Shifters

Introduction

There is a world named Lorencia. It is populated by humans and dragons alike. After a Great War between the races, the wizards of the land decided to form a pact with the dragon elders. At the pinnacle of the world, where it is said that earth meets the heavens, grows a fruit. The fruit is grey and rusty looking but is said to taste like raspberries. Many of these grow from a single tree, enduring the elements and extreme cold high up. This tree is called the tree of shifting. As part of the pact, only the bravest, fastest, smartest or stupidest humans and dragons in the land will scale the mountain, reaching the fruits. Once they take the first bite, they become a shifter. The fruits cannot be taken off the mountain, or legend dictates they will release suffering upon the land.

The dragon-human pact

This pact was forged by master wizards and the twelve oldest dragons known to Lorencia. They gave their life to tap into the magical energy required to make such a huge spell. The pact entails that all humans and dragons are bonded for the rest of time, and if any large scale conflict occurs between the two races, the forces of magic will purge both races from the face of Lorencia. To link them further, the pact contains a spell that allows humans and dragons to shift. (See below.)

Shifters

Shifters are humans or dragons who can change form, for example, a human who can turn into a dragon. The result of your shift is chosen the moment you bite the fruit: for humans, they can change into one dragon which they desire to and have to take another bite to change back; dragons change into humans and, their appearance as a human varies according to their personality and species. Apart from gaining immortality, the most special thing about shifters is their regenerative ability. If one of them is badly hurt as a human, with all their limbs cut off, assuming they are strong enough to call forth the power to turn into a dragon and back, they can fully regain all lost limbs. Shifters have a high status in society and usually have their wings and tails extended in human form to let the world know of their power and status. As a result, many crippled people, power hungry tyrants, and heroes scale the mountain for their own gain.

The fruit of shifting

This fruit was created after a war thousands of years ago. A group of wizards and dragons used a spell to forever link human and dragon-kind together to prevent further conflict. Since it was those two parties that were most active in the war, the other races were not given the ability to shift.

The mountain

The mountains are dangerous. Cold, frigid and full of beasts, traps and obstacles, only the best can scale the mountain and gain the status of shifter. Orcs and other races that have become jealous of the humans and dragons usually camp out on the mountains, ready to stop any potential shifters. The mountain takes about two months to scale. Many creatures living there are edible and serve as a food source.

Note: Your characters do not have full knowledge of the mountain. This is for reference. Unless they have a map, they can't have much knowledge as the shifters do not disclose much about the mountain. Except for the colossus and the inhabitants of the mountain.

The mountains are split into eight parts.

1: The base

This is the first part of the mountain. Grass and pine trees grow here. The temperature here is slightly chilly and herbivores graze here.

2: The slope

The second part of the mountain suddenly grows steeper with many ledges. The cold is significantly stronger and the grass is covered by thin snow. More resistant herbivores and several small carnivores live here. Usually, Orc raiding parties reach this part.

3: The crags

The third part boasts a significant number of large, rough icicles embedded in the ground. How they got there is unknown, but they are almost unbreakable by non-magical means. Many pits are present here, and an unlucky adventurer may be impaled through them if he falls. No animals live here, although some may cut across from other parts. The cold increases here with light winds and snow falling constantly.

4: The Orkram

In native orkish, The Orkram means "Orc keep". The whole pass cuts through an orc village. The orcs are strong and resilient. Although if you give them ample gifts, they may let you pass with only a missing finger or two. They have a habit of attacking unless a white flag is raised.

5: Dwarfhold

This part of the mountains is inhabited by dwarves. The first portion is lined with pits, mines and dwarven traps. All of these are non-magical, and are either technological or explosives. The dwarves are bitter rivals with the orcs due to territorial disputes. They have a certain degree of respect for dragons, but won't tolerate them climbing the mountain. They currently have a shaky alliance with the Orcs to fight against the humans trying to climb the mountain. (Thanks for the idea Drakonspite!)

6. Magi Keep

This part of the mountain is inhabited by magi dragons and their kin. It is a safe haven for any of the weary travelers that have climbed up the mountain. This area is fairly cold, but not as cold as the pinnacle is, and the winds here are more of a mild temperature. Small houses and huts are set up with fish that come from the nearby spring, and the place is cozy and warm once inside the boundaries of the keep. The magi here are more focused on trading with humans, elves, and the other races except for dwarves since they tend to destroy their mountains.

