Plot:

You are a shape-shifter, a chimera, an animal walker, whatever term that's used to describe a human capable of taking the form of an animal. But, don't get cocky. You can only shift into one particular animal. This is usually determined by your personality but it can be based on your heritage, the strength of your mind, or whatever else.

There's something else about you but you can't yet figure it out. Maybe if you did some self-searching or, ya know...

Maybe if you took out some strange, cat-like creatures. They're about the size of any other domestic cat with sleek black fur, glowing yellow eyes, and a floating little bobble at their tail tip. This bobble varies by shape and color but not size (about the size of a golf ball). Around their necks hangs a charm that matches their bobble and the marking on their forehead.

No one knows what such adornments mean just yet but there is the realization that some of these match the birthmark on your chest where your heart is. It's up to you, and the rest like you, to figure stuff out and connect dots.

Something is coming and, whether you like it or not, you're involved.

Rules:

  1. You know the basic rules. No godmodding/powerplay. No flaming others. Don't kill characters without permission. All of the don'ts that you guys should know.
  2. There is going to be a minimum post length requirement. Five (5) complete sentences per post. Anything less will earn you a strike. You've got three before being removed. I do understand writer's block but I will not accept it as your excuse every other post. If you don't have the time to post, don't post until you do.
  3. Everyday activity is not required. Though favored, even I have a busy schedule. So, if you at least post once every few days, you're okay. Please, let me know if you will be unable to make a post for any extended period of time.
  4. You'll be allowed up to 2 characters max but they cannot be related in any shape or form. This includes romantic partners.
  5. Your characters will be adults between the ages of 25 and 45.
  6. Do not think about touching the strange kitty cats. I've plans for them but you won't be left hanging for long.
  7. Everyone will be starting off in their new home: a mansion that can accommodate everyone.
  8. No mentally unstable, overly dark, all around tragic, or anything-else-of-the-sort types. Please. Those tropes are just so old. I want people, not cliches.
  9. Animals are to be unique. If someone already has it, you cannot claim it. Additionally, try to be original. There are far more creatures ruling this planet than just wolves, ravens/crows, and lions.
  10. Weapons will not be allowed for your characters when you apply.
  11. Anything I say goes. You are free to explain things you had in mind but if I say "no", that is that. This means you will need to PM me first if you have any big ideas.
  12. Please post character sheets here in the OOC or send them to me via PM.
  13. I will likely add or remove things as this thread develops.

Information

Setting

It's the modern age, present day Somewhere of Some Country on planet Earth. You live in a big, bustling city. Now, either you've lived there all of your life or you've moved in at some point. Don't matter. You're there now doing whatever you do.

However something - some kind of pull - has started to attract you. It's been happening for a few weeks now and you've found yourself outside a fairly well-kept mansion at the far outskirts of the city. Whether you intended to come here on purpose or not, you've found yourself at its big front doors.

This place is lived in but not by some obscenely rich family. No butlers greet you at the doorway, no maids have samplers and drinks set out. Nothing like that. Just a seemingly random group of strangers who are fellow shapeshifters like you.

This is where you'll be from now on. You can still live an average life, going to work, running errands, or attending classes. But at the end of the day, you'll find your feet stepping onto the cobblestone pathway leading to the doors.

Shape Shifting

You can only change into one animal. This shifting is free to happen at your choosing. However, there is no stopping in between. You're either fully human or you're fully... whatever your animal is. This changing is uncomfortable. Not painful, but certainly uncomfortable. You feel everything that changes. Additionally, whatever injuries you have in one form carries through to the other as long as the part exists. If it doesn't exist in one shape, then you merely feel a ghost of the pain. Had a fluffy tail get cut? Your tailbone in human form will throb a bit. Lost some hair to a fiery accident? Your lovely feathers will be singed. However, healing is faintly accelerated by about three times the normal and continues to occur even if the injury is nonexistent as a human.

Anything that isn't naturally part of your human body will be lost when you shift. Piercings, tooth fillings, clothes, and everything similar will be affected. Too big? Clothes will tear and piercings will rip flesh. Tattoos as well. The ink will stretch with the skin and be ruined as a result. Too small? You'll be drowning in fabric, piercings will still fall out, and tattoos will wrinkle up.

Now, there is a weak form of telepathy that becomes usable as an animal. Except, it's imperfect and difficult to get a message through. Imagine a radio station with lots of static. Communication can only be done through the animal's own form of speech or through this sketchy telepathy. In both cases, you'll just have to hope the others understand you well enough.

Soulless

These are the strange, cat-like creatures. You don't know much about these things yet. However, you've come to realize that only you and the others at the mansion can see them. And they're everywhere. Thing is, they aren't really causing any trouble so they're not a big concern. Right?

Wrong.

Bad things happen around these creatures. Some like to label the occurrences as strokes of bad luck. It's hard to say though. All that's known is anything they touch tends to malfunction or not work as intended. Piano being hoisted up to a high floor on a tall building? If a Soulless is sitting on it, be sure to know that the instrument is coming down.

Outside of that, Soulless don't seem to do anything else. They seem to mind their own business, walking aimlessly about the city.

Given enough "research", you'll find out more about them and what to do with them.

Accepted Characters

Username: Narvix

Birth Name: Jacobs, Henry (L)

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Everyone just calls him Jacobs.

Age: 29 years

Gender Identity: Male

Appearance: Henry could be considered lanky, standing at about 6’2” in height. He has meat on his bones but not much else. His elbows and shoulders are bony, making it a bit uncomfortable for anyone to bear their weight on said joints. His face is faintly triangular, giving his jawline and chin a sharp appearance. Light brown-blonde hair falls in messy strands across his forehead and down to the base of his ears. Henry’s eyes, blue in color, rest beneath straight eyebrows with very little arch and on either side of a narrow nose. The beginnings of a mustache and beard surround his thin lips. His skin tone is light but not pale with exposure to sunlight. With long arms but an average length in his legs, Henry has nimble fingers on trembly hands. He prefers wearing striped t-shirts or solid-colored polo shirts with heavy jeans and sneakers.

