OBSESSED WITH FANFICTION!

I write any fanfiction at all. I can get requests or just write when I feel like it. Go to Fanfiction.net for some of the best.

Grimdark fanfiction is completely horrible. I despise it. I mean, really, you basically ruin a story for me with your "angsty releases."

And you shouldn't even do it for trolling either. Personally, I prefer the stories true to the story, and the happy endings, and the no-one-important-dies.

THat being said, Lord of the Rings and a few other series made me sad.

But the movie AI was the worst possible tear-jerker ever.

(( My MLP fanfiction My Little Brony: Rise of the Elements is pretty sweet though.))

So wonderful to see such changes on the forum, such as this thread. A friend of mine and I wrote a Firefly fic actually on this forum a few years ago. I can't promote my stuff as it's most not for this age bracket, but anyone who knows of a good old journal site will find me there under the same name. You must have an age disclaimer to read any of it.

As for everyone's likes and dislikes, I believe the whole idea of FanFiction is to find ways of doing things the Author did not do. My main desire when reading a fanfic is that the characters are IN CHARACTER. Like the ever popular HPverse, do NOT make Draco a sweet guy who's all soft and cuddly. Or make Harry evil without a really good reason. Also; please have a good beta.

Fanfiction's a great way to start writing and improve on your writing skills. However I don't know...if I ever publish a book, I wouldn't want anyone to start writing fanfiction about them. Too many fanfiction only focuses on romance, and not about other things, such as what would have happened, say, if one event changed? (Example: Harry Potter being nice/neutral to Drago Malfoy on his first day at Hogwarts) And I don't really like it when people focus on just the romances/R-rated stuff and not the intricate emotions and such, while destroying the character's characteristics.

Most fanfiction does focus on R-rating or further, but a good writer will also find a way to make a good plot around those lovely pairings we all love. PWP writing is not exactly my cup of tea either. I want depth and a plot that is going to keep me intrigued.

I totally agree. There was an absolutely great oneshot I read on Supernatural that had me laughing the whole way through. Unfortunately I lost the link. sad.gif

I will, it was hilarious. All about Dean questioning Sam on how he puts his pants on. One leg at a time or both. Great read.

To any Pokemon fans, I recommend Pedestal. It's long, but it's really good. The plot was amazing, and managed to keep me interested through all 160 chapters. <3

Do you people have other places than fanfiction.net where you can read fan fiction? Any recommendations or tricks to finding them?

I don't know if it's only the fandoms I like to read fan fiction of, but I've had it with the extremely defensive, childish, duck pond-mentality I've come across so frequently in fanfiction.net.

I don't know if it's only the fandoms I like to read fan fiction of, but I've had it with the extremely defensive, childish, duck pond-mentality I've come across so frequently in fanfiction.net.

The best sources of fanfiction (best listed first)

1. Live Journal (communities/authors)

2. AO3 (Known as Archive of Our Own)

3. Tumblr

4. Other websites/archives

Recommendations are fanfics that are recommended by fans, so they're usually of better quality.

To get the best out fanfic, always use these key words:

'recs' (short for recommendations) and 'yourfandomhere'

e.g. For Sherlock, I google 'recs Sherlock BBC'

And if your looking for no relationships, use 'recs', 'yourfandomhere' and 'gen'

Gen stands for general. Usually only 1% of fic is gen.

Tvtropes has decent recommendations, though this depends on the age group of fans. For example, Pokemon fanfic is always at a lower standard then Sherlock fanfic.

here's a link to the Pokemon page of TVTropes. To get to the recommendations, click 'fanfic recommendations'.

It's also good to check your fandom's Fanlore page Click to access fanlore. Your fandom page usually has a list of well known writers (usually famous for quality) and famous reccers.

Fandoms also have acronyms, which are good to know, because they uncover more fics. For example, Good Omens is abbreviated to GO and Supernatural is abbreviated to SPN. Usually fansites have a list of these abbreviations and the fan names of (relation)ships.

LJ is very diverse. Usually fandoms that are more well known have their own LJ community for example Sherlock. LJ has a better standard of fics, and navigation works by clicking tags usuallly listed down the side.

Tumblr tends to have ficlets and drabbles (very short fanfics), graphics and fanvids. Recommendations usually get listed on tumblrs created specifically for recommendations, or well known reccers have their own askbox where you can ask if they know good fanfics.

The last method is ff.net, the method I call favourite list/favourite author list hopping. It's the most time consuming, though it's less time consuming than going through everything in the archive. Simply click a person's username, and browse to their favourites. This way you can get many stories written in the same style (people who write in the same style tend to favourite each other).

When you're browsing ff.net reviews CAN be indicative of how good a fanfic is, but it usually isn't... unfortunately. Also, you can quickly tell how good a story is by judging the grammar, punctuation, spelling of the summary.

Wow, DarkEternity, thanks a lot! laugh.gif

About the reviews being indicative of the quality of a story... those are generally what I had in mind when I called it "childish, duck-pond mentality". Like 99% of the reviewers just do mindless gushing of how great a fic is and if someone comes along with some real constructive criticism (that the site supposedly encourages) they're mostly jumped by both writer and the mindlessly gushing fans simply for having a different opinion or actually writing a real review.

I meant number of reviews as a ballpark (the reviews themselves.. are ehhh)

Exactly, but a bunch of idiots proclaiming how awesome a fic is... is better than no indication of how crap it is at all >.< It's so unreliable though, but fics which get recommended tend to get a high review count, so it's better than no indication at all... Or there are self inserts which generate lots of reviews, or the author is begging for reviews, or the author is coercing for views, or there's just a really idiot fan base idolising a crappy writer. T-T

Writers go to betas for criticism or the Literate Union for flaming... (they have betas, but most people are probably to scared to go to LU for betaing). LU are the ones who do the most constructive criticism and the most flaming and the most being jumped for criticism/flaming.

