Which came first egg or chicken?

Recommended Posts

This is a traditional question many people have asked

Many people say

"Eggs came first because dinosaurs have been laying eggs way before chickens"

Well my question is:

Assuming chicken were the first animal able to lay eggs but chickens hatch from eggs which came first? (imaginary made up theories allowed)

Discuss!!!

It's the duck. *shot*

Being a Christian I believe that the chicken came first :3

egg.

think of genetic mutations. scientists are trying to "recreate" dinosaurs by altering the genes in chicken eggs. i saw on a TV show that they were being rather successful, but terminated the developing egg before it hatched to prevent religious complaints.

lets say that a genetic mutation accidentally occurs in the division of cells within a developing dinosaur egg. the embryo forms feathers instead of scales, because that gene/trait was accidentally "turned on". when that "missing link" mates, more of its genes and mutations are passed down. its offspring now have feathers, and that missing link multiplies.

then lets say a pair of those "missing links" breed. their offspring will have feathers, but another accidental mutation occurs. the tail is shrunken. then the species goes through the whole process for multiplying and what not, yadda yadda.

as these mutations breed, spread, multiply, mutate, and evolve, we will eventually have a very bird-like reptile. it lays an egg. the egg, unfortunately, has another mutation. a chicken hatches from an egg laid by a bird-like dinosaur.

therefore, via accidental mutations and millions of years of evolution, a chicken is born from an egg (that wasn't laid by a chicken). and, of course, they breed, multiply, spread, etc.

As for the thread... I HAVE NO IDEA! Seriously. My theory is they both came at the same time. No proof, but, it keeps me sane when I see this question.

but a circle has a beginning i can prove it by asking you to draw a circle on a piece of paper using only a pencil however the pencil isn't allowed to touch the paper. is it possible?

a circle may have no end if you will it yet it must have a beginning

Pretty much this.

Or pie, really.

If I tell a computer to make a circle for me or use the circle tool in gimp, the whole circle appears at once. There is no beginning or end. It starts as a dot and expands outwards.

Therefore a circle has no beginning or ending.

you are actually wrong.

the computer uses pixels to draw the circle, whether the computer generates the pixels in a pattern from inside to out or out to in there is an order where individual pixels appear only it happens so fast it seems instantaneous therefore it does have a beginning.

Egg.

Because:

1. I'm not christian and don't believe God made a bunch of animals and plopped them on the planet.

2. If it didn't come out of an egg, it's not a chicken.

Chickens and eggs also don't start out as someone drawing them with a pencil because they're asked to.

So then the beginning or end doesn't matter.

My point is that your question doesn't prove the circle doesn't have a beginning or end. If you ask me to draw a circle it's not a circle until it is fully drawn, at which point it is all connected and there is no beginning or end. When it was only 1/3 of a circle or 1/2 of a circle or 118/119 a circle it was not a circle. Only part of a circle. Therefore its beginning or end has nothing to do with the circle. o3o

typing long explanations is soooo tyring especially when your 11

i am talking about the beginning of the circle as in THE beginning, not where does a completed circle begin, but when does an actual circle begin.... i'm going to create a thread for this so get this off my thread about eggs and chickens!!!!

The egg had to come first. There is no other way. A chicken did not just magically appear and begin to lay eggs. Mutation by mutation, eventually a line can be drawn between a bird that was not a chicken, and the egg it laid, which was a chicken.

The fact that circles have no beginnings or ends has everything to do with this question. It's a circular question (har har) and therefore has no answer.

What do you mean by "the beginning"?

To answer the question, you have to ask "where did the chicken come from?"

If it came into existence already hatched, then the chicken would be first...

Or... if we go with science... the evolutionary ancestor of the chicken laid an egg with enough mutations to ensure that the thing that hatched from the egg is what we would genetically consider a "chicken". Thus, the egg, which would be a "chicken egg" would have to come first, otherwise, how would the chicken come into existence? It's not a chicken if it doesn't come from a chicken egg...

And your topic title is pretty much asking the same thing as your first post... so...

Well, yes. But that is impossible. Chicken were NOT the first animal to lay eggs. We cannot pretend they were or else we cannot answer the question. If you want to ask, which came first the egg or the first creature hatched from an egg, I still think the answer is an egg. You can't answer this without taking the fact chickens are not the first egg animal into account. I did read that sentence and I assumed it was to avoid people trying to be witty and saying, "Well eggs came first because dinosaurs came before chickens."

Well, birds came from dinosaurs, correct? So exactly what would you call a chicken? o.o

The chicken needs to come from an egg, and a chicken needs to lay an egg.

Also, the chicken will need to sit on the eggs so it will hatch.

So without the chicken, the eggs would die.

And there would be no eggs in the first place.

And how'd the chicken get here if there was no chicken to lay the eggs?

Let's just say this: Space Chickens tongue.gif

Whut? O.o

what exactly are you looking for? what do you want us to say?

you tell us to discuss in the OP, then you tell us that were not posting accordingly, then you say that you like the way a person thinks because they posted the circle theory with a nice sense of humor.

i feel like i am definitely missing something. what are we supposed to discuss?

I think they're looking for us all to assume that the chicken is the only thing that can ever lay eggs, but if that were the case, a chicken would HAVE to be created first, or the chicken would never exist because the egg wouldn't be laid by an evolutionary ancestor to allow the chicken to hatch...

So basically, it's asking "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" and setting conditions where the chicken can be the only correct answer... Which isn't much of a discussion if all other answers are negated...