Personality: First and foremost, Henry is loyal; practically to a fault. He trusts much too easily and finds it difficult to turn his back on someone, even if they proved to be untrustworthy. This loyalty is highly due to his active pursuit for company, to his frantic avoidance of being alone. He depends greatly on the presence of others, feeling much safer as part of a group than as an individual. This, in turn, fuels his desire to even remain loyal to those who have hurt him with the belief that they would protect him in their own manner despite their actions. Given his strong, and rather faulty, sense of loyalty, Henry has developed a poor sense of self-preservation when surrounded by those he calls friends. As such, it is a tricky ordeal to stand up for himself while it is easy for him to be extremely protective of his friends.

His behavior is a very submissive one. Beginning to develop in early childhood, Henry has become practically incapable of making his own demands, focused more on pleasing someone else than requesting for his pleasure. For this, he can be relaxed and humorous or silent and waiting based on if someone wants him to shut up or not. Generally, if allowed to be as talkative as he chooses, Henry loves to talk and will run with whatever subject comes to mind. He takes insults towards his companions - joke or not - as a serious offense and won't hesitate to call you out on their behalf. He's not a truly aggressive person and can crack under any real amount of stress, resulting in him reverting to childish tantrums. Especially if he has to choose between two friends.

When you take away the loyalty piece, you can find that Henry is usually a mellow individual with a fear of the unknown. He is reluctant to go some place new, to try new experiences. Being around calm, quiet, people is his favorite place to be or, if he can't be around them, he's happy to at least be surrounded by individuals who won't try to hurt him. He sees the world as a frightening thing and will always want to stay in a place he knows is safe if given the chance. When caught with his mouth running, he can be enthusiastic for particular subjects or speak without a lot of prior thinking. However, in this easy-going state, Henry's dependent nature slips a bit and more of his own desires can be learned about.

History: Growing up, Henry had a wobbly relationship with his parents. While they fed, clothed, sheltered and got him educated, they didn't give him the emotional attention that he needed. Thankfully, his aunt picked up their slack in loving him and seeing to it that he got hugs, reassurance, encouragement, and the like that was important to his growing. The only downside to this was that his aunt was not there 24/7. His parents were physically demanding and required that he took care of what they asked from him before he could be allowed to call his aunt for any of his own troubles. This gradually lead to his development as a submissive individual. When his aunt was around, he was free to worry about himself before what his parents desired of him. Yet, every time she had to leave, he was left to feel like he somehow disappointed her.

School was a bit different but his thoughts and actions were relatively the same. With students picking on him or exploiting his loyalty and need for company, Henry couldn't pick from enemy or friend and so saw them all as friends. After all, kids were more willing to be around you if you treated them like a friend than something else.

After high school, he considered college and enrolled (mostly because of his parents' wishes) but eventually dropped out because of surprising situations. He discovered his shape shifting two terms into his college education when his father was yelling and berating him for some mistake he'd made. Terrified of what happened, Henry fled and desperately tried to sort out the strange event. A few days later, he came upon the mansion.

Fun Tidbits?:

-- Henry has a love for fluffy things like socks, pillows, and blankets.

-- Baseball is his favorite sport to play.

-- He is allergic to cats and enjoys petting rabbits.

Animal: African Wild Dog

Birthmark Shape: Resembles a question mark.

Birth Name: Fitzburg, Larry (G)

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Larry

Age: 43 years

Gender Identity: Male

Appearance: A bit on the portly side, Larry isn’t very tall. He stands at about 5’4” with thick limbs, neck, and face. His hair and eyes are dark in color while his skin tone is faintly tanned. Short and knobby fingers attach to rough, dry, hands. His face is rounded with a deep-set brow making his eyes look sunken above his cheekbones. The bridge of his nose appears to possess a bump in the center and widens at the base, giving his nostrils a permanently flared look. Typically, he likes to wear large t-shirts of various brand names and designs with light-weight sweat pants and shoes.

Personality: Larry is very comfortable with himself; how he looks, how he dresses, and what his habits are. Often times, he can be quite loud and boisterous, laughing much during conversation. He’s learned to ignore or brush away the disapproving and go about doing what makes him happiest. He likes people, even if they’re being less than agreeable (though he’ll be more likely to make jabs at them than if they were cheery). In a room full of people, Larry is usually the first one to go around introducing himself and making friends over one commonality or another.

However, he doesn’t handle stress all too well. He eats when he’s upset about something, particularly snack items like granola bars or Gold Fish crackers. Additionally, his perspiration amplifies, leaving Larry to never go without some sort of handkerchief or napkin to mop his brow. Interactions don’t usually bring up stress for him. More often than not, his stress is due to being overworked, a less-than-pleasant situation, or trying to keep his… talent, hidden.

History: Larry was born in Italy but his parents were native to the States. Though he became fluent in Italian and English, Larry didn't care too much for the former language. While his birthplace was bright and beautiful, attractive to many a tourist, the only thing he really cared for was the food. Around 13 years of age, his parents decided on returning to the states. So, after three or four months of planning, searching, and packing, Larry found himself on U.S. soil to settle into a new home. He took well to the new region, becoming much more excited and wanting to be involved with his surroundings. He was lively at school, growing a large circle of friends and, similarly, enemies. Frequently, he went out and had fun times with the friends he made, the most favored activity being swimming in the public pools and terrorizing the employees or other visitors.

After high school, he didn't bother with college, preferring to take on the world instead of busying his days with further education. Remaining with his parents for a few years more, he found a job at a small thrift store and began saving funds for his own place. When he was able to afford it, Larry settled himself into a single-wide home on the outskirts of the downtown area. Until he was around 27 years old, this was his home. Some few months after his 27th birthday, Larry was stuck in the middle of an argument between a pair of friends. They were fighting over some heated, controversial, subject and sought his opinion as the sort of "tie breaker". Naturally, Larry showed his distress in the form of heavy sweating and the desire to snack ceaselessly. However, when he tried reaching for another granola bar in one of the kitchen cabinets, everything suddenly became much, much, bigger. Shortly after discovering his shifting, Larry was inexplicably drawn to a mansion on the edge of the city.

Fun Tidbits?:

-- Larry scratches his left elbow when he thinks.

-- His fingertips aren't as sensitive as they should be due to poorly-developed nerves.

