Opening

You will begin, live, and end your life as a normal human of Earth. You have a job, family, friends, pets, property, fun, heartbreak. You get happy and sad and depressed and excited. Things hurt you, make you happy, make you hungry, make you fall in love. The environment around you is full of sensory information that your brain interprets and reacts to every second of every day. This is how things are.

Like I said, normal human of Earth.

You are somewhere a fourth of the way through your time on this planet. You live somewhere on the on this blue orb. By chance, you were born in your country and most continue to live in that very spot.

Most of you have a job and a life that you tend to every day you are alive. This routine defines who you are as a person. Every little habit or quirk is a result of living you entire life up to this point. You are comfortable, complacent, happy even.

Until.....

[to be continued]

The Story

You are one of these humans of Earth (duh) and you live somewhere on it (also duh)

Now of course that's not all of it. More like a good start. This has a plot and I will be revealing more of it as the story goes on. Don't worry, it will start to make sense quickly.

Just know that you are this person, going about their everyday lives when something happens to change it forever.

Another beautiful character. Accepted.

I'll be throwing in my first post soon. Start thinking about what your character's life is like and what problems they will be facing. The first couple posts will be on your own before brief interactions with other characters will begin occurring.

Thanks for having faith in this rp.

It has just struck three A.M. in Tampa, Florida. The city outside has began to quiet down. The murmur of a far off conversation could be heard on the street below. A siren of an emergency vehicular echoed in the quiet night. The dull rumble of traffic from the I-4 was ever present in the night sounds of the city.

Despite the lethargy of the city at this hour, a man sits awake at his computer desk. The apartment he sits in sits on the top floor of a squat building right off the highway facing the street below. The light from the neon sign mounted to the building right outside the window filled the room with an eerie red glow. Papers, dirty cloths and food containers litters every available flat surface. The smell of reheated Chinese food hangs in the air. The man sits with his back to the room and is wearing headphones. The light from his computer screen silhouettes him against the strange red light. He was wearing headphones and watching the last will and testament of his father, James Volpin. His face was a statue of determination and concentration. The video goes black as the man silently mouthed a departure and smiled. He had reached the end of the tape

Hugo rubbed his tired eyes and leaned back in the chair. His spine popped awkwardly, threatening to tweak some past injury. It had been almost nine months since he buried his father and watched this heartbreaking video for the first time. It was the usual formalities one would expect for a will and testament. His father had said his diddy on each person in the room, he divided up his fortune and said his goodbyes. Hugo had long been numbed to the emotional effects of listening to his father's last words. He had watched the video ever day since his funeral.

Hugo was convinced that something was off about his father's death. The day he got his inheritance, it was three quarters of a million dollars and this apartment. the apartment itself was strange. Hugo had never heard of his father ever living in or visiting Tampa, let alone own an apartment in the city. Now, Hugo was not disappointed in his amount received for helping his father run his company, it was the amount that bothered him. Between his father's brothers, kids and business partners, the total amount of money was about five million dollars not including whatever his company was worth. That seemed like a lot of money but Hugo knew for a fact there was more.

A couple months after his father's death, two members of his inner circle got busted for cooking the books at his father's company and embezzling hundreds of thousands to off shore accounts. The story made national news for his father was also being investigated for crimes against his investors and this seemed like a smudge on his nearly perfect business record. Shortly after his death, it was discovered that millions were missing from the budget over decades of careful manipulation of the numbers. Suspicious eyes now fall on his son and vice CEO of Knight construction for answers about the missing money. Hugo moved to his inherited and very private apartment in lovely Tampa to escape the media. An act that did not look good in the public eye. Not a day goes by without the news running some story about the missing vice CEO of Knight Construction and the suspicion that he had the money missing from his father's company.

Hugo took a bite of his leftover Chinese takeout and grimaced. It was cold. He groaned and rose from his computer chair. The desk had become his work station over the past nine months. He was living cheaply of his inheritance to get by. His only large purchases he has made was the computer he worked at and the car parked on the street below. The rest went to living.

