Hoarding

Recommended Posts

The OP of the old Hoarding thread was very cluttered and disorganized so I've split this new one into two posts. The first post will contain proposed ideas of how it will work and the second post will contain item ideas and sprites.

**If there was an idea or sprite I missed from the old thread you can repost it here or PM me - I only checked the pages from 28 April 2012 and after (like the last 4 pages, as that was the last edit date in the old thread).

Note: All of the example images that were posted for these ideas were gone (as well as the images associated with "interface ideas"). If people want to make new example images that's fine. ^^

~~~~~~~~~~~
Hoarding is exactly what it sounds like - dragons bring back stuff for either you or themselves, depending on how people want it to work. [snip] no idea for how it's going to work has been set in stone; people are still discussing that. :3
The purpose of this thread is the same as the last one - to iron out a scheme for hoarding that will work and to collect item ideas and sprites for them. :3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Proposed ideas for how hoarding would work:

Individual hoards: idea that each dragon has their own hoard

Scroll hoard: idea that either your dragons share a hoard OR that the hoard is actually stuff they collect for you

Actions page: idea that this would be a action button on all dragons

BSAs: Idea that this ability would be specific per each dragon (example: deep seas have the action Dive instead of search, which finds items)

Areas: (note pre-biodomes) that the dragons had multiple areas they could search around in but certain dragons couldn't go to certain areas (See under "interface ideas" for a detailed proposal for this.)

Failure: searching for items could fail (I.E. dragon brings nothing back)

Toss items: idea that if your dragon brings something back you didn't have to keep it.

also an idea of a Cleaning option were you discard all your items at once. (actually a proposed BSA for springs)

Long Cooldowns: the idea that since many people have MANY dragons the search action should have a VERY long cool down

1 action: idea that instead of each dragon having their own search button all search buttons are linked (similar to trios) so that one dragon could search at a time (*buts in* I feel that this could be changed so that you can choose a limit of dragons... and it would work like the current egg limits) (or also an idea of a button in account actions were were you select from there which dragons go search)

Make-it-like-dragons: idea that the items show up in the abandoned place and cave side by side with dragons

Egg freezing: hatchies will collect pieces of eggs to create eggs (of their own breed)

Dislikes and likes per breed: idea that certain breeds won't/can't go some places and are more likely to get stuff from some places (also suggested is finding glue which would be used to put dead eggs together again)

Primarily hoards: idea that a each dragon hoards one thing more than other things (example: deep seas will find mostly shells)

Run away: anything that lives will/may eventually escape from the hoard

Written list: instead of sprites there be a written list for public to see

Automatic: there is no actual action for searching for the items but dragons will randomly pop-up having items (maybe hoard icon glows when they have found somethin and it'll act as message center)

Non-dragon hoarding: idea that even non-dragons hoard things due to exposure to dragons (example chickens collect feathers)

Restriction: certain breeds can find things and only that breed can find them (example: deep seas can only find special ultra-rare shell)

Give to another dragon: idea that one dragon could give an item to another to increase probability of breeding between the two

Growing piles: piles grow with clicks and views like dragons do

Helps with breeding: bigger hoard = more likely to reproduce

Limit to items: idea that you can only collect so many items (per items type or just in general) and amount you can keep increases with trophy level

Hatchling (ungendered): Can only search a very limited space, since it stays under your direct supervision. Bits of string, clovers, pretty rocks, colorful egg shards, and other small things they can find without getting into trouble. The clovers would probably be the rare.

Hatchling (gendered): Can search a wider area, but still not go far. They can start finding seashells, animal bones, and metal ore (stolen from a blacksmith).

Adults can find items actually worth having, the other items kind of train the dragon to be able to find this stuff to begin with. Different dragon 'types' could find different things like suggested earlier (chromatic (rainbow color named) dragons and metal dragons find coins of various kinds with increasing pile size, gem and mineral dragons find gems, etc etc).

