Where we are going as a species is a big question. Human evolution certainly hasn't stopped. Every time individuals produce a new zygote, there's a reshuffling and recombination of genes. And we don't know where all of that is going to take us.

-Donald Johanson

Hidden away in the Sandia Mountains, there is a boarding school. Red Peak Academy is not a normal school for the gifted. This school is not for those versed in math or science. This school is for students that can move things with their mind or shoot fire from their hands.

Yep, Red Peak Academy is a boarding school for super powered humans that wish to hone their unique abilities to use in the real world. Some want to be heros with capes. Others want to conquer the world with fear and hate. Others just want a steady paying job. Irregardless, there isn't a school in the USA better suited for superpowered students. As well as courses offered specifically for gift's of the students, the college also offers Gen Ed and Major courses. Red Peak is morally neutral campus, meaning that students of villainous or heroic intent are treated equal. Red Peak believes that everyone deserves a education, even if a student wants to use it for evil. Due to this policy, the school's atmosphere can be tense.

Red Peak Academy rests in a valley in the Sandia Mountain range a few hundred miles northeast of Albuquerque New Mexico. The academy itself is hidden from the prying eyes by a force field that renders it invisible to anyone not enrolled. The entrance is hidden to all but the staff at the school.

The resulting punch put the other boy in the hospital with a shattered eye socket and brain damage. The EMT's said it looked like he was in a car accident. The other students steered clear of him after that. Realizing he had power changed the boy and he began to torment kids weaker than himself. Ashley and Blake walked to their Power Control class from their rooms at the school. The class was held outside behind the gym in case some of the students' powers destroyed something inside the building. It was safer that way and it was also decided for it to be moved there after an incident that occurred a few years ago which no one speaks of. When they got there a little while later, they waited for the rest of their classmates to arrive while practicing their abilities a bit but were careful not to hurt each other while doing so.

Mercedes stuffed the last of the junk into her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. She took a look around her tiny dorm room to make sure she didn't forget anything. She snagged her cell phone and keys off her cluttered desk and headed towards her Power Control class.

Her cell phone's clock told her that she was almost definitely going to be late for her next class. She took too much time gathering supplies and it put her behind her schedule. She knew she was taking a risk but her power didn't work without raw materials.

At least it was a beautiful day. The sun was warm and a gentle breeze blew in from the north. Good thing too because this class was held outside behind the gymnasium. She broke into a jog when her clock told her she had three minutes to get across campus.

Hector, on the other hand, was already waiting for Power Control to start. This was an interesting class with something new everyday to keep it fresh. Last time he had this class they just shot at targets to work on long range capabilities. Hector had to resort to throwing rocks since his power was mainly for close quarters.

He heard a rumor that they were going to do tag team battles but Hector wasn't one for gossip. He watched the other students in his class as them began to filter into rough groups of friends. a pair was already beginning to warm-up, sparing amongst themselves off to the side with elemental powers.

Mercy rounded the corner just in time to see their teacher give her a look for being late. She hung her head and took her place near the back of the group forming in front of the man.

Their teacher was the hero that went by the name Zero. His ability allowed him to cancel out other's powers with a touch. Perfect for such a rowdy class

"Alright! Listen up" the man bellowed, silencing the chatty group, "Today we are going to work on actual application for your powers. You'll be using them against another person". He waited a few moments for the wave of chatter to die down before continuing, "You will be paired up. I'll give you a few minutes to find a partner and talk strategy.

Partners? This must be a exercise in power combinations. Hector though, looking over the heads of his peers. He wasn't sure who would match up with him well. He didn't really know the other's powers and hadn't bothered to think about it. He figured his ability would be enough.

Ashley watched as another fellow student came in a bit late but that was bound to happen. She's been late a few times but only because she couldn't get up in time. Blake lectured her to set her alarm to go off earlier and for her to go to bed earlier and she's improved after that. She then had baker attention be on their teacher when he started to talk about them pairing up and going up against another person. She nodded to herself and then looked over at Blake before walking over to him so that they could be partners in this exercise. They knew each other's powers really well and knew how to use them as a team if needed so they made good partners.

