she changes her mind. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make.

I don't really understand why a woman would sue her doctor anyway. For one thing, she elected to have it, and another thing, how is suing her doctor going to bring back her fertility anyway?

Personally I don't really understand why a woman wouldn't simply adopt if she did change her mind. I don't get the extreme desire to have your own kid. Maybe it's just because I'm an animal person and I have no problem forming extremely powerful bonds with things that didn't have to live inside me for 9 months or contain my DNA in order to be loved by me.

EDIT: Hey, I thought a mother's love was supposed to be unconditional? I guess not.

Because people in the US are inherently unwilling to take responsibility for their own decisions in some regards. People sue for stupid reasons here. Also if the doctor failed to provide all information about what this kind of operation entails that would be grounds for a lawsuit, probably.

It's safe to say most people want or will want biological children at some point in their lives...adoption sometimes just doesn't cut it, I guess.

The whole "Blood is thicker than water" bs. My father was adopted and grandma loves him just like her own and wouldn't give him up for anything in the world.

The whole blood thicker than water is actually supposed to mean the opposite of what everyone thinks it means. The full saying is basically "Blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb"

It's such a shame that not all children in the foster system get a chance to find a real family that will love them no matter what. The thing is I think a lot of people looking to adopt go to private or open adoption so they know the child is 1: a baby and 2: doesn't have serious problems. Like, an adoption process where the adoptive parents and birth parents meet and prepare and go through all the legal details.

Or they'll go adopt a baby from overseas. I honestly don't understand why someone would adopt a child from overseas when there are so many HERE that need a loving home.

Because in many ways it's easier and the wait time is faster to go overseas than not. Also, many overseas children are in much worse positions than the ones over here in America. The foster care system isn't the greatest here, but there are much worse situations abroad.

Add to that answer, it is (or at least was 10-14 years ago) possible for people who fall into certain demographics that would disqualify them here in the States to qualify to adopt a child from overseas.

Case in point, a family friend who adopted a girl out of China about that long ago. She'd always wanted a child, but wasn't in a relationship and didn't want to be a single mother until she was financially set. Unfortunately, early menopause runs in her family, so by the time she felt she was in a position to have a child, her chances of conceiving through simple donor insemination were pretty slim... I don't know her exact age, but I believe she was close to 50 at the time. So, she figured she'd adopt; after all, there are plenty of babies and small children that need homes, right?

Except she couldn't adopt through the state. Too old, single, and (at least at the time) the state wanted to place adoptees with families of the same race. So then she tried private adoption, and ran into quite a bit of the same problem; too many birth mothers were looking to give their babies to a married couple with a dog and house with a white picket fence... they didn't want to give their babies to a single woman who was as old as their own mothers.

So that was when she started looking at overseas adoptions, and eventually did get her daughter.

I remember a story on the news about a man being deemed "too fat" to adopt with his wife even though they had adopted successfully before.

That is so sad. It commercialism at its finest. If you are not thin you are not healthy and therefore cannot take of anyone much less yourself. The person that denied them for that reason should be tarred, feathered, and beat with a phone book.

Maybe we can skip the tar and feathers and just hit them with a phonebook.