Day and night: idea that some items are found at night and some at day

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interface ideas:
There are six areas to search for items - the biomes:
1. Alpine
Mountains are unfriendly environments. Landslides and avalanches make mountaintops dangerous places, and unpredictable up-currents can prove surprise even experienced flyers. Small and agile dragons may be able to reach places that are otherwise inaccessible places.
Valuable gems and metals can often be found in this area as well as [insert samples of items to be found]. Once in a while, the remains of careless adventurers provide surprising treasures.
2. Coast
Coastal Zones vary in shape and form. Depending on the geological circumstances, they allow different forms of wildlife to accustom to their specific habitats. Land based animals compete with marine creatures for food, the latter sometimes being both predator and prey at the same time.
Sea food can be found at the shoreline, flotsam and jetsam are washed ashore, and other interesting things like [insert samples of items to be found] make for interesting finds.
Sea: Restricted to marine creatures dragons
3. Desert
Deserts are barren lands where creatures and plants alike have to struggle to survive. Extremely high temperatures by day and chilling cold at night make life in the desert very hard. During the rain period the desert seems to awaken from a long slumber; rains transform the desert into a blooming paradise.
[insert samples of items to be found] are common to be found in this area. Long lost ruins are scattered across the desert and hold unclaimed properties of valuable nature – or junk. Swelling rivers during the rain period carry interesting items from remote areas with them.
Dry Period (June to March): No marine creatures
Rain Period (April to May):
4. Forest
Forests are complex ecological systems and are widely spread across the continent. Moderate temperatures and periodic rainfalls ensure the growth of fructiferous trees as well as berries, ferns and mushrooms, providing best habitats for all kinds of herbivores as well as predators.
Travelers frequently stumble across [Insert samples of items to be found]. Humans are known to throw away trash or accidently leave behind their most precious items, although some are easily mistaken for the other.
5. Jungle
Tropical rainforests are the most speciose areas of the continent. Year-round tree growth provides large amounts of food available at any given time, supporting the development of countless of species uninhibited by environmental limitations.
[insert samples of items to be found] are a common sight in a jungle. Plants, seeds and sprouts can be collected nearly everywhere. Abandoned cities or mysterious temple sites are hidden in thick undergrowth, travellers need a good eye to discover them.
6. Volcano
Volcanic areas are a dangerous place to be unless being adapted to the hostile environment. Active volcanoes spew occasionally erupt and spew lava and ash over the lands. Yet, the greatest danger roots from gas eruptions, usually trapping and overwhelming careless travellers.
Volcanoes are good sites to find valuable gems or minerals. [insert samples of items to be found] are known to be spread across the area, and [insert samples of items to be found] may be discovered with a good portion of luck.
Items
Items will have up to three „traits“, which are type, biome, and restrictions
1. “Type”
There are three types of items: combinable items , item sets, unique items
a. combinable items
Single pieces of the same sort will not be displayed individually, but be symbolized by a sprite as follows:
1 piece: single gemstone/coin/whatever item
2-24 pieces: small pile
25-64 pieces: medium pile
65-99 pieces: large pile
100+ pieces: huge pile (this is the final stage)
The site will have to keep track of how many pieces have been collected. Those are “common” items.
Example: Medium pile of white pearls.
b. item sets
Some items are part of a set, and as a true collector, you’ll have to try to collect the whole set. Every piece of each set will can only be found once. Those are the “uncommon” items.
Example: A historic collection of tomes consisting of seven volumes.
c. unique items
Unique items are items that can be only be collected once per scroll. They are intended to be the “rare” items.
Example: A huge Diamond called the “Draginoor”.
2. biome
While some items can basically be found everywhere, other items can only be found in some or even one area only. The “biome” trait describes in which biome(s) the item can be found. If an item can be found in every area, the trait would be “general”.
Example: Pearls can only be found in the “Coast” area.
3. restrictions
Some biomes have restrictions. Input would be welcome here.
Example: River items in the desert can only be found during the rain period.