This was bad. Since Mercedes was late she didn't have the same amount of time to mingle with the other students in her class. Her friend, Julie was already paired up with another girl that has advanced durability. Mercy wasn't upset, Julie's power let her borrow powers from another person. Mercy's power was too specific to synergize well with her anyway. She felt a bit better when she caught her eye and gave a apologetic smile.

Hector was faced with the same problem.

"Wanna team up" He asked a large fellow whose only power was that he could punch really hard.

"Sorry Hector, Sam already claimed me" the man replied.

Hector nodded and looked around some more. Everyone else had been taken already.

Well, all but one.

Zero cleared his throat to silence the conversations happening between pairs. He was holding a clipboard and tracing down a list with his finger.

"alright, first up us Mercedes and Blake. Grab your partners and meet in the center of the field.

Mercy perked up. She didn't even have enough time to figure out this guy's power. She had seen Hector around in some of her classes but never had a conversation with him. guess now was as good a chance than any. Mercy pushed through the group with Hector close behind her. As she reached the edge of the field, she dropped her bag on the grass with the main pocket unzipped. She didn't want it to restrict her movement.

Hector followed Mercy out into the field. He knew her power had something to do with metal but he was unsure the extent of it. Guess he will find out soon enough.

Mercy and Hector took their places left of center, facing Blake and Ashley. Hector glanced at their teacher who was smirking knowingly.

"Alright. I don't want to drag anyone away on a stretcher so I want a fair fight. If any of you get out of hand I'll step in and give you laps" Zero informed them of the only rule.

"Annnnnnnd. Begin"

Before Mercy could tell Hector her strategy, he was already out of the gate.

Hector sprinted towards the pair with reckless abandon. He didn't care about Mercy's plan, he was just going to blindly charge forward and punch one of them in the face

Okay, a transfer student. That wasn't so bad, right? Except...she wasn't from the southwest. Nowhere near it, in fact. Her life in coastal Maryland was far different than the stagnant hot weather in New Mexico. But the enrollment officers gave her a full scholarship. With dad busy curating at the Smithsonian, she was practically living alone anyways. She would miss all the dead at the American History Museum. It had been a tearful goodbye for many of the ghosts residing in the museum's artifacts.

Ash swallowed, glancing down at the paper in her hand. "Yup...this is the right room." She reached forward and knocked. Nothing. She knocked again. Again, no response. This time, she turned the knob and opened the door. On the whiteboard, a simple note was written: "CLASS IS HELD OUTSIDE BEHIND THE GYM". Right...

A short trek back outside, and Ash, well, Ash kept to the wall. She didn't have abilities like the others, and as such, had already been warned to avoid fire. Striding up to the coach on hand, she extended the paper in her left hand. On it was a letter from the headmaster excusing her tardiness, as well as a schedule of her classes.

"You must be..Mister Zero, correct? I'm Ash, I'm a transfer from Maryland. My schedule has me in here this class period."

Blake started to charge up a fireball laced with sparks when he saw the other. Oh start charging at them while Ashley reached her hands towards the woods to get some vines ready. When the other boy was about half-way to them, Blake threw the ball in front of him in order to attempt to blind him some and Ashley had her vines go towards him to attempt to wrap him up in them to make him immobile.

"It's just Zero" Zero replied to the student that walked up to him. He took the paper from her and scanned over it quickly,

"Transfer, huh?" He said flatly, "well, we are doing team sparring today so head over to the group and.....see if there is anyone left?" Zero looked back to the fight that was unfolding. this Hector kid didn't really get his powers yet and approached everything so....simply. Zero looked back down at the paper the new student handed him to see if it had any more information on her.

I'll have to look her up in the database I guess

Hector tried to stop once he saw the siblings gear up for his approach. The boy was building a ball of fire throwing sparks in all directions. The girl was trying to draw something from the scrublands that surrounded the college. No matter. He would just run through it like-

A sudden pressure around his waist caused him to pause and look down. Is...is that a power cord? he wondered. The cord went taught and ripped him off his feet, the ball of fire hit the ground where his feet were moments before.

Mercy had to think fast or her partner would be lit on fire or strangled by the vines that were snaking across the arena. Using her power, Mercy's bag began spewing broken electronics towards the mechromancer. In no time, she constructed a crude gauntlet with a very powerful wench . She managed to lasso Hector and pull him out of danger.

