Unpopular Video Game Opinions

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find a thread like this, and it'd be interesting to see people's different opinions. So, I ask...

What's a game that you like when everyone else seems to hate it? Or alternatively, what game can you not stand that a lot of people seem to love?

My most unpopular opinion is that I am awful at the 3D Mario games. With the (albeit strange) exceptions of the Mario Galaxy series, which I love and am good at, I cannot grasp 3D Marios. Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Bros. Wii I am hopeless at, and my inability to play prohibits me enjoying them. It isn't even worth mentioning Mario 64.

[This thread is by no means a place to bash others for their favourite games. If you do not like a popular game, or you like an unpopular one, please be civil about it.]

I love Final Fantasy XIII and it was the first Final Fantasy that kept my attention all the way through, but it seems like everyone and their mom hates it... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i only started the first episode, but Life Is Strange was mind-numbing and felt like a teenager's bad self-insert fanfic

I dont get the obsession with Grand theft auto. Its a game where you earn points for commiting crimes and killing people. Why is this a thing?

Give me Kingdom Hearts over that any day.

I know I'll probably get a lot or hate for this but I absolutely despise episode based games. It's like just having you pay for the game isn't enough, they HAVE to make you pay for every little bit of the story to try and milk as much money out of the players as possible. Not to mention that it's a way to mask an unfinished release.

I also dislike subscription based games. It's an instant turn away for me.

If I'm going to pay money for something I want to get the full experience. Not part of it, not a temporary experience, and definitely not to find another pay wall inside the game. The absolute best game that I've ever played was fully free and continues to be fully free and the devs are making 8 digit profits off of it only from purely cosmetic stuff. If people like your game they will support you, no need to stab your players' wallets when they're wide open.

The mods and glitches are the best part about it

I have never been able to fully understand why Ocarina of Time is so beloved by many. I've tried again and again to like it and I just can't. I feel like I must be missing out on something really exceptional, the way people go on about it.

That's exactly the point of it. Definitely not for everyone, but yes, the point of the game is that you can have fun doing ridiculously violent things with no consequence. -- at least, my interpretation.

@Articray: I absolutely agree with you about episodic and subscription-based games. I don't mind episodic DLC, but if the entire game is divided into separately paid episodes, I will not be buying each individually. Maybe I'll try the first and get them in a bundle if I really like it. But I'd much, much rather pay once and get the whole package already built together.

I love WC:UT and sadly it's not popular.

I'm sure someone here loves it

I don't play it much anymore, but it's a good game.

GTA was actually created from an online game called Cops and Robbers but everyone wanted to be the Robbers so there was never enough cops to go around.

I don't know what game to you mean.

For what stands WC:UT? If you think or know it is not popular then please don't use abbreviations. wink.gif

I don't get it why someone says a game is censorkip.gif because there is no multiplayer.

Undertale

I might play it one day to see what it is like, but I don't really see the big appeal in it.

Breath of the Wild looks really bleak and lonely to me.

I've never played ANY Zelda game though and I don't really want to.

WC:UT stands for Warrior Cats: Untold Tales.

It was a good game then Falcon decides to abandon it for Cattails.

Call of Duty is the worse game I have ever played. The only redeemable thing about it is the zombie game mode but even then I always find some uber strategy to last forever that makes it seem as repetitive as the game and multiplayer section.

I will always be a battlefield fan and will probably die one too.

cattail's art is really ugly and when the first trailer came out i thought they were temporary assets and the fact that they're not has singlehandedly dissuaded me from purchasing the game

When I was younger I was obsessed with the Barbie Horse Adventures xbox game. And Pac-Man. I thought they were the best games ever, lmao, they were pretty much the only things I played. Everyone else hated them xd.png

Yes yes and yes. The controls of this game are questionable as hell and the graphics... Ehh...