-- His favorite snack is Gold Fish.

Animal: European Fire-Bellied Toad

Birthmark Shape: Splat-like star.

Username: TehUltimateMage

Birth Name: Mathews, Brooke

Age: 27

Gender Identity: Female

Appearance: Standing clumsily at a gangly 5'7 with dull brown hair cropped to her narrow shoulders, Brooke finds herself rather plain and unremarkable and dresses accordingly. Her skin is pale but peachy, with a smattering of freckles she wears proudly; and while she does not wear makeup, her skin and clothing is often smeared with paint or ink. Her usual attire consists of at least one large sweater of cotton or fleece, paired with either denim jeans or sweatpants.

Personality: Brooke is a perfectionist. She can spent hours toiling on a thing -- or for a person -- she shows particular interest in (namely fine arts and mythology). She is introverted and meditative, with an strangely accurate intuition which she has learned to trust. She is the type to stay quiet during discussions to observe rather than to input her own opinion, though it doesn't take much to render her strongly emotional. She doesn't like to tread on others' toes and is a friendly soul when people come and approach her, and will politely nod as she listens to your problems as she understands them. On the other hand, she has a strong sense of justice when she finds herself wronged, and the results of her rare outbursts are often devastating.

History: Brooke came out of school a few years ago with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, which she now decides was absolutely useless. Her family encouraged her to pursue a subject she loved at a higher level in the city, though in hindsight she felt she could have had the same growth without paying the money. Regardless, she was grateful that they managed the bulk of her student costs, being well-off and all. She rented a studio apartment in the city and lived there for a while, living frugally by herself with paint fumes and a pile of books as she worked on developing her art in an attempt to make it big. Her life as a post-graduate was relatively normal, until a fairly explosive fight with the landlord about clogged pipes which ended with a flopping fish and a man who was scared enough to pee his pants. Suffice to say, her leasing contract was terminated within the next week. Her frantic research on the nature of her transformation yielded no fruit apart from some myths and questionably sourced internet forum posts, and it didn't help that ever since, she had suddenly wanted to drive out to the country as if she were pulled. The gates of the mansion offered housing, at least, but there were still many questions she had that were unanswered.

Fun Tidbits?:

- Brooke reads a lot, but is rather careless with her books; she marks them, dog-ears them and cracks the spine. She finds it gives them some individual character.

- She likes to paint natural landscapes, though since she doesn't really have the opportunity to go out of the city often she makes due with drawing cityscapes and has gotten really good at that. She also does a fair amount of mixed-media.

- Her favorite movie is probably most likely the little mermaid.

Animal: Salmon (Pacific)

Birthmark Shape: Kind of an elongated pac-man shape.

Other: Brooke prefers her human form, obviously. And although her fish form is primarily suited to salt water, she can stay in freshwater for a limited amount of time.

Username: Ayesthine

Birth Name: Crewe, Harper (D)

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Harper, Harp

Age: 26

Gender Identity: Female

Appearance: ((a hippo tho (no not really)))

Harper is short (5’2”) and fairly sturdy, with broad hips/thighs and strong shoulders. Her figure could only be described as “voluptuous” or “curvy”, as she is definitely not waif-like or willowy. She is also far from square.

Since her body is naturally stout and thick-set, she works to keep herself fit and within a healthy weight range. The soft curves of her physique are offset by the muscle she has built up, which is maintained by regular exercise and ample opportunities to lift heavy objects for the elderly professors she works for. She could hardly be considered an athlete, but she is strong, healthy, and capable.

Her complexion is milky and clear with a tendency to be uncharacteristically rosy. Dark hair and eyebrows stand in direct contrast, which only serves to make her skin seem all the more pale. Her heart-shaped face is sweet and childlike- with her small nose, large honey-brown eyes, long black eyelashes, and pink cheeks- but her expression is frequently stormy and discordant. Her brown-black hair is long and wavy with auburn highlights, and she typically keeps it in a bun.

The majority of her wardrobe was bought with work in mind, so she has very few clothes that aren’t conservative or semiformal. She doesn’t “go out” with friends very often, so she hasn’t felt a need to buy anything besides her work clothes. Her attitude towards makeup is similar. Harper rarely, if ever, wears makeup, both out of fear of looking ridiculous and no real desire to put it on

Personality: Harper is predominantly a grump. She is, and never has been, bubbly or social. She keeps her problems to herself, covering her various insecurities behind her prickly attitude. While she was growing up she was instilled with the attitude that “life is not a game”, which has given her a deep sense of cynicism. It can be easy for her to be blinded by skepticism, making it difficult for her to understand that not everything or everyone is byzantine or conniving.

Her sense of humor is dry at best. Ignorance as a form of comedy has never appealed to her, which (coupled with her waspish attitude) makes her disagreeable company for people with bright, sun-shiny attitudes. Being intentionally foolish is a sure-fire way to incite her anger.

For the most part she is serious and down to earth, but goading and other provocations are a little more effective than she would like. Her temper is easy to inflame and she is fiercely argumentative, especially on subjects close to her heart. It’s difficult for her to recognize that an argument won’t necessarily change someone’s mind or help resolve anything. She tends to overreact and become unnecessarily aggressive (verbally, not physically) when she gets involved in a quarrel. She never intends to escalate things to white-hot temperatures, but that’s what happens anyway.

Surprisingly, Harper is very considerate and magnanimous. While she doesn’t show it openly, she believes that everyone has their reasons for doing things and, whether they are right or wrong, that is something that should be respected.

In situations outside of conflict, she is fairly reserved. She doesn’t enjoy being around people (specifically people she doesn’t know) all that much, and she prefers to keep her business to herself. It’s easy for her to avoid social or personal problems, trying to shove them under the carpet instead of deal with them in the open. Naturally she doesn’t like to admit it, but she is insecure about herself, her future, and the choices she has made. She wishes, consciously or not, to find someone she can be comfortable with, either in the form of a friend or a spouse. The relationships she made with her family, friends, and scattered crushes were never as deep an unconditional as the kind of connection she now craves.

