Pottermore

Recommended Posts

So since Pottermore discussion has been flooding the HP topic, and because there's likely to be spoilers of new information in the site, here's a topic devoted entirely to Pottermore.

I'll try to update this first post with information as I go along, but for now, here's a few links:

Pottermore website

Pottermore Insider (blog about Pottermore)

For those who don't know about Pottermore, it's a new text-based RPG of sorts where you can make a character who goes to hogwarts during the school years in the books (so in book 1, you're a first year). Your journey through Hogwarts often weaves into the story of the books with Harry and his friends and their adventures, but there's also plot points that weren't in the books that you as a third party character can experience. It's recommended that you read the books (or at least watch the movies) before you enter Pottermore, as it's meant to enhance the reading experience.

Currently, entrance into the beta is closed, so anyone who hasn't signed up will have to wait for Oct. 1st to experience Pottermore. Those in the beta, I recommend you hide plot point spoilers in white text for those that don't want to be spoiled.

So discuss Pottermore here. What house are you hoping to get into? What classes are you interested in? Any characters that you would like to see have more backstory?

And remember, don't tell any muggles about this topic. ;P

THE WAITING IS KILLING ME. D:

I'm trying not to look at any spoilers though. I don't wanna see anything 'til I get to the site myself. :3

I am so excited that I'm literally sitting here trying not to squeal, because my fiance is asleep, so instead my throat is just closing up. I'm pathetic.

ANYWAY. I'm really hoping to get Slytherin, if you couldn't tell. I just really feel that it fits my personality the best.

Also, I reallyreally hope for info on Lily && the Marauders. We don't get very much information on them. For instance, what made Lily change her mind about James? What could make little Peter Pettigrew, Gryffindor, turn against his best friends in such an awful way? I don't just believe he was a coward, or else he wouldn't have been in Gryf in the first place.

But moving on, I'm really excited for the sorting, and for the wand selection. Here is some information that has been released about that. It's obviously another questionnaire, but part of it is physical, since things like height matter in wand choice. I sort of hope for Unicorn hair or maybe something we haven't heard of before for my core. And I prefer darker woods (I bought Sirius' wand from Wizarding World, and my second choice was Ginny's).

I hope the beta testers get in soon. I got in on the first day, so I'm hoping I'm not last to get in the actual site, haha I just wish there was a more specific timeline, other than "end of August"...some people think it'll all start September 1st, since that's when the Hogwarts Express leaves, but I really hope it's earlier than that.

I've heard mid-August for Pottermore beta opening, so maybe as soon as the 15th?

Anyways, about Lily and the Marauders... I could easily see Lily and James being a kind of "slap slap kiss" relationship, probably a lot like Ron and Hermione (only with James being more talented and boisterous than Ron), and plus, I think them being in the same house kinda helped her relationship with him as opposed to her relationship with Snape in which they'd likely have different classes and of course different Common Rooms to hang out in. As far as Peter, I think he has an interesting parallel with Neville. Both of them had hidden courage, but unlike Neville, rather than digging deep and resisting Voldemort, even at the cost of his own life, Peter let fear take over (which is why Sirius and Remus were so upset with him, out of everyone, they thought he was the most responsible (like Neville)). Eventually though, he ended up realizing his courage and defied Voldy by letting Harry go, and lost his life for his defiance. Otherwise, I'd say maybe he knew the others and wanted to be in the same house as them, or his family had a legacy of being Gryffindors and he felt obligated to do the same...

It'll be interesting to get info on them... :B

Ehh, but the sorting hat doesn't only take family history or desire into account, or else Lily'd have been in Slytherin with Snape and/or Sirius would've been in Slytherin like his whole family. Peter had to deserve being a Gryf, at least in some way. But yes, I'd just like a lot more information about them, all of them.

And yes, you're right. The email states "We will activate your account between mid-August and the end of September," so it could be any time now.

