Guild Wars 2

Recommended Posts

I can't believe this isn't here on the video game board yet, I know at least one of you is either playing the beta or highly anticipating this game..

Guild Wars 2 has been in the works since just a few years after Guild Wars 1 launched. They ended up scrapping their first rendition of 2, only to come out with the one that is in beta currently. The game plans to launch sometime this year, late summer or early fall is what it's looking toward.

GW2 is going to be my preferential MMO of choice, for many fantastic reasons. These are my top 5.

1. Character Stories and Customization

GW2 has extensive character customization and every character will have its own personal story, based on how you write your character to be. There's even cutscenes that are effected by your story. During creation, you choose several options that reflect each choice you made before. In other words, no character will really play the same, unless you choose the exact same options... (obviously). As for the character customization, you can choose nearly every feature on their model. Buffness (or scrawnyness!), height, facial features, more. Guild Wars has always had very extensive creation options.

Character creation video:

Note: Humans are not the only playable race, I merely picked a good video.

2. Dynamic Events

GW2 sort of breaks off of the whole boring questline dilemma that seems to plague a lot of current MMOs. When you quest in those, it gets boring and grindy really fast- not a lot holds you to the game and keeps you hooked. With GW2, there will of course be some quests, but a lot of "Dynamic Events" will pop up- random events based off of the landscape (some of them WILL be constant events though, around the starter area, reasonably) that effect the world in a permanent way. Say centaurs start attacking a village in Queensdale, an event will pop up (if you are nearby) to slay the centaurs and defend the village. If you fail, the village will be taken over, and an event to drive the centaurs out will pop up. If you succeed, and event to go destroy the centaur's encampment may pop up. Essentially, there are two paths each event can go- and each player can contribute safely without worrying about getting a proper reward. There will be something for everyone to earn. These sort of events keep the player hooked and having fun.

3. Races, Lore, and More

The lore of the Guild Wars games has always had me intrigued, it was very original, yet you could always find a reference or two in it. The way the five races developed from GW1 to GW2 was pretty neat too. In the first game, you could only play as a human. Yet toward the last expansion of GW1, you met the Asura, Norn, and the Charr were becoming more apparent as a race, rather than a primitive, warloving tribe. This set the stage for the playable races in GW2, and I found it really neat. The only race you do not meet in the first game are the Sylvari, but you do see some neat lore that hints at where they came from. There is a small tree out in a forest (I can't remember the names for the life of me, it has been a long time since I've read this) in the first game that is the tree that the Sylvari grow from. They take their lore very seriously. The game itself is very unique... it's not just a game, it's a playable, interactive work of art. I have yet to hear a single negative thing about the lore and story of Guild Wars as a whole. I own both of the novels about GW2 myself. (Oh, I am such a lore nerd) The soundtrack from the game is also very beautiful and well-composed.. Jeremy Soule (often called the John Williams of the video game world) composed the music for the first game, and the second. The music just adds such character to the landscape that it isn't even funny.

4. Combat

I have not played the beta myself, but after watching countless videos, livestreams, and my brother... Man, I can say without a doubt the combat looks very fun and engaging. You can dodge as any profession (class), and the game promotes smart play, not "standing in the fire" so to speak. It molds a better gamer, and promotes coordination. If you run out of health, you go into a "downed" state, where you fall over and can fight for your life. You then have four skills which you can use (depends on your profession to what skills you have) to try and fight off your enemy and stay alive. If a player near you is downed, you can help them up and bring them back into the fight. All dynamic events scale up depending upon the number of players participating, which is really cool. This may sound odd compared to other MMOs, but you will only have 8 skills. The first five are dependent on your weapon(s) you are using, one is your self-healing skill, and the last three are utility. Over all, the combat is fun and engaging, no sitting and mashing every single skill you have learned.

5. The Holy Trinity (Tank, Healer, DPS), Shattered

This may be the biggest controversy about GW2, but based on the beta and what I've seen, they have done this very well... As stated above in combat, you have a self heal, meaning there are no real "healer" professions... Some professions may have a support utility spell that heals allies nearby, but no one is a true healer. Everyone is essentially DPS or support, or even both. Some professions may be better at taking a hit than others, but there are no true tanks either. No threat meter, no boring, predictable numbers, etc... It's all very unique and fun to just watch. Even though it is in beta, this is one concept and idea they got just right. Players are expected to not stand in dangerous areas and move around, they are also expected to manage their health and mana/energy efficiently, or they will go down. Still promotes better players, makes it fun and challenging, and boy do I like it..

All around, I think many of you would enjoy this game if you are a gamer. Even if you aren't, this may be a fun game to start on or even show your friends! Arenanet (makers of Guild Wars) have never disappointed me ever in any of their games. Guild Wars has to be my favorite that is out currently. I may sound like a total fangirl, but I seriously have not found a single aspect of this game that I do not like..

What do you guys think about this game? Are you anticipating? Do you like it? Do you not like it? Discuss!

;D I can't wait for GW2 to come out! I've played the first GW and now I'm really psyched for the second one! I already planned on making a Charr Necromancer because I liked the design of them in the first game and I love the Necromancer class.