History:Harper was raised in a large family. Her parents and siblings were loud and outgoing, but she wasn’t. She was both taught and felt from an early age that she should learn to take care of things herself, and (like the rest of her siblings) she was given ample opportunity to do so. Her parents weren’t neglectful or intentionally insensitive, but they did want their kids to build up “real-world” skills. They didn’t coddle their kids very much, and gave them every indication that life was something to take seriously.

During school, she has never very confident. She was shy and introverted, but she did make a few close friends. After that, she didn’t actively seek out new company, choosing to stick with her group. She never had an “official” SO and her crushes never developed very far beyond that. The same sort of thing happened in college; she stuck with her friends, never really met someone new, and didn’t have much of a “love-life”. She first discovered her ability to transform near the end of her college days, although at the time she thought it was less of an ability and more of a curse. Her aggressive temper made it difficult for her to keep her transformations under control, and she had a few close calls with some of her friends. She eventually drifted apart from the majority of her friend group, alienated by distance, career choice, and dissolving relationships.

Encouraged by her parents, she took her education seriously. She developed a taste for science, which her father wanted her to use to build a “real” career, something that would make her money and give her status. She disagreed, choosing instead to study the things that interested her more directly. Her family wasn’t overly wealthy, so she paid her way through college with a combination of government and college scholarships and various part-time jobs.

Eventually Harper graduated from college, and quickly took a position at a local museum. The responsibilities associated with the job weren’t clearly defined, so over time she became a general assistant (or pack animal) for the instructors at the museum. She found the job pleasant enough, and she was satisfied with what her work achieved. She never had any particular career aspirations, and her strange skill made any high-stress jobs even more unattractive, so the low-stress environment appealed to her. As she settled into her adult life, she found that she could control her transformations, and with a bit of practice, she was able to transform at will.

Fun Tidbits?:

-As a hippo, she’s roughly 3,500 lbs

-She lives with a friend from college in a small apartment. After she moves to the mansion, she’ll have little to no contact with her old friends

Animal: Hiphopopotamus

Birthmark Shape: A triangle. Illuminati 3 confirmed.

Other: Don’t make any clever comments about the fact that she turns into a hippo. She won't find it funny.

Username: Epyon

Birth Name: Castillo, Slater

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Slick

Age: 25

Gender Identity: Male

Appearance: Slick is an average height, about 5'9 with a toned, lithe build and deceptively rough but soft hands. He has a round shaped head but handsome facial features, with eyes that seem to pierce the soul. He has shoulder length jet black hair that he tries to constantly style to fit his ever changing tastes, though currently he has it swept over his left eye. He dresses for comfort and style, usually a nice shirt with the darkest denim jeans to suit his slender frame. At times he even wears a suit of leather.

Personality: Slick is an extrovert and very boisterous, but he is also very quiet and mischevious. He usually prefers to listen before he speaks and make a complete ass of himself. On the other hand, he carries himself to the highest expectations, instilling in himself a strong sense of honor and principles and often times berates himself when he makes mistakes, such as offending someone. However when it comes to talking to a certain someone, he can not find enough time to form a coherent sentence and instead trips over himself in his attempts to so much converse with them. Slick likes to be around people, he always is the first to start a conversation and has been known to be very gregarious in almost any situation. He is also a seeker of knowledge, when something piques his interest, he will go headlong to find everything about whatever it is he wants to know about. One thing that he had always felt was a strong desire to resolve a situation quickly but to do it thoroughly.

History: Slick graduated his university with two degrees: a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and a Bachelor’s in Law. He also found he had a love for the Culinary Arts, but growing tired of school after many all-nighters for the two Bachelors, he decided it would be more of a hobby. He currently works within a firm that specializes in family affairs and he found he rather liked the job. It gave him a good feeling because he was able to help reunite families, especially knowing that his cousin was wrongly placed into the foster system.

His first transformation began with him sitting in his nicely-furnished condominium in the better part of town, watching his favorite movie. As a scene came up where someone was being brutally tortured, he made a sound that reminded him of a tiger’s growl for his sense of honor was revolted at the idea of causing unnecessary pain and suffering. As he continued to watch, his growling sounded more and more like a tiger. As his rage built up, he changed. His body reformed with the pop of bones and the growth of white fur with black stripes. As he began to stand up, he found that he was walking on four legs instead of two. He stopped then and began to look around trying to understand. As he looked over his shoulder, he saw a long tail waving back at him. He cried out in shock and stumbled over thick paws. As he began to frantically debate his sanity, his feline form became human, clad in tattered and torn clothing. After the event, he searched the internet to find a possible explanation. Unfortunately for him, the only sources he found were questionable at best and surely the authors  had to be out of their minds! But what other options were there? Well, there was that pull he started to feel while out in the city....

Fun Tidbits?: Slick loves all things aquatic and will take any chance to go swimming. He also cannot go a while without reading a good book.  He likes to write or recite poetry to calm himself.

Animal: Siberian White Tiger

Birthmark Shape: It resembles a clawed paw

Other: He doesn't have much of a preference over his human or animal form, but he does like scaring people in his tiger form.

Username: Doctortear

Birth Name: Sayyam, Cullen (A)

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Cullen

Age: 27

Gender Identity: Male

Appearance: With the incredibly short height of 5’1” and a somewhat childlike face, it is not rare for one to confuse Cullen with that of a teenager. Needless to say, there are ways to identify Cullen with his actual age. His lanky build has gathered a collection of muscles over the years, leaving him with a muscular body. His shoulders are rather broad but his limbs are a tad short. His skin tone is tan to some extent with imperfections littering his entire body. He is a dark brunette with his messy hair ending at the nape of his neck. Small bundles of hair line along the top of his arms and an array of curly hairs also gather on his chest. His face is oval with stubble gripping the bottom of it. Cullen’s cheeks are round and plump with a reddish tint to them. His cheekbones are slightly lowered and his nose is crooked. His eyes are a dark brown with tendrils of caramel mixed within them.