And directly into her. the boy collided with her and sent them both sprawling into the dirt.

Hector rose to a sitting position, "Hey what the hell are you doing interfering while I'm charging?!?" he yelled at Mercy from his place a few feet away.

Mercy shot up and raised her fist to the man on the ground, "I just saved your ass from being fried you dick!" she yelled in retaliation.

Hector got up and looked at the girl still on the ground, "Stay out of my way." he sneered, turning and stepping forward to face the siblings again.

Mercy's electrical cord lasso looped around Hector's ankle and stopped him dead, causing him to turn on her with anger in his eyes

"Wait you damn fool!" She replied bravely, "I'll cover your ass while you blindly charge ahead" Mercy had picked herelf up off the ground and more machine parts were drifting rom her backpack, other people's bags, and the roof of the gym. She was building something around her arms.

At the same time, Hector was back to his old tactic of charging head on. He had one variation up his sleeve. This time, when he reached about the same spot, Hector launched off the ground...about as high as a normal person. The trick came once he hit the ground again. His legs seem to vibrate with an after image before shooting up off the ground again, this time, he reached a much higher height.

Oh. Guess I over did it again he thought as he reached his apex high above the buildings of the school. He took aim and shot back down towards the pair like a meteor.

at the same time, Mercy's machines were finished. Attached heavily to her right forearm was a large and cylindrical gauntlet. It did not have fingers but a dozen tubes protruded from the end like reeds in a pond.

Unseen by her targets, she pulled the complicated, five part ring trigger system she was forced to jerry rig. The end of the pipes erupted into muzzle flash and loud bangs. Bullets traced the ground, kicking up dirt in a line for the siblings on the other side.

"I...oh, thank you. It's probably important to know that, um...my abilities can't really be used in combat." Ash's brow furrowed as her gaze wandered to the deuling students. Kids with fire, strength, telekinesis....she'd be torn to pieces. Sure, she could ask one of the departed to interact with something, but it was based entirely on free will and wasn't exactly a great stopping force. "If we are practicing our abilities, however, I can still do that."

Ash shuffled off to join the small crowd of students. It seemed as if there would only me one fighting match at a time. It at least gave her time to come up with something. Sure, she knew a little about fighting, thanks to the fellows in the war exhibits back at home. But this? Knowing how to throe a punch wouldn't stop someone from obliterating her with powers.

As her eyes drifted over the current match, her anxiety about being pummelled faded. Her irises flashed white as her gaze rested on a young boy. Not a ghost...but close enough. And the way the boy looked at the fighter with curcle lenses...yes, she was certain.

"Brain damage...got worse over time..." She muttered, nudging past other students to get closer. "How did it happen? Why?" At this point, Ash neared the battlefield, seemingly unaware or uncaring of the danger it posed. Her now white eyes rested entirely on Hector. Louder this time, she spoke.

"You have someone following you."

Ashley pulled her vines back when she saw the other boy's partner pull him out of the way with some sort of metal tentacles pulling him out of the way of them. She then looked over at Blake when the other two seemed to come up with another plan and then when the next attack seemed to be in the works, Blake threw up a shield to protect them both when he saw the dirt wall and bullets coming towards them. It was also to help protect them from the other boy coming towards them from the sky that had been charging at them moments earlier.

Hector slammed into the dirt semi-dome that sprang up at the last second. A strange, ghostly after image passed up the boy's body. The fall from that height made sure he was charged for his next attack with the energy from his fall.

Hector perched on top of the shield and looked at Mercy across the field, "Get ready Mercy!" he shouted with a grin of instability on his face. He laced his fingers together and raised them over his head. He brought them down with enough force to shatter the rock half dome protecting their opponents.

Mercy stopped shooting once she saw the look of Hector's face. He looked positively mental and it sorta scared her. It scared her more once she could see the destructive potential of his power. He wouldn't tell her exactly what it was when she asked before the round started. Mercy reconstructed her grappling gauntlet and fired the cord into the falling stone. She felt the cord go taught as it lashed around something inside. The wench on her wrist whined as she began to reel it in. If anything, she could get one of them away from the power crazed Hector.

