2020-05-21 - Dragon Cave's 14th Birthday!

Recommended Posts

I'm kinda overwhelmed and have no idea what to say. Just keep staring at all these amazing new adults! Wow. I... Woah. They are all so awesome! And I love every single breed's description/lore, I always love reading new breed's descriptions and thinking about the different ways they will interact with all the dragons on my scroll.

The Sapo Dragons are SO CUTE omg! The pose and body is very majestic and beautiful, but because of their specific coloring I just think 'CUUUUTE!' every time I look at them. Which is a good thing. Definitely. And omg their description, with the playful bubbles... The one and *only* time I would ever welcome animation in this game, I'd absolutely love to see them actively using bubbles to clean themselves, it just sounds so lovely!

The Cloudplumes are so cuddly! I love the extra info and sketches SkyWolf25 posted, the toe beans awwww! They just look so floofy and comfy and I love snuggles too so I feel like being around a Cloudplume would just destroy any possible productivity because I would just be snuggling with them all day!

I love every single new breed here, but of course I always have favorites. The Amalthean is just pure wonderful amazing joy and nostalgia for me. 💖 💖 I'm so glad hazeh confirmed the reference to The Last Unicorn because that has been on my mind for days and the moment I saw the adult's name I just *knew* it had to be! As a child unicorns were my passion, I collected figurines/stickers/folders/anything and everything relating to unicorns, at one point I had over 2,000 figurines. This dragon is gorgeous in it's own right, the gold-tipped wings and vibrant mane (which seems to have purple, blue, and green, makes it extra shiny and enchanting!). I personally don't understand their horn, description mentions it grows from the same wood as a White's staff, does that mean it's a *wooden* 'horn' that they just affix to their head? Or that wood somehow grows out of their head? Regardless, FAVORITE new release!

(And thank you to all the spriters for this amazing care package, and I genuinely cried when I saw that amazing 'card' that spatio posted, you all are just so wonderful. Thank you for all the amazing work you do for this site, for us users, DC has been such a huge part of my life for so long and just... Thank you!)

Thank you, I'm really glad you like them!! I have loved unicorns since I was a toddler so I knew I had to jump at the chance to make these guys. I am very proud of them!

Since I've seen the question floating around a little, I'll clarify here: the horn is made of both wood and bone. As a hatchling, a piece of the stave from their White parent is removed and bonded to the hatchling as their power comes into being (in the case of Amaltheans with Amalthean parents, it would be a piece broken off from one of the parent's horns). This wood fuses to the dragon's bone and integrates into the neural and magical network of energy in the dragon's body. The wood is still alive, and grows as a tree generally might, thus they have to constantly sharpen and file their horns down on trees or stones in their territory to keep them at manageable lengths. Texture-wise it's a bit harder than natural wood, similar to fossilized wood, because of its fusion to the bone (which acts like antler bone, though the horn itself is never fully shed).

For everyone wondering if there was any theme method to our madness, this release was intended as a care package.  A big thank-you from all of us for being an awesome community; we're right there with you and together we're gonna get through this.  I hope you all enjoy the release!

Oh wow. You all are phenomenal! And these dragons are all wonderful and I love them for all different reasons. There isn't one I don't like!

When I told my friend about the UndinexWhite hybrid and revealed its name her eyes lit up and said, "was that inspired by The Last Unicorn?!" - one of her favorite classic movies.

Here is some of the concept art for the Pargulus Pygmy.

Pargulus_concept_art.png

Some trivia:

-They weren't originally going to come in multiple flavors. After testing out some palettes, I was struggling to narrow it down to one. So after asking some opinions, I narrowed it down to 3 instead.

-Their name comes from a combination of the latin words for 'little' and 'gatherer'

-Citrus trees grow well in the desert and the tropics, peaches in volcanic soil and temperate climates, and berry bushes along the coast and in valleys.

-The plural of Pargulus is Pargulus.

Ok, I just have to laugh.  I was trying to breed another 1 of the Jester dragons, and I successfully did.  However I stupidly did not check to make sure I had an open slot for another egg, which I did not.  So it got dumped to the AP.  I hope whoever finds it takes good care of it.

I don't know if this is intentional, but a lot of these dragons scream BSA to me. Heal for Amaltheans, Nurture (the long-discussed "hatchling incubate") for the pygmies, maybe something to increase ND chances for the Labradorites... Also, will the sapos have any special abilities - like making Luminas shed their scales?

The S1 hatchie now owns my heart. Thank you for sharing the flavors!

Same thing happened to me with a white x undine.

Colours of the Pygmies seem random like the Gemshards, I think. Got some of several different Biomes, Alpine turned Blue, Forest red and Jungle green.

They aren't random--

alpine/coast--blue

desert/jungle--yellow

forest/volcano--red

So many lovely dragons this release. ❤️ I absolutely adore the Amaltheans, and I'm so happy they're hybrids; a perfect excuse to create more deadlines.

I was doing mockups of potential checkers with dragons I already have 2g deadlines of, and Carina/Amaltheans look absolutely gorgeous with either gender combo:

Both the poses and colors look fantastic together imo. Really looking forward to doing these. Blunas, Setsongs, and Avatars of Change/Creation are really pretty too; there's so much potential with these guys!

The moment I saw the female I knew i'd have to do that checker with the purples.

How fascinating! I need to know, what happens to hatchlings that are unfortunately separated from their parents, and don’t have the opportunity to inherit from the stave/horn?

Yes, since we raise ours from eggs ourselves, does that mean our amaltheias never get their full horn? That seems sad. Maybe other whites on our scroll can adopt them and help out?

thank you for these insights! like others, i had guessed wrong on two of the biomes and was curious to know why green was in the desert and red (or peach!) in the forest. this makes total sense now! i also like hearing about the name origin, since i didn't figure it out myself (my high school latin teacher would not be proud of me...)

thank you for the sharing the supercute art, and thank you for keeping three variants! the citrus is my favorite (coincidentally my favorite of the fruit choices too), but i'll be collecting all three of these avidly. 💚💙

My Carina babies! After hearing about the White x Undine hybrids being Amaltheans I got hit with a crazy amount of nostalgia and knew I would have to breed them like crazy. 😁

Definitely going to have a Carina x Amalthea lineage sometime!