Cullen’s attire consists mostly of clothing fit for a cold winter. An overly large jacket that has to wrapped around the young man multiple times just to make fit hangs on his frame. The dark brown jacket is layered with sienna fur mixed with cream on its shoulders. A red and black plaid shirt clings to his body. His curly, brown chest hair is exposed by the deep v neck of his shirt. His pants are denim most of the time, but Cullen will switch into thicker winter pants in cool weather. Black, leather boots latch onto his feet and climb up to a little below his knees. Cullen is not very picky about his clothing, though he insists on wearing his jacket, and cares little for his appearance. His hair is only combed if he remembers to brush it and his boots always seem to be coated with mud on the bottom.

Personality: Cullen was once the social butterfly of his neighborhood but became more secluded from others when he reached adulthood due to an unhealthy relationship in his past. Being charismatic is not unfamiliar to him although he doesn’t practice it as much as he used to. Cullen has matured greatly over the years thanks to some internal insight; he is exceedingly more proper than he was when he was younger and tends to treat everyone with the same degree of respect, despite how he personally feels about them. Though he does not use sarcasm as a crutch, he is by no means afraid to use it. Humor often finds its way into Cullen’s behavior in an effort to create a hospitable environment for those around him. He is a convivial fellow when interacted with by those he considers to be among his friends. He retains some of that hearty nature when portraying a more casual, but nevertheless circumspect, demeanor when conversing with strangers. He is genuinely compassionate and considerate of others, no matter if he knows them or not. He becomes concerned if someone appears upset and will go out of his way to comfort them. He believes that everyone has a reason for doing what they are doing and, as such, tries not to judge someone for their actions before knowing their intent.

Despite appearing optimistic and customarily having a relaxed composure, Cullen can surprise others who deem him placid by becoming callous at the snap of his fingers. He is not easy to provoke, but when he is, Cullen loses every drop of joviality in his body for a more vile personification of himself who's not afraid to deliver insensitive remarks with the purpose of being damaging. He can become fiercely argumentative and will not rest until a point has been proven. He is indefinitely protective of those he considers close to him and will instantly become hostile should someone contemplate awarding those he considers his family and friends with a harsh comment. Though he can become disgusted with himself for doing so, Cullen holds deep grudges against those who have treaded on his bad side on multiple occasions or linger there. His innate loathing for such people rises to the point of making him want to start up arguments that are ages old or tell them to shut their mouths although they may not even be talking. Cullen tries his best to hide the pessimistic viewpoint that he has gathered over the years. A few hard experiences have caused him to examine the world in a way he would prefer not to disclose. Asking about Cullen’s past makes him uncomfortable and he will do all he can to deflect the question. He values other people’s privacy and expects them to see the importance of his privacy as well and refrain from prying into his personal life unless he invites them to do so.

History: Born in a middle-class family in Canada, Cullen lived a fairly normal life. He was raised in a neighborhood that was considered a "bad neighborhood” by the more prudish of people in a semi-large household with around six family members in total. As his household was rather loud and rambunctious, Cullen found little peace and quiet and highly valued the times he found such. He was taught at a young age to be considerate of others and always remember that the world didn’t center around him nor anyone around him. In school, Cullen was considered to be one the more popular kids as he was rather charismatic and outgoing at the time. He took track in both elementary and high school and impressed both his parents and teachers by doing fairly well in both track and academics courses. In high school, Cullen brushed past the backlash he obtained for being in ballet, which he was no longer in, and became one of the more popular kids once more. He was well-known and liked by those who knew him. He had a large group of friends, none of which he was especially close with, and dated some of the other more acclaimed students. However, when Cullen’s father left his mother for his mistress, Cullen began to recoil from his social life, becoming more reclusive from others. His grades slowly dropped and he struggled with both keeping them up and dealing with his family, especially since his mother, who had subsequently been purely passive-aggressive, began lashing out.

The stress accumulated from Cullen’s late years in high school dispersed as he headed to college, making his connections to his family strained. Thanks to some rather hefty peer pressure and some curiosity on his part, Cullen became enamored in partying. For about two years, he was considered to be one the campus’ biggest party-animals. It took a drop in his grades and a concerned call from his brother to set him back straight. Cullen’s first transformation came right after he ended a toxic relationship with a manipulative partner sometime after he and left college and began his career as a professional soccer player. He found it wildly difficult to control his form in the first few months, but slowly began to learn to control it in the following years. Though it was difficult, and he has not truly mastered it, Cullen learned to keep his shifting powers in check. After breaking up with his partner and turning his back against his partying lifestyle, Cullen decided to do his best to become a better person and a beneficial member of society, even if that meant keeping part of his life a secret.

Fun Tidbits?:

- As a moose, Cullen is exceptionally large, weighing in around 1500 pounds (680 kilograms)

- He makes lucky paper stars when stressed to calm his nerves.

- In addition to being a great runner, Cullen is also an exceptionally swimmer.

- He is an excellent cook.

Username: Lady_Lunevis

Birth Name: Fan, Lifen { 范莉芬 }

Nickname/Preferred Name?:Lifen.

Age: 25

Gender Identity: Female

Appearance: Lifen is short, at about 154 cm (5'1"). She has a petite figure and straight, black hair down to the middle of her chest. She has a 'princess cut', with bangs hiding her forehead in a perfect line across. She has a narrow face and a small mouth, with dark brown eyes and perfectly threaded eyebrows. She thinks her large ears to be her biggest fault, and thus keeps her hair long and untied to cover up such shameful appendages.

She has little physical strength and as such has a very weak immune system, meaning colds are common for her. Due to this, her skin has a rather sickly paleness and when she is sick, she develops a too-red hue to her cheeks and forehead that mounds of foundation serves to prevent from showing.

Considering herself a proper lady, Lifen adorns herself with jewelry--everything from earrings to bracelets, and spends at least an hour in the morning getting ready, hair and makeup included. She dresses very stylishly, one of the perks of having a large bank account and doting parents. Never without one of her fashionable designer bags at hand, Lifen loves shoes the most--she owns many pairs, most of them involving heels so she is often taller than she seems.

Personality: Raised to be prim, proper, and traditional, Lifen has a rather old-fashioned approach to things. Although she is willing to listen to reason, the idea of anything immediately scandalous would make her gasp. Childish and sheltered, Lifen doesn't know much of the world and how different the lives of people can be from her own. Trusting her parents above anything, she is at fault for looking down on people who she doesn't consider "good" enough to be a part of society--having been raised in a functioning, high-society household, Lifen is privileged and thus acts as so.