7: The Well Of Sorrow

A deep pit within the side of the mountain, so deep that is actually a giant tunnel; one should be careful going down this pit: it is called the Well of Sorrow for a reason. The wind and coldness cannot reach one here, but what they must be worried about, are the whispers that come from the walls. The inside of the well is a smoldering temperature that will play tricks on the mind, the holes within the well make it sound like people are whispering. This whispering tends to trigger a reflex in the mind, making a person believe they are going through a sorrowful memory that they wish not to remember, or making an illusion to where they are in a sorrowful situation to where they’re at fault. A person who is weak in mind, body, and heart will not make it through the well of sorrow alive, and will become one of the many decomposed corpses that live inside.

8: The pinnacle

The very top of the mountain. Only one thing lives here. the Colossus, a massive beast which is the final obstacle, it is unable to be killed, and has regenerative abilities far exceeding any other. Tales of its power are told throughout the land. Though it is impossible to kill, it can still be fought. According to shifters, the beast will bow to you once you have proven your power and will let you pick the fruit. The pinnacle touches the sky and as such is the coldest point in the world. Strong winds carry off anyone unfortunate enough to be lifted off the ground. Several shifters have claimed to have risen past the pinnacle and have seen a black, starry zone where strange, circular objects of different colours float.

Races of the mountain.

Humans: the most common inhabitants of the land. They are able to shift and have no special abilities apart from certain humans having magic.

Dragons: Massive, usually winged, reptiles. They also share the power of shifting. Dragons can speak telepathically to each other. Most dragons have faint magic with several species having higher magical abilities.

Elves: Living in the forests, (sorry about the cliche stereotype) they respect dragons and usually attempt to help them climb the mountain. Although they cannot shift, they respect those who can and usually offer their protective services to those who try to clear the mountain. However, some elves are jealous, feeling that they deserve the ability to shift more than humans. These elves will usually attempt to stop or kill mountain-climbers. Elves are usually agile and fast, with proficiency in magic.

Orcs: Huge, typically green creatures with horns and tusks. They are usually not very intelligent but make up for it with brute force. They have a deep-seated hatred towards elves. They will tolerate humans but usually don't like them. They dislike Dwarves because of territory disputes.

Dwarves: Tiny little men who inhabit rocky mountains. They have proficiency in mining and explosives. They are neutral towards every race except Orcs. They also will not tolerate humans trying to climb the mountain. This is because they think of the pinnacle as holy ground and do not appreciate foreigners treading on it. They dislike Dwarves because of territory disputes

Dragon descendants (half shifters): These beings are the offspring of a shifter and a non-shifter. They look like humans, except for the fact that they have wings and a tail sprouting from their backs. The wing type is dependent on the Shifter parent's wings.

Kobolds: Kobolds are lizard-men who are native to the mountain. They camp in the wilderness in many isolated tribes. They are skilled hunters and are good with animals. Legend tells of a group of shifters who acquired the fruit with the help of a Kobold who calmed the raging Colossus.

Beast folk: Beast folk are the result of a spell that went awry. They are mammals that grow to the size of a human, stand on two legs, and can speak. They live in human villages, the majority assimilating into other societies and the others living their lives as hermits.

(More races exist, feel free to make your own race as long as it isn't ridiculous. These are simply the races that frequent the mountain.)

Rules

1: Follow All DC Rules.

2: No Gary-Stus or Mary-Sues.

3: No Godmodding or Powerplaying.

4: NO killing other people's characters without permission.

5: Be nice.

6: You CAN be an undead dragon, neglected, paper, cheese, GON, dino - Basically, any dragon (excluding chickens, leetles and other non dragon/dino creatures). You just need to have a valid reason in your backstory.

7: If you want to create a monster or artifact that alters the world in some way (example, add a race of giant insect people, or a sword that is fatal to dragons) ask me before you go ahead with it.

8: No metagaming.

The story so far..

Setting:

(Where majority of the characters are)

Setting: The Lorencian national Inn

This building was built after the war. It is right in the center of the world, so every race can access it easily. The building itself took twelve years to be built, and is around the size of a large castle.