The impact of the black-haired boy was enough of a warning. Ash staggered backwards, stumbling and falling onto her butt. No, she had to be more careful. In a place like this, she couldn't get distracted. Talking to the dead, it was like seeing through another veil of reality. It was difficult to see one when focusing on the other. The white in here eyes faded as she lost focus. She'd have to bring it up later.

Both Ashley and Blake were surprised at the amount of power that Bector seemed to generate as he came back down and hit the ground. Blake was glad that he had out the shield up because of all the rock debris that were falling but he also knew that it wouldn't hold for long. When a grappling hook of some kind seemed to latch onto Ashley, she took hold of her brother's hand before she was flung away with it so that he could go with her. When they were safe on the other side, they saw that it had been Mercedes that had done that and were shocked before they saw how crazed Hector looked and understood. They both nodded in thanks to her but also stayed on high alert in case she took that moment to attack them by herself since their match was still going.

(((Quirk: Half cold, half hot.

would the temperature change of the air be gradual? I mean, in relation to the rest of the atmosphere, the surface area of a human isn't very much. It would work, but it would take a while to alter weather patterns.

Or

Is it more like her power can target areas of air? )))

Mercy drug them from under Hector just in time. As he dropped through the shield, he punched the ground where Ashley and Blake were just seconds before. It was like a bomb went off. The shockwave blew back Mercy's hair and she pulled her goggles over her eyes to shield them from the dust.

Hector was surprised to just see a crater in the ground. Wasn't the elemental siblings here just a moment ago? He put his fingers to his temple as a sharp pain behind his eye flared up. As it receded he thought back to his last attack.

It was foolish to run right in. Of course the brother controled earth and fire. He already showcased both his powers. That meant he had great offensive capabilities as well as defensive.

A major weakness to Hector's power was one he has not been able to get under control. the more kinetic energy he absorbs, the less of a grip on reality he has. He becomes consumed with rage and hyperactive energy until he can release it.

Mercy wasn't sure why she had pulled her opponents out from under Hector's attack. Something about the look on his face scared her. She was sure if she hadn't saved them, Hector would have intended to kill them. She glanced over at Zero. The man was writing something down on his clipboard and glancing up every so often. How far was the teacher willing to let this go.

Mercy turned her attention back to her opponents. Her grappling arm was deconstructed and the raw materials were orbiting her body. It was a nervous habit for her to rotate tech around herself. Her eyes darted to the parts of machinery that surrounded her, the parts she would need would highlight with a afterglow. Parts began to combine but it would take a moment for it to be complete.

Hector was out of juice. That last blast spent all the energy he had stored. He guessed he would have to get some more. Hector rolled his neck and sprinted out of the hole he created. He was aiming to get close to Blake. Hector didn't have the same range as the rest of his peers on the field.

((Blake controls lightning and fire))

Blake watched Hector as he seemed to be coming off of a power high (if it's okay to call it that) before it seemed that he wanted to try to charge at him again. He held his hands in slight proximity to each other to create another fireball but without the lightning sparks this time and when it was big enough, threw it at the other boy but not to hurt him; just to attempt to unbalance him somewhat.

Ashley got an air ball ready just in case she had to help Blake fight Hector but had the majority of her attention be on Mercedes just in case.

Mercy's machine was finished. She wore a small tank with a very loud vacuum motor whining behind her head. A mismatch of tubes fed into the gauntlet she constructed. The metal plate of a waffle iron covered her fist that was clutching the trigger right behind it. She swung her heavy fist in a wide right hook towards Ashley.

Hector was closing the distance between himself and Blake. He saw the boy building another fireball in his hand but he did not take any action to dodge. Hector smirked as it was thrown at him. This was something he had never tested but that's what this class was for.

Hector was struck dead on by the fireball, the force of it exploding kicked up a cloud of dust that obscured Hector from view. When the dust cleared, the left side of his shirt had burned away. His arm and shoulder were pink where the blast burned him. The fireball was eaten by Hector, It's energy now stored in his body. He redirected it to his lead foot, firing off the ground and rushing the white haired boy with explosive force.

It was unsurprising that the class had begun to edge further and further away from the fight before them. Although only meant to gauge abilities in practical combat, this was getting downright...dangerous. Ash noticed a movement behind her, turning as someone stood up to leave. They had sat in the back, huddled nearly against the wall, away from view. Other students seemed to shrink away as the sudent approached. The brown-haired student stopped before Zero, leaning in to speak softly.

