Illogical fears/things that make you anxious

Recommended Posts

I'm currently sitting in a small out of the way coffee shop, and let me tell you, it's a busy night. Anyways, this topic came up because there are a lot of girls that have come in and out of the cafe, and I find myself ducking behind my laptop screen whenever they walk in. I am an inexplicable nervous wreck around most women. xd.png No clue why. I get very tongue tied and flushed, and my heart rate goes up to an alarming speed. Anxious is pretty much an understatement. But, thinking about that made me curious; what are some of the sillier things that make you guys feel the same way? Share here!

That I will become blind, thus thrusting me wholly into my lifelong fear of living in complete and utter darkness without any escape or salvation.

Buying gifts for non-family, I get really nervous when I have to buy things for other people. What if I buy something they don't like and they just fake happiness not to upset me? I think of all the worse case scenarios, them throwing it out, regifting to someone else, etc. I know they probably wouldn't do that but it runs in my head so I tend to buy things they can't return.

Public speaking was another thing that made me super anxious. My palms get sweaty, my heart starts racing and I feel like I'm going to be sick. I don't like it when people are staring at me. I know that it's not a big deal, everyone has to do it at some point, but it still freaks me out.

Needles, whenever I have to get a needle I freak out pretty bad. I have to lie down facing away from the needle, if I see it go anywhere near my skin I start shaking. It gets so bad that when I'm at the dentist, he tells me to close my eyes for the whole procedure. He even gets his helper to hold my hand so I have something to hold onto. Even talking about this is making my skin crawl.

Oh, I guess it's irrational in a sense that it probably wouldn't happen. At least not till I'm on my last throes? I'm diabetic and not really making an effort, and while that wouldn't phase a normal guy, my maternal grandfather had the whole shebang with the dialysis and the blindness and the gangrene, so that fear's hovering somewhere in the background. Not enough to make me take better care of myself, apparently.

But stabbing yourself in the belly and nicking your fingers multiple times a day would help someone get over their fear of needles perhaps? xd.png I didn't have a particular problem with it, though.

@Storm_Dragoon Would it be considered impolite where you are to gift chocolates? That was my dad's advice; if you don't know them well, or what to give em, a gift box of Ferrero Rochers (or vochelle if you're cheap) xd.png Unless they're diabetic. Or lactose intolerant. They would still be able to share them with others and be seen as generous smile.gif

...

Especially the house ones, while I was able to hold a huge fowler hat wouldn't fit my palm but both... blink.gif

I think it activates mostly when they move, the faster the worse, the fowlers I held were not moving or if, their movements were slow. And it's not a 'bite' I fear, it's basically them moving, approaching me when I don't want or potentially getting under my clothes or anywhere else than my palm/s, brrr.

And bugs unless I'm able to get used to them on my own, when I want - not when they force their presence on me, and they need to be in some enclosure they won't escape but where I can put my hand in - I got used to insescts I feed to my lizard this way while I still fear all the others. But I'd still get scared if they got under my clothes

I have several, but I'll give you one serious one and two kinda amusing ones.

One thing I really hate is whispers. I was bullied when I was younger so any sort of whispering - even if the rational part of myself knows it isn't about me - will make me super anxious. Social anxiety, people. It's really not fun tongue.gif

My second one is bees. Not wasps, but, like, bumblebees. When I was about 4 I was chased by a rather large bumblebee and the door was locked from the outside so I couldn't get back in the house, so I was helplessly running around in circles screaming as this huge bumblebee bobbed behind me since it thought I was some sort of flower. That's happened to me more than once, actually, and the second time was both hilarious and humiliating as I was near tears in front of my neighbors as I ran from a bumblebee xd.png

My last (and probably funniest) illogical fear are butterflies: there's a story behind this one. When I was six, I was taken to the butterfly garden. My dad told me that since I was wearing a shirt with a butterfly on it, they would land on me. Boom, scarred for life. Now I duck and run for cover any time I see a butterfly and/or moth... I don't go out much during the summertime.

Oh yes I do also have an irrational fear of butterflies and moths. I used to call it a phobia but since it isn't pertinent when I'm around other people, that makes it irrational.

When I was very young and in my mom's hometown and bored as heck, I would ask my dad to take us somewhere interesting (the town didnt have as many attractions as the capital). One of them was the butterfly park. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I kept asking to go back not because I enjoyed the butterflies but because I liked feeding the fish in the pond >_> At a butterfly park.

The fear gauge depends entirely on the size of the winged creature. The larger the more irrational. A thumbnail would make me freeze for a split second(typically moths because butterflies dont do the whole stick-in-one-place-for-a-while thing). Something less than a hand's-width would make me leave the room immediately. If there isn't someone around to deal with it immediately, I bite my tongue and kill it myself. I can deal with little dainty ones that fly about grass and weeds.

It's irrational to me because the larger they are the easier they would be to hit or crush. They dont bite or sting. I don't exactly know why my stomach lurches when I see one today.

I don't know about anxious, but I get really uncomfortable when people are on my left side.

Although this varies with how well I know the person as well as if I have someone on my right side.

It's pretty illogical so I felt like it fits here tongue.gif

Hmm, seeing as I found a few at this place I was at today... and I'm not going to call this a phobia. It's just something that makes me uneasy.

Dead spiders.

If I suddenly see them unexpectedly, I get creeped out. Pretty sure this stems waaaay back when I was very very young. I think it's the way their legs fold. And if they're really old, they become brittle and it's just... not fun to pick one up and suddenly it doesn't have half its body.