Examples for the traits that describe items:
Ruby: combinable / General / no
Crocodile Teeth: combinable/ Desert/Rain Period
Hyroglyph Plate: Set/ Jungle/ no
Kohinoor Diamond: Unique / Desert / no
Updated Concept for Hoarding (Cave hoard)
Part 1: Basics
I. How to get items
Not surprising, items will be acquired via the action search. Every adult dragon will be capable of searching as well as frozen hatchlings.
There will be several areas where dragons can search for items. A dragon can access any area it unless its physical features deny it from doing so. Many items can be found in any area, but there will be “area specific items” that can be found exclusively in a particular area.
II. Cave Hoard
All found items are stored in the Cave Hoard (as opposite to the dragon’s individual hoard). With hundreds of dragons on a scroll, individual hoards will lead to having items with Dragon A that would be needed at Dragon B and vice versa. It has been proposed that items would be interchangeable within the same scroll, but I like the Cave Hoard better. The items will be stored on a separate page, just like the easter eggs and Halloween treats.
user posted image
In the account options, the Hoard can be hidden if the user prefers not to take part in this mini-game.
Part 2: Items (general ideas)
Items will have three „traits“, which are type, area, and season. The traits determine where and when an item can be found.
1. “type” trait
There are three types of items: combinable items, item sets, unique items
a. combinable items
Combinable items are the "common" items to be found by searching. Single pieces of the same sort will not be displayed individually, but be symbolized by a sprite as follows:
1 piece: single gemstone/coin/whatever item
2-24 pieces: small pile
25-64 pieces: medium pile
65-99 pieces: large pile
100+ pieces: huge pile (this is the final stage)
The site will have to keep track of how many pieces have been collected (Edit:) and display the exact number next to it.
Example: Medium pile of white pearls.
b. item sets
Some items are part of a set, and as a true collector, you’ll have to try to collect the whole set. Every piece of each set can only be found once. Those are the “uncommon” items.
Example: Servaig’s library - A historic collection of tomes consisting of seven volumes.
c. unique items
Unique items are items that can be only be collected once per scroll. They are intended to be the “rare” items. The difference to the set items would for one be rarity, and set items will not have names – only the set will have a name.
Example: A huge Diamond called the “Draginoor” or a Knight Shield “Escutcheon II”.
d. Usable items? (No!)
In my concept, usable items will not be found unless it would be necessary for the Ascension Project. If there are usable items, it will lead to much drama just about how luck favours Player A and how Player B will never ever get said item. Of course, it probably will be that way with the other items, too - but if an item is just a decoration, it doesn’t really matter. If it has an effect on the game itself, drama will be much more intense. BSA-like items have been proposed, but thinking about it we shouldn’t make it too complex.
Edit 1: Opinion on this subject is split.
Compromise suggestions are:
- cap on number of usuable items
- reduce use of items to gain a badge
2. "area" trait
While some items can basically be found everywhere, other items can only be found in some or even one area only. The “area” trait describes in which area(s) the item can be found. If an item can be found in every area, the trait would be “general”.
Example: Pearls can only be found in the “Shore”  area.
Please note: There would be no need to have a similar ratio between common, uncommon and rare items like we have with dragons. I see no reason why there shouldn’t be many rare items to keep things interesting. Only the probability to find a specific item is determined by the rarety.
3. "season" trait
Some areas have seasons (see individual area description). The season trait describes when an item can be found in the area.
Example: Elephant Tusks can be found from Month 1 through Month 8 in Plains.
Examples for the traits that describe items:
Pearl (White): combinable / Shore/ March through November
Ruby: combinable / General / All year
Tome of Earth Magic: Set/ Plains / All Year
Kohinoor Diamond: Unique / Desert / All year
4. Mechanism
a. Going with the Cave Hoard, there would have to be a cooldown for the search feature. Take an average scroll with 200 dragons, and it’s clear that a daily search for every dragon would lead to getting all of the items too quick. Items need to be sprited, and even if new items are introduced, searching too often would soon make the feature pretty much useless. A good cooldown would be four weeks.