In fairness, for one of the first 3D Nintendo games, OoT was legendary for the time, has its place, and set a lot of things in stone for later games. But it hasn't aged well, and I find many more Zeldas better functioning and funner. ALttP is perfect for me and my hatred of 3D wink.gif

One of the most unpopular opinions I've seen on this thread, but again, one I can relate to. I haven't played BotW yet but it seems like there's far too much empty space. Zelda has always functioned with villages around every corner, and I understand that the staple feature of BotW is that it's near Skyrim-level explorable, but Zelda typically works best with easily-accessible dungeons... no hate...

Sooooo....I hate games whose sole purpose is for online-multiplayer, like Overwatch. I think the only ones I've found I like are DBD and the Friday the 13th one (I could say L4D too, but that has a "single player" option, so I won't), and even those are stretching it. I like all the media and stuff around them, but the games themselves? Nah.

Also, the Walking Dead games. Boring as all get out, and I normally like games in that style :/

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is a great game. A lot of people hate it because it's not as scary as the original Amnesia, but I think it has an excellent story and that alone makes the experience worthwhile.

@CharonDusk - Same here. I can't stand multiplayer games. I don't like the pressure teamwork puts on me, plus I always appreciated story more than gameplay.

Oh dear me, yes! I admit I didn't like it as much as the original, but it was nowhere near as bad as people made it out to be! Especially the ending, that stuck with me.

Another opinion; Silent Hill: The Room and SH: Homecoming seem to be the most hated of the entire franchise, while Shattered Memories is universally loved. I loved The Room the most of all, whilst Shattered Memories just was not a Silent Hill game, especially disappointed after it was basically sold as a redo, better graphics and stuff like that, not an entirely different game.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game. It just isn't a Silent Hill game. :/ It feels like Konami took a different project and just slapped in a load of SH references to make it a Hill game, but that is exactly what earned The Room so much hate, because it WAS a different project turned into a Hill game :/

Also, Resident Evil. I LOATH RE5. Like, REALLY hate it. Yet so many seem to love it :|

It's not the same game, but when I was a kid I loved Barbie Adventure Riding Club, and it drove my brother insane xd.png.

Kingdom Hearts never appealed to me even though I'm a Final Fantasy fan (and speaking of Final Fantasy, I much prefer VIII over VII). Also, I've never understood why the Zelda games are so popular; sorry, Zelda fans!

I couldn't stand Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Probably because it felt like i was always being rushed to do things and I don't like that, I prefer to do things at my own pace and that 3 day timer really does not let the player do that.

Also, I think Kefka/FF6 are incredibly overrated, too, albeit being a good villain/game. Some people in the fanbase complain about Sephiroth/FF7 being overrated and then praise Kefka/FF6 as being the best thing ever and that any other opinion is wrong. Meanwhile I just wonder how they can complain FF7's overrated and plug FF6, when FF6 is also crazy overrated. lol.

And another FF related one... I loved both FF2 and FF12, when it seems like a lot of other people hate those games. They're two of my favourite games in the franchise, especially FF12.

@CharonDusk- I didn't like RE5, either. Felt too much like an action game and not so much "Resident Evil."

@Alectrona- I also am not a fan of KH, even though I love FF. Glad to see there are others that feel the same!

I think The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was overrated. I do love the game, but it's not my favorite, and I honestly enjoyed Majora's Mask much more. I respect it for being Zelda's successful transition to 3D, but that's as far as it goes. Definitely not one of my favorite Zelda games.

Majora's Mask is where my hatred of timed missions came from. And Dead Rising 2 is just as bad, if not worse.

I have literally encountered people who praise RE5 for being "one of the best, most innovative games ever", but at the same time rip apart RE4 for the exact same things they praise in RE5. Just...what.

Another opinion: Pokemon. Gen 3 is considered "the best", I still think of it as "the gen that nearly made me quit Pokemon". I just found it so dull and tedious even though it introduced some of my favourite Pokemon. Yet I love gen 5, which many seem to hate.