She is unable to accept criticism--her past has conditioned her to think of her and her ideals as one hundred percent correct, and will reject anything else.

Extroverted and friendly, Lifen makes friends easily and is quite social, though she finds friends difficult to keep for long. No matter--Lifen is so used to switching around that her mood changes drastically depending on how she feels--she can all smiles one second and then simply cold the other. Always interested in the next new thing, she makes it a goal to befriend almost every person she talks to--though the matter of them keeping their friendship is one for another day.

If she considers someone a friend, she'll absolutely spoil them. She'll want to go shopping with the person, do anything together, and constantly talk. She's childish in the sense that she must get everything she wants, and can easily discard something. Sensitive, her feelings can be easily hurt and she doesn't hesitate to let others know she's displeased, and finds it rather hard to apologise. However, she is generally polite to others.

Due to her condition, she is also wary around everyday household items and never does anything physical if not required.

Lifen handles stress in an interesting way--she'll spend. Spend, spend, spend. Buying herself new things and sorting them out is a well-needed distraction, though she'll never face the source of stress head-on. Rather, she'd wait it out and get herself something nice in the meantime. Unless the stress is something that has to do with her condition, she won't let it bother her too much.

Entirely new situations are often the source of Lifen's stress that includes her condition--depending on how prepared she is for whatever may be coming, she will either panic and flee or attempt to place herself somewhere that feels somewhat familiar, being wary around new surroundings or people.

History: Born with CIP, also known as congenital insensitivity to pain, Lifen's parents had a heck of a time trying to raise her. Unintentionally, the infant Lifen would often bite at her mouth or fall and hurt herself, and with no sensors to feel pain they had to keep constant watch on her. Her father being the CEO of a large business right in the heart of China, they had the money to provide a good life for Lifen, full of doctors that would try new things and maids that would wait on the growing child and ensure that no accidents happened. Her parents were very strict about making sure she grew up safe, so due to this Lifen had a lonely childhood that included only their house and the doctor's office. Homeschooled with the best tutors, Lifen was unable to form close bonds with others growing up. Being constantly surrounded by adults and no one her own age, Lifen came to rely heavily on her parents and their friends, becoming a little lady from an early age. Due to this, she finds children annoying. Never having played a sport in her life nor cooked for the fear of an accident, Lifen's parents wire money into her bank account every month and has workers check up on her, warning her that going outside is generally not a good idea. They filed her head with the horrors of what might happen should she be left on her own, and because of this Lifen needs a sense of security anywhere she goes and someone to depend on.

When she was a child, she found friends and her own world in books. She reads a lot, and although she has a tendency to reread books over and over again all of her books are perfectly pristine. Should she accidentally maim one, she'll immediately go out and buy a fresh copy to keep her bookshelf neat and new.

Though usually obedient to her parents' wishes, Lifen had been watching T.V. one day when she came upon a most wondrous thing--a night festival! The girl was enthralled by all that she saw on the screen as the camera zipped by--markets set up in rows of stalls gathered around a large plaza, with people buzzing in and around everywhere the camera looked. Dancers lit up the night sky with beautiful colours, fireworks ending off the supposedly perfect night as they blossomed onto a dim night sky. For Lifen, who had lived her life so far doing absolutely nothing, the girl was filled with an urge to attend a festival. She gathered up a scrapbook, filling it with internet articles and photos of festivals--though, no matter how many she looked, the night festival was still her favourite one of them all. She wanted . . . no, she needed to go see the fireworks!

She brought up the festivals with her parents, who only shook their heads and furrowed their brows with worry at the idea of their little daughter going somewhere where a lot of potentially dangerous accidents could happen. They refused, but Lifen remained stubborn. She persisted, asking again and again until her parents finally got fed up. During one of their shouting matches, when Lifen demanded how could it be that CIP decided the rest of her life, she felt things beginning to change. Her vision blurry with tears, she felt herself grow smaller and smaller, and she felt as if she might faint . . .

The shocked gasps of her mother and the sudden shock of her father made her realise something was wrong, very wrong--she was . . .

They called the transformation a mutation. Something gone horribly wrong. Her parents were so ashamed, so afraid of adding another medical condition to their daughter's list that they neglected to mention it to the doctors, insisting that Lifen keep silent about such a thing. Beaten, the girl admitted defeat and spent half a year in loneliness, wondering what exactly happened that afternoon. When her parents were called back to China on business, she decided to explore the limits of her strange powers a little more. Slowly, she began to wander out the window on the wings of a bird--at first, she hardly dared to go a few steps before retreating, but time passed on and she gained more confidence. Since transforming, Lifen had found the strange allure of the mansion too much to resist, and eventually she gained the confidence to explore the unknown place, still keeping her wish of wanting to go to a festival alive.

Fun Tidbits?: If she unintentionally puts her hand down on a stove or something she really needs someone to alert her thank you all.

Animal: Chinese Grey Shrike

Birthmark Shape: Resembles a simple yin-yang symbol.

Other: As a shrike, it can be rather awkward when she sticks her prey in random trees, only to forget where she left them later on.

She is fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English, albeit her English could use a little work. She's much more used to reading and writing than listening and speaking, and may need sentences to be repeated or toned down.

Username: Lady_Lunevis

Birth Name: Beauchene-Perrot, Zacharie  (O.)

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Zac

Age: 27

Gender Identity: Demiboy - he/him, they/them

Appearance: Zac is tall, at around 175 cm (5'9"), with a lanky figure and dyed dark blue hair. He has sharp features and a beauty mole near his left eye. Much like his animal counterpart, Zac has large, beautiful eyes. His hair has a certain fur-like texture to it, with natural fluff and a certain bounciness. There are scars on his ears, much more apparent in his animal form, from old piercings that ripped out quite painfully when he transformed. Zac is somewhat physically fit, being able to run quickly and for long distances, though his upper body strength could be improved.

Zac dresses as if he's just woken up and thrown on the first few things he sees--which is probably true. He has little regard for his fashion choice, deciding that whatever fits will do. Often, he'll wear the same outfit for days in a row before realising. Fond of baggy pants and a loose tank, Zac also wears reading glasses from time to time.

