There was a slightly distressing event today. A small fight broke out between the Terrae and the Spitfires. It was an unfortunate and disturbing thing to see. I couldn't get any info from either of the two clans as to why the fight occured. But what I heard from round the cave gossip was that someone said something and offended somebody else. I had to tell the Mistress about this and see if she could get it figured out and resolved. After I told her, she called all the Spitfires and Terraes into one of the side caves for a private discussion with the Stones standing guard at all the entrances with all the Pygmies ready to send for extra help if she called out for it. She know's we would never intentionally hurt her, but she wanted to be prepared incase it got physical agian. Afterwards, she called everyone to the main meeting cave (thankfully the Magi had just finished the comminication mirrors so all the water types could be included without having to be uncomfortable) to go over a special plan she devised after everything else that happened. She told us we were all going to start training and devising defense tacticts for our turf, both outsid and within the mountian. She said she had been hearing rumors of other Families/Clans being attacked. She doesn't want us to be alarmed or live in fear, but she figured that it's better to be prepared for it just in the minimal chance it happens. It will also give everyone a chance to work off some tensions and energy while learning how to work together. She has already set up a schedule for each clan to come to her and tell her what special things they might be able to do. That way she can plan tactics for any situation that might come up.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to think in terms of battle, but it will give everyone a chance to do something. Anything that gives some confidence and sense of responsibilty is a good thing though. I think it will all work out. And its better to be prepared for it even if it never happens, then for it to happen and to be caught unaware. The best thing though, the Pygmies will be used as messengers. Thus keeping them out of much of the mischief they tend to get into without even trying.

Dear Journal

The whole community has now been place on constant watch over mysterious showing sign of sickness as its shell feels soft. How immediately few have shifted blame onto the Vampires due to being the second day it has now succumb to the illness that most newborns experience. If not for the few other elders supporting me to dispatch on all accusations pointed towards the Vampires, that they like them want only to see what hatches. Many still are not convince I'm afraid to say can only hope that our new addition to the family shall prove they're just as caring despite their given nature.

Dear Journal,

It would seem I have acquired a child- no, not my newly-bred egg, which has begun to hatch- a CB ungendered Nebula hatchling. The moment it hatched it collapsed on the ground, squealing pitifully, and I felt a pang of sympathy for the poor motherless thing. It could hardly move, with only a flimsy pair of vestigial wings and two stubby little legs, so I rushed over to it and helped it get going. Once it figured out how to walk, it latched onto me and refused to leave. I named it Infere, and hopefully it will not have grown up by the time my egg hatches so they can play together!

Dear diary:

Five hatchlings, along with five eggs is quite enough for us to look after right now. The hatchlings play quite happily with one another, so there's no trouble on that front.

In fact, it's been quiet all round. Not much in the way of trouble has happened lately. I don't know if something might happen sooner or later, but for now, all I can do is continue to watch over the clan as it grows larger.

Dear Journal,

It hatched! My egg hatched! There was much rejoicing- everyone in the cave was there to welcome the little darling into the world. It locked eyes with me and let out a squeak, apparently frightened by the crowd it had attracted. But soon it was sheltered under my wing, curled up and asleep. It's so tiny- much smaller than the other hatchlings, but they don't mind. They know to treat it nicely and I'm impressed with their manners and patience around the newborn little dear. I haven't decided what to name it yet, and until it genders I'll refer to it as Eov because that's part of its code. Infere was skipping around happily (she gendered female, and to my surprise has already taken interest in a fully-grown male- I expect some eggs from them in the future!) thinking of names for her new little sibling.

I am happy at heart now, with my mate and my hatchling. Incognito was beyond thrilled when our little one decided to pop out of its shell, crawling through the gaping hole on stubby little legs. He kept its egg warm for the entire period of time it was in there, with the help of his flaming wings. So committed to fatherhood is he- almost like a second mother to our offspring. I cannot wait until it genders, and we can give it a proper name.

