And then I found another holiday/holiday checker - another beauty:

Radiant Angel and Solstice: https://dragcave.net/lineage/A3wVZ  Thank you @Odeen!

FOUR SAs in there - but how can I ever continue this?! I'd have to bug Infinis for matching offspring of their Radiant Angels, and JaziandCo for Solstice offspring ... but they don't seem to play anymore :( Oh, despair! Maybe another blueish holiday could work ... Omen or Arcana? Oh no, more spriters to bug ... *sighs* I'm not good with this.

You're welcome @Ruby Eyes! That's one of my favorite lineages ^.^

  2. Can sick soft-shell eggs hatch?

I have an egg that's at 3 days, 18 hrs, over 5000 views, fully cracked, that is refusing to hatch...

It's been sick for a while though and I'm not sure why

    Really stubborn egg :/

    Can they hatch when fogged?

Sick eggs can hatch. Fogged eggs cannot, though they can hatch as soon as they are unfogged.

What kind of egg is it?

  3. So this is gonna sound a lil dumb if I don't have context.

I was showing a friend some of the sketch for a dragon request and they asked if it would ever really get onto the site?

And I wanted to say "maybe one day" but I uh. Realized I wasn't sure.

Are there dragons from the completed sub-forum that actually made it into the cave? :?

I haven't been around the dragon request sub-forum long enough to know.

Antareans, Glacewings, Fire Gems, Pyralspite (adapted from a piece of abandoned public art), Speckle-throated (I think), and Undine were all public in some capacity before their release. I am probably missing multiple breeds since I was not actually that active in DR until well after I got in cave, but those are the ones I know of off-hand.

  4. The problem with this might be that some people don't want their dragons clicked, and the person randomly transported there might not know that. The person might not have known that they could hide their scroll, or not found it necessary.

I'm not sure that would be an issue if, say, the random scroll produced could only be one that is both not hidden and currently accepting aid.

  5. user posted image - I'm a Slytherin. I debated making the other houses, but I only had 3 entries available and no time to make all 4 house eggs anyway. Sorry.

user posted image - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, featuring the improbable sperm whale and bowl of petunias. Douglas Adams is bae, and that book is all kinds of perfect.

user posted image - This was for my youngest cat, Loki.

Loki was born with an enlarged heart. He was given to me by his breeder free of charge - because this particular defect never goes away, is very expensive to monitor/treat, and can kill its victims without warning long before their time. He also happened to be the sweetest, gentlest, most loving little poodle cat in the universe, and every person who met him wanted to steal him. He knew how to sit, shake hands, and fetch, loved to shove his head into your hand for pets, and would purr so hard he'd almost start whistling. He loved sleeping under the covers right against my side with his head on my arm, and most of my time in front of the computer was spent with him curled up in my lap. On March 18, four days before Loki's 3rd birthday, his heart condition claimed his life.

Please cherish every moment you have with your pets. They are truly priceless.

  6. I think the biggest question here is whether the minor hassle of an egg wall is worth the unknown hassle (assuming it's possible) of coding a filter that situationally excludes eggs produced by a specific breeder.

That's not to say that a small subset's irritation is not valid because they're small, but more a logistical question.

  7. Light Concorde is right. Invites are a one-time-only thing. If you got an invite last year and nobody invited you this year, unfortunately them's the works. We each are only allowed to invite one person per year.

  8. I saw 3 in the space of about 20 minutes this morning, so they're definitely still there. They're just hard to catch because everyone is afraid they're NOT dropping, and people with slower connections never get the chance to see them.

  9. Please calm down, it's ridiculous to already get up in arms the split second I post a comment about my thoughts on the sprite.

I am not saying it's official. I'm not saying it's suddenly ~the sprite~. I'm displaying what I thought it was going to be, not claiming that this is the proper sprite or posting it up claiming that it's my art. Like honestly, you're acting like I replaced the sprite in DC, claimed that this was my sprite and basically used artwork without permission.

I am making a comment about how I wish it had looked. I displayed my thoughts on this via an edited sprite, which I said was an edited sprite of the original and did not claim as my own. You likely misunderstood my intentions; as a spriter, I know that people stealing and editing sprites is VERY common on places like this.

By bringing to light the issues I saw on the sprite, I'm not inviting an attack on myself, nor claiming the art as my own. Please, gods, chill out. I only just got on the forums to post my opinion about something, and already I'm being kicked in the face for providing an example edit of what I wish the Fire Gems had been.

Honestly, I mean no harm. I'm not trying to get on people's bad sides. sad.gif

I literally just asked if you'd obtained permission to edit the sprite, but ok.