Personality: Zac is laid back and careless, armed with sarcasm and casual insults. He's capable of falling asleep anywhere and at any given time, though that might be due to the fact he works mainly on a diet of coffee and sugar and hardly sleeps. He has no qualms about picking fights and will hardly ever follow orders, wanting to challenge anyone who may think they can place themselves higher than him. However, most of the time he simply can't bring himself to care--as long as they're not directly bothering him they could burn down the house for all he minds. His idea of a good time is simply doing nothing--Zac is lazy and likes it that way, unable to bring himself to do anything other than his hobby, which interestingly happens to be playing the violin.

He hardly ever bothers with discussion--he's not the type of person to get real deep about anything. Content to accept life simply as it is, he's long learnt not to wish for more, but rather work with what he has and destroy anything standing in the way. A trickster, he's fond of jokes and may not realise when he's gone too far with insults.

He dislikes learning more than anything--in school, he barely scrapped by. He also has quite the sailor's mouth, although he holds most of it in when meeting new people, as he doesn't want to immediately drive them away. That can come after a couple jokes and perhaps a possible one night fling.

Between the insults and mockery, Zac can be a sweetie at times. He has a fondness for animals and wants pets, though with this whole transformation business it's suffice to say he finds it awkward to think of an animal as cute and then witness them turn back into . . . well, a human. He also likes to live by sharing love--being polysexual, he enjoys having multiple partners and having new experiences. If interested, he'll be flirtatious and never one to give up.

On the outside, Zac seems to not care for stress. However, when stressed, he takes things to the extreme--he can for days without sleeping until he finally crashes in a random spot.

In new situations, Zac will quickly analyse everything. He'll judge anything he sees, including people and places, before actually getting to know the full story.

History: Adopted from a dysfunctional foster home in France at the age of thirteen, Zac's adoptive parents were strict and disciplined. Even from an early age, Zac had developed a rebellious streak that quickly turned into a devil-may-care attitude, and so the viewpoints of his parents and him often clashed. Unable to answer to authority, Zac began acting out and did regrettable things, though he himself would never admit to such a past. Finally at a loss, his parents sent him to a boarding school where he was given proper education with strict rules and consequences, and although they hoped the school would help Zac realise what he was doing with his life and shape up, regrettably this only made Zac even more bitter and angry at his parents, determined to ruin their hopes and dreams.

After becoming legal, Zac moved out with what little money he saved up working a part-time job during his time at school. He forfeited any dreams of higher-level education and instead went to a community college, earning a degree. He now works as a illustrator for a small time game company, and as long as he makes enough to scrape by he considers it a worthwhile life.

Zac transformed at an early age, when the conditions of his foster home became too horrible to bear. He never mentions what exactly happened, but all he remembers is closing his eyes, wildly terrified, and the next moment realising something was different. His viewpoint had changed, his senses were alert, and his foster parents were looking at him as if he'd popped out straight from a horror movie. After that event, Zac used his power to run away when needed, hiding himself away in some corner so that no one would find him.  Ever since beginning to transform, he'd felt a certain need to come to the mansion, and upon becoming an adult with nothing to lose he packed up his bags and continued on with life.

Fun Tidbits?:

Zacharie is polysexual : ^ )

He's also vegetarian and ready to party

Animal:Blanc de Hotot

Birthmark Shape:A long, narrow shape with a pointed end that looks suspiciously like a carrot. Zac insists it's an arrow. If you squint, it's an arrow.

Other:

Username: Althaia

Birth Name: Xu, Yanling (旭焰绫)

Nickname/Preferred Name?: Yan or Ling, sometimes Enrei (but only if she tells you so)

Age: 31

Gender Identity: Female

Appearance: Yan stands at exactly 5'11, with long arms and legs. She's underweight, but years of fencing have managed to give her some bulk. She wants to gain some weight, though, because at her current state she doesn't have as much strength and stamina as she'd like to.

Yan has pitch black hair, with shorter, blonde and orange locks at the sides of her head. They stick out like wings, which annoys her a lot. Her eyes are dark brown and turn slightly upwards at the corners. She has a few scars on her knees and shins, when her opponents managed to poke through her socks when they were fencing. She prefers to wear graphic t-shirts and jeans, paired with sneakers.

Personality: Although she acts like she couldn't give less of a damn about others' opinions of her, Yan is extremely sensitive to critique. One of her biggest pet peeves is that she starts tearing up when she gets even slightly agitated, which makes many people consider her weak. Around her friends, she's loud and reckless, but when she's alone, she's quiet as a mouse. She doesn't react very well to pressure, and either caves in or lashes out, depending on her current mood and situation. She tries her best to fit her personality with anyone she interacts with, so she has a lot of acquaintances, but not many close friends.

History: Having been raised in China for half her life and America for the other, Yan is perfectly adjusted to both cultures and can easily transition between the two when she is meeting with her friends or family. When she was a small girl, she'd always loved going to the Natural History Museum with her mother. As the years went by, she started becoming more withdrawn, much preferring peace and quiet after a long bout of socializing. She loved her friends, of course, but they tired her out. After starting middle school, Yan began daydreaming more and more, developing several fantastical ideas that she would later try to turn into novels. In the last years of middle school, she decided fencing would be cool and joined a club. She graduated from a liberal arts college with an English degree, and is currently working as a newspaper editor. It's good pay, but she wishes she could get something more out of her education.

She first discovered she could shapeshift when she was at a tournament, trying to qualify for the Olympics. Her opponent was ahead of her by 4 points, and there was barely a minute left on the clock. As she ran off for a much-needed bathroom break, the stress hit her like a freight train, and suddenly she shrank out of her fencing uniform and couldn't see past the bathroom sinks. She managed to change back, and, after hastily finishing the tournament and losing the opportunity to go the Olympics, she stumbled upon the mansion just outside the city.

Fun Tidbits?:

- Yan is pansexual and polyamorous. She has two boyfriends.

- She's trying to make it as a writer, but so far she's stuck as an editor.

Animal: White-fronted capuchin

Birthmark Shape: A crescent shape that resembles a moon.

Other: She's fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English.