Hugo shuffled to the kitchen and popped his cold food in the microwave. He set the timer and walked the the window. The sun was down and this fact made Hugo frown. What time was it anyway? The clock on the oven read 3:12 in neon green display and he let out a tired sigh. He told himself he wasn't going to do this tonight. He just felt like his dad was trying to tell him something. That money was somewhere and someone was looking for it. Someone willing to murder his father and make it look like an accident. The video was the first thing that tipped him off. Often times when people do these video wills they record them in some personal location. An office or a bedroom for example. The room his father recorded his last will and testament in was unfamiliar to Hugo. It was not the office in their home nor his office at work. Once Hugo noticed that, he began digging to find where the room was. He searched bank records, he asked close friends and family, he called the company that helped him put the video together. No one had any idea where it was recorded.

The invasive beep of the microwave jolted Hugo from his thoughts. He popped the steaming food from the box and shut the face. He dodged piles of cloths and trash bags on his way back to his computer. Hugo put the headphones back on and pressed play on the video still on his monitor. He sat alone in the dark and ate his food, studying the tiny details of the video he has seen hundreds of times.

(((Start whenever BTW)))

EDIT: Try to be descriptive of the environment. It's important to the beginning of the rp

Allison surveyed the rocky landscape. It was still too snowy for an actual dig, but she loved the canyons and rock formations enough to visit year round. It was beautiful in the snow as well as in the summer heat, but spring was coming quickly, and with that a melt. In the meantime, snow filled all the crags in the rock faces. Allison was standing at the top of a ravine, surveying the frozen creek bed. She was bundled beneath many layers to keep out the cold, restricting her movement during her short hike out here to enjoy the landscape. She liked to think out here.

On another hike like this, she had found an interesting macrofossil of a mammalian vertebrae which she had not been able to place as any particular species, but she hadn't found any other part of the animal, and the snow prevented her from looking further. She had simply marked the site and began to wait for spring.

Allison brushed the snow off a small boulder with her jacket sleeve and sat down. It was lonely out here. She hadn't even bothered to tell anyone else she was leaving; who would she tell. She had lost touch with her friends from school a few years back, and had never made new ones to make up for it. She had always been introverted anyway, and didn't want to go to the effort of making new ones. She was starting to regret never finding anyone new. Her friend making skills had probably atrophied. She had never been interested in romantic partners either. It had taken her a few years of college to figure out why, but it had been a relief when the revelation came. That there was even a word for asexuality gave her a strange feeling of community. She still sometimes wished for the easy excuse for a close connection romance would give her anyway. Perhaps she should find a roommate, then she would have consistent human contact.

The dirt at her feet was flecked with ice. She picked at a small rock trapped in the dirt, contemplating the billions of organisms past and present that were contained within it. Someday she would also be an organism trapped in dirt. She just hoped she had a legacy to follow after for a while. Allison didn't want children or a partner, so she knew the only way to continue her legacy through her achievements. Notoriety in her field was her deepest desire, had been since she'd first seen a book about fossils when she was eight. It wasn't coming easy. She had thought she'd be a big shot by now, not just a mediocre professor, with plenty of journals that were mostly unread. She wanted to name a species after something, or be national news. It was an unreasonable and childish desire, but it had never left her. Ironic that the introvert craved fame.

Extraordinarily, the cloudy winter blanket of a sky parted temporarily. The blue exposed made Allison smile in spite of herself. Allison stood up from her boulder; she was going numb anyway, and walked back onto the trail. The exercise from her speed walking distracted her, and she simply observed the landscape. The sculpted forms of the rocks around her never ceased to amaze her. The colors were drab, but the forms were elegant. Rocks teetered on top of pinnacles that seemed too small to support their weight. The trails were almost empty, no one wanted to be out in the cold. A few scraggly dead plants poked out of the snow cover, and Allison smiled at these as well. Their perseverance inspired her. Perhaps her career was merely hibernating.

Allison reached the trailhead. She saw her car nearby, but decided to wait outside observing for a little while. The drive back to her house in Rapid City would take a while, and she was in no hurry on a day off. She found another boulder and sat down on it, watching the clouds rush by.

Three hours since noon. Four hours until the end of the day.

It was around this time Jin had to lower the blinds as the sun reflected off a glass skyscraper, pierced through the large office window, and shone in a dappled patch right in the middle of his computer monitor. It might have been a beautiful moment, if it didn't directly get in the way of his productivity.

