SO THESE ARE ALL MY BREED HEADCANONS

Pyralspite dragons are on average 4 to 7 feet tall at the shoulder- Spessartines tend to the smaller end of the range, Almandines to the larger, Pyropes tend to the middle. Females tend to be smaller in height, but are more powerful and are usually dominant- though in this species, dominance is not sex-linked, and there are both dominant females and dominant males.

These dragons tend to form close bonds with a single mate, maybe a small harem, and maybe one or two other friends, and do NOT enjoy large 'packs'- they are not good at sharing. They attract mates with their long, patterned tails and displays of fire breathing.

At hatching, they have the solid color of what will be their marking color later in life, which fades as they age. The oldest Pyralspites are purely the lighter under-color, and very sharp, clear markings are desirable, as is more contrast between marking and under-color. Because Almandines and Pyropes have similarly-colored markings, it is difficult to tell their hatchlings apart.

Pyralspites usually live high on cliffs in shallow alcoves, with just enough space to keep their gems safe in the back. They are mostly carnivorous but will opportunistically take fruit, and Almandines and Pyropes usually divebomb large prey at high speed from a high altitude. Spessartines often consume large amounts of fish, which they scoop up from the water's surface, rather than striking large prey.

Their wings are extremely powerful, both long and broad, and Pyralspites are rather agile in the air. The spines on their backs and their exceptionally hot fire breath are mostly a deterrent for any larger dragons or creatures that might try to prey on them. They also will use the spade on their tail as a stabbing weapon in a fight. They are more likely to take their gems and move than fight over territory, but if provoked enough while being chased out, will attempt to get rid of the aggressor with lethal force.

Pyralspites are somewhat neglectful parents, known to shove their own gemlike eggs into their garnet hoards and forget about them, and their eggs are very hardy and the hatchlings already fairly independent as a result. Hatchlings are allowed to share their parent's alcove until they can hunt on their own, at which point they most often leave willingly.

I love getting the details about dragons that aren't in the scroll definition. Thanks, TCA, for providing it.

Very pretty! Can't believe I entirely missed this release... That's what I get for not logging in regularly. ^^;

...I'm guessing these are going to be pretty common, as I find them pretty easy to catch. Since a day or two after their release I haven't been able to go hunting without seeing one of them, especially in the Volcano.

I really adore the Almandines, and all the different personalities goes fantastically with my plan of naming them after friends!

Love the breed headcanons! Although, what exactly do these dragons do with their garnets? The breed description says that they can tell the varieties apart by how they taste so I thought that meant they eat the garnets but the additional information says they are mostly carnivorous but eat some fruit.

I think telling things apart by taste is another Homestuck reference - they lick the garnets to tell the colors but don't eat them, probably.

They just keep a ton of garnets and go "MAI SHINIESSSS." Also if they run into a Pyralspite of another kind, they'll trade garnets that don't match their type.

Hahaha. Sounds like a typical hoarding dragon. tongue.gif

LOL! Thanks for the additional background info!

Hm, I suppose this is just the beginning and there are other gem dragons in the making so that we're going to see some more after the holiday releases. smile.gif

Okay, I was right in saying that the Orange one would be my favorite! The Spessartine are definitely one of my favorite recently released dragons, pretty orange biggrin.gif.

It takes a bit of time, but they still drop often enough, so that they can be grabbed. Just have to stick around a biome for a while.

Just missed a Copper, though... >.< Before I even realized what it was, it was gone... *sigh*

Despite the fact that they don't have dimorphism, I think they're really lovely dragons. Haven't decided which variant is my favorite yet... ^___^

TJ had extra adults just to trick us.

Huzzah for falsely attributing malicious intent with no backing evidence or proof.

It was just an oversight.

Between the Homestuck reference some have mentioned and years without mistakes on your part, I thought it was more likely to be a prank than a mistake. Glad to know that wasn't the case (lame joke would be lame xd.png), thanks for letting us know what happened.

I was intending that to be in a more joking tone, but alright. Bad wording on my part, I apologize.

My eggs finally hatched, can't wait for them to gender. Even though they don't have dimorphism, they look so pretty I'm pretty tempted to do some kind of lineage with them.