(Continuous work in progress. Any questions asked and answered will be brought here.)

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What about bugs?

-- Bugs are an iffy matter. For right now, with where I want this thread to go, I will only allow large breeds of spiders.

2. Do different breeds of a species count as different animals? Like if someone reserved a garden snake, I couldn't play an anaconda because they are both snakes?

-- Yes. Different breeds count as different animals. However, wolves will be limited to one as they can interbreed and the number of varying breeds is very minimal. Dogs are not the same. They interbreed but there are hundreds of different breeds that I am willing to allow different types of dogs. Same applies to felines.

3. Do the characters know about their shifting before they reach the mansion?

-- Yes. They learn about their ability before the mansion begins to draw them to it. Otherwise, they wouldn't come to know that the place existed.

A question: what about extinct animals? Are we allowed to pick one of those as our alternate form? And if we are allowed, is there a limit as to how far back we can go?

Nicely done and more or less complete. Though I can nitpick some grammar to polish it up.

~~~
You are a shape-shifter, a chimera, an animal walker; whatever term that's used to describe a human capable of taking the form of an animal.
Semicolon unnecessary. The second part isn't a complete clause. I would suggest replacing it by just a comma.
This bobble varies by shape and color, not size (which is about the size of a golf ball).
You might benefit from using but instead of a comma in this case because you're making a statement rather than correcting a contradiction (e.g. the ball is red, not yellow). You could probably do without the "which is" to make the portion in parenthesis more concise.
No one knows what such adornments mean just yet but, there is the realization that some of these match the birthmark on your chest where your heart is.
Comma splice. Personally I would reword the last half to "the birthmark over your heart" for a simpler sentence, but stylistically it's fine as-is.
It's up to you, and the rest like you, to figure stuff out and connect dots.
Connect the dots?
Anything I say goes. You are free to explain things you had in mind but, if I say "no", that is that. This means, you will need to PM me first if you have any big ideas.
Two unnecessary commas.
Hiphopopotamus
I am obligated to point out the deliberate typo. (Additionally, you might want to clarify that a Blanc de Hotot is a breed of rabbit.)
You live in a big, bustling, city.
No comma.
However, something, some kind of pull has started to attract you.
This sentence might benefit from dashes (...something -- some kind of pull -- has started…) to help with the flow. It's another style nitpick.
Just a seemingly random group of strangers who are like you, fellow shape shifters.
An awkward comma. It could be remedied by changing the sentence completely (…group of strangers who are fellow shapeshifters like you) or by changing the comma to a colon or a full stop.
But, at the end of the day,
Unnecessary comma.
Additionally, whatever injuries you have in one form, carries through to the other as long as the part exists.
No comma.
However, healing is faintly accelerated by about three times the normal and continue to occur, even if the injury is nonexistent as a human.
"Continue" should be conjugated to "healing". No comma.
So, piercings, tooth fillings, clothes, and everything similar, will be affected.
Commas unneccessary. You could probably also remove the "so" at the beginning. Also, you explained what happens when one gets too big, but what about too small?
Thing is, they aren't really causing any trouble so, they're not a big concern.
No comma.
Continuos work in progress.
Typo.
This is your home for an indefinite amount of time so, you may as well get cozy and know the place.
No comma. It also seems that the 'Mansion Layout' section should be above the characters section so that it can be together with the rest of hte IC information, but it depends if you're going to expand the mansion part into a catch-all location post. (The building is pretty well described, by the way.)
holding a vase of flowers or basic statute.
An "a" seems to be missing after "basic". And a typo.
couches, cushioned chairs, a recliner or two, wide screen TV, and a wireless telephone handset.
An "a" also seems to be missing before "wide screen TV".
a long, oak, coffee table
No comma between the last adjective.
A dinning table rests to the right where the open doorway would reveal the living space.
Typo. The "would reveal" conjugation makes the sentence a bit awkward and this entire paragraph is overall a bit hard to understand without re-reading.
Countertops and cooking appliances spread across the left wall, cabinets filled with dishes and drawers littered with cookware or dinning ware.
Sentence fragment. I think you meant to put "countertops and cooking appliances are spread", but I also realize that spread can also be used as a verb. The second part is definitely a fragment, though. Same "dining" typo as well.
Exiting to the hallway, your path will take you passed the laundry room, equipped with three sets of washers and dryers.
"Will take you past" is suddenly in future tense even though the sentence would still work in present tense (which the rest of the description is in).
A single, simple, wood railing
No comma after the second adjective.
closes off the open side to prevent people from falling, the railing continuing up and to the side to barricade the second-floor "overlook".
The comma placement combined with the repetition of "the railing" appears to be unnecessary. You might be better off splitting them into two sentences or eliminating the repetition. In addition, I think the "overlook" you're describing could be described as a balcony of some sorts.
~~~

In conclusion, good work! smile.gif Just a few comma splices but you're otherwise good to go in my opinion.

Ah, thanks for catching all of these. ^^ The "connect dots" phrase is actually diction and I don't believe I'll change it to "connect the dots" as not all of them might be connected. ;3

I fixed the rest of the edits and added in a snippet of information to describe what happens when you become too small for human items.

The mansion layout and date/time information will be going into the IC; they won't stay here in the OOC. The mansion is a catch-all/default/constant location for this RP but it certainly isn't going to be the only location. However, I felt it important to describe as it is a starting place and will be visited frequently.

I might make a list of locations for the area with brief descriptions but the full mansion layout will be something of its own.

^^ Nope, it's all good. This is the OOC thread. smile.gif

And, that's totally fine about your Internet matter. :3

I'll post the IC once I'm ready to start the thread.

The IC has been made.

Anyone is allowed to make the first post. I won't necessarily make the first post since I plan mine to be more of a reaction than the start of any interactions. If you want to assume that I made an intro already, consider the mansion layout to be my intro.

The OOC is where most of the information will be held. Please come here first for any info/questions/etc you might have or need. I will also maintain an IC Timeline in this thread with brief updates on things have have occurred or presently are.

There is Time/Date/Weather information in the IC thread. Pay attention to that as I will keep it updated as best as possible. I don't want people to be confused about dates/times as this will eventually become important.