I consider it irrational because the thing's dead, it's less dangerous than a live spider - an animal I see every day, handle frequently and genuinely adore. And I almost specialise in working with dead things, and that has included spiders before so :u

Cockroaches are in the same boat. And millipedes. Earwigs. I get briefly creeped out by many deceased invertebrates (doubly so if crushed, but then I get upset if I find out it was done on purpose) and I'm not entirely sure why |D

Also vats. I pretty much despise vats. Probably because horror stories of people getting trapped in them and meeting all sorts of horrific ends.

In addition to the darkness-and-being-alone-in-dim-lighting thing; mirrors. Probably a slight spectrophobia? I dislike looking at my reflection (not because of -my- reflection, but simply because I am looking into a mirror). Merely passing by a mirror in the dark or dim lighting if I am aware of its location fills me with certain dread. Meaning if I am in an unfamiliar place and don't previously know a mirror is there, I wouldn't be apprehensive, but certainly shocked if I discover it.

I am an agnostic theist, not superstitious. I don't believe there are supernatural things but don't deny them either. Being forced to stare at my own reflection in dim light is just short of being forced to be alone in the dark in an unfamiliar place for an extended period of time.

That isn't to say that I refrain from using mirrors. I just do so as fast as I can. By extension, even if I am not looking at my own reflection, if I can see the mirror in general (looking at it at an angle), it unsettles me. The idea that the corner of the room it is reflecting will have an anomaly that is not reflected in its real-life counterpart is horrifying.

Speaking of which, there is a half-body mirror in the center of my room on the wall of my cupboard (my room is L-shaped) that has been there for over 15 years. I just avoid eye contact with it except for when I need to.

"Why don't you just move it?"

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Aggressive tone of voice just makes me so upset, even when it's not like anything to with me just hearing makes me feel so anxious.

I have misophonia, and sometimes even the thought of eating around people makes me anxious. Besides that, I get nervous when people are standing too close to me.

I've always been worried that the toothy bits at the bottoms and tops of escalators will suck me in.

I have a fear of the elf on the shelf. My parents got one this year, and I am resisting the urge to burn it because it is creepy.

Oh gosh, I remember another one.

I'm absolutely terrified of wasps, bees or any creature that stings/bites. When I was younger I fell into a stouts 'nest'(or deer flies if you want the proper name, we call them stouts here). I got bitten several times and their bites HURT. I got bitten over 10 times so I'm absolutely terrified of them. If I hear anything that buzzes I freak out and if I'm outside I'll bolt for the nearest cover. I rarely turn on my air conditioner in my car because that attracts them.

@Redds I probably could get them chocolate but if they are anything like me, they have some sort of allergies. I'll just grin and bear it while trying not to think about it xd.png.

Wow, these are some pretty good ones! I've enjoyed reading a lot of these!

I've noticed a lot of you guys have bug related fears, especially to bees or spiders. My fiance is quite the same, if it's any consolation at all.

I'm scared of doggos. I don't know why (especially the tiny ones). I'm also always scared of making a stupid typo that everyone will laught at, so each time I am writting something, I check 5-6 times to be sure I don't have typos, even if there are not alot.png of words... OH NO!

Dark. I'm a twenty year old and still sleep with a nightlight. I stay with my parents for medical reasons and because I don't want to leave. I have a dragon parasol (I collect Dragon figurines) with purple and orange Halloween lights behind it, so it's cool and dim but bright enough for me to see at night.

Then the smell of the isle that has bleach in it. I hate the smell, it drives me insane. And the candle isle.

This is extraordinarily silly but sometimes when it's dark enough to make my face covered in shadows yet still light enough to see, I get scared of my own reflection. It's not so much scared in an ah-this-is-terrifying-i'm-gonna-die way but more like "wait... what if that's not me in the mirror" paranoia way. A prime example: One time, I walked past my mirror in the dark while half asleep and I caught sight of my reflection's movement. Thinking it was someone else, I nearly had a heart attack before realizing it was simply my own reflection. I probably read too many stories...

It's called disassociative identity syndrome, it tends to happen to everyone and isn't a mental issue.

GMM spoke and experimented with this at length;

Which is also one of the reasons why I don't like mirrors and dim light and especially not mirrors in dim light :3

Oh boy, this seems like my kinda thread...

I'm not inherently scared of water, but I have a huge fear of being submerged. I can shower just fine, but I can't have baths anymore because my heart will start pounding wildly if my body is submerged. It's strange because I've only developed this fear upon growing older and as a child I was fine? I'm calling this irrational because I have had no experience in drowning or bad things happening in water to trigger this fear, just one day I was just at the beach with my friend and couldn't go past my knees in the sea because I was starting to panic.

I'm also terrified of otorrhea. Just the fear that my ear will bleed or discharge wax - when I was younger my friend got otorrhea and it's scarred me ever since. Not really sure why, seeing as it's not a chronic illness or anything, I'd just be beyond embarrassed and freaked out if it happened in public.

if you ever find out what this is could you let me know and I'll do the same for you, I've had this exact same problem since mid teens

I just avoid places with water deeper than my knees now

I've dove into deep water twice since it started, once to save my idiot brother and the other time to help my eldest dog, both times I had to act faster then I could think

I'm not afraid of water, I love the ocean and rain, especially bad thunder storms I find them calming

but submerge me and I go into a panic attack

One word, vacuums.

It's not the vacuum itself but the noise they make? The pitch just !!! It's terrible.

That being said I'm also a neat freak so I have this very tiny quiet one.

I can totally understand this, I used to be freaked out by the hoover as a kid! Weirdly though, now that I'm older I actually find the noise helps me focus/get to sleep