What makes me looking forward to this game is that it's so different from the first. You can actually jump and swim and the quest system is so totally different from what any game I played is like. Mostly for the jumping/swimming part though. If you played the first GW you know those cliffs/rivers/houses that you had to walk around. Traveling is going to be twenty times more fun now ;D

The best thing about the GW series is that all you have to buy is the game itself, and with a nice internet access, it's fun for years. x3 Sure you can buy some extra character slots and maybe some cool-looking costumes, but there's a decent number of character slots given to you and you need to have to pay for a subscription to get into any "special" places or buy "special" items. Sure it costs like $60-70 to buy the game when it first comes out, but after that the joy of playing it is endless.

I'm ranting here ^^; I need to stop...

I'm not who you asked, but I can reply! I just saw this thread and went to poke it. I pre-purchased, and I am quite enjoying my purchase, even if the beta weekends and few and far between. I was really surprised when my character talked outside of combat, and even more so when I saw female char wear more than a bikini into battle. Overall, I'm really excited to see when it will launch.

Yeah. The fact charr females do not have boobs glued onto them makes me very, very happy. Too many games try to glue boobs onto everything and call it female.

Oh, and the "lets wear a metal bikini into battle, what could possibly go wrong?" thing was always annoying in games. I always laughed at the comics that had female characters getting mad about how the armor fit them. Could sooo relate, hated my character looking skimpy xd.png

Here's to hoping I get my new graphics card, motherboard, and RAM soon so I can play this game on good settings. :3

I really liked the beta weekend. It was very fun, and I got up to level 21. Even though I was a norn ranger, I spent a lot of my time in Diessa Plateau and different areas in Kryta, especially Shaemoor and Claypool.

Near the end of the beta, I made a charr thief to see how the charr played. That was fun too, but I only got to level 6 before switching back to my norn for the beta finale.

Sadly, I didn't get to see the beta finale. I was on the server "Gate of Madness" (not the overflow) and we never got the event before the beta ended.

Edit: I wanted to add how much I LOVE dynamic events. In RPGs and other MMORPGs, I had seeing stupid little sidequests pop up that I have no care to do, and I feel like I'm forced to do it anyway. With dynamic events, I'm able to choose if I want to do something to help. It's not being forced on me.

The heart system is also great. Each heart gives you a few options on how you would like to complete the heart, not just having to do one thing. If you want to go search for 'x' item to repair rather than fighting, go for it. If you want to slay creatures to aid the heart-giver, that can complete the heart too. So many options for completing tasks! It really defines Guild Wars 2's anti-grinding policy.

I tend to play the Charr more often. But I managed to get my elementalist up to level ten, but I was pretty busy this weekend. Also, there are beta events!? I just play it to level up and stuff.

At the end of the beta, there was some sort of finale ArenaNet threw in the Plains of Ashford. I'm not sure what went on, exactly, since it didn't happen in my server.

I'm really looking forward to this game. So happy we finally have a release date.

If anyone wants to see a high graphics screenshot, I have one from beta 2. It's not the most artistic shot ever (I captured pretty much everything on video, so I didn't take many screenshots), but here's one of a Norn Warrior in the starting area with Ultra graphics settings. (and I actually think they've improved the graphics slightly since beta 2).

So I just got back from holiday in Australia a few days ago.

I was a bit sad about missing the stress test, which I figured out I would be away for the day before I left, but I'm really happy to come back to having a date for BWE3 and release. I'm going to get a Sager NP9170 notebook with a few custom upgrades for my birthday, so it's going to be a pretty powerful gaming laptop. My birthday's in October, so I'm going to try to get the laptop beforehand so that I'll be able to play the game when it releases on high settings.

I'm practicing using a mouse instead of my trackpad so that when the game comes out I won't have too much of a disability there, since I'm used to my trackpad. When BWE3 comes, I'm going to look into xpadder and getting a Xbox 360 controller programmed for my PC since I'm more used to controllers than I am a mouse and keyboard by far, as well as a controller being much more comfortable for me than a mouse due to a slight deformation in the joints in my fingers.

How big is the client? I tried to download it, but it never told me how much it had left.

I've got a slow internet connection here.

This thread really deserves more attention.

So BWE3 is on its last day right now. sad.gif It's sad because I really fell in love with my character. I managed to turn the graphics up for the screenshot and prepare for it better. I took a few, but picked out this one since it has my pet snow owl in it.

Probably a bit late on the response, but... I don't remember the exact amount I downloaded, but currently the folder takes up 15.7 gb on my computer.

You're all set, NazDrag! ;P

I'm picking Gate of Madness (NA) for my server because most of my friends are choosing it as well.

I have both books and I'm definitely planning on getting the adorable Charr plush. I only have the Digital Deluxe Edition.

I was considering getting one of those GW2-themed Antec doors since I'm getting a DF-85 tower, but I really don't like the white against the black of the tower.

This is probably the most brilliant thing they did... well, not most, but very smart. Either way. They did a lot of brilliant stuff with this game.