b. Search results would be evaluated by set percentages:
Failure: 70%
Success 1 (general item): 15%
If successful:
80% chance of a combinable item
15% chance of a “set item”
5% chance of an unique item
Success 2 (area specific item): 15%
If successful:
80% chance of a combinable item
15% chance of a “set item”
5% chance of an unique item
The high failure rate is supposed to keep searching attractive to scrolls with a large number of dragons. Gold trophy scrolls with 500+ dragons will collect 150 items (30% success) on average per every cooldown. That is A.LOT! People with less dragons will raise more dragons and gain more opportunities to search over time.
c. Claiming items
If an item was found, the user would get the chance to either claim or discard the item. The Cave Hoard would be displayed at a page linked from the user’s scroll
d. Trading of items?
A big no for me; to complete you’ll have to compete. Or else said, this minigame shall be a way to interact with your dragons (and passing time when nothing else can be done). Speeding up collecting by trading negates this effect. If you can trade for it, it’s not really a reward, but a currency. Also, people will start trading rare eggs against items. Let’s not go there. It’s already-hard enough for new players to trade for rares.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Possible outcomes from hoard action:

Dragon refuses to search.

Dragon doesn't find anything.

Dragon finds some goodies and keeps them.

Dragon finds some goodies and doesn't want them, so he gives them to you, whereupon you have the option to trash them.

Just want to pop in and say that unless a bsa is considered to game breaking to be added as a dragon would be the only way I'd want something as a potion. I think that the focus of hoarding should stick to allowing our dragons to hoard (for our own amusement) and to possibly be something else we could base descriptions on (if we could control what certain dragons like, breed specific items etc)

@Braintrainer interesting idea... but... I would think that I'd rather that be random then determined by us if something similar to that was ever implemented... it makes me think of mind control...

perhaps in rp style it could be considered noting what a dragon liked but the coding would read it as that was what the dragon liked to keep anyway?

Err.... this is the first time I see this, so I'm a bit confused. Maybe it's because apparently one topic was split into two?

Perhaps you could include a little introduction in the first post to explain what the hoarding is about. After reading the first few posts, I gather it's a new feature, somewhat familiar to what Umbria does (collect items randomly, make items with them, trade, etc).

The ideas in the first post, I assume are basics (like how hoards are build, how to collect, items, etc) where, of course, the second post are all the items?

Also, you split the original topic because it became too cluttered. What is your purpose with this topic? Simply organize it all, or do you want to discuss it further?

No negative critic, but just my confusion smile.gif

If this is indeed what I think it is, I like it smile.gif This will mean more interactivity and really playtime for all our dragons! That will be fun. I think I even like it better than the Umbria system!

...what happened to the virgin princesses? xd.png

I still love this idea, always have. I think I'd prefer simple hoarding, it doesn't have to be useful.

I will state here that while I love the idea of collecting stuff, I am adamantly against useful items unless they are easy to get. We don't need anything else like summon on this site.

The problem with the old thread was that for one no decision was made how hoarding actually should be done and second that half of the discussion took place in Lythiaren's "search" thread. About the quotes in the first post - this never was the consensus or a result of discussion. It simply was one suggestions of many.

Edited because of stupidity.

There was only one hoarding topic. The OP of that thread had all the ideas and sprites stuck in one post; I took that post and split it into two posts in here for better organization because Dovealove (the starter of the original thread) has long been inactive here and the thread was getting to be very long and disorganized and was difficult to update. ^^

Hoarding is exactly what it sounds like - dragons bring back stuff for either you or themselves, depending on how people want it to work. I'm unsure of how useful an introduction would be, because no idea for how it's going to work has been set in stone; people are still discussing that. :3

The original topic wasn't split. It was reorganized and made into a new thread. The ideas on how it works and ideas for items were split, and were simply split into two posts, one for each. The purpose of this thread is the same as the last one - to iron out a scheme for hoarding that will work and to collect item ideas and sprites for them. :3

Rally - I know they're only ideas, but I put them up there because they were closest thing I had to an interface idea. If there was a decision made elsewhere (is search the same as hoarding then?) on how hoarding would work can you post that decision here?