"May I be exempt from this?" They asked, eyes shotting to their feet. As the first fight began to wrap up, they grew more and more anxious. After all, they were slated to spar the winner. And with someone as powerful as Hector...There was reason to be nervous.

Ashley saw the wide right hook coming towards her and dodged it while also creating an air wall to block the iron covered fist from hitting her. She then had the vines go towards Mercy in an attempt to cover any other metal-like weapons that she had on the armor so that this part of the sparring lesson could end. She was a bit worried about Blake but focused more on the other girl so that she wouldn't be or get distracted.

Blake was shocked that Hector ate his fireball before creating a lightning ball while dodging his next attack that was coming towards him. He then threw the other ball at him in an attempt to shock him and end his part of their sparring exercise. It was getting a bit too dangerous and he didn't want himself, Ashley, or any of the other students to get hurt.

At the last second before impact, Mercy's iron fist shot off the gauntlet with a hiss of compressed air. The projectile missed Ashley because that wasn't who she was aiming for. Blake dodged Hector's attack to one side, putting him directly in the path of the fist. The hand opened and closed around Blake's ankle, toppling him to one side.

Hector was struck in the chest with the lightning and it to was absorbed by Hector's power. He flickered with a ghostly after image as he drew closer. Blake dodged to one side and Hector smiled. That was exactly what he was hoping to do. The back of Ashley's head came into view now that Blake was out of the way. Hector's smile became more manic as his punch zeroed in on the girl.

He stopped inches from the girl when something grabbed his wrist. His punch connected with nothing, pushing the air around his fist into a tight cyclone and fanned out in a cone in front of him. When the dust cleared, two trenches forked away from Ashley and Mercy. Even though he didn't actually hit her, her brother fed him with enough energy to cause that much destruction without even touching anyone.

Zero had seen the danger Hector had posed and finally stepped in to interfere. The teacher had Hector's wrist in a vice-like grip. He could feel the remaining energy sapping away as Zero canceled his power.

"That's enough! Go back to the group" he said to the group. He would grade them at the end of class.

"Who's up next?" he called to the rest of the class by the sidelines.

Silence. Quinn said nothing as the class's coach stepped in to stop the fight. They ducked their head, eyes fixed on their shoes with feigned interest. So much for that. As Zero's question rang through the air, Quinn stiffened. Slowly, their hand raised to answer said question. As more sets of eyes rested on them, Quinn seemed to shrink inwards. They intentionally avoided being picked, but random draw was random draw.

They just happened to be unlucky.

Ash, meanwhile, strode straight up to Hector. She finally had time to speak to him, and his spectral follower was rather worrisome to her. "Hey. You have a spirit following you." She deadpanned, eyes flickering a silvery-white once more. "They're....ten, maybe twelve? Really pissed at you."

Ashley realized after her block of Mercy's attack that the former hadn't been aiming for her although it had looked like it. She gave her an apologetic look before having her full attention go to being on Hector and Blake, immediately getting worried once more for her brother when she saw how much power Hector seemed to have now. It seemed that he could absorb energy so the attacks her. Either thought would be on him had actually been absorbed. She kept that in mind for the next time she and Blake would be up against the other boy before looking pale as she saw that he she was his next target. She closed her eyes, not wanting to see him hit her but then opened them when no contact came and had a surprised look on her face when she saw the huge hole that was now in front of her and between her and Hector. She let out a sigh of relief before seeing Blake come over after Zero had interfered.

Blake looked a bit surprised when the attack that he had wanted to do on Hector with his lightning was also absorbed and then had a look of horror on his face after he dodged the other boy's attack, seeing that he was now aiming for Ashley. He was about to go in and interfere when a large hole appeared in-between his sister and Hector. It seemed to him that the energy Hector now had control over got away from him and caused that before their instructor intervened by taking the rest of the energy that he had harnessed just by touching him. After he had seen that, he quickly made his way over to where Ashley was. "Are you okay?" he asked with a look of concern on his face and when he saw her nod he felt better before both of them went back to being with the rest of the group as they were told.