By family history I meant "His whole family was X House and he would feel pressured to do the same", kind of like how Ron's family was Gryffindor and he was relieved to get into Gryffindor. I doubt that the House you're sorted into is something that's in the blood, just something that might influence your desires (kind of like second generation college kids might be pressured into going into the same college or frateriny/sorority as one of their parents).

And Lily might've liked to be in Slytherin with Snape, but she probably didn't have an overwhelming desire to. Besides, the hat could have talked to her, telling her she had more potential in Gryffindor than in Slytherin with Snape, and she might have agreed with it, kind of the opposite of Harry (after all, the Sorting Hat knows your potential best). There really isn't much to go on as to "why they weren't in the same house" or "why Peter was deemed brave enough to be a Griffindor", which I hope Rowling delves into more detail, even if she just gives us an idea of how sorting works or how common it is for the Sorting Hat to have a mental debate with the wearer (or if it even needs to debate).

I dunno, from what I've heard it seems that "hat stalls" like Harry's Gryf/Sly thing aren't exactly common. We only know of a few, outside of Harry. Most characters are sorted within seconds of putting on the hat. If Peter was always a coward at heart, the hat wouldn't have cared if he wanted to be in Gryffindor. His cowardliness would've outweighed his desires.

Speaking of hat stalls, McGonagall was one of those characters we know of, and her history might be interesting. Apparently we were supposed to know about some secret heartbreak of hers, but it got edited out because it never fit. I think JKR said that'll be one of the tidbits we find on Pottermore.

I did not, and I am so frustrated. I stayed up all freaking night and got in on the first day, and I don't get in, meanwhile people on tumblr are like wahh I got Slytherin but I wanted Gryffindor and I'm like, you should be happy to even be IN, let alone in the best house. And classes start Wednesday, so after today I'll have classes and homework to do. Ugh

On the up side, they go into detail about wand lore when one chooses you, and Merlin was a Slytherin. So...

I don't think Lilly would have been in Slytherin. She was a muggleborn and Salazar hated them. Since the sorting hat was bewitched to take certain conditions into consideration; bravery, intelligence, etc then it could also have been enchanted to consider heritage. For three of the houses this wasn't a big deal, but for Slytherin it was.

I may be wrong of course. Has there ever been a muggleborn in Slytherin?

Arg, it is a bit frustrating just waiting to be let in while other people get to complain about their house. x3

~

Just a quick grab from the wiki, it seems there were, though rare, Fortune. :3

The Sorting Hat claims that blood purity is a factor in selecting Slytherins. This suggests that it bases its decisions more upon the views of its members than on any accurate test of a student's lineage. Muggle-born Slytherins exist, but are very rare, as noted insultingly by Scabior the Snatcher.

Ah. In that case I will humbly accept my mistake.

I wonder how Salazar let that one slip through though.

Aww, that's horrible. I was sure that first-day winners would get in right away!

I also stayed up like all night, but I only got in on Day 3. So it'll probably still be a couple weeks for me. *sigh* Patience. Not my best quality.

It's just, no one knows when the next set of emails are going out, and there's no order whatsoever, so I could have gotten an account on the first day and still not even get in until the end of September. It's really frustrating. What was even the point of spreading it out over seven days and making the clues easier as they went if getting in first didn't give you any benefit?

Plus, everyone is posting spoilers everywhere, and I've got really low self control when it comes to this sort of thing.

I wish they would at least tell us, you know, "sucks to be you, you get in on September 23rd!" so that we wouldn't all be checking our emails like lunatics.

Wait, there's no order? Are you sure? That's crazy! It should be first come, first serve. I'd rather know that I'm going to be in the middle than possible end up at the end.

Wait, there's no order? Waaaaaat? That's pretty lame and a pretty lame build up for how the contest went. =\

I'm genuinely curious. Can anyone tell me why there was major hype over this website? I could not understand what in the world was going on when people were signing up for it X3

I agree, the no order thing is BS, but no, I signed up first day and am not in, but people who signed up on day 6 or 7 ARE in. So, it's random.