Journal - dd/mm/yyyy

Yesterday, Leona and Aleysia came for a visit to the nursery cave along with their children, Keiko and Atlantic. I was quite happy to see them and wondered how quickly both of them grow up. It felt almost like yesterday when Keiko was still trying to find her way around and Atlantic was getting himself in trouble again. All of the hatchling-sitters felt a strong sense of accomplishment to see them all grow up into healthy and strong dragons.

Speaking of healthy, we are having some very feisty hatchlings here. The Balloon and Swallowtail hatched during dawn today and they're quickly mingling with the other four hatchlings, a Green Stripe, a Bluna, a Waterhorse and a Sunsong. The Sunsong was the offspring of Kurto and Vearmina and they also came for a visit with Leona and Aleysia. The two were thrilled to finally became parents and they truly dote over the little hatchling, but it seemed to be more independent compared to its parents. Nonetheless, it was fond of them just as much as they were fond of it. I wonder what gender it would be...

The Waterhorse was Mehethural's child, but you might be surprised to know that the Thunder Dragoness Dig was its mother. Even Leona and the hatchling-sitters were shocked when I told them that. Well, to be honest, I never see Dig Volt as a mother type, but as Rezo said to me during his visit a week ago, looks can be deceiving. Surprisingly, Dig was also the doting mother type. She would visit during the night and cuddle with all the hatchlings. Of course, I had to constantly remind her to keep an eye on the electricity, especially around her little hatchling. Electricity doesn't always bode well with a Waterhorse Dragon, after all.

The Mint Dragons came with baskets of fruits of many colors. The hatchlings were captivated and quickly set their claws on the fruits. Now that Lu Xi had more help with the garden, she could finally expand the garden and fertilize a section of dry soil near the previous location. The Angel also brought in more Mint eggs and they were so happy and excited. I noticed that all of the Mint Dragons that arrived in the archipelago would, sooner or later, develop interest in gardening. Well, I suppose it's a good thing. Gardening helps them contribute for everyone's well being despite their weaknesses. They have been a great help and everyone is eager to lend a hand.

Ah, the hatchlings are hungry... It's dinner time already? Time certainly flies quickly...

Dear Piece of Paper,

That's how you're supposed to start things like this off, right? Hmph, whatever.

Anyways, today's been ridiculously good, so I won't let it get to me.

You see, this morning I decided to bless the world with my hatching. Well, Matmetchi didn't, ahem, really notice till later, but at least she seemed content.

O-onward then. I was assigned two wives. That's right two. I s'pose the girl finally got the message that I'm a little bigger than the other hatchlings. You know, being of a lustrious bronze, and a tinsel to boot. I might even get a third and rub it in Adeemial of Two Wive's face. Haha, that'll be good. Until then, I guess I can just be happy with my two girls.

Other than the mate part, my own- I mean 'caretaker' seems to have acknowledged my superior form since she named me, "I'm a Heartbreaker". It's about time she got a clue! Hasn't she seem the way the other eggs shunned me because they knew they were out of my league? Matmetchi didn't exactly treat me any different than she would a "common" egg, but that's besides the point. It's not like she could give me special treatment as an egg, I mean, the only step is putting me on display for others to marvel at. Hmph! She better bring me a whole cow next mealtime, I'm getting sick of these chicken wings. And the other hatchlings have been eyeing the local cave chicken as well... But apparently she's "off limits" since she was stolen like us, so I... might help keep her safe. Maybe, if I'm in a good mood.

Not like I care of anything!

Dusk Divide Dragon Keep Journals: Previous Page - Next Page

Aug 31, Wednesday

State of the youngster's nests:

Egg - flamingo, 3rd even gen., purebred

Egg - harvest, wildborn

Egg - pillow, wildborn

Egg - pink, 7th even gen.

Egg - red stripe, 3rd even gen.

Egg - terrae, 4th gen., 'tinselfail'

Egg - terrae, wildborn

Hatchling - harvest, wildborn, female: Cultiva's Legume

Hatchling - gold prize, 4th gen 'stairstep'

Hatchling - sunsong, 4th even gen.