Though it does not have the fortifications or security of a castle, it is guarded by two royal crimsons, who make sure the travelers visiting the inn are never harmed by enemies. The interior consists of a main hallway, leading into a massive room. The room is split into segments for each species. There is a counter in the middle, where 70 barkeeps brew drinks and cook food for guests. There are high chairs for dwarves, gargantuan cushions for dragons, and various other furnishings for the comfort of all races.

There are rooms taking up the entire twenty floors above. about a quarter of the rooms are large enough for dragons to occupy, while another quarter are smaller so dwarves feel at home. The rest are regular sized, which will fit any human, orc or elf.

Due to the size and popularity of the inn, adventurers usually meet up here. Bar fights and thieves occur by the hundreds, but people still flood to the inn regardless.

Alright, so to start off, what I was thinking is, We could have something like everybody starting in an Inn, and then climbing the mountain as a guild. What do you guys think?

How could they be in an Inn? They are DRAGONS. We aren't aloud to shift to humans yet. Maybe they meet at some sort of dragon-kind meeting and decide to go on this voyage?

Yes they are DRAGONS but these DRAGONS also live in villages in some roleplays. I think starting in a meeting kind in the forest or somewhere accessible by ALL kinds of dragons. E.g, aquatic, desert...

Well, not just dragons, there are human characters too. In this world, all species live in harmony, so I think it would make sense to have a building accessible to every race. We could make an inn that's huge enough to accomodate the largest dragon or something.

That sounds good. Should we start?

(yeah, thanks. I've added it to the OP. Alrighty, without further ado, LETS START! WOOHOO!)

Ohzoc

Ohzoc darted between the elf's legs. The floor of the inn was bustling with feet. He jumped up onto a table where two orcs were talking. He snatched their mutton-loin and sprinted away. The orcs hadn't noticed. While disappearing food was a common problem, nobody seemed to mind. Which was good."OI. WHO TOOK MY MUTTON?" Okay, maybe he was wrong about that.. He ran to the main counter where a burly elf was pouring drinks."One strawberry cocktail, please."

Kori walked through the tavern, flicking her black tail. She was well known here, to starting fights, and always winning them. She lifted a paw onto the counter, not noticing the crimson pygmy next to her. "The usual please," she growled as she swung her tail, knocking the pygmy to the floor. Kori snarled, teeth bared. "Out of my way, hatchling," she threatened as the elf gave a bowl of meat with shaky hands.

Ohzoc

"I'm not a hatchling.." He grumbled. He hopped back up onto the counter and sipped his cocktail. "Jerk." He slid the empty glass over to the dwarf polishing the cups on the other end of the counter. He flew up and hovered above the crowd. The tavern was full of people, as usual. But he was only interested in a bulletin board on the far side. He flew over and pinned a piece of paper to the board."Seeking companions to climb mountain with." He waited by it for someone to take up the offer. Stupid jerks.. Once I become a shifter, they won't dare to make fun of me anymore... He puffed out a minuscule wisp of smoke and sat down.

"Get a life, weakling," Kori snarled, batting a clawed paw at the crimson. It flew away as she snarled, drawing attention. "What do you want?!" With a snarl she clawed deeply in an orc's face. The others backed away. Kori stalked towards the board, no need to shove. The crowds parted for her as she stood next to the pygmy again.

"You again," she growled as she inspected the writing. "You thinking of going, hatchling Sunstone?" Kori teased, thrashing her tail angrily.

"WHEEEE!!!!" Chai shouted happily. A vine was wrapped around her body as her friend, the vine swung her around and around. Finally, he placed her down to the ground. "Fun, fun," she grinned as she crept into the leaves of Dezmeri. She lay down gently against the soft grass, the vines wrapped back into their usual, protective spot. "We got one," Dezmeri rumbled. Chai opened an eye to inspect the next target. A large rabbit. The cheese hatchling moved herself to stand as a large leaf began to fan her scent towards the rabbit.

It began to head towards the vine, when a venus flytrap picked up the creature in a swift motion. Chai watched in fascination as the rabbit became limp and as Dezmeri began to eat it. She never liked food. Didn't taste like anything. Dezmeri said that he would die if he didn't eat. But she rarely ate and never died.

"I'm not a hatchling sunstone! Why does everyone assume that?" He lifted his tail and rubbed it in the Dorsal's face."YOU SEE THIS? YOU SEE MY TAIL? No stone on it. NO FRIGGIN STONE." He pulled his tail back. he lowered his head, before raising it slightly and muttering:"You're racist..."