How do you sign up? I could never seem to figure that out. >.<

Well, it isn't officially open until October 1st, but there were 7 days of a sort of trivia contest, where if you submitted the right trivia question (each day corresponded to the appropriate number book) quickly enough, then you could register early and be one of 1 million "beta testers." So, if you missed that, then you can't register until October first.

At first it was because we didn't know what it was going to be. There were a lot of theories, like a Harry Potter MMORPG (which I was hoping for), or the encyclopedia she's been promising, or an official Harry Potter social media site, or another book series set in the HP world (Marauders or Harry's children, perhaps). So, there was the excitement over "What is it?"

Then we all found out what it was, but only 1mil get in early to see it and it was a challenge, so there was the general excitement over the actual website, PLUS the thrill of the chase, so to speak.

All that is not even taking into account the absolute craziness of the Harry Potter fandom.

I'm actually kinda glad that the order is random... I mean, I got in the second day, so it's not like being in order would hurt me or anything, but the first 3 days were overwhelmingly filled with European (and specifically British) participants. This way, by mixing it up, there's no bias towards the people who had time zones favoring them in the first days.

Actually, I was on tumblr the whole time, and a LOT of USA kids were staying up until unGodly hours of the morning, but I get what you're saying. I hadn't considered it that way, but if it went first come, first serve, Europeans would have an advantage...huh.

I see where you're coming from, but I'm from America and I worked my butt off trying to get in on Day 2. When I failed that, I tried again and got Day 3. I think the fans who were hardcore enough to find the hard clues and get in on the first couple of days should get to go in first.

I mean, I reread the second and third books in preparation for answering the clues. I worked for, like, two straight days on that!

I stayed up until 4 am when it opened the second day to get in... not that I'm not usually up that late...

The point still remains that the overwhelming majority of people who got in on the first few days were from a specific region that the time slots favored, which is bad. I hate it when they pull this crap in the states expecting everyone else in the world to be up in the middle of the night to be a part of it (like live internet broadcasts to fans of a series), so I also don't much like it when they do it there too. In this case, not everyone can be favored with the time slots, but at least they staggered them a bit to allow everyone else to have a chance, and with the random order, at least since people got into the beta, the order isn't based on "who got the better time slot/was able to stay up half the night" (keep in mind, this IS a children's/young adult series, not everyone is going to be able to stay up ungodly hours) and is just the luck of the draw.

And no fan is more important than any other fan, whether you followed the series from Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone coming out in bookstores, or just got into it a few weeks ago, saw all of the movies or have only read the books, got into the beta on the first day or were the last one to get in, all fans are equal.

After all, fan purity, like blood purity doesn't mean you'll be a great witch or wizard. tongue.gif

I am embarrassed to admit that I have never heard about that website before I have read this thread.

However, I am glad to know that the website will be opened for everyone in October. *quickly jots it down in her calendar*

Well, perhaps I will end up in Slytherin. Why?

Gryffindor -> I am not very brave and daring. So I would not fit. I always have to think of every possible outcome of a situation before I act.^^

Hufflepuff -> I can be nice, but only to the people I like. A Hufflepuff values fair play and are non-judgemental. I doubt that it applies to me, but perhaps it is not impossible.

Ravenclaw -> Those are for the intelligent people, not for someone like me who has to ask someone for every little thing. xd.png

Seeing that I do not fit in those three, the last one which remains is Slytherin. xd.png

Ravenclaw isn't necessarily for smart people, it's just for people who value intelligence and wit. People who like learning new things. I don't consider myself to be particularly genius (though I don't think I'm stupid), but I think the chances are high that I could end up in Ravenclaw. I hate learning...like, anything, but I love to read and I really look down on dumb people, sometimes.

I think that I could go Slytherin or Ravenclaw, but I'd very much prefer to be in Slytherin...I would be very very surprised if I got Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. I just do not relate to those qualities at all.