Hatchling - terrae, wildborn, male: Coppice's Sergeant

The Keep's 500th dragon grew up yesterday, the white dragon Ochus Yulerose. Such a significant occasion deserved a celebration. The Black Guard, the Coal Guard and various other dragons cooperated for once and went on a massive hunt. They gathered many deer, and the hellfires roasted them to perfection. There were some games for the adults to play, like messy mock team fights and the such, which of course I didn't join.

The 500th dragon himself played in some of the games but mostly stayed out of it, shyly murmuring thanks when others gave him congratulations. He's a very proper and demure white dragon, and he didn't let it get to his head. He did get a mate though - Nateefa Dorkface Thuwed courted him, and they successfully bred a lovely pink egg, which is taking up the Keep Overseer's new seventh egg slot.

On other news, the Overseer is starting a new lineage clan of terraes and harvests, a checker-patterned even-generation line. She has been aiming to get quite a few wildborn eggs of those species. The terrae and harvest hatchlings, Cultiva's Legume and Coppice's Sergeant, have been growing up together and take quite well to each other. They've been creating a lot of mischief that I, of course, have to clean up.

I could certainly use some more help, but the other caretakers are having problems in their personal life. Strykiir's mate Zirghnitas has left her and Adularya, the new caretaker, is being harassed by our tyrant Skyern. It's been left to Kharvari and I holding down the fort, and Kharvari isn't the most stable dragon. I must petition the Overseer for some help.

Dear Journal

Like previous journal entry relations between the vampires shall take some time for things to be patch up. On a more lighter note shall be happy to announce that the mysterious little egg has now hatched creating much celebration. From this mysterious egg a small bronze dragon emerge into this world around late last night. It is unknown what this small bronze hatchling will grow up to be, but our master refuses to answer us of its origin.

Her response has not yet change when first asked.

"My dear AngelicSapphire now is not the time to reveal unto you all its origin or gender. Let time take its course and continue to watch over him as you're doing now shall answers be revealed."

Her wishes shall be respected while we continue to watch over the small hatchling.

Dear parchment:

Brr! Getting chilly at nights now. I keep finding the Pygmies gathered round the Magma egg, basking in the heat it's giving off.

I have yet to find a mate. I keep getting the feeling that I'm being punished for gendering female. Yes, we female Moonstones outnumber the males seven to two right now, but that's no reason why I shouldn't have a mate. Then again, there seems to be a spate of hatchlings gendering female right now. Some of the males have started complaining apparently.

Dear Journal,

Little Eov's name remains, because it-he-she has not gendered yet. There is still plenty of time left until I discover the super-secret gender of my little one. Incognito has been out all day hunting, and every hour or so he and his partner- a dear friend of mine named Naresa- would return for only a moment to add their fresh kill to the prey pile. While Naresa waited patiently outside the cave, Incognito would trot over to the nest and say hello to me. Eov was always thrilled when he dropped in- Inc remarked "Eov sure loves his daddy!" with a chuckle. I guess he thinks Eov is a "he" but to be honest I have a feeling she's really a "she!"

Inc is the kind of father I always wanted by my side, and I cannot say that enough. He is sweet and committed to parenthood, not to mention light-hearted, humorous in al the best ways, and faithful. He is not only my mate, but my best friend, and for that I am grateful. He is the only one for me, I swear, but every now and then I think about Ight. He visits me in my dreams sometimes, not saying anything but just sort of standing there, nothing more than a reminder of what could have been.

Lately I've seen Ight eyeing Eov. He's walked past the nest plenty of times, and never even spares a glance at the eggs and hatchlings, but more recently he has been pausing to linger by the nest. At a closer look it is obvious that his gaze is focused on Eov. Eov, of course, is oblivious, but I fear that Ight is...planning something. I swear, if he doesn't stay away from my baby I'll...

