Posted October 1, 2015 I was reading Marie's post and I was wondering... will there be a "Museum" area with all the old sprites, obviously post-copyright-issues? I do not mean on the Wikia, I mean as part of the Encyclopedia. Or something like the Wilderness or the Graveyard but showing the old images. Being a lazy person, I waited to see if someone would create a Suggestion with my idea but... didn't happen. What do you think about having a Museum area where we could see the old sprites? To avoid "erasing" the history of DC when those sprites are updated Share this post Link to post
Posted October 1, 2015 I think a Museum, or an Art Gallery, would be fantastic! Cheers! C4. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 1, 2015 I'd like that, actually... Being able to see how things have evolved over time would be quite interesting. I mean, I know the wiki can serve that purpose, but I go there for different reasons, and I'd rather have an on-site record if possible. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 1, 2015 (edited) I like the idea, but they probably wouldn't be able to use the first sprites due to copyright and that would be a bummer. Essentially, the museum would only be useful for seeing the revamped sprites past "The Fog". Edited October 1, 2015 by DragonKing1337 Share this post Link to post
Posted October 1, 2015 Quoting my posts from the other thread: Edit: I was reading Marie's post and I was wondering... will there be a "Museum" area with all the old sprites, obviously post-copyright-issues? I do not mean on the Wikia, I mean as part of the Encyclopedia. Or something like the Wilderness or the Graveyard but showing the old images. This would actually be pretty cool. I was thinking that the "historic" sprite (if it exists, and personally I would not include 24-hours existence sprites : could be included as a section relative to the breed. But also an area where they all can be seen together. Maybe linking back to the breed. I would rather not see the historic sprites on the breed page; I feel like some people are likely to get confused about why they can't get the "other" sprites. I'd wholeheartedly support a "museum" section where all the old sprites are listed and link back to the breed, though! tl;dr support! Share this post Link to post
Posted October 1, 2015 Love it! wanders off, singing "Their house is a Mu-ze-um where people come to see um"... Share this post Link to post
Posted October 2, 2015 I would love this! And it makes perfect sense, right? We record the 'current' sprites on our scroll, but the 'older' sprites were recorded in the past, so why not make those records available in some form? Makes sense to me! Share this post Link to post
Posted October 2, 2015 I'm going to be contrary here, but I don't think this is necessary. A lot of the sprite changes (horse, whiptail, sunsets/rises, GoNs) were fairly minor in the overall scheme of things. I understand why someone would want a reference to the old golds or St. George's because those were more radical changes, but I just don't see why this is needed on site. The wiki has the old sprites and that's good enough for me. I don't see why the old sprites need to be on the site when that's no longer what our sprites look like. Sorry to fans of the old sprites! Posted October 2, 2015 they're not really erased from the face of the internet. They're still in the wiki. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 2, 2015 Why not? Unifaction has a place for old/retired items. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 2, 2015 Not a bad idea. But I think that these old sprites or even concept art and the like should be added to the encyclopedia. Share this post Link to post
Posted October 2, 2015 Actually, even with the limits that some other people have mentioned ( THAT it could only be used for post-fog sprites) This is still a cool idea. Whether as a stand-alone feature or as a part of the encycolpiedia, either wouldbe cool... though which would work best might require some discussion. There might be arguments for both. JMO I am a fan of those (GIMME BACK MY GOLD MEDALLIONS !) - and I too would rather they were just on the wiki. As would a couple of the artists, as they've said in the update thread... One would even rather her old sprite were nowhere to be seen ! Share this post Link to post
Posted October 2, 2015 There's an apparent disconnect in the intention of the sprites vs how they're perceived. I think the main thing comes down to the subtle difference between "art" and "design." The sprites are more "design" than "art." Their purpose is to convey information (in this case a dragon). This is why replacements can and do happen—the utility they provide is more important than their value as an immutable piece of culture, and thus improving that utility by, say, correcting lighting or fixing anatomy is considered an appropriate tradeoff. This isn't to say that they don't have value as creative works (that's not the point of the "art vs design" split). It just means that there's not really any function to placing the older works on a pedestal and preserving them there. It means that flaws should be seen as things to be corrected, rather than aspects that provide depth to the whole. I suspect that my wording choices here are going to be overly-scrutinized and I have very little doubt that someone will end up being offended by way of misinterpreting my intention here, but the tl;dr is that I don't think this is a thing that needs to happen.