He knew he could be finished with at least three more hours to spare, but he clicked at a little slower pace. Even if he did clear all his work, he would be forced to sit in for the rest of the day in case there were any calls and besides, the big clients at this time were a huge company from overseas, meaning that they wouldn't even see the material until the next day. So Jin worked a little slower than usual that day to save energy for busier days. Usually his office did large scale housing projects, or airports or other huge things.

The current project he had on hand was a prison.

A large prison, but not a terribly high security one. What kind of place would justify the detention of upwards of ten thousand people? Everyone surely got a little nervous at the mention of this job in particular, but work was work. It was almost like designing a school, actually, and even then his hand in design was minimal. He just needed to put labels on the walls and make sure everything was the right thickness on the drawings they were going to send to construction.

Already making good progress. The patch of sun had moved enough to obstruct his view of the bright lines against a dark background. He finally stood up to adjust the blinds.

The sight outside the window was not really anything special, only the windows of a few other office towers like the one he was in right now, 32nd floor, and the sea of shorter buildings down below. Still, he found it a little too depressing to keep pull the curtains down and rely on the hanging overhead lights, the unfeeling, uncertain florescent tubing. Many times the smog from the city blocked out the sun anyway and kept away the damn bright patch from searing a hole into his computer. So today was an exception.

That was one of the tradeoffs of having a desk near the perimeters of the room. His office looked as if it was copied and pasted by an intern, with neatly arranged rows of desks of men and women at their chest-height computer cubicles facing away from each other, each doing their small part and very occasionally exchanging words and documents. Nobody even needed to get up; the farthest person in the room could easily be reached by telephone. The white and grey finishings of the walls and floor were bland, in his opinion, but it was not an opinion that was worth voicing.

After shutting the blinds and giving himself a good back stretch, he settled back in to his place and put his headphones back on. No music was playing through them. It was merely a visual do-not-disturb signal that most people followed, except for nervous young interns whose job was to do the disturbing so they could pass along papers. And besides, they ended up blocking out the hum of the air conditioner and the explosive loudness of the occasional cough.

Other than his computer, keyboard, and mouse, he tried to keep his workspace clean and clear, though inevitably it would become cluttered with working drawings. The only personal items he really kept in the open were a small framed family photo, and the glass container in which he brought and ate lunch. His phone had an unread message he didn't want to check on company time (or at least that's the excuse he gave himself). There was a cup of various pens, the company telephone that appeared to be a relic from thirty years ago, and a white mug of stale coffee. White mug, white painted desk, white walls. Stale.

Hugo paused the video for the fourth time in sixty seconds. He rewinded and replayed the last five seconds he watched. He moved closer to the screen, hsi nose just inches from the screen. His eyes strained to make out the book title on the shelf behind his father's head. After several seconds of fiddling with the pause and rewind functions, he managed to freeze the frame at just the right moment. His eyes watered from both frustration and the glare form the screen. He leaned back and groaned, rubbing the moisture from his eyes with his fingers. The clock now read four fourteen and Hugo was feeling the effects.

In an instant, he was suddenly very cold. Cold and peaceful. It was as if the his father's will was hundreds of miles away. The sound of wind rustling tree branches mixed with the steady patter of melting snow dripping from the trees. The distant call of a bird snapped Hugo to attention. He popped open his eyes and immediately squinted against the bright white glare.

He blinked rapidly until his eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness. Hugo slowly got his bearings but still could not comprehend where he was. He was standing in a small parking lot covered in snow. Trees surrounded every side. He was standing in a t-shirt and his boxers barefoot in the snow. Hugo instinctively crossed his arms and hunched his back in an attempt to keep warm. He looked around wildly. His eyes fell on a woman sitting on a bolder on the edge of the lot. He looked at her in wonder and was not sure if she had noticed him yet. He willed his feet forward and trudged through the snow towards the woman.