Well, I don't know what exactly I will do, but I will not be merciful. I will stop at nothing to protect my mate, my hatchling, and most importantly, this one sliver of happiness I've ever had in my life. I will not let a jealous male ruin it for me...but something tells me I'm worried about the wrong male. So who could it possibly be? Who exactly is trying to steal from me? And what, exactly, are they trying to steal? I hope with all my heart that Eov will be safe.

Dear parchment:

Awoke to find hatchlings crawling all over me. Not that I minded that much. I adore all young creatures, you see, and wouldn't dream of saying a harsh word to any of our hatchlings. The Tinsel and Vine hatchlings are the very best of friends. Where one goes, the other follows. I do hope that their friendship continues when they're adults. I know that the Vine was picked to be a potential mate to the Tinsel, but I have this feeling that they might be the same gender.

Speaking of friends, the Magma hatchling seems determined to be my friend. Which is very sweet of it. Having only just hatched, it'll be a good while before it-she-he grows wings and genders. It already has a name though. Maybe, just maybe, if it grows up male, we'll be mates.

Dear Journal,

Once again, I write an entry without Eov having gendered yet. It-he-she still prances around with stubby, useless wings- easily considered vestigial among terms- and still hasn't reached a growth spurt yet. Eov has about five hours until the secret gender is revealed, and then writing will be much easier. Mothers prefer to refer to their offspring as a she or a he rather than an it. It is an almost cruel term- undomesticated and worthless. But Eov is none of these things. I only wish I could know whether I have a daughter or a son. Inc is patiently waiting as well, but there is a glimmer of expectation in his eyes and I know he desperately wants a son. He has fathered two other dragons in his lifetime, both adults, having grown up long ago. But like me, he wasn't a big part of his children's lives. Both of us wants to make up for our failing parenthood in the past- even though I mothered Istci, despite her being CB- with Eov. Originally, I thought Eov would be a girl, but now I am not so sure. It-he-she acts neither feminine nor masculine, so only time will tell.

That is all for now. Not much has happened today. Eov went "hunting" for the first time, a hunt that consisted of it-he-she pouncing on a butterfly and trotting proudly back into a cave with the limp insect clamped in its-his-her jaws. I merely chuckled to myself, amused at this small and adorable attempts at being a great fierce hunter. When Inc came home later with a deer in tow, Eov gasped in admiration. The entire time we ate, Eov was awestruck. It-he-she apparently has taken an interest in the art of predatory acts. Either Inc and I have a bold hunter on our hands, or a daring little huntress. I hope to find out soon.

Dear Journal

The natural sounds of a storm can be heard outside the entrance cave and best record this quickly while it is still freshly imprinted within my thoughts. We do not know the exact race of our mysterious hatchling gendered has now been revealed. It is a girl, which our Lady has named Little Bronze Angel. I wonder if the name given has to do with unusual scale coloring perhaps. Again, she appears rather tight lip about giving us any further details other than that of the cave born eggs we had been watching. Though we are in the clear of the earlier stages when this mysterious hatchling entered our cave continues to remain alert should another relapse occurs. Till then we shall wait with great anticipation to learn of this dragon origin.

Like to also note that there’s been on cave born and few newborn (of our seasonal dragon) eggs added into our clan. A few have shown signs of soft shell are being watched over alongside the mysterious hatchling. The new hatchling even seems to be aware of their illness drawn the two underneath her wings. It is a cute sight to see someone so tiny try to shield them from danger.

AngelicSapphire

PS. The mysterious hatchling grew up late this evening. To our amazement it is what our Lady calls a Bronze Tinsel Dragon.

Not much has been going on as of late. Eggs come in, hatch and then the hatchlings grow up. Last two matings were failures though. That happens sometimes. Besides, we've got enough young to be looking after right now.

