2011-10-29 - Spam E-Mail Reporting

Recommended Posts

I never mark mine as spam because I have it deliberately set up to email me whenever I receive a PM here.

But I could see how plenty of computer-illiterate people would mark it as spam, not realizing all forums have settings you can change.

Never reported any emails I got as spam, although I do dislike receiving emails on my topics (one of which has about 1,000 + replies on it now. God, the emails...) that's entirely my fault.

*yawn*

For some reason, this reminds me of Odin's drastic response to Thor disobeying him.

"I BANISH YOU THOR, for being bad and disobeying me. >:|"

Overdramatic dad is overdramatic.

Can someone please explain how to STOP these email notifications while stile being subscripted to a topic? Does it even work? I'm searching this options for ages...

I love subscribing to topics because I love having my most used boards in a pretty summary in the control panel for easy checking. But for me it would be totally enough to just have them there, I don't always need the email notification. I would be amazing if we could enable/disable this option whenever we like.

I never report these mails as spam though because I know that I'm getting them because I subscribed. But it would make me more than happy if I could stop them sometimes without loosing the topic summary.

the whole point of "subscribing" to a thread is to specifically GET EMAILS sent to you informing you that new posts were made in whatever thread you subscribed to!

If you do not want the mail then don't subscribe. Most threads I like to read are not that hard to look for on the forum to check to see what's new.. I don't need an email reminding me to check those threads.. they are usually so busy they stay on the 1st or 2nd pages.

Subscribing is really best used for those threads that are NOT busy and rarely get posts made, but yet you still want to keep track of. It makes sense to subscribe because it would be very easy to "forget" to check. But if you still don't want to get emails even for these types of threads.. then book mark the thread link on your web browser and use that to find the thread quickly and easy whenever you feel like checking in/on.

I've never been subscribed to a thread on this forum before, but check out the link in TJ's post. Here it is again. If you uncheck the "Include a copy of the post when emailing me from a subscribed topic" box, does that work? (Or do you still get e-mails and they're just shorter?)

It doesn't work, you still get an e-mail. I've seriously tried to shut off e-mail from subscriptions, but there is NO SETTING for it. I like a few threads that I frequent stored in my control panel too, but I can't stand the e-mail for every post someone makes so I did mark them as spam which pulled them into a spam folder where I could read them if I wanted to or just clean out, which was much more convenient.

I ask that if this rule is put into effect you make a setting to shut off e-mail for subscriptions!

Aah, that's frustrating. Maybe make a proper suggestion to have that implemented? I'm not sure if TJ modifies his forum code or not on principle (I know I'd shy away from it if I were him), but it strikes me as worth a shot bringing it up on the suggestions board. smile.gif

It seems a bit weird to me that someone might deliberately mark DC mail as spam because as far as I can remember, I have not received any mails from here besides PM notifications (which I appreciate as I am seldom on forums) and when someone posts in the topics I am subscribed to blink.gif .

Anyhow, I have a dedicated mail account set up exclusively for adoptables and such, therefore avoiding clogging my "main" address. Way simpler than having to manually label everything.

My e-mail account has not even recieved any e-mail notifications in the last couple of weeks - even although it has been marked as such up to very recently - So I have no idea where the notifications are going or if they come back as spam notifications, that is why I switched away from notifications altogether. I have the same problems with other forum sides and can't do anything about it in my spam settings - the stuff just never even arrives.

That, or as a quick fix, make a filter smile.gif Pretty much every email provider allows you to filter messages based on incoming criteria. Somewhere in your settings there should be the option to filter according to sender, subject or receiver (and possibly others) - all I had to do in gmail was filter anything from forum@dragcave to a separate folder.

It means anyone who wants to subscribe to a topic but doesn't want emails in their inbox will still have them in a separate folder to check later, it's just not the spam folder.

If people are getting subscription emails, and don't want any, here is what you're going to do. It could be something that you set up without thinking about it, and then decided you didn't like it, and didn't know where to find it.

1) Go to 'My controls' found bolded, on the right side of your screen, beside your inbox, beneath the banner.

2) From 'My controls', look down along the left side navigation bar, and under the Options sub title, choose 'Email Settings'. Read them, and configure them like you want them. Note: If you don't want any emails, please unclick from all board preferences. Make sure the boxes are blank. TJ doesn't send emails often through mass email. So, you're safe to click that one. I don't think I've ever received one from him... Aside from that, those other options give you a massive amount of emails.

3) Once all your changes are saved, go to your subscriptions 'Topics', and 'Forums'.

If you are subscribed to anything there, you will get emails. If you don't want those emails, unsubscribe from all of them.

This should help control the emails. Also, if you ever click 'track this topic', you are subscribing to it... Which means you'll get emails.

I do hope that people are right in saying that the problem is likely with individuals specifically reporting emails as spam and not with providers dumping the odd DC notification or message into Junk.

I just went into my inbox and discovered that there was a DC notification in my Junk and again marked it not-junk...

I do hope that TJ will soon make it clear as to whether or not that type of issue will result in our being banned or not...

Yes, that's what I want cleared up, too. I want to know if this only applies to emails that a person actually reports as spam or if it also applies to those emails that providers sometimes dump in the spam folder (like with Yahoo).
