The Mandela Effect

Recommended Posts

The Mandela effect is the pseudoscientific belief that some differences between one's memories and the real world are caused by accidental travel between alternate universes. It was named after Nelson Mandela, whom some people erroneously believed to have died in prison in the 1980s.

I don't believe in alternate universes (in particular, I don't disbelieve in them...), so I would just describe it as collective false memories.

Personally, I just had an odd experience... I could have sworn that Shadow of the Colossus came out in the time period of 2008-2010, for the PlayStation 3. The reason I thought this is because I have memories of reading a GameInformer article on Shadow of the Colossus when I was about 10 or 11. And I don't remember what they said, but I get the impression that they described it as a new, revolutionary game. It definitely wasn't just an old copy, because my family was only subscribed to GameInformer during that time period. I also paid attention to things like dates and would have noticed if the magazine had been from 2005.

Now I'm not sure that the article even exists...

So, has anyone else experienced things like this?

No. I've always seen it as the brain filling in the forgotten pieces with its imagination, thus confusing the person and making them think that something's "different".

That's actually what I think it to be, too. Our memory is so easy to manipulate, as our minds are all too happy to alter memory. Snd hunans aren't the best at remembering things.

I've had family members experience this, but never me myself.

the only one I've experienced is the The Berenstain Bears Mandela effect.

I still can't believe it's Berenstain not Berenstein...

I know how you feel, I could have sworn it was Berenstein, though I didn't read or watch the show as a kid. Maybe it's because the way people pronounce it?

Can everyone agree it's 'Oscar Meyer' not 'Oscar Mayer' ?

Nope

I used to think there was a celebrity named Kate Perry, but apparently it's Katy Perry.

I don't actually know her though, so I may have just misread or misremembered the name. But it's funny that this is also mentioned on the Mandela effect website.

(I had never heard of Berenstain bears before I heard about this whole thing, so I don't have an opinion on that.)

I feel like from the capitals thing, I'm more inclined to believe that this is a case of "misremembering" rather than an effect. Tho this is coming from someone who grew up remembering the lyrics to Wakko's America from Animaniacs.

ETA: I love the top comments in the Know Your Meme page of this, lol.