"Hello!" he called as he dew closer. He was completely oblivious to where he was or how he gotten there. Maybe this woman knew something about it. Maybe she had gotten here the same way? Despite his feet being buried in snow, they did not ache from the cold. He was too bewildered to notice but his footprints were not the imprints of bare feet, but showed impressions of the tread of heavy snow boots in the snow behind him. He stopped when he reached speaking distance, "I...I don't know where I am or how I got here...?" he said, trailing off. Now that he said it out loud, he sounded like a crazy person. He was unsure what to say now since his first sentence took the cake.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The office of Jingming Li suddenly had more than one person in it. Standing of the left was a very tall, very serious looking African man. He was dressed in simple jeans and t-shirt and looked like he had been working on cars. Defiantly not the kind of person to be hinging out in the thirty second floor office in Shanghai. he leveled his eyes at the man behind the desk and spoke, his deep accented voice filling the quiet space.
"Jin. You are in danger" Despite the man never setting foot in China his Chinese was flawless. Then man wandered over to the window and looked out at the city below
"Shanghai is beautiful isn't it? I have only seen pictures in books and on television." He said, his breath fogging the glass in front of his face. He turned away from the wonder of the city to look at the man staring at him. I a few moments a woman you have never seen before is going to poke her head in and ask if you can meet with someone." he explained, keeping his eyes on the door.
Seconds after he finished talking, a unfamiliar woman knocked on the door and poked her head in.
"Mr. Li, someone is here to see you, are you available? The woman asked. If Jin hadn't been paying attention he would have assumed the voice belonged to the secretary on this floor. Exactly what the man downstairs wants Jin to think.
"Do not be avaliable. This man is here to put your life in danger." he said over his shoulder. the woman that spoke did not acknowledge the other man in the room at all. Almost as if he was not really there.
Allison startled when she heard boots trudging and snapped her head around to look at the source. There was a man in the parking lot she didn't remember a second ago. She was wondering why she hadn't noticed him come off the trail and why he had no transportation when he spoke.
"I...I don't know where I am or how I got here...?" he said weakly. Allison had already been confused, but now she was bewildered. She tried to formulate an idea of what he meant. Had he gotten a concussion out on the trail and wandered back here? She looked for any visible head wounds, but there didn't seem to be any blood on him. Was he mentally ill? It seemed the most likely explanation for this. How had he gotten here then? They were far from any public transportation and definitely not within walking distance. And his clothes didn't seem equipped for the temperature.
Allison knew she couldn't leave him here. Either he was hurt or too confused to get back, and he would freeze to death long before he managed to walk to civilization. At this time of year, there likely wouldn't be anyone else taking this trail either. That meant it was down to her to deal with the situation.
"Are you okay?" She called out to him. "You're in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Where are your family or friends, do they know you're here?" She knew she'd have to offer him a ride, or maybe a cell phone if however might be with him wasn't far. "I have a cell phone you can use if you need to call them." She'd offer the ride only if he needed it, giving a stranger a ride was dangerous sometimes.
"Are you okay?" She called out to him. "You're in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Where are your family or friends, do they know you're here?"
South Dakota? That couldn't be right. He was just in his apartment in Florida. Hugo took several unconscious steps forward towards the woman offering to help him. He laughed nervously, "Well, I was ok but now I'm standing in the snow in ****ing South Dakota" he tried not to snap but he couldn't help it. He was already sleep deprived and exhausted. Now he was standing in a national park.
Hugo reached out to take the cell phone she offered, brushing his fingers against her hand as she did so. In the space between a blink, they were both standing in Hugo's apartment. Surrounding them in the gloom was his mess of a living space. Papers and food containers littered the floor, his desk, all the counters in the kitchen and corners of the room. Hugo wasn't worried about that though. One of his probelems were solved, he was no longer in South Dakota up to his ankles in snow. Now, a strange woman was standing in his living room dressed for zero degree weather. Hugo ran both his hands threw his hair and let out a puff of air, "Ok. I give up. Whats going on?"
"What the hell!" Allison cried out. Her ears had popped from the sudden pressure change, and she was still wincing. She looked around at the messy apartment, bewildered as to what was going on. She heard the strange man speak "Ok. I give up. What's going on?" Allison was asking the same question to herself.
"Did we just teleport?!" Allison exclaimed. "Is that what just made you appear here? Did you do this?" she interrogated, "Who are you?"