I'm sorry, I meant to say that no decision was made in the hoarding thread. (Feels stupid now) I edited my former post. We never agreed on how hoarding should work, we just threw a bunch of ideas together.

As for the Search thread, I can't remember if there was an official decision. Maybe Lythiaren can say something as it was her thread.

Ah, I got those two mixed up than smile.gif

This would be fun! It could help in giving your dragons a true personality.

I think if you include this sentence, it will already enough to explain the purpose of this topic smile.gif

Or might I make a suggestion for a short intro:

Are you looking for more interactivity with your dragons and something to give your dragons an extra tidbit of personality? How about Hoarding? Dragons are, after all, known for their hoarding habits and here at DC it's no different. Do you want them to only hoard stuff, or perhaps make things from the items they collect? Share your ideas here!

I hope it was helpful smile.gif

Thank you for the time and effort to reorganize and bring back this thread. Anyway LOVE it and would love to see some form put in. I know that's gotta be a lot of work for Mr Gentleman Lyzar (sorry he will always be her husband in my universe ) so maybe a holiday release surprise or something we can only do during limited celebration periods or special holiday themed rotating items might be a way to kick it off.

I'll have to agree with the "no useful items" comments. We already have the BSAs to do most of those effects, it would be unnecessary to also have items that do the same things.

Also X3 "Sword Dragon's Sword". That can probably be removed since I'm pretty sure the Sword Dragon idea I was making back then is no longer valid given TJ doesn't like props.

The fact that the "useful" items duplicate BSAs is part of their purpose. The items have the drawback of being single-use, unlike a BSA dragon which can be used at any time, but they don't have a cooldown, so you could, in theory, stockpile a bunch of Incubate potions and use them all at once, rather than collecting an army of Reds.

We've got to bear in mind, of course, that the purpose of BSAs is to get people to collect an army of whatever dragon, so collecting a large number of Incubate potions would have to be so difficult that it's only a good option if you really, REALLY don't like Reds. They'd be more useful as an emergency stockpile of Incubates, so in case, for some reason, you really needed an Incubate and all your Reds were on cooldown, you'd have a plan B. The same would go for all BSA-duplicating potions.

I'd say BSA potions would have to have like, a 2.5% chance of being found by the dragon, and then you divide that up into all the different BSAs. (That's the same as a rare drop in Minecraft and it seems to work for them.)

I will not pretend to know anything about minecraft, but that seems like an awful low percentage for something that can only be used once. Keep in mind a gold trophy owner can have up to seven eggs at a time. To be able to incubate them, I currently have 56 reds, and that isn't enough if I stuck to lower time eggs. At that percentage, you would have to send out tons of dragons to even get the incubating power of half those reds, and that is assuming you don't get a different BSA power like influence or fertility instead of incubate.

I stand my ground though in that I would rather not complicate matters at all by just not having these items to begin with.

I'd just like to point out that a gold trophy owner has a ton of dragons. Although, I guess with such a low return percentage, hoarding would have to be really easy to do en masse.

Frankly, I think hoarding should be easy to do en masse anyway, like have a "send all dragons not on cooldown all out at once" button.

I agree with this. I had an idea a while ago for a dragon that had a "Search" BSA. I think it was removed by inactivity though.

:/ I don't have an army of reds... nor will I ever amass one.

I do feel that special usable items should be much rarer than normal ones. although I also feel like this BSA should should be a 1 per day sort of BSA... like summon... (you can only summon once per month no matter how many trios) where you go out on an adventure/walk with 1 dragon for the day.

/eh maybe we should argue what type of BSA this should be lol

eh if anyone sketches animals I can sprite them... I can't draw non dragon things that look anatomically correct T.T

I'm on the side of really, really, really preferring that objects be completely optional. A fun side game for those not satisfied with dragons, if you may. Please no useful objects. Just collections. For fun. ;~;