Well, I was wrong about the fact that the Tinsel and Vine hatchlings might be the same gender. The Tinsel is female, and the Vine is male. They're both thrilled, of course. Dear Journal,

Incognito is absolutely thrilled. Why? Because he has a son. Eov- now renamed Avery Waterdrop- gendered male shortly after my last entry. I just trotted over to check on him and he was staring at his wings with wide eyes, fluttering around happily. He's no expert, but he can fly from here to there when needed. I named him Avery Waterdrop because I have always loved the name Avery, and also because he is like a drop of water: delicate and small, but extremely important. A single drop of water is home to a thousand tiny organisms, or in his case, emotions. He is a quiet youngster, keeping his feelings locked up inside. But that's not a big deal since he almost never gets angry. Everything is a wonder to him, and he finds the bright side in everything. In a way, he is my firstborn. Istci was my first real child, one I actually cared for and loved, but she was not related to me by blood. Avery is. He is the beginning of something new.

I will miss him when he grows up. I will miss the butterflies he drops at my feet, the way he wiggles his tail when he's happy or excited, and the way he curls up next to me when he's ready to go to sleep. But when he grows up, he will be such a benefit to the cave. He has the makings of a good hunter, and a docile disposition. I know that he will make friends wherever he walks, and any enemies he will have will be the ones who can't appreciate him for what he is.

Almost time to breed again.

So much has happened in the days since last I wrote. The training and orginizing of the defence forces have gone well. We all train mostly in defensive actions to minimize damage to ourselves while maximizing damage to any who would seek to harm us. It's working really well as an early notice of visitors also. We found this out when the Mistress recieved a visitor the other day. He was a sailor who was lost at sea, and was spotted and brought in by one of the Deep Sea dragons. He had survived a great wreck cause by an awful storm. But how he survived no one really knows, not even he. The last thing he remembered before waking in the Mistress' home cave was falling over the railing into the churning sea. But as to how he arrived here is a testament to everyone taking to heart the message we were given. "An observant and ready dragon will be prepared for anything. From a friendly visitor to the most deadly of attackers."

He was a good man and glad for all the help he was givin by the Mistress. I think he was a bit overawed by her because of the rapport she has with all of us. In return for the new clothes she made him in preperation for his having to travel in a season so near to winter. He helped her to gather the crops from her garden and milk and eggs from her goats and regular chickens (she still hopes to find a special chicken in the magic egg cave someday). For that she even gave him a bit of traveling food and one bolt of fine woolen cloth she wove from her sheep. The cloth was to be used for trading for any supplies he might need, for she had no coin to spare for him. He swore he would repay her somehow but she said there was no need to do anything but spread word to any who asked that she was kind and wished to live in peace with he neighbors. She would not bring war to them, but will only defend herself if it were brought to her.

Besides that however, we had a double new family member celebration. The Mistress had been given both a Cheese egg and a Paper hatchling. We had such a raucus celebration that the echos of it were heard for days through all the passages in the mountian. 'Tis good to have some fun now and again.

Dear parchment:

A veritable dearth of males in the clan at the moment, or so it seems to me. I'm still mateless, anyway. Ah well, I'm young enough that the lack of a mate doesn't cause me undue worry. Although I would very much like to have children, at some stage.

Saying that, though, I have noticed that one of the Sunstones seems to be paying me some attention. He doesn't say anything, but whenever I pass through his territory, he's always there, watching me. I believe he's mated once before, but it seems that he and his previous mate had some sort of falling out after the egg was laid.

Speaking of eggs being laid, Buttercup The Princess Bride and Karnivean mated yesterday. They produced a Tinsel, but, rather than keeping it, gave it away to another clan. Buttercup did tell me that should they mate a second time, then they'll be keeping that egg.

*Sigh* All this talk of mates and eggs is making me feel lonely. I know I wrote that I'm not that worried about not having a mate, but it would be nice to have somebody to talk to. Friends are nice, but I'd like some dragon who I can express my deepest desires and fears to.

Dearest Journal,

I was quite shocked today when the female Vampire made her way to my lair today. She and the two males rarely leave there own lair for any reason except to hunt or the rare occasion when they are given an egg to attempt to turn. But she came with an interesting idea to pass on to the Mistress. She said she was to shy to attempt to tell the Mistress herself because she believes she is to firghtening to look at. Though it may be true that she has a fearsome appearance, the Mistress spends just as much time visiting them as she does the rest of us. I think the poor girl is just shy.