The best fanfics are better than the original, in some cases. Some writers are fantastic, most writers are crap... a few writers are meh.

And no problems :3

Hopefully that gets you sorted for reading!

(oh, story/author alerts on ff.net are a must -need an account, email alerts for LJ - need an account, AO3 has email alerts - need an account, if you need an invitation code, contact me)

I forgot DeviantArt as a source of fanfics, but most fics there are substandard... I mean better than ff.net but still crap and the layout is crummy.

forgot to mention also, other archives/websites are ussuuallllyyy linked through the wiki for a particular fandom, through fanlore or through LJ 'associates'.

I've never really read fanfic before but I just went on fanfiction.net (i was inspired by this thread) and I found a Maximum Ride fanfic that I like so far. This just might become an addiction... X3 Maximum Ride is my hero.

ahhhh my long history with fanfiction ;)

i think i started writing fanfic in about.... 2002? i was sooooo into the anime fandoms (mostly ...beyblade, digimon and gravitation). i think i actually wrote under this penname back then (ccphoenix).

then i cycled through so many fandoms and changed my penname (it's been thisissirius for as long as i can remember!). harry potter, stargate atlantis, merlin, supernatural, heroes, star wars, star trek: aos, thunderbirds.... varied and weird lmao. though tbh my main fandoms at the moment are emmerdale (idek man, but this particular english soap has an EXCELLENT couple who have the best storylines), shadowhunters, hannibal and i'm currently suffering a revival of my old fandoms D:

I love fanfiction. I love reading it and I love writing it! I write mostly Final Fantasy VII, Kingdom Hearts and a little bit of other stuff. I've had an account since 2011 and have been writing since 2013. I go by "Shade the Hero" on there.

I think my two best stories would have to be "Saving the Lost" and "Nightmare Undone" with "We're Friends, Right" being a close third.

The changing gif in my sig takes you right to my profile page. (Sorry, shameless self promotion over) ^_^;

Have I never posted in this topic? Huh.

I love fanfiction, I actually have roughly 200 fanfics bookmarked, various fandoms, some I haven't started reading but look interesting and some I'm far into but keep stopping for whatever reason. I do primarily read fanfic centered on certain ships I love, but the does not mean it's always PWP or explicit in any sense. One of my favorite 'fluffy' stories is about my favorite non-canon pairing, both of whom are fairly 'tough', in the story one of them secretly adopts abandoned kittens and names them all after other people on the show. Another favorite is one where a character's spell goes wrong and she ends up transforming herself back into a child, in a world that child-her is completely unfamiliar with, and the other character takes on the task of caring for child-her until they find a way to fix it. Both those stories are from Once Upon a Time.

I've written a lot of fanfic over the years, I actually started writing it long before I knew there was such a thing as 'fanfiction'. I had no clue so many other people wrote stories based on movies/shows/etc, I had no idea that was a thing at all, but I was young and imaginative and wanted shows to go a certain way, and they didn't, so I wrote. I still write fanfic sometimes, tho I don't post it anywhere. Actually my longest-ever story, at 124,164 words, is a fanfic... And I'm currently about 80,000 words into a sequel.

I don't really 'love' fanfiction, not anymore. My interests have changed vastly since I started reading fanfiction in 2009 and nowadays I found no interest in most of the fanfictions taht are posted nowadays. Too many revolve around shipping or are just another cliche 'this character runs away from home' (the How To Train Your Dragon fanfiction community suffers from this, as do many others) and I find this trend not of my taste.

Now, while I don't read fanfiction often and, when I do it is very particular stories, I have written a few fanfictions as wwheeljack (once HideousZippleback) on FF.net and AO3. I wrote for How To Train Your Dragon, Transformers, and a story for Yu-Gi-Oh, Marvel, and League of Legends. My most 'read' story - I guess you could call it that? - is the Transformers fanfiction "Scars".

I actually had to try to wean myself off fanfiction earlier this year because I was just reading far too much of it. I was reading it in all my spare time, rather than reading actual books, and I hadn't actually read any novels from my ever-growing list for a couple of years. Yikes.  So I still read it a bit, but I'm also forcing myself to read for at least 30 minutes a day from a novel that's on my bookshelf that I've been meaning to get around to forever. So now I've got much more balance in my life and my life isn't being run exclusively by fanfiction.  I'd call this character development. :P

So I just finished reading this fic based on this post, and I gotta say. That was a wild ride! Probably one of the best and longest fanfics I've ever read. It gets a lot darker than I was expecting.

And now I'm determined to write my own Pokemon Fanfic, haha. Thanks for the inspiration!

An old favorite fanfic was recently updated for the first time in over a year and I'm soooooo excited! It's from House (or House MD, depending on where you live I think), and it's one of those really overdone plots where an original character from 'our world' somehow stumbles into the show's universe, and they were a huge fan of the show so it's totally weird seeing all the characters as real people, etc etc... But despite that general plotline being so overdone, and usually done fairly horribly, this particular story is just awesome. The original character ends up in the House-universe around the beginning of the series, though the series is actually over in 'our world' already, and the author is basically going episode by episode and showing how the character interacts with the episode elements and how certain things start to change because she's there... It's so cool. It's fairly long, 52 chapters right now and no end in sight (which is a good thing imo). It's called 'Intervention' if anyone wants to take a look at it.