  10. So, I've been here since 2010, but only just recently joined the forums...kinda specifically for this post, and the new dragon release. I've seen all different kinds of dragons come and go, some designs flat-out amazing and others a little lackluster, but the most recent release of the Gems kinda...I dunno. Rubbed me the wrong way?

The spriters are all fantastic at their jobs, I've seen them with other dragon sprites that were outstanding to look at, and classics to the cave. So I have no doubt they put in a LOT of work for each of these sprites, especially considering there are--what, six different potential dragons from the eggs?

But I can't help but feel like the sprites are something that would fit better with, say, a game from the 1990's rather than 2017. It reminds me of really old dungeon bosses from the good ol' pixel games of the past, or the REALLY old Pokemon sprites: fairly monochromatic (blue, red, green), a little hard to discern due to the darkness/lightness contrast, and ever so slightly wonky in design. I'm not the only one that thinks this, either--I've seen a fairly even split in the DC site, half liking it, half hating it.

The dragon appears to be based off of boulder opals, at first glance. Gorgeous colors within a brown lace, splintering off into thickly rich colors and thin, speckled splotches. Which naturally fits perfectly with the description for the hatchlings, with their patches of bright scales between the brown lacing of the other scales.

I'm a spriter myself, though I haven't ever come out to request spriting for DC (though I would honestly love to) and while I'm no expert on dragon sprites, I decided to make a small example image of what I, personally, sorta expected.

Now, I dunno if these are temporary sprites, or if they're sticking around, but...I'm personally a little disappointed, after 7 years of being on DC, to see sprites that feel very lackluster. Now, this is definitely no mark on the spriters themselves--they've made some AMAZING work. I just feel as if it could be a little more...up to cave standards.

Did you obtain the spriter's permission to edit their artwork?

  11. I remember the midwinter madness release, when we got a batch of new very common dragons and they ended up clogging the cave for months afterwards. That was because they were trying to balance to the total number of dragons that already existed in the cave. After that, TJ announced a change to the rarity mechanics so that new breeds would only have to balance to the past year's worth of dragons.

I suspect that TJ isn't going about setting a specific timeframe for new drops, but setting a rarity level and letting the cave balance itself. The cave would drop new eggs exclusively at the beginning to make up the deficit, then begin mixing in other breeds as the deficit shrank and the ratios became balanced.

If the new dragons are rare, they aren't going to be dropping long before the cave is balanced. They're rare; there shouldn't be tons of them dropping for days or you'll end up with a surplus and they won't drop again for quite some time. That's not something any of us enjoy. I remember when the rarity of the metallics was being rebalanced, too, and just not ever seeing any of them anywhere.

I totally understand the issues people have with new releases occurring at random and missing out on certain eggs, but I know that having mandatory solid drops for extended periods of time will cause more problems than it will solve as the cave has to balance itself. I'd much rather go back to having a release schedule. It would solve the problem of people "missing out" without causing problems with the post-release drop rates.

I remember that release. It was the release where we got Nocturnes and...Electrics, and I think one other breed. There was virtually nothing but those breeds for I think two weeks until he changed it manually.

Since the change that resulted from that particular issue, the longer a dragon floods, the more scarce it will become after the flood stops. I do not think that making eggs flood for longer will be a good idea at all.

  12. I contacted Z about the issue. They have no idea what's going on like the rest of us.

So until TJ comes on, we really have no real answer as to why this happened.

Why do you keep insisting something happened? Nothing happened.

  13. I've seen a few scary releases (like the 7th birthday bash where things like coppers dropped well for only a day after people had already filled up on other eggs). This release seems completely within ordinary levels of user-manufactured rarity at this point. I would not start drumming up conspiracy theories about there being something wrong with the release just yet.

  14. Sadly people won't go back three or six or ten pages to find an answer to their question, so they ask it even if it was answered a page back, then three or four people answer them and take up half a page. wink.gif

That's not really a defense of the practice of spamming release threads with info posts. That's more highlighting a problem with users not being willing to dig back even a single page.

  15. Can we please start a conversation about info posts in news threads? Sometime it's good (like whoever was keeping track of the drama on vday. The topic was moving so far that people couldn't keep up) but lately it feels like half of each page is a repost of information. These posts add little to the conversation and may be better served elsewhere (like the wiki perhaps). Maybe it would be good to limit 1 repost x many pages? As it is now they serve no use to adding to on going conversation and like I said, take up half the page.

I agree with this. I think any more than one repost of information every 5 pages or so is pretty excessive.

As it is, it seems like a way to pad one's post count.