Bleu Thorn

Thorn walked around the Inn. The wyvern dragon wanted to check out her surroundings. She passed other dragons and humanic creatures. She snorted at hatchlings and nodded respectfully to elves. She wanted to be peaceful and not engage in fights. Eventually, she came to an area on the floor that was covered in sunlight. The brown, white and blue dragon laid down on the ground and snorted again.

(Randomly generated a dwarf name to use as a character. This is the weirdest name I've ever come across...)

Mane

Mane blew his matchstick out as the dragon fled. "OI! Coward, taste dynamite yer mangy lizard!" He tossed the stick with precision and it hit the dragon, blowing up. The dragon coughed the smoke out if its mouth and fled further." That'll teach yer." He stepped into the tavern and ordered a barrel of mead.

Xeon and Lucain wounder around for a bit before find the inn that hold the Seachers of the Shift fruit. They saw the dwarf throw a stick of dynimite and it exploding on the dragon. "Are you sure this is the right Inn Xeon?" Lucain asked as he watch the dragon flee from the inn. "According to what old man said this is it." Xeon said as he walked forward to the Tavern. Even thought Xeon is human he still very much have a big weapon on his back, and armor to protect him. They walked into the Inn or tavern as many called it to see dragons, human elfs and dwarf alround. "I wonder were we find a group to go to the top of the mountain out of all this crazyness." Xeon said as he look around.

Shade

6 beers, 4 meat and rice platters, 2 beef stakes, and...9 more beers. Shade knew this wouldn't end well, but he handed out the glasses and plates without complaint.

The tavern was surprisingly calm today actually, no fights have broke out... yet, there was a small explosion to the left, so something had to happen soon, probably with the help of those beers.

He set some food down on a table of humans, so his tail-shield was empty of weight, and slowly trotted back, careful not to step on anyone. As he did he noticed the two new comers, a silver dragon and a human wielding a huge weapon on his back.

The royal crimson dragon leaned down and stared into Xeon's eyes." Don't remember seeing you around these parts. Definitely not a regular." His friend on the opposite end of the door glared at Lucian." Make sure you don't cause trouble." He growled. With a gentler tone, the other dragon said" Welcome to the Lorencia national inn." They stepped to the side to let them pass. "One last thing. Don't order the mystery meat. Just don't."

((You didn't PM him with your application, did you? I see it here in the thread, which was not how we were supposed to apply.))

Eve and her twin sister Kat rode up to the Inn on their horses. They had been here many times before, offering their services to the travelers who wished to brave the mountain for their shifting powers. Eve huffed slightly, inaudibly, as they approached. Stupid humans...can't hardly do the journey by themselves...what right do they have-- she began seething to herself, but Eve's thoughts were interrupted by her sweet sister glancing over at her, and she forced herself to plaster a fake smile on her face. *sigh*

As they reached the inn, they tied their horses to the hitching post that had been erected for them a few months ago. "Well, my lovely sister," she said cheerfully to Eve, "Shall we see who we can help today?" She smiled and wound her arm through Eve's arm, pulling her along and into the inn.

(Yeah, she's right. PM me forms. I actually PMed you a few minutes after seeing your form. You didn't reply.)

Mane

(Still don't know why that name appeared in the dwarf-name generator.)

Mane took a sip of mead. "Delicious! I like this new drink!" He slammed the mug onto the ground, splintering it. "Another!" He looked around at the other people drinking. He noticed a few people walking in. The elves who had offered their services to a few people, and two newcomers. He felt around his pouch."Dammit, out of dynamite." He opened his pouch. "No gunpowder either.." He shook the contents of the pouch out. A pathetic mound of gunpowder appeared on the table. Sighing, he blew at it, and the gunpowder flew around the table. "Gonna need to climb soon.. Get more boom-sticks.."

((Why don't you use Garvan Pureiron, it a Dwarf name.))

Xeon and Lucian thanked the pair before heading into the Tavern. They look around for anyone looking to get to the top of the mountain to the shifter fruit. It seems people was interested in the fruit as well, but they want something that was priceless, the views and the adventure of making it to the fruit. They sat down at a table with a dwarf at it. There was gunpowder on the table and around it. "So what your plan for the shifter fruit?" Xeon asked. Lucian was keeping quite and to himself, with his tail curled around him so no one steps on it.
