Online games that shut down

Recommended Posts

Have you ever played an online game, only to find one morning that it's shutting down or has shut down?

My personal experiences with this involved Free Realms and Dragon's Prophet (North American servers, anyway), causing me to distrust the publisher of both MMOs.

(I did a search and couldn't find anything on this.)

grand chase was my childhood and where i met literally 1/2 of my online friends back in the day, i was super sad to hear it was shutting down. they tried to make it too much like another game the company owned and the other game was netting more money than gc was, so they closed it down.

lunia was another one i really liked that they closed, rip. you could play as a literal slime and hit things it was the highlight of my life

though, i'm pretty sure you can find private servers of any game that's shut down still up and going, run by fans!!

It's actually not online game but I played mario kart DS. Nintendo shut down wifi service for DS. I still can play single player or multiplayer(if someone have NDS) but can't play its online part now anymore.

rest in pieces toontown online. played that game since its release.

and even with the myriad of private servers that sparked after the closing of the game, it will never be the same. i played them for a while, but it just didn't have that same feeling i got when playing the actual game.

I wish that were the case for Dragon's Prophet. At this stage, the only way to play is to log on to the European servers and cry deeply about losing your favorite dragon.

Mine was Derpins McSkittles, but he will live on forever on my scroll.

YESSSS ~ the game of my early childhood. ;_; I love dinosaur games.

I don't want to start drama, but I miss a certain dragon-raising game that was closed down a year ago. rolleyes.gif

It sucks that Dueslist Network was shut down. I didn't enjoy it so much for the game itself, but it was a great way to look at cards that weren't officially made yet, but were going to be. I never would have known about all of the support cards and monsters for the Blue Eyes without it.

Back when I was in university, I played the MMORPG Lineage II. I was probably one of the first players in the country. I got to play it for free before the game started to charge monthly subscription. I had fun, although the game was my undoing. Lol. Eventually, I quit the game and turned my attention back to my studies. Months after, I learned that the game was to be shut down in my country, after being around for only a year or so. Although I did enjoy the game, I was glad to see it go for personal reasons.

I forgot two mobile games that are gone (off Google Play, at least)

Pocket Frogs and Pocket Planes aren't available anymore. It makes me sad.

Vdex is shutting down imminently and I'm really sad. The admin there is among of my favorite internet people outside of my RP site.

Poke Pets and Vampires. Both literally the only Facebook games I played, both immensely popular, both with in-app purchases that were actually good values....

Both shut down for absolutely no reason :/

That game looks amazing. Wonder why they shut it down? Would like to play it.

I've had a few games shut down. Secret of the Solstice, Solstice Reborn, Luvinia (shut down and brought back, dunno if it's active or not currently). Currently play 3 different MMOs off and on, hope none of them close. Dx

Which one? Free Realms or DP?

Free Realms was probably just someone saying "this game's for little kids, and it's been up too long", unless someone can tell the story behind it.

Dragon's Prophet North America was probably shut down because SOE was falling behind in updates compared to Infernum (EU) and Runewaker (TW). Most people had already moved to EU servers, so "what did it matter?" Unfortunately, it mattered a lot to me, and I'm still salty.

Aside from Lineage II that I mentioned in my first post in this thread, I played Pet Society too. The game's graphics were really cute and delightful to me. I was in the middle of working on collecting everything and completing all possible things in the game when the game shut down. Then, I discovered Party Town, whose graphics look a lot like Pet Society. I played Party Town for a while but I stopped because I was not really up to grinding for another cute game.

DP is the one I am referring to.

And I found out today that last year Luvinia shut down again. Dx Was considering going back eventually but now? Nope. -lol-