But anyhow, on to the idea she passed on to me. She said that we have a problem with speaking with the nearby towns. She said that we should use a system with ravens or some other bird. It would be unexpected for one who lives with dragons to utilize any other animal for anything other than food. I think the Mistress will like this idea too, for it fits right into her plan of making us all feel usefull for more than just companionship (which means the most to her of course. she loves us all dearly). It gives us a sense of pride to have a task to do. Keeps us from getting fat and lazy anyway.

Soon Seren and I will attempt to bread again. The last time we just were going through the motions. We don't care any less for each other because of it, we were just driven by instinct. But I have hope for the next time.

September 11, evening

State of the nest:

balloon hatchling

red dorsal hatchling

skywing hatchling

black hatchling

bronze egg

magi egg

daydream egg

purple dorsal egg

I don't know whether to be happy or not. Recently, as our clan has been becoming more famous, we have gotten many offers to keep eggs from other caves.

A human, their face hidden under a hood, gave Wexeth a female silver hatchling, telling him to keep her. (Fanthesi.) Then, Maghatti and Thaderne were given to us as eggs, again by mysterious humans. We found a nilia pygmy egg wrapped in leaves near the cave. (Tawek.) Then a gray egg that had, along with its lineage and information card, a note stuck on it that said: "Please take good care of it." (Huita.) And now, a shiny bronze egg in a basket, with a note: "Feel free to take this bronze tinsel egg."

We did some research on that species, to find out that they are very valuable to humans because of their beauty and origins. I always found it strange to value appearance or rarity over other qualities, but nevertheless, yes, I'm happy.

It also said they are harder to raise, but I believe we can handle it with Jawya.

We have been gathering more black and red dragons and training them. When we have enough fighters to far outnumber the vampires (our seekers reported about twenty of them around), we are finally pushing them away from Thoiris' territories.

Ysfien is really happy about the new magi, Fayawa. She says he's absolutely excellent, and that there are finally more useful mages other than her and Upheyen. The new frozen hatchling, Zotto, is good according to Ysfien too. Glad to hear these news.

I have to go now, Jawya needs some help with the eggs. Three of them are about to hatch in a few moments.

Most of the dragons really don't care about the incident, because, one, it's gotten old, two, it's not really relevant anymore, and three, Anei forgave Fylar, and eventually Possibly for starting it in the first place. Still, that prissy Canopy keeps bringing it up, and she's really whiny and annoying. Huh, she refuses to even look at Possibly for mating with what she considers a 'dirty half-blood'. Then again, she treats nearly everyone like that.

Oh right, another human gave Durppie a black dragon's egg and a shiny silver egg said to be of a Legendary Silver Tinsel. I wonder if Tinsels have any magic capablities.

Meh. I can hear Divine's voice from here. I have half a mind to go turn the little snot into a pile of, well, snot.

Currently in the nest: A Tinsel egg, gray egg (Parents are Etora and Semondac), 2 Blacks (one by Elyinia and Irilyon), and a water dragon egg rescued from the pile of unwanted eggs.

This is delightful! A Tinsel! I have heard stories of these wondrous beauties. I -

Did I just hear a shrill scream and a blast of magic coming from down the corridor? *sigh* Probably one of the magic users decided to shut Divine up. They can get rather...creative in which spells they use, so...*goes to leave*

Oh come on. Can't she stay as a ferret? Fine. Ruin my source of amusement for the day. It's not setting a good example for Tamarron? It's setting a perfectly good example. And she was the one who turned Divine into a ferret! How am I responsible? Okay, I gave her the idea. But I was teaching her transfiguring magic in a fun and innovative way-What? It's not like she'll be hurt. Physically.

I had to turn her back into a dragon. On my way to her den, my newest student followed me, and I had the idea to let her do some of the transforming magic. Forget deer or wild bears, the Canopy was the ideal guinea pig for the lesson. And she's shut up for a bit.

Today's lesson...was interesting.
