Plot and NPC Ideas

I'll keep track of plot and NPC ideas that we, as a group, either loved but haven't been able to implement yet, or rejected all together.

Notes of Absence

Please inform me (via this thread or pm) if you won't be able to post (much or at all) and I'll keep track of it here. That way we'll know when to expect you back and rejoice.

Looks like we've been approved, so it's time to sign up and send in those character sheets!

Alright! Everyone who reserved a spot has sent in a sheet smile.gif.

If no one reserves a new spot today (Thursday), I'll make the first IC post on Friday for those of us who like to forumplay whilst at school or work (bad! bad!). Otherwise, we start on Saturday.

Marcus Pheonix sent me another Firefly blueprint. By comparison, we're currently using this one.

I'm in the process of rewatching the show, so I'll see which one matches better. Any input on the matter is also welcome, so let me know if you think either set is better.

Incidentally the 'Star Trek version' only has room for eight (5 crew cabins, 2 passenger cabins*, 1 shuttle-to-rent) as opposed to nine in the wikia version (4 crew cabins, 4 passenger cabins, 1 shuttle-to-rent). That would mean we're already full-up if we go with the ST version, so I've closed applications for now. We wouldn't be able to take on new people in the middle of a raider attack anyway wink.gif. If we stick with the wikia version, I'll re-open applications once we get to a place where new characters could join.

(* In the pilot episode, Mal takes on 3 passengers: Simon, Book and the federal agent. So that's a mark against the ST blueprint.)

Now that we have a full house I'll start with the opening post. I'll also send out a round of PMs in case people miss it. (After this, I won't be PMing anymore since I don't want to spam your inboxes, so make sure to check regularly or subscribe to the thread(s)!)

EDIT

I've found several Firefly lay-outs online and used them to create this one for the Harmony. I've also assigned quarters:

- Captain Nadir goes in the largest crew quarter on account of it's her ship.

- Xiao would have offered to trade rooms (since she doesn't have many belongings and doesn't need much space) as new people come aboard, so she goes in the smallest crew quarter

- Pilot Jay, Weapon Specialist Jake and Mechanic Nelson go in the remaining crew quarters (assumed to be the same size).

- Since we're now fresh out of crew quarters, Hydroponist Suren get passenger quarter 2 (not 1, to grant some privacy to people in the infirmary). I think this is also slightly closer to the hydroponics bay and the same distance to the dining hall than the crew quarters.

- Passenger Atlanta gets passenger quarter 3.

- Companion Athena, having the money and in need of privacy, rents shuttle 1.

Note: They're a little disparate on the map, but I would assume passenger quarters to be the same size as the average crew quarters.

Since Atlanta is a Junior Scientist - would it be outside the realms of possibility that Suren has drafted her to help out in Hydroponics?

Even if it isn't her chosen area of expertise?

Scratch that - I doubt the idea of a paying passenger also working on the ship would be a welcome one. At least, it could be considered an insult to the Ship's Hospitality.

I wanted to post "The only thing that was good about getting closer to the big ship was that it seemed they were also getting out of the fire arc of the cannons..."

Would that make sense? If they are forward facing guns, then getting attached to the belly of the ship probably means they cannot hit you anymore, right?

What do you think?

@ Takhesis - Teela would probably appreciate *some* paying passengers, yes. But she might be open to a work-half, pay-half deal. Xiao might appreciate a hand in the infirmary. And even if there is no pay involved, Atlanta might still pitch in here and there. Otherwise she'd just get bored.

@ Biologist - I'm fine with that. I'm deliberately leaving some characteristics of the ship blank so players can fill those in for themselves. I.e. Narath deciding it had guns and Marcus Pheonix deciding that the guns were mounted in a fix position. So if you want to add that there is a safe spot on the Bernard's docking side, go right ahead. We're building this story together.

I want Harmony to get a little banged up in this encounter, so here's my idea. At some point, Jay will have to choose between a VERY risky manoeuvre to avoid the asteroids, or going left of the Bernard. Either will lead to a small clash: a scrap of asteroid hitting, or the pirates landing a grazing blow with one of their guns. It'll be interesting to see which Jay chooses. (And of course, whatever he chooses, the alternative would have been worse - he is an ace pilot, so we wouldn't get hit unless he was getting out of the way of a greater danger.) My objective isn't to land us dead in space, but just to rock the boat a little (literally).

Thoughts and opinions?

That seems like a really cool Idea, my question is how would you say that would it be like: "Jay pulled Harmony to the right, risking the asteroid field, as he did he saw the unmistakable glare from the Bertrands cannons on its left side"?

I know its all up to Biologist but I'm just curious.

I'm all for some rocking! I think the dining area's pretty ready at least, haha :D

I have an unrelated question - I don't have a lot of experience with rp ettiquite so this could be a really outlandish request, and if it is please don't hesitate to tell me! Because we have two pairs of names that are quite similar (Jay/Jake and Atlanta/Athena - similar letters/sounds and lengths) I'm having trouble telling who is who without a great deal of going back and forth - is prefacing IC posts with character names/occupations something that is sometimes done?

Sure. I've never done that before, but I see no reason not to. So unless there are objections, we'll make that a thing.

Btw, did you see my post where Xiao asks Suren if the latter needs help?

Time for impact?

@ Takhesis, do you want Atlanta doing the calculations when we're hit, or Teela? If the former: feel free to take over the console in your next post smile.gif.

Hmmm eeeny meeny miny mo.

Atlanta at the controls would free the Captain up for anti-boarding procedures tongue.gif Assuming the Bernard can catch up to the faster Firefly.

I'm in the process of writing 'The Collision'. What do we want? Get away or be boarded?

Get boarded? That'll give the crew in the cargo bay something to do smile.gif. Maybe the Bernard has shuttles launched and one of them attaches to Harmony for boarding, even though Jay still manages to avoid the mothership.

So, we've cleared the field with damage. Whether we escaped at full burst or are dead in space, with dented hull and minor damage or with hull breach, boarded by another vessel or hit by a magnetic mine, I'll leave up to the next person smile.gif all options are still open...

Here's a little input for the next person to post.

IDEA 1: BOARDING PARTY

The metal clang that Jay heard in the cockpit, is much MUCH louder in the cargo bay. In fact, it comes from right outside the airlock doors. Should anyone go look, a ship has docked (forcibly, using a combination of magnetic grapplers and hooks). Five raiders, currently in the airlock of their ship, are trying to force the doors open. If they can't open the doors peacefully (or bully Harmony's crew into opening them) they will cut them open using some sort of welders. They have specialised equipment and experience doing that, so they might succeed. In that case, the Harmony might be better off opening her doors willingly, or they risk a hole in their outer lock. There might be more raiders waiting in the rest of the shuttle.

IDEA 2: HULL MINE

The Bernard launched a magnetic mine, which has attached itself to Harmony's hull. Their next tactic is simple: tell Harmony to surrender NOW, or they blow the mine (and our hull).

I'm fine with either, so ... next person to post can decide which way to take this?

I think the boarding party is better, keeps with the theme of run and gun (first the running now the gunning) it also means that the crew only has to face a party of the Bernards making it more believable if we win. Also it could allow for Jay to try and 'shake' em.

Alright. Do you feel like making the next post? Since Nelson is in the cargo bay, he'd be present to notice the attached shuttle and the raiders trying to get in.

Hes not in the cargo bay, he last ended in the engine room. That's the main reason I haven't posted.
